A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Dear Parents, Students, and Alumni, Ever since I began working with Global Works as a trip leader in Costa Rica in 1995, and beginning with the organization’s first Summer Service Adventure trip to Puerto Rico in 1990, Global Works has held a strong belief that community service and student safety in the context of a fun and engaging summer are the essential elements in each and every one of our programs. While many organizations are adding community service programs to their repertoire in recent years, engaging service based adventure programming has always been who and what we are! From a once-upon-a-time high school educator and trip leader to a parent and Global Works Director, you have my commitment that we remain true to those essential core values.

THE GLOBAL WORKS EXPERIENCE OUR CORE PHILOSOPHY We believe that COMMUNITY SERVICE (“with” and not “for” communities) gives us the “purpose” for traveling to a destination and an opportunity to earn people’s trust and good will while also creating fun and engaging CULTURAL EXCHANGE activities that allow us to authentically engage in LANGUAGE IMMERSION and SKILL-FOCUSED experiences.

SAFETY Safety is the most important aspect to any Global Works trip. Planning, prevention, and vigilance are key. Our Home Office staff and leaders continue to attend risk management conferences, medical trainings, and our risk management systems and training programs are seen as a model in the industry. OUR STAFF Quite simply we believe our staff to be the best in the industry. We expect a lot out of them, and we look after them. Our average return rate over the past three years is 70%. That means there are ALWAYS veteran Global Works leaders on each and every trip. We hire experienced, knowledgeable staff, who are educators, ages 23 and older; we do not hire college students. We take great care in hiring people we feel will make outstanding instructors, role models and friends. GROUP SIZE AND SUPERVISION Our leader-student ratio is 1:7. We are committed to small group travel. Each trip has a minimum of 3 adult leaders in the event that a leader needs to provide temporary individual attention to a participant. STAFF ON PRE-ARRANGED GROUP FLIGHTS Global Works arranges group flights and our staff leader(s) travel WITH students on international flights from the group departure airport. WE’RE ALWAYS THERE Our home office staff is available 24-hours a day during the duration of our programs. You will always have the ability, day or night, to reach your son/daughter through our hotline.

SEE AND EXPERIENCE MORE! Global Works itineraries take students to visit three to five different communities within each country, providing students with a cross-section of the culture and landscape. MEANINGFUL AND DOCUMENTED SERVICE HOURS Ten–fifteen (10–15) hours per week of meaningful community service work is completed and documented. Global Works was built around the philosophy of community service; this is, and has always been, one of our core values. A Certificate of Participation is awarded to each student at the end of each trip.

About:

Erik brings nearly twenty years of experience working as a high school educator and travel program administrator to his tenure as Global Works Director. He is a former Peace Corp Volunteer in Bolivia who received undergraduate degrees in International Studies and Spanish and an M.A. in Education from the University of Washington in Seattle. Erik keeps his Spanish language skills fresh by coordinating our Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Nicaragua, and Panama programs. Outside of work, Erik is most likely found spending time with his wife Emily and three children Luke, Ava, and Julia.

Since 1998, Polly has worked with Global Works, first in the field and more recently in the home office. While teaching Spanish at the Westminster School (CT) and Summit Middle School (CO), she spent her summers leading Global Works trips in Costa Rica and Ecuador. Along with her HR duties, she now heads up the France and China programs. Polly enjoys running, hiking, and tele-skiing in the mountains of Colorado with her husband, Fritz, their daughters, Ellie and Hanna, and their dog, Pacha Mama.

OUR ROOTS After two successful summers in Puerto Rico, Biff expanded to Global Works was founded in 1989 by Pam and James “Biff” British Columbia in 1992, changing the name of his brainchild Houldin. After dedicating more than two decades to enriching the lives of young adults through teaching, providing horseback to Global Works. Biff chose Puerto Rico as the destination for the first four-week service program. In an unfortunate coincidence, Hurricane Hugo devastated much of Puerto Rico that September. Amidst the devastation, Biff realized that meaningful service and cultural exchange might be achieved through the reconstruction of homes after this terrible storm. In the summer of 1990, 25 students and 5 staff embarked for Puerto Rico under the name Caribbean Adventures.

OUR Trip Leaders They’re inspirational! With so many returning staff (about 70% each year), we feel our staff leadership is one of our greatest strengths. Global Works continues to hire skilled, knowledgeable, fun-loving women and men who organize and lead trips according to high standards of quality, safety and, of course, fun. They are leaders chosen for: experience working with students, flexibility, organization, language skills, a sense of humor, and responsibility. The majority of our staff also works as professional educators and the average age of our staff is 28. With at least three adult staff on each summer program, we are able to achieve a sensitive awareness to the needs of our participants and communities. Most of our programs have an additional on-site country director to serve as logistical backup for our groups while working closely with the Global Works home base in Boulder, Colorado. Each of our staff leaders must be certified in First Aid and CPR and attend our staff training in late spring.

Staff Training Each of our staff leaders are required to attend our annual staff training in Boulder, CO. New and veteran staffers come together from a variety of countries, cultures, and educational backgrounds. Our staff training weekend provides an opportunity for leader teams to share service learning ideas and educational techniques, plan the details of their program, and gain knowledge of Global Works’ safety protocols and guidelines. With our Staff Manual as the guide, we hold workshops including: Community and Team Building, Homestays and Language Learning, Communication and Documentation, Travel Days, and Medical Scenarios. Like our programs, the days are not “all work, and no play” as Staff Training always includes in a lively costume hoedown. (Make sure you ask your leaders this summer who had the best costume!) Staff training instills in our leaders a deeper understanding of the Global Works culture of safety and our service oriented approach to programming.

