SOUTH KOREA SEOULLO 7017

SEOUL

Seoul is a city on the rise. Its economy burst onto the scene in 2014 after a series of events propelled it to the fourth-largest metropolitan economy in the world. Tourism provides significant revenue; with the increasing popularity of K-pop and the Korean Wave, more than 10 million international travelers visit each year to experience the Korean culture. The city is also home to one of the best airports in the world, rated best 2005–2013 by Airports Council International. Not only do people visit the country, many also choose to make South Korea their permanent home, especially after Arcadis rated it as boasting the second-highest quality of life globally. Now is the time to catch a flight to Seoul for business or pleasure.

GETTING THERE Incheon International Airport lies approximately 35 miles from city center. Airport buses connect to downtown every 10–30 minutes, 5:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Limo buses (about $14.70 one way) stop at major attractions and hotels and provide a good option for travelers with luggage. Standard taxi fare from the airport to downtown runs about $40 for regular service and $70 for deluxe. The Airport Railroad departs every 30 minutes, costing about $8 one way.

The well-connected Seoul Metro runs throughout the city and suburbs. If you plan to use the subway often, pick up a stored-value T-money Card at subway stations, convenience stores and newspaper kiosks. The card itself costs around $3 and is also valid for taxis, buses and some convenience stores. The city operates four kinds of public buses: yellow (tourist areas), green (around neighborhoods and connects with the subway), blue (across town) and red and green (intercity). One-way fares cost about $1. Standard taxis (orange or silver) start from $2.35 and go up 10 cents per eighth of a mile. Black deluxe taxis start at $4.41 and increase 20 cents per 10th of a mile. globaltravelerusa.com

It maintains a significant presence in entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, sports and commerce. ITALY SFORZA CASTLE

MILAN

PHOTO: © EKATERINABELOVA | DREAMSTIME.COM

Although physically set in the northern Lombardy region of the country, Milan lies undeniably at the center of Italy’s innovative fashion industry and rich business culture. This mecca of finance and high design is home to the national stock exchange as well as endless sites featuring arts, culture and history and luxury shops, restaurants and hotels.

GETTING THERE Fly into Milan Malpensa Airport, located just 28 miles east of downtown Milan. The airport may be a century old, but the innovative technology and prime location just outside the city make it an easy go-to hub for international business travelers and tourists alike. Rent a car and ride into the city, or hop on Malpensa Shuttle bus service, departing the airport every 20 minutes for around $11. Coaches, or buses, will also be available quite frequently with tickets available on board. Both ride options take about 50 minutes, while the 30-minute express train drops riders at Cadorna Station in Milan. If all else fails, grab a taxi for around $102, one way.

GETTING AROUND You’ll see most city locals riding bikes and walking, and with a bike-share program offering affordable rentals, you’ll soon see why. Rent a bike and traverse town on your down time or to lunch. If you’re in a hurry, cabs are readily available around the city, but the Azienda Trasporti Milanesi underground service runs quite frequently, with four lines traveling 6 a.m. to midnight, daily. Tickets range by line, so map out your path and buy in bulk; weekly passes range $10–13, while daily can cost $5–8.50.

9–5 BICE

Shopping and sightseeing are two musts while in Milan, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II offers a bit of both. This shopping center is more an Italian landmark than anything else. Opened in 1877, the Galleria’s glass-covered ceilings resemble an opulent 19th-century greenhouse, complete with upscale dining, luxury brands and even an arcade. SFORZA CASTLE

Built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, the Sforza Castle remains an incredible representation of the city’s history and Renaissance architecture. Visiting hours extend to 7:30 p.m., as this castle offers more than just a pretty façade — it houses works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo and survived Allied bombs during World War II.

PORTUGAL

LISBON Lisbon is a fantastic city with a long and colorful history waiting to be rediscovered and explored. Once overlooked by the hordes of visitors traveling to Europe, the city recently saw a large spike in tourism. In 2017 Portugal’s number of foreign tourists increased by 12 percent to a record high for the country. In 2018 Lonely Planet dubbed Portugal one of the top three countries to visit. Lisbon is also a force to be reckoned with in the business world. The city alone contributes a higher gross domestic product per capita than any other region in Portugal and has the 32nd-highest gross earnings in the world. Join the millions visiting Lisbon — a vibrant city with a multitude of attractions and activities.

GETTING THERE U.S. travelers with a passport valid for at least three months staying for 90 days or less do not need additional documentation to visit Lisbon. Due to the city’s geographic position, Aeropuerto de Lisboa, about four miles from city center, is a gateway for many airlines, including Portuguese carriers TAP Air Portugal, SATA and Aero VIP. Bus service departs the airport every 20 minutes from morning until night and travels to the train station for about €3.60–4.50 (about $4.25–5.30). Taxis line up outside the airport, and rides run about €13 (about $15), with an additional charge per piece of luggage.

GETTING AROUND Lisbon is an easily walkable city, with many neighborhoods accessible by foot. The Metro covers most of the city with an expanding network, running 6 a.m.–1 a.m., and also offers a sightseeing opportunity, with the stations known for impressive artwork. A day pass costs about €4.50 (about $5.30). Taxis, usually cream in color, charge a base fare of about €2.75 (about $3.25); an additional charge applies when calling for a cab. Funicular, bus and tram services are also available.

