Good to Go

I

t is a funny thing to work in travel while not yet having reached what I deem my fullest potential in geographical knowledge. However large our world may be, I do find peace in planning future adventures to all corners of the globe. My small role in this extensive and beautiful industry aids in that desire, and I hope one day to fulfill those ambitions. As a young professional, I continually glean inspiration from the editorial team here who create content, such as this Global City Guidebook, to help travelers like myself navigate the world, from large towns known by most to small cities I like to call hidden gems. One can safely say our readers — and travelers all over the world — are finally realizing their dream trips that were placed on hold over the past few years. Following the hiatus, our team prepared this Global City Guidebook to inspire you and remind you of the value of travel, from getting to a destination to each and every step beyond. From top spots to enjoy in each city to recommendations on where to host business affairs, our writers

So welcome to the Global City Guidebook, where you can find information on a city of your dreams or be inspired to visit somewhere new. I will do both, right along with you.

ADELAIDE

Tropical Treasure: Palm House at Adelaide Botanic Garden PHOTO: © DUDLAJZOV | DREAMSTIME.COM

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia and fifthmost populous city in Australia, was the only independently settled province in the country, receiving no financial backing from the British. As such, the city has always welcomed free-spirited individuals. Near popular wine regions, Adelaide itself boasts a thriving restaurant and bar scene and ample cultural events and entertainment. Travelers visit year-round, but May–August can be chilly, while January and February tend to be quite hot.

GETTING THERE & AROUND

Connected to many international gateways, Adelaide Airport is conveniently located a short 15-minute drive from city center. A taxi from the airport costs approximately $15. The JetExpress bus runs 5–10 a.m. and 4–9 p.m. on weekdays, with pick-up and drop-off at Grote Street, Pultney Street and North Terrace. Trains, trams and buses operate via Adelaide Metro, and the Adelaide Metro Visitor Pass allows for three days of unlimited travel. Complimentary City Connector Bus and a city center tram, as well as Uber and taxis, offer other options. Use one of 500 bikes available through Adelaide Free Bikes at 20 locations throughout the city. EcoCaddy operates eco-friendly, short-trip public transportation.

Behind the Scenes of O’Hare’s Terminal 5 Renovations ONE OF THE LARGEST AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS in North America is underway at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, as the 30-year-old Terminal 5 updates to a world-class facility that will serve both international and domestic passengers. From day one, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot has focused on building the airport of the future for Chicago, and this capital development creates thousands of local jobs and hundreds of business opportunities for firms of all sizes, many certified as women-owned and/or minority-owned business enterprises. The $1 billion investment expands and modernizes the facilities and adds approximately 350,000 square feet. The work includes new security checkpoints, 10 new gates, a 66 percent increase in concessions and amenity space, and a new baggage handling system. The airport also started work on a new six-story parking garage to replace the Terminal 5 surface parking lot when it

opens in 2024. As the building gets closer to completion, the Chicago Department of Aviation, which manages O’Hare and Midway International Airports, is focused on the world-class amenities travelers expect. This includes the recent approval of eight additional exciting concessions locations and new gate-side food delivery throughout the entire airport. The CDA also works with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events on a $3.5 million acquisition of public art by Chicago artists, the largest such procurement by the city in 30 years. Terminal 5 improvements are part of O’Hare 21, Chicago’s vision for a modern airport to meet the needs of the traveling public through the 21st century and beyond. The $8.5 billion curb-to-gate investment will elevate the passenger experience and improve operational efficiencies to ensure O’Hare’s continued growth and strong competitive

position in the years to come. O’Hare 21 began with the final stages of the O’Hare Modernization Program, which reconfigured and modernized the airport’s airfield. With eight runways, O’Hare now operates the world’s most capable civilian runway system and is ready to renovate the airport’s terminal facilities to match the swagger of its airfield. The initiative is anchored by O’Hare Global Terminal, a $2.2 billion investment that will more than double the amount of space in Terminal 2. Additional upgrades at two new satellite terminals will provide expanded gate space to minimize ground delays and maximize the passenger experience. The project will open in phases over the next decade, with the upgraded Terminal 5 coming in the next year. Learn more about how the nation’s best airport is rethinking itself at ord21.com.

Zest for Life European sophistication meets Latin passion in Buenos Aires. BY ARI BENDERSKY

ntil you visit, you may never know the extent of Buenos Aires’ cosmopolitanism. From design and architecture to technology and banking — and across all the arts — Buenos Aires truly has a global feel that rivals Paris, New York and Tokyo. While it’s on the water, Buenos Aires is not a beach destination like Rio but rather a port city — hence locals are called Porteños and have a zest for life and want to share it with all who visit. Almost as soon as you enter this beautiful Argentine capital, it becomes obvious just how fantastic this energetic metropolitan city truly is. You’ll likely spend most of your time between upscale, classic Recoleta; chic, eclectic and fashionable Palermo; and the romantic and gentrified San Telmo, where you’ll find a sprawling open-air antique flea market each Sunday. But the Central Business District of La Citi, between the San Nicolás, Montserrat and Retiro neighborhoods, is home to the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, Argentina’s Central Bank and other financial institutions. No matter where you gather with colleagues and clients, you’ll notice quite quickly

the European influence on the city’s architecture. Waves of immigrants from Spain, Italy and Germany — and what now comprises the world’s sixth-largest Jewish community — all arrived in Buenos Aires in the 19th and 20th centuries, bringing with them design, culture and gastronomy. All over the city their impact can be observed by simply walking around the neighborhoods and looking up at the homes and buildings. You’ll especially see it at Teatro Colón, one of the most important opera houses in the world, where singer Maria Callas famously performed and which offers group tours. At the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, modern and folk art converge in permanent and rotating exhibits. You can experience it in any number of the city’s top spots to watch the romantic, sensual tango shows — and learn a few moves yourself in this, the world’s tango capital. You’ll even encounter it in La Recoleta Cemetery, a neighborhood in its own right where some of the city’s most important residents, including Eva Perón, are buried. When it comes to business, Buenos Aires’ numerous industries converge. In 2017 the city was named a smart city due to its welcoming attitude toward innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and app development. River Dragon: Statue of Naga, a landmark of Nong Khai

NONG KHAI

PHOTO: © CHANCHAI DUANGDOOSAN | DREAMSTIME.COM

Nong Khai, both a city and a province in Thailand, contains the longest stretch of the Mekong River in the country. Located across the river from Laos, Nong Khai often serves as a starting point for journeys into the neighboring country. Offering temples, culture, countryside and the marks of rural Thai life, Nong Khai is well-known as the site of the Naga fireball phenomenon. As yet unexplained — with scientists claiming it could be bubbles of gas from rotting organic matter in the riverbed and some saying it is the rising Naga, or river dragon, coming to greet Buddha — glowing balls of red fire ascend from the Mekong into the night sky in October.

GETTING THERE & AROUND

The nearest airport to Nong Khai resides in Udon Thani, about 34 miles away. Upon arrival, find a counter in the Arrivals Hall to purchase a ticket for minibus services for the one-hour drive to Nong Khai. Nong Khai Railway Station is the terminus of the northeastern railway from Bangkok; the journey takes 10–12 hours. The only mode of public transport throughout Nong Khai is tuk tuk — start fare negotiations around $1.50–2.75.