Cultural Exchange Programs Just like our first trip to Puerto Rico in 1990, the “Cultural Exchange” Global Works Summer Service Adventure trip offers a blend of community service (estimated 10-15 hours per week), cultural exchange, and adventure activities. While several options exist in Spanish speaking destinations, there are no prior language study requirements and no formal language study involved, we just ask that you come with a willingness to learn and have fun! All Cultural Exchange programs include:

CULTURAL EXCHANGE Journeying to a small village incountry, we immerse ourselves in each of the local cultures. Living, working, and playing alongside our village friends, we expand our experience and vision of the world as we share in community activities and gain a deeper understanding of each other’s lives, traditions, arts, and customs. Global Works trips give you the opportunity to experience the language, spirit, and kindness of the people.

ADVENTURE TRAVEL A well-rounded journey is made extraordinary by its adventures! It is difficult to capture in words or pictures the magical feeling that overcomes one when standing among the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, or the feeling of confidence one has after rafting the Río Sarapiquí, or the pure sense of awe of the natural world when snorkeling in the Caribbean. ITINERARY Days 1-4: Sydney We fly directly to Sydney, Australia where we meet our Global Works leaders at the airport and transfer to our lodging in central Sydney. Travel time is 12 hours, yet we arrive two days later than we departed thanks to the International Date Line! We arrive early in the morning, and have time for orientation activities and rest from the long flight. We explore the Sydney Harbour on an Aboriginal boat tour and get a wonderful introduction to Australia by the traditional owners of the land. We will learn about the indigenous history of the area and maybe a little “Aussie lingo” from our Aboriginal guides. Next, we visit one of the city’s most well-known symbols, the Sydney Opera House, majestically poised between the Harbour Bridge and the Royal Botanic Garden. A trip to the observation deck of the 1,000 foot Sydney Tower rewards us with views of all 600 square miles of Sydney.

Days 9- 18: Brisbane, Frasier Island and Surf Camp During our stay we will participate in a variety of meaningful service projects with schools, environmental groups, and other community organizations. Activities include learning to ride the waves in a surfing paradise, hanging out with the kangaroos and koala bears at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and exploring the beauty of a World Heritage site, Fraser Island.

Days 19-26: Cairns and Great Barrier Reef Our last stop is Cairns (pronounced “Cans”), located on the northern coast of Queensland. After exploring the metropolitan city of Cairns, we will head to our base at Crocodylus, a truly unique resort situated between the World Heritage rainforest areas of the Daintree and Cape Tribulation National Parks, and the Great Barrier Reef. We have the unique opportunity to participate in environmental service work at Daintree, the oldest living rainforest in the world. We punctuate our trip with a snorkeling and SCUBA dive trip at the Great Barrier Reef- a chance of a lifetime! Our evenings will be spent under the Southern Cross reflecting on an incredible four weeks of service, adventure, and friendly people. Come join us!

Days 5-8: The Blue Mountains and Kangaroo Service For the next few days, we will work alongside local volunteers at a wildlife sanctuary outside of Sydney. We contribute our time and effort to it’s education and conservation mission. Here, we get an up-close view of kangaroos, koalas, emus, and many more of Australia’s unique animals. Characterized by sandstone plateas, deep gorges, and high mountain peaks, the Blue Mountains get their name from the blue tinge they have when viewed from far away. See if you can spot a koala bear nibbling on a leaf in one of the many eucalyptus groves during a day hike through the bush!

ITINERARY Days 1-7: Beijing, the Great Wall, and Orientation Both historically and recently, Beijing has been a portal through which China has interacted with the rest of the world. In past centuries, that interaction was marked by violence and the building of the Great Wall to ward off hostile forces to the north. Modern China has sought to reach out to the world in a different manner by hosting the Olympics and using Beijing as a showcase for its achievements. Fittingly, we will begin our tour by visiting the historic Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the modern venues from the 2008 Summer Olympics. One full day we travel to the Great Wall to trek a section of the 5,000 mile iconic landmark. cal care. We will provide the home with invaluable assistance. This experience will allow us to interact with Chinese children, giving them companionship and providing students with perspective on societal issues in China.

Before leaving Beijing, we give back to the city by volunteering at a school for low-income students who have relocated to the capital city from rural China. Previous groups have designed murals, painted classrooms, and built a library from scratch.

During this time, we will get to know one another through orientation activities. We will present basic language lessons for students to provide them with greetings and other conversational skills to use when interacting with locals and bargaining in markets. And don’t forget the food! Our sightseeing and orientation will be punctuated by the sampling of China’s various cuisines (remember to practice your chopstick skills beforehand)!

At Bifengxia we will receive training and information regarding China’s endangered Giant Pandas, and will assist the staff of Bifengxia in their care of these amazing animals. We will interact with the pandas in the park’s many enclosures: large natural areas that provide safe habitat. These facilities were created to teach pandas valuable survival skills before their release into the wild. Students will gain a respect for and understanding of the physical and environmental factors threatening species such as Giant Pandas.

ITINERARY Days 1-4: Orientation and Rafting Our experience begins in a San Jose Central Valley B&B, where students get to know one another and establish goals for the weeks ahead. Here we will learn more about Costa Rica, take a Latin dance class, and loosen our muscles with an overnight rafting trip on one of the spectacular scenic rivers. We will also participate in some basic Spanish lessons so please come ready to learn some key words and phrases!

Days 8-16: Community Stay After our stay in the cloud forest, we travel to a rural highland village for an authentic community experience. While staying in a paired homestay (two students per home), we will work on projects chosen by the community itself. Participants can choose between small construction and/or educational projects each day. Typical small construction projects include: pouring the foundation for a community center, planting organic school gardens, painting and tiling a community kitchen, constructing a plant nursery, completing a sidewalk around the town square. Educational projects include teaching English lessons and organizing and leading a “Día de Actividades” – an event for the community that includes field day competitions, art workshops, music, games and more! Inevitably “los niños” become an integral members of our group!

