Enrichment & Service HARVARDSQUARE and GLOBAL WORKS have partnered to offer professionally guided, academic, and experiential summer programs for aspiring pre-med, engineering, pre-business, and middle school students. These specially designed programs for HS2 students will provide 2 week summer enrichment experiences in 2012. Each trip will feature practical field experiences and opportunities to make a difference in the lives of people in less developed regions of the world.

Pre-Med/Health Session One: June 25–July 9th, 2012 (20 Spaces) Session Two: July 30th–August 13th, 2012 (20 Spaces) TUITION: $3995
Nicaragua
A professionally guided, academic, and experiential program for aspiring pre-med and health students who want to contribute to development efforts while gaining practical field experience in Central America. • Participate in activities with Ministry of Health (MINSA) officials focusing on the healthcare system and its operational functions in the country. • Attend seminars on the interface of socioeconomic factors and the epidemiology of disease in Nicaragua. • Shadow physicians and healthcare professionals MINSA outposts to gain clinical exposure to the direct provision of healthcare in a resource poor setting. • Work alongside professionals in an NGO in the planning and implementation of public health campaigns focusing on the solar disinfection of water, dental health, diabetes, nutrition, and maternal and child health. • Assist in the construction of double pit latrines as well as work with local community health educators in promoting their use and maintenance. • Construct community wash stations in public schools and communities which reduce hygiene related disease.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENRICHMENT Session: June 25- July 9th, 2012 (20 Spaces) TUITION: $3195
COSTA RICA
A program specially designed for middle school students interested in an experiential learning opportunity, impactful community service projects, and adventure activities that inspire growth and confidence. • Raft through beautiful rainforest canopies on an introductory level adventure. • Learn Spanish through interactive language activities, lessons, games and real world interactions. • Contribute through community service projects that include: pouring the foundation for a community center, planting organic school gardens, painting and tiling a community kitchen, constructing a plant nursery, completing a sidewalk around the town square. • Fly through a rainforest canopy on an exhilarating zipline adventure tour. • Experience the rainforest and learn about flora, fauna, and conservation matters in Costa Rica.

PUERTO RICO
A professionally guided, academic, and experiential program for aspiring law students who want to become immersed in legal issues involving Immigration and Land Use through a series of seminars and first hand interactions and service work with individuals directly affected by these laws. • Attend professional seminars on Puerto Rican civil law tradition and its complex interaction with common law and U.S. federal law, including the controversial application of the U.S. Constitution to Puerto Rico's special political status. • Interview families who have been directly affected by immigration laws and learn about the constitutional powers of the federal government over immigration matters, admission and exclusion, entry, deportation, and political asylum. • Perform community service home building projects with families who have gone through the process of legally acquiring land through "land settlements" while learning about the tension between public goals and private rights and the constitutional limitations placed on governments. • Enjoy Puerto Rico’s world famous bio-luminescent bay and a guided Catamaran excursion to the beautiful and desolate Icacos Islands while also exploring conservation and environmental law issues pertaining to the area.

Costa rica
A professionally guided, academic, and experiential program for aspiring business students who want to contribute to development efforts while gaining practical field experience helping a start up coffee co-op in Costa Rica • Participate in workshops and seminars with Icafe (Costa Rica’s National Coffee Association). • Visit and interview executives from Costa Rica’s most successful coffee a producer, Café Britt. • Interview and evaluate coffee producers and farmers and learn about the strategies employed to create a successful micro coffee production and exportation business. • Assist start up coffee producer in the community of Cedral through infrastructural improvements, product vision, product identity, marketing, and website design. • Collaborate to design a business plan complete with mission statement, goals and objectives for coffee producer. • Design labels, packaging, and slogans and identify potential national and international markets.

A professionally guided and experiential program for aspiring Engineering students who want to contribute to development efforts while gaining practical field experience helping build solar hot water systems in rural communities. • Participate in workshops and seminars with Engineering graduate students. • Study and learn about building Solar hot water systems for communities. • Evaluate and optimize design for improved functionality. • Build and install numerous solar hot water systems for homes and communities for bathing and improved sanitation. • Collaborate on service projects that address needs of the community. • Visit spectacular sites like Machu Picchu and Pisac market.
