A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Dear Parents, Students, and Alumni,

20 1 5 Su mmer Ser v i c e A d ven t u r es | DIREC TOR' S N OT E

I am honored that Global Works is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Starting with our maiden voyage to Puerto Rico in 1990, we have led thousands of students on six continents to explore and make a difference in their life and their world.

2

In 1995, I started working with Global Works as a trip leader in Costa Rica. From the beginning, Global Works has held a strong belief that community service and student safety—in the context of a fun and engaging summer— are the essential elements for each of our programs. Service-based, adventure programming has always been who and what we are! From a once-upon-a-time high school educator and trip leader to a parent and Global Works Director, you have my commitment that we remain true to those essential, core values. We are excited to present you with our 2015 Summer Service Adventure catalog! This year’s programming reflects the high standards and unwavering commitment to service and safety that have always characterized Global Works. Whether rafting down a river in a tropical rainforest or teaching geography to local school children, our travel continues to be focused on connecting more authentically with the world. There are many summer travel options for students now. I am often asked, “What makes Global Works different?” I wanted to share three key aspects:

Our trips ultimately aim to develop Global Competence. The National Education Association refers to Global Competence as "the understanding of international issues, an appreciation of and ability to learn and work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, proficiency in a foreign language, and skills to function productively in an interdependent world community." There is simply no substitute for the profound lessons of traveling and interacting first-hand with other cultures around the world. Each year, we are inspired by student feedback exclaiming how our trips have changed their world views, improved their language skills, and fostered a new appreciation for what they have at home. Our students don’t just take home photos and souvenirs, but rather develop new friendships, accomplishments, and fun experiences with communities and people on a global basis. When I think about all the people and places that Global Works has impacted over the past two-and-a-half decades, I am reminded what a gift it is to travel. As we enter this milestone year of providing high school students with fun and rewarding travel, we want to thank the thousands of families who have supported our mission of fostering personal growth and promoting social and cultural awareness for our participants and the communities they serve. Yours in the journey,

• A Strong Sense of Community: With our strong focus on group dynamics, friendship, and in-country community connections during our trips, participants, parents, and host-country community liaisons are part of our 'Global' family. We've been cultivating these relationships at home and abroad for more than 25 years. • Authentic Travel Experiences: Global Works trips involve impactful community service and authentic cultural exchange activities fostered through our personal, local connections. Challenging adventure and real-world language learning activity options push students out of their comfort zone and build confidence, leadership skills, and a more global perspective. • Inspired and Attentive Leadership: Our Home Office staff is knowledgeable, personable, and attentive—by calling 303-545-2202, you can always speak with a decision-maker in the company. Our leaders are the best in the industry—experienced (average age of 28, not college students), passionate, and expertly trained—providing a fun, supportive, and safe atmosphere for students to explore their respective country and to grow. And, Global Works was named in Outside Magazine’s 100 Best Places to Work for 2014 (#14) and 2013 (#22)!

“It was really exhilarating and valuable to my understanding of the world." — Scott Dougherty, 2013 Peru participant “My life since Panama has been so great and filled with new experiences that I never would have had without everything that I learned and experienced this summer. Our travels have actually helped me get into college, since I wrote my college essay about a young boy we met on Carti who really changed my perspective on work and pretty much just my life in general. I've actually been accepted at this point to every college I've applied to…For all of that I really just wanted to say thank you for leading an incredible and life-changing trip this past summer.” – Ella Sklaw, 2013 Panama participant

"It was the best thing I've ever done." – Alexander Hill, 2012 Ecuador participant “Sign up immediately! Don’t hesitate if you have fear of the unknown, you are walking into a lifechanging experience.” – Jenna Stein, 2011 Costa Rica participant “This program is truly life-changing. It is really worth it." – Annie Abrams, 2011 Spain participant “My experience was life-changing. I loved how we got to interact with the small community of San Pedro and really connect with the kids who didn’t even speak our language. I also loved meeting everyone on the trip. An exciting and educational adventure!” —Matan Grossman, 2010 Nicaragua participant

“I had an amazing time. The trip was life-changing and the people were unbelievable.” – Jill Horing, 2009 Australia/New Zealand participant “I loved everything. The work, the people, the community; the entire experience was life-changing.” —Maggie Joest, 2009 Puerto Rico participant “The entire experience was probably one of the most life-changing things I have ever done. I improved drastically in my French speaking skills, to the point where when I was speaking English, I was mentally translating it into French. I gained so much confidence from my experience. I also loved the community service. This was probably the greatest thing I have ever done. My entire group became the closest group of kids I have ever known.” – Victoria Quine, 2005 France participant

“This trip changed who I am and gave me a sense of independence in my life from here on out. The people were truly the most wonderful, amazing people I have ever met in my life. OUR ROOTS 20 1 5 Su mmer Ser v i c e A d ven t u r es | OUR ROOT S