Days 20-21: Central Valley and Travel Home Leaving paradise is always sad, but our trip back to the Central Valley gives us time to share our memories before we fly home. At a celebratory dinner in a nice restaurant we have an ‘awards ceremony’ to reflect upon our last three weeks together. We realize that Costa Rica and the friends we have made will always be with us!

Days 16-18: Dolphin Tour & Waterfall Adventure After our incredible stay in the mountain village we return to our eco-resort base to unwind, swim and explore the markets before traveling a few hours along the Sunshine Coast where we have the experience of an up close interaction with a school of Spinner Dolphins. The naturalist guides that accompany us on our boat tour will help us to understand these amazing creatures and the environmental issues that they face. You may even get a chance to swim with them! After our dolphin encounter our group will take a hike to a tropical rainforest waterfall with views of the Pacific. It is a perfect place to reflect on our time on the mainland before traveling to the outer islands for the last component of our journey.

Days 19-26 Island Exploration & Beach Adventure After circumnavigating Fiji’s big island, Viti Levu, and working alongside our community hosts, we will travel by ferry to the world famous Yasawa Islands. We spend the final five days at a small island resort where time will be spent snorkeling above colorful coral, windsurfing, sea kayaking, playing beach volleyball or simply soaking up the sun. We will have a day of PADI Certified diver instruction (a SCUBA resort course). You will find yourself enchanted by the underwater dream worlds! As we explore the reefs and view dazzling colored fish, it is easy to see why Fiji is known for its world class diving! Days 6-15: Trek & Mountain Village To gain a full appreciation and understanding of Fijian culture, we set off from our beach base on a trek to our mountain community. This hike provides beautiful scenery and ample time for discussion about the Fijian lifestyle we are going to experience. When we arrive, a “sevu sevu” welcome ceremony inducts our group into the tribe for the duration of our stay. During our community stay we eat in a communal setting where our village family spoils us with inspired banquets full of fruits, breads, and native dishes. In our first few days, we will learn about the sustainable community development plan. The villages we work with have mapped out the need for health, education and community facilities. We will work alongside our hosts on projects that contribute to this movement, lending our time, labor and financial support. During the past thirteen summers, we have built nurses stations, constructed and restored community buildings and classrooms, led classes teaching English to village kids and planted thousands of young trees for the benefit of future generations.

Days 12-15: Raglan From Rotorua, our group will travel to the western coast of the North Island and the quiet beach community of Raglan. Our joint community projects involve organics and permaculture, conservation work, planting trees, and environmental service. When we are not working, we will be hanging out with our new friends and enjoying New Zealand’s incredible beauty. Activities include learning to surf at the famous Raglan beach break, hiking on Mt. Karioi, and a day trip to experience black water rafting through the world-renowned Waitomo Caves. Our final New Zealand stop is Auckland, “the City of Sails.” On our last evening in New Zealand we will have time to explore and take in dinner in the heart of the city and reflect on the first leg of this amazing journey.

Days 16-26: Fiji Islands Although it will be a sad farewell as we board our flight, our eyes will remain wide with excitement and anticipation as we head towards the sandy beaches of the Fiji Islands. After a short flight, we will travel to a remote coastal village. A true paradise in the Pacific, this Fijian village is complete with volcanic mountains, coral reefs, waterfalls, and friendly people. We will essentially become part of this coastal community, living and working at the relaxed pace of “Fiji-time.” After a formal “sevu sevu” welcoming ceremony, the village will open its heart and homes to us. Working side by side with our Fijian friends, we will help with a community construction project, such as building a nursery or library for the village school. During our days here, we will work on projects, learn about local customs, and participate in adventure activities such as SCUBA diving! Our stay in Fiji will provide us with the extraordinary experience of living a communal village lifestyle.

Days 10-11: Rotorua and the Central North Island Before heading across New Zealand to the wild West Coast we will visit Rotorua and the TE PUIA Marae. The local community will welcome us, sharing the spirit, legends, dance, song, food, vitality and warmth that are the essence of New Zealand’s native Maori culture. We visit the geothermal wonderland of the central North Island and gain a true appreciation for the Maori people and their unique culture. Here, an outdoor pursuit center provides us with safe, professional guidance on activities such as high ropes courses and rock climbing.

Days 1-9: Bay Of Islands After arriving in Auckland, we will travel north to the beautiful “Bay of Islands.” A visit to a hot spring along the way will help relax away the day of travel. After we arrive, our home in the community of Kerikeri will provide us with an incredible backdrop for teambuilding activities, getting to know one another, and learning about the history and culture of “Aotearoa.” Here we will work with local volunteers at an ecological reserve. Our projects include construction and conservation work, planting trees, and rebuilding habitat for New Zealand’s endangered national bird, the ‘kiwi.’ Our comfortable eco-lodge will provide our end-of-the-day resting place where the call of the kiwi and the sound of lapping waves will soothe us to sleep after a rewarding day’s work. When we are not working, we will enjoy New Zealand’s incredible beauty and adventure opportunities alongside our Kiwi friends. We take day trips to Northland’s awe-inspiring Ancient Kauri Forest, Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s northern tip, and the place where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet.

Days 17-19 (Session 1)/ Days 12-13 (Session 2): San Juan del Sur: We travel to the Pacific Coast and the town of San Juan del Sur, famous for it’s unique combination of rainforest and ocean settings. We’ll spend a full day with options to enjoy boogie boarding or snorkeling. This is a major sea turtle nesting area, with some turtles present year-round. In addition to the aforementioned turtles, other common fish seen in the area include scorpion fish, noisy parrot fish, rays, eels, anemones, and star fish. The beach and wave conditions in this area also provide the perfect opportunity for everyone to catch some playful waves.