Enjoy a Sunday brunch at the Royale Café located near the busy shopping district in Lisbon. The restaurant is a quaint establishment with quiet music playing and outdoor seating available. The food is delicious, and while you enjoy a meal, you can plan your itinerary. SINTRA, CABO DA ROCA AND CASCAIS

Hold a team-building event by organizing or signing up for a tour encompassing these three destinations. This can be a quick daytrip away from Lisbon, but it’s just as rewarding as a day spent exploring the city. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Sintra features a beautiful castle and surrounding area; Cascais is the local fishing town that leads to the westernmost point of Europe, Cabo da Roca.

BUENOS AIRES Buenos Aires is the most populous city in Argentina. Boasting the second-largest economy in South America, behind Brazil, it is only getting better. The Global Equity Index classifies Argentina as an emerging market. The country as a whole is growing as a popular tourist destination, and Buenos Aires was voted the second-most desirable city to visit after Florence, Italy, by readers of Travel + Leisure. Nicknamed the “Paris of South America” for its likeness to European cities, this dynamic city offers a little of everything. Visit one of the most beautiful opera houses, Teatro Colón; snap photos at Casa Rosada; go back in time at The Cabildo; enjoy delicious cuisine; or spend the day shopping. There is never a dull day in Buenos Aires.

GETTING THERE Ministro Pistarini International Airport, also known as Ezeiza International Airport, lies approximately 14 miles south of downtown Buenos Aires. Prepaid taxis (remises) provide the safest means to and from the airport, which you can often arrange through your hotel. Visitors can also take a shuttle bus with companies such as Tienda León, transporting passengers via air-conditioned buses at least every hour from the airport to the terminal Madero station for about $10.

GETTING AROUND Walking offers one of the easiest ways to get around this bustling metropolis with its heavy traffic. The city’s fast and convenient subway network, Subte, includes stops at several tourist attractions; however, it gets crowded during rush hour. One Subte trip costs about 53 cents.

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco, The City by the Bay, is a powerhouse of a city and the cultural, commercial and financial center of Northern California. The City and County of San Francisco is popular with travelers from around the world and is the fifth-most densely populated U.S. county, behind four New York City boroughs. Famously home to many companies including Reddit, Fitbit, Pinterest, Twitter, Uber and Craigslist, this dynamic city attracts businesses for the same reasons millions visit each year: the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz and unique neighborhoods. Travelers to San Francisco will be excited to see the sights and amazed by the innovation.

UNION SQUARE PHOTO: © SCOTT JONES | DREAMSTIME.COM

GETTING THERE Located only 13 miles south of the city center, San Francisco International Airport is served by most major airlines. To get to downtown San Francisco from the airport, choose among several modes of public transportation, shuttles and taxis. If you’re going to Union Square, along Market Street or to the Convention Center area, Bay Area Rapid Transit makes a great option. If you’re heading to hotels near the waterfront, taxis or hotel shuttles are your best bet, as these destinations are often a longer walk from BART stations.

GETTING AROUND You won’t find a traditional grid layout in San Francisco but instead long boulevards, curvy streets, steep hills and hidden alleyways. Nonetheless, getting around is easy and convenient. Public transportation, ridesharing and taxis are the way to go, as driving and parking can be tricky and costly. Muni/San Francisco Municipal operates buses, trains, cable cars and the F-line heritage streetcar; all are easy to navigate and affordable. Call 511 for all Muni times and buses, or check out one of the city’s several apps that provide schedules, maps and routes.

9–5 GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

Much of the city’s revenue comes from tourism, offering visitors exciting attractions such as its iconic skyscrapers — including the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa — and, of course, the shopping. With more than 70 shopping centers, Dubai has a store for everyone. The biggest upcoming event in Dubai, the World Expo the city will host October 2020–April 2021, is sure to draw crowds and make Dubai even more appealing for businesses and business travelers.

Dubai International Airport is about a 10-minute drive from the city center. Rental cars are plentiful at the airport, but visitors can also transit via bus, taxi and metro. Sky Bus Service links the airport to hotels across the city and requires a NOL card, purchased at the airport’s information kiosks, to pay the transportation tariff of around $4. Outside the arrivals hall find a 24-hour taxi stand; cab fare costs about $27 to the Dubai Marina, but fares vary according to destination. Locate Dubai Metro stations at terminals 1 and 3.

Grab lunch at Dubai’s only revolving restaurant and lounge, located in the Hyatt Regency Dubai. Serving lunch 12:30–3:30 p.m., the restaurant maintains a smart casual dress code. Expect to spend about $50 per person on food, but that can vary depending on your selection and accompanying beverages.

GETTING AROUND

For travelers who choose not to drive in Dubai, taxis are the best bet. Hail a cab or call the Dubai Taxi Corp. to book one in advance. Pink-roofed cabs are for women only. The two metro lines (red and green) operate Saturday through Thursday, 6 a.m.–11 p.m., and 2 p.m.–midnight Friday.

Enjoy the upscale shopping options at The Dubai Mall, featuring many high-fashion brands. The mall boasts more than 1,200 shops to browse through plus an ice rink, indoor waterfall and the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo.