Global Works was founded in 1990 by Pam and James “Biff Houldin. After dedicating more than two decades to enriching the lives of young adults through teaching, providing horseback riding programs for physically challenged youth, and running Stone Mountain Adventures, a summer camp at their family farm in Central Pennsylvania, the Houldins dreamed of something more. Pam and Biff envisioned an international program that combined community service and adventure travel as a way to give back to the world. Biff chose Puerto Rico as the destination for the first four-week service program. In an unfortunate coincidence, Hurricane Hugo devastated much of Puerto Rico that September. Amidst the devastation, Biff realized that meaningful service and cultural exchange might be achieved through the reconstruction of homes after this terrible storm. In the summer of 1990, 25 students and five staff embarked for Puerto Rico under the name Caribbean Adventures. After two successful summers in Puerto Rico, Biff expanded to British Columbia in 1992, changing the name of his brainchild to Global Works. Since then, Global Works has steadily expanded to other destinations around the globe. The small office at the Houldin family farm has grown into a close-knit staff based in Boulder, Colorado. We hope to share our passion for travel, teaching, and the search for a profound travel experience with you!

THEY’RE INSPIRATIONAL!

STAFF TRAINING

With so many returning staff (70% each year), our staff leadership is one of our greatest strengths. Global Works hires skilled, knowledgeable, fun-loving women and men who organize and lead trips according to high standards of quality, safety and, of course, fun! Leaders are chosen for: experience working with students, flexibility, organization, language skills, a sense of humor, and responsibility. The majority of our staff work as professional educators and the average staff age is 28 years old.

Each of our staff leaders are required to attend our annual staff training in Boulder, CO. New and veteran staffers come together from a variety of countries, cultures, and educational backgrounds. Our staff training weekend provides an opportunity for leader teams to share service learning ideas and educational techniques, plan the details of their program, and gain knowledge of Global Works’ safety protocols and guidelines. With our Staff Manual as the guide, we hold workshops including:

With at least two adult staff on each summer program, we are able to achieve a sensitive awareness to the needs of our participants and communities. Most of our programs have an additional, on-site country director to serve as logistical backup for our groups, while working closely with the Global Works Home Office in Boulder, Colorado. Each of our staff leaders must be certified in First Aid and CPR and attend our staff training in late spring. Staff training instills a deeper understanding of the Global Works culture of safety and our service-oriented approach to programming.

LANGUAGE IMMERSION 20 1 5 Su mmer Ser v i c e A d ven t u r es | L A N G UAG E IMME RSION

WE BELIEVE THAT THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY FOR STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE LANGUAGE SKILLS IS THROUGH MEANINGFUL, AUTHENTIC INTERACTIONS VIA HOMESTAYS, SERVICE PROJECTS, AND EXPERIENTIAL LANGUAGE LEARNING ACTIVITIES.

Global Works Language Immersion programs foster engaging, supportive environments and provide valuable tools for any level of language learning. The activities on a Global Works language immersion program are designed to be vehicles for language practice and cultural exchange. Our philosophy emphasizes community building, global citizenship, real-world language learning, and reflection. Global Works implements structured language immersion plans that combine language competency evaluations at the beginning and end of every program and then utilizes specific language activities, tools, and practical applications to improve language ability. Our bilingual Trip Leaders facilitate language learning activities throughout the trip.

EXPERIENTIAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES:

THE HOMESTAY EXPERIENCE We have designed the homestay to be very student-friendly. Homestays typically include two students per home with optional single stays available. You will not be isolated with your family as you will still be with the whole Global Works group during most days to work on projects or head out on adventures. Also, you will always know where the trip leaders are and how to reach them. Many evenings, you will find yourself getting together with other students, leaders, and families to participate in various social activities. A homestay experience is a valuable opportunity to improve your language skills by immersing yourself in a situation where communication in French

a family that does not speak much, if any, English. During the day, you will work on service projects with the rest of your group. On weekends, you will spend a majority of the time with your host family doing activities that they enjoy sharing with you. While there is no ‘typical’ homestay experience, many students will stay in touch with their families for years to come.

Global Works has been committed to providing secure and meaningful homestay experiences for the past 25 years. Homestay families are carefully selected through a standardized process of interviews, home visits, contractual agreements, and careful consideration. Safety is our primary consideration when selecting communities and families. We search for

families who have the desire to partner with our groups in service work and cultural exchange. Additionally, families must have a private room for the student(s). All families are committed to providing a caring, secure environment for our participants. Our communities are typically rural and feature a strong community spirit. HOW AM I PLACED WITH MY HOMESTAY FAMILY? There are a number of factors that go into deciding the best placements for homestay families and Global Works trip leaders determine the best match possible. We match participants based on a number of criteria that students provide via our Student Profile Form, including (but not limited to): allergies, diet, language proficiency, age, and personal preference. We do consider students' wishes as far as having children in the home, pets, etc., but we cannot always guarantee that this will be available. Most students stay in paired homestays. However, we do offer students the option for an individual homestay, if requested. Our first priority is to place each participant with a reputable, responsible, and warm family who has an authentic interest in cultural exchange.