Days 20-21 (Session 1)/ Days 14-15 (Session 2) Granada and Travel Home With new perspectives and open hearts, we’ll prepare for our trip to come to an end. Departing is sad, but the final trip back to our hotel in Managua allows us to share our memories before we fly home. A celebratory dinner at a nice restaurant and an ‘awards ceremony’ allows us to reflect upon our time together. We realize that the Nicaraguan friends we have made will always be with us!

Days 11-16 (Session 1)/ Days 3-11 (Session 2): Ometepe Island We’ll travel south to Lake Nicaragua and the island of Ometepe. The island was formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua. Its name also comes from Nahuatl words: ome (two) and tepetl (mountain). The people of the island are stoic and lively, and will be sure to share their love of music, art, and life with us. Here we’ll also work alongside villagers on community-

Days 3-10: Villa del Carmen (Session 1 only) We’ll travel to the southwest part of the country and the quaint agricultural village of Villa del Carmen, a town is famous for its sugar cane production. We stay at the beautiful Quelentaro Natural Reserve and Farm and get to know the community of Villa del Carmen with an introduction to the school and service projects we’ll be working on. We’ll spend a week working alongside villagers on community-initiated endeavors to repair and build hand-dug wells and wash stations in the schools. We’ll also contribute to on-going reforestation efforts and water sanitation projects, and create English lessons for the young students. There will be time to explore the area’s natural and man-made wonders such as the hundreds of murals that canvas the country, depicting everything Nicaraguan, from its indigenous roots to its modern-day educational reforms. After all our hard work, we’ll take a day trip to Pochomil beach for some ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and a picnic at the beach. After watching the sunset over the ocean we get back for a relaxing night and a closing ceremony and bonfire at Quelentaro Reserve.

Days 1-2: Orientation - Granada (Sessions 1 & 2) We fly into the capital city of Managua, which the indigenous Nahuatl people called Mana-ahuac, the “city surrounded by water.” We’ll learn quickly how this city earned its name as fly into the city and get our first glimpse of the majestic Lake Managua. From there, we’ll travel on to colonial city of Granada to settle into our hostel and get an introduction to this land of revolution, poetry, and wonder. ITINERARY Days 1-6: Villa del rÍo For the first week of our adventure we will be living at Hacienda Don Noel and working in the community of Villa del Rio. The hacienda is a homey ‘camp-like’ lodge in the hills just miles from the coast and beautiful Playa Mar Chiquita. After a day of orientation, we’ll be ready to dig into our work at the nearby community of ‘Villa.’ This close-knit village is comprised of relocated families that are building their homes and are thrilled to have students come join them in work and play. Most mornings and afternoons we’ll spend fixing up homes, working on education projects with local kids, and sharing home cooked meals and laughs with community members. In the late afternoon and evenings we’ll enjoy group activities such as relaxing at local beaches, enjoying a Puerto Rican beach barbeque, hosting a pool party with local families, and participating in various cross-cultural activities. On our final day we will take an excursion to the Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park and enjoy one of the most extensive and reputable zip line tours in Puerto Rico.

Days 7-11: Patillas and El Yunque Rainforest The next segment of our adventure will be spent at an ecolodge located just outside the quaint town of Patillas in the southeastern region of the island. This amazing group lodging facility is located among acres of rainforest and is only minutes away from the beaches of the Caribbean. Our group will continue to work on housing projects as well as environmental projects in El Yunque Rainforest. Learn about the ecology of the rainforest and swim in hidden waterfalls. Evening activities include salsa dance lessons with live musicians and a jewelry making workshop led by local artisans. Days 12- 15: Luquillo Beach and Old San Juan Next we will travel to the northeast corner of the island and find out why this is the Caribbean’s hotspot for beautiful beaches and a laid-back vibe. As a reward for all our hard work, we’ll spend the last few days at a lovely guesthouse right near the beach. We’ll have the opportunity to spend a couple mornings boogie-boarding or challenging ourselves with surf lessons taught by professional surf instructors. The wave conditions in Luquillo provide the perfect opportunity for all levels to hang ten! One afternoon we’ll enjoy a guided catamaran excursion to the beautiful and desolate Icacos islands. On the penultimate day of our trip we head into Old San Juan where we’ll visit the historic fortresses and artisan markets. In the evening we will bring our action packed journey to a close, sharing our experiences at a heartfelt farewell dinner.

ITINERARY DAYS 1-3: BANGKOK - FLOATING MARKETS & MONASTERIES We fly as a group directly to Bangkok for three days of orientation and exploration. After resting from our flight, we get the chance to meander through the extensive Chatuchak Market and float through the canals on a restored teak rice barge converted to a ﬂoating classroom. While in Bangkok we will be treated to a guided tour of Wat Po temple, famous for it’s reclining Buddha. Local guides will help us to learn about Thailand’s rich history and culture before we embark on an overnight train to Chiang Mai. DAYS 4-7: CHIANG MAI Upon arrival in the northern cultural hub of Chiang Mai, we will continue our orientation with a seminar on Thai history and culture and a visit to Doi Suthep Temple, which sits on the mountain overlooking the city. We begin projects at Pun Pun Earthen Building Centre, where activities include a discussion about Buddhism at local temple with one of the monks and a visit to the Night Bazaar.

DAYS 8-13: ELEPHANT NATURE PARK AND HILL TRIBE VILLAGES Our service continues at Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center. After spending two days with these gentle giants, we begin our journey to the small, rural mountain communities which are home to Thailand’s unique hill tribe population. During our time here, our service work will include classroom construction and English Camp, where we will teach local kids and those from neighboring communities. Our Thai hosts will share their knowledge of native crafts, such as traditional weaving, bamboo artistry, and traditional songs with us.

DAYS 20-21: BANGKOK AND TRAVEL HOME The final stage of our journey brings us back to Bangkok, where we are able to reflect as a group about our three amazing weeks in Thailand. After a final group dinner, we board our plane to Los Angeles, taking with us many fond memories from the “land of smiles.”

DAYS 14-19: ANDAMAN ISLANDS ADVENTURE The islands of Southern Thailand top many traveler’s “favorites” lists. What better way to explore them than by sea kayak! We will then have the opportunity to visit a small fishing village on one of the islands, where the locals will welcome us and teach us about their way of island living, which has been untouched for many years. Days 5-7: Tikondani From Lusaka, we will take a five hour bus ride east to the Katete district and Tikondani Community Center. The center is a community-based organization that provides comfortable lodging for volunteers who come to work on micro-finance projects such as vegetable gardens and souvenirs and crafts, like weaving, knitting, sewing, pottery, and soap making. And, of course, the ghost dance in the village is a must see. Come see it for yourself! Days 8-12: Mfuwe and South Luangwa National Park Continuing another 4 hours by bus, we make our way to Mfuwe, a populated community located on the renowned South Luangwa National Park. Located in the eastern part of the country, the Park covers an area of 3,500 square miles. Famous for its unspoiled beauty and its varied habitats, it supports one of Africa’s richest concentrations of game and birdlife. Over 50 species of large mammal and over 400 species of bird thrive in this last haven of wild Africa. Here, students will see large elephant herds of up to 50 individuals, an abundant number of buffalo, fourteen antelope species and Thornicroft’s giraffe, unique to this valley. This area is also known for its healthy population of leopard and lion. The next few days are spent in workshops and service projects with game scouts, park wardens, and safari guides. We will explore the park and learn about human/wildlife conflicts and wildlife management strategies in the region. Visits to community organizations such as Tribal Textiles, the Elephant Orphanage Project, and a number of local schools will be arranged. A primary focus here is the work of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) which works with over 500 local farmers in peanut butter and honey production. Students will also take game drives in the park where they find all the magnificent animals of Africa. Days 13-17: Chiawa Community (Lower Zambezi Region) and School Project A transfer from Mfuwe back to the capital of Lusaka will give us the opportunity to re-group and enjoy an afternoon at the modern shopping centre before departing for the rural community

of Chiawa the following day. This next portion of the program is focused specifically on community development and educational projects while staying at a basic mobile tented camp on the grounds of Chiawa High School, a rural community on the edge of a magnificent Lower Zambezi National Park. Sports, specifically soccer and netball, are extremely important to the people of Chiawa and students can participate in a variety of athletic, music, and dance activities within the community. Days 18-21: Munyameshi Camp (Lower Zambezi Region) and Community Development Project After a few days in Chiawa, students travel by boat downriver to Munyameshi Camp, a charming riverside camp on the banks of the Zambezi River. Here, students have a few days to work on a rural community development project building a chicken coop while also relaxing and exploring the surrounding wilderness. This area is home to the magnificent wild animals of Africa, with plenty of elephant, hippo, crocodiles, lion, leopard, antelope, zebra, and warthog. Students have the opportunity to explore the river by canoe or motor boat, go fishing, and take guided game walks.

Days 1-4: Travel and Lusaka Orientation The group will embark on a flight from the US through Johannesburg, South Africa and continue on to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. From our safe and comfortable accommodations at Eurkeka Camp, we will begin with an orientation to get to learn more about one another and the country of Zambia. Visits to both private and public schools will be arranged, allowing students to experience the division of classes within Zambia and engage with students of their own age. This provides them with the opportunity for an interactive exchange of cultural heritage and political history.

Days 22-23: Livingstone and Victoria Falls While staying in comfortable tented chalets at the Waterfront, located on the banks of the Zambezi, students will enjoy a variety of adventure orientated activities. Activities include an elephant-back safari, a visit to Victoria Falls, and a boat trip on the Zambezi River. The Zambezi also provides a perfect backdrop for debriefing and preparation for re-entry and travel home. Days 24-25: Travel Home Leaving paradise is always sad, but we realize that Zambia and the friends we have made will always be with us! The group will return with flights from Livingstone to Jo-berg and then onto the US and home!

Language Immersion Programs Global Works Language Immersion trips involve the same elements as the Cultural Exchange trip (community service, cultural exchange, and adventure activities) with an added Language focus. Participants engage their second language skills each day through our experiential education curriculum and, in most programs, an 8-12 day homestay experience.

2012 Summer Service Adventures | LANGUAGE IMMERSION

Global Works Language Immersion Programs offer students the opportunity to improve Spanish, Mandarin, and French language skills while engaging in service work and cultural activities. Facilitated by our bilingual leaders, all of our Immersion Programs include leaders that speak primarily in the target language while also facilitat-

ing daily Experiential Learning Activities designed to enhance language learning through guided interactions with other native speakers. On a daily basis, participants may find themselves interviewing a local soccer star, teaching in their host community’s elementary school, or working with their host moms to compile a book of local traditions and recipes. The highlight of most Immersion Programs is a homestay with a friendly family where speaking skills improve as the culture and language are absorbed. (The exception is the China and Spain 2 Week programs where we will visit families, but stay together in group lodging.) While a minimum of two years of classroom study is recommended, students at any level of language proficiency

with a positive attitude and an open mind will benefit from these programs! All Global Works Language Immersion staff members are bilingual and each program has at least one “veteran or native” leader who has spent time in the destination. Each student’s progress is monitored throughout the trip and successful participation in the program is acknowledged with a Certificate of Completion. How does Global Works select the homestay families?

What do we do during a typical day in the homestay?

Global Works has been committed to providing secure and meaningful homestay experiences for the past 21 years. Homestay families are carefully chosen through a standardized process of interviews, home visits by our country directors, contractual agreements, and careful consideration for our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; privacy and safety. In addition, we search for families who have the desire to partner with our groups in service work and cultural exchange. Most families live in simple homes and are committed to providing a caring, secure environment for our participants.

Participants eat meals, sleep, and spend weekends with their homestay families. Most weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings, the groups come together to work on projects and engage in organized activities with fellow Global Works participants and members of the community. We match participants based on a number of criteria that you provide on a Homestay Information Form, including (but not limited to): allergies, diet, age, language proficiency and personal preference. We do consider participants wishes as far as having kids and teenagers in the home (a vast majority do), etc. but cannot always guarantee this will be available. Our first priority is a reputable, responsible, and warm family with an authentic interest in cultural exchange.

Definitely! We encourage participants to write letters and emails and send photos to their homestay families after the trip. This is a wonderful way to stay connected to the host community. Our homestay families especially love to receive mail from their â&#x20AC;&#x153;Global Works son/daughterâ&#x20AC;? during holiday times and birthdays!

When will I find out about the family that I will live with? Generally, our Global Works leaders will determine which participant will stay with which family once they have met and spent a day or two with the group. We find that this greatly increases the possibility of excellent matches. For this reason, participants will find out about their family while on their trip, not prior to departure.

Days 19-25: Malargüe and the Central Andes After a week and a half of some hard work, and with improved Spanish, we will bus to Malargüe for some of the country’s most exciting outdoor pursuits. Since it is winter in the “Land of Sun,” we’ll hit the beautiful peaks of the Andes for some recreation, relaxation, and more valuable service opportunities. The ski resort of Las Leñas, located outside of Malargüe, is home to some of the best powder in the world! With a backdrop of the breath-taking Andean peaks, we’ll take to the slopes with two full days of skiing and boarding in some of the driest powder in South America! For those who prefer less vertical pursuits, there

Days 16-18: Iguazú Falls From Bonpland, our group will take a short bus trip to one of the most spectacular and must-see sights in South America, Iguazú Falls. Made up of roughly 270 falls along 1.67 miles of the Iguazú River, the power, size, and noise of the falls are truly an incredible experience! Days 26-28: Buenos Aires and Travel Home We will round out our trip with a few more days in this fantastic metropolis known as much for its connection to Europe as for its own romantic culture steeped in art, music, and fashion. Save your money for this last week, as Buenos Aires is renowned for its shopping! Buenos Aires is one of the best places to find high-end foods, fashionable clothing, and cutting edge accessories at the cheapest prices. A final celebratory dinner and show in Buenos Aires will provide us with an opportunity to exchange stories and laughter from the month gone by. Don’t miss this incredible adventure!

Days 5-15: Bonpland and Homestays For the next week and a half, this small town in the Misiones province will be ‘home’ to our group. With a pleasant climate and warm, friendly people, Bonpland is an ideal place for homestays and community service projects. As many of the families do not speak English, your Spanish language skills will improve daily. With an expanding population, there are overcrowded schools that need our help assisting in the classroom with educational projects as well as constructing new classrooms. You’ll feel the sense of accomplishment in pouring a cement floor for a school classroom or teaching English to young Argentinean students eager to learn. The community is teeming with youth excited to participate in cultural exchange and work projects together. We will also enjoy day excursions to the famous Misiones Jesuitas and the markets of Posadas.

In addition to touring many of the scenic and historic sites in the city, we will spend an afternoon with professional musicians and dancers who will demonstrate the hypnotic rhythm and steps of the tango, the beat of Buenos Aires for over a hundred years.

ITINERARY Days 1-5: Beijing, the Great Wall, and Orientation Both historically and recently, Beijing has been a portal through which China has interacted with the rest of the world. In past centuries that interaction was marked by violence and the building of the Great Wall to ward off hostile forces to the north. Modern China has sought to reach out to the world in a different manner by hosting the Olympics and using Beijing as a showcase for its achievements. Fittingly, we will begin our tour by visiting the historic Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the modern venues from the 2008 Summer Olympics. With spectacular views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain One full day we travel to the Great Wall to trek a section of the above and the Yangzhe River below, this is an opportunity not 5,000 mile iconic landmark. to be missed!

We’ll make out home at a cozy family-run guesthouse 15 km north on Lijiang in the Naxi village of Yuhu. Yuhu is located at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, providing views of spruce glades and alpine glaciers. While there, our mornings will be devoted to studying Mandarin with trained local instructors. Class size is limited to 8 students to assure individualized attention and provide appropriate practice. In the afternoons, we’ll experience rural Chinese life first hand. We’ll tend the garden, visit the monastery, and learn to prepare authentic Chinese cuisine. We’ll make longer excursions as well: the yak meadow on the brink of the Tibetan Plateau and the fabled Shangri La or “paradise on earth” are just two options. One full day is spent trekking along the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Naturally, it is not all work and no play! Xi’an is home to a number of famous sites—the Terra Cotta Warriors, Big Goose Pagoda, and Great Mosque. We also have time for some shopping in the expansive marketplace of Xi’an. For our final evening, we go out for a traditional hot pot meal, take in a local theater presentation, have plenty of time to share stories and cement the friendships you have made on this amazing adventure.

Days 6- 17 : yunnan Province, Lijiang and Yuhu Village We will continue our trip to southwest China with various adventures in and around quixotic Lijiang. Lijiang has maintained its historic architecture, an environment made even more authentic by the numerous canals cutting through the city. The cobblestone alleys and narrow lanes literally transport you to China’s past.

Before leaving Beijing, we give back to the city by volunteering at a school for low-income students who have re-located to the capital city from the rural Southern China. Previous groups have designed murals, painted classrooms, and built a library from scratch.

Day 18-21: Xi’an and Orphanage Volunteer Xi’an is our final destination and the place where students will reminisce about their trip before returning home. But before we go, we have some important work to do. We volunteer with children in one of China’s only orphanages dedicated to serving children in need of medical care. We will provide the home with invaluable assistance. The exceptional children we will meet have heightened needs for a loving, nurturing environment due to congenital disorders that are not addressed by their own families or other orphanages. This experience will allow us to interact with Chinese children, giving them companionship and providing students with perspective on societal issues in China.

Days 3-10: Amazon Adventure and Community Service The excitement grows as we bus down to the city of Tena. Perched in a beautiful and accessible region of the Amazon rainforest, a jungle lodge will be our base for this portion of the trip. Activities here include rafting, rainforest educational tours and projects, and inspirational service work providing a playground for a nearby school. Evening activities like night hikes, dance lessons, and games will complete our productive days here in the Amazon. Days 11-12: Papallacta Hot Springs and Mountain Bike Adventure Next stop, Papallacta hot springs and a downhill mountain bike adventure! After a beginner/intermediate level mountain bike adventure surrounded by spectacular views, there is no better way to relax than a soak in the stream-fed hot springs with your fellow riders. Day 13: Otavalo A trip to Ecuador would be incomplete without a visit to the bustling city of Otavalo, host to the largest indigenous artisan marketplace in the world! Otavalo’s colorful artisan market is a shopper’s paradise and a wonderful opportunity to practice your Spanish and hone those bargaining skills. Days 14- 20: Homestay Community Our small homestay village is located in the high valleys in the Northern Sierra of Ecuador. For the next week, our friendly and hospitable host families will open their hearts and homes to us; you will quickly feel a part of the family! The homestay portion of the trip is without a doubt the most rewarding and a favorite among participants. While meals, evenings, and weekends are reserved for homestay family time, our group gathers daily to work on projects. In the past, we have constructed community gardens, built bridges, and worked alongside the women’s cooperative in their markets. During our homestay days, work and play go hand in hand!

GALPAGOS OPTIONAL ADD ON Days 21- 27: Galapagos Archipelago For those traveling on, we take a flight from Quito to Guayaquil and then continue directly on to the Unesco World Heritage site of the Galapagos Islands. Our professionally guided journey through this unique landscape begins on the island of Santa Cruz. We will join our Galapagos guides, board our boats, and head to Isabela, the largest island of the archipelago. Lodging will take place in hotels and days will be full of adventure and exploration. Our stay in Isabela is highlighted by a trek along Sierra Negra volcano, famous for its gigantic crater measuring 10.5 by 7 kilometers in size! This educational and exciting adventure continues on to Santa Cruz where we can view nesting sea turtles and an array of fish while snorkeling the Concha Perla. We’ll be sure to visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center for an introduction to “Lonesome George”, the most famous of the giant tortoises we will see. Then we’re off to our third island paradise, San Cristobal. Time here is highlighted by snorkeling at the remains of an underwater volcano, better known as Kicker Rock. We wrap up our action-packed and educational experience in Galapagos with a celebratory dinner before heading back to Quito. Days 28: Quito and Travel Home The final day, we fly home to the United States via Quito, reunite with friends and family and share our new experiences. ITINERARY Days 11- 22: Carcassonne From Provence, we are off to our homestay town near the Mediterranean! We will travel to the beautiful medieval town of Carcassonne to meet and stay with our gracious host families for 12 days. It’s a great opportunity to test your language skills, make friends, and absorb the many cultural differences found in day-to-day living and conversation. Some days are “family days” when we will spend time immersed in the life of our host families. One of our family days will be Bastille Day, and we will be treated to a local view of this popular holiday! We will get together as a group and spend several days alongside local archeologists working on restoration and conservation projects. In addition, we volunteer at a local youth summer camp and participate in a photographic project for the chamber of commerce. We also have time to take excursions to the beach, through the fortress of Carcassonne, and one day is spent on a cave exploration and zip-line tour.

Days 1-5: The French Alps and Environmental Projects Upon arrival in Paris we travel by private coach to Grenoble and the majestic French Alps. Each year we stay in a small village far from the tourist crowds where down to earth, open-hearted people make for a warm reception! This is an ideal setting for our orientation to the French culture. During these days we will focus on cultural exchange and language fluency by working alongside local friends on environmental and historical restoration initiatives. There is also time to play! The towering scenery is breathtaking and adventure awaits us. During our stay in the Alps we challenge ourselves with activities such as an overnight hike, whitewater rafting, and a ropes course. We also begin the service component of our trip by participating in projects such as trail maintenance and stone-wall building. Our group stays together in a gîte or traditional stone-wall building mountain lodge that provides traditional French meals and hospitality.

From Panama City we travel by bus to our small homestay village in the Chiriquí Province. For the next week, we have the opportunity to live, work, and play with the exceptionally hospitable people of this community. Students live two students to a home. The members of the host families do not speak English, so our Spanish language learning curve rises quickly! Upon arrival, we greet our homestay families and head to the welcome fiesta. The evening includes introductions of students and families, dinner, music, and dancing. During the day we work alongside our host brothers and sisters on service projects that are determined and coordinated with community members prior to the trip. In the past we have worked with rural indigenous communities in the NgobeBugle reserve. Examples of previous community projects have included building the foundation for student dorm rooms, constructing a lunchroom for the school, teaching English at the primary school, and painting a school classroom. ITINERARY Days 1-2: Lima and Orientation in Urubamba The group flies together into Lima, transfers to Cusco, and takes a bus to Urubamba. We settle into our B&B for introductory activities, including a team scavenger hunt, that gets the group speaking Spanish and working together.

Days 6-14: Homestay in Urubamba Time to transition to our homestay families in Urubamba. For the next week, our friendly and hospitable host families will open their hearts and homes to us; you will quickly feel like part of the family! As most of the families do not speak English, your Spanish language skills will improve daily. While meals, evenings, and weekends are reserved for homestay family time, our group gathers daily to work on projects. We will collaborate with our host community and local schools on projects they deem necessary. Previous projects have included constructing playgrounds, building a community center, painting a school classroom, and working with local youth on educational activities. We spend our afternoons exploring the region, hiking, learning local arts and crafts, and engaging in cultural activities with new local friends. On the last day, we throw a final fiesta to celebrate our hard work and thank our new friends and families. Days 15-16: Machu Picchu We arrive by train at the small, scenic town of Aguas Calientes. Accompanied by a local guide, we rise early to behold the majestic lost city of the Incas. Nestled high in the mysterious Andes, Machu Picchu is a phenomenal and dramatic way to highlight this adventure of a lifetime in Peru!

Days 19-25: Galapagos Archipelago A short flight from Quito takes us to Guayaquil and directly on to the ‘Capital of Paradise,’ the Island of San Cristobal. After settling into our cozy hotel, we’ll visit the Galapagos Interpretation Center to get oriented on the geography, social and natural history, and wildlife of the archipelago. Our guides accompany us on boat rides each day where we’ll encounter an amazing diversity of marine and land species. Later, we travel to the islands of Isabela and Santa Cruz where we will enjoy snorkeling in the radiant green waters while sea turtles gracefully swim by and sea lions frolic around us. White sand beaches, sunbathing seals and panoramas of lava rocks await you!

Days 3-5: Urubamba and Rafting The group will stay together at a centrally located lodge while we get to know the locals through service projects and adventure activities. An incredible day of rafting on the Urubamba River will provide further opportunity for team building and fun. We also prepare for our upcoming homestays through language lessons and homestay role-playing.

Day 26: Departure Our final night, we enjoy a celebratory final dinner. The next day, we fly home to the United States via Guayaquil. Our friends and family greet us when we arrive to share our new experiences. It is the end of a trip, but a beginning to a new awareness about yourself and the world. Days 23-27: Barcelona and Travel Home Next, our group travels to Barcelona! Prepare yourself for the fascinating buildings designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Familia cathedral which we will see on a leisurely bike tour around the city. We’ll combine visits to the monuments and museums of this fantastic city with time to hang out and enjoy the beach. Enjoy a day trip on a tree-top canopy tour and explore the incredible Boquería market. A final celebratory dinner will provide the backdrop as we exchange laughter and stories from the past month. Days 13-22: Sierra de Gredos Homestay After Amayuelas our group takes a day trip to Ávila before continuing on to a community just south of the Gredos Mountains (a few hours west of Madrid) where families are eager to meet and welcome you into their homes. For the next two weeks you’ll be able to practice your Spanish with your homestay family. Your confidence and language skills will improve with the help of informal Spanish lessons focused on supporting and enhancing your language learning and interactions with your family. We’ll spend most weekdays working on community renovation projects such as sanding, painting, and fixing up a youth center or historical building. During several afternoons you’ll enjoy swimming with local Spanish youth in the natural

Days 8-12: Amayuelas: A Model Community of Sustainable Living From Segovia we travel to the small town of Amayuelas de Abajo, a formerly abandoned Spanish town that has been reclaimed by Spaniards looking to create a sustainable community. Amayuelas provides an inspiring setting for many interesting projects during our stay. Our students break into small groups and work with Spanish community members on various tasks such as making adobe bricks for construction, building a fence or wall for livestock, making bread, or working in the greenhouse. Naturally, it is not all work and no play; in the late afternoons and evenings there will be time for exploration and activities, as well as a soccer game and “Spanish Olympics” with the locals.

Being so close to the city, we’ll be able to visit the beautiful Alhambra, a moorish palace-city and “paradise on earth” for the rulers who lived here in the 13th century. We’ll get on our dancing shoes for a flamenco dance lesson and enjoy a performance at one of the caves in the gypsy neighborhood known as Sacromonte. The lessons learned here stay with students for a lifetime. Excursions through Andalucia to Cordoba or Sevilla are also an option during these days.

As we learn over the course of the week, FES is a very special community composed of people from all walks of life throughout Spain, Europe, and even Africa! Days 3-7: Soccer Academy and Excursions Each morning for the next five days will be devoted to developing and improving soccer skills. A soccer academy located in the suburb of Alajuela will provide intensive training with world class players and coaches. In addition to the soccer program, the group will take excursions to nearby Poás volcano, cool off in a local pool, and explore other Central Valley highlights. We’ll unwind with games and activities at our bed and breakfast. Days 8-14: Homestay and Service Projects We depart from the Central Valley for an authentic cultural and community service experience in rural Costa Rica. Students will live two per home in a small community where we will conduct service projects, play soccer mejengas or pick-up games with the local students, and experience Costa Rican life first hand. Our community projects are designed to boost the local economy. We’ll build soccer fields, goals, and kiosks so the locals can host regional tournaments. Global Works participants will also plan and teach English lessons and organize an event for the community that includes field day competitions, art workshops, music, games and more. Day 15: Central Valley and Travel Home Leaving paradise is always sad, but our trip back to the Central Valley gives us time to share our memories before we fly home. Science, Sea Turtles, and Rainforest 2-Week Science and Service Program Despite its size, the Central American nation of Costa Rica is considered to be one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Costa Rica serves as a global model of conservation and land stewardship, with nearly thirty percent of its lands preserved and protected. Spend two weeks exploring and working to further protect the cloud forests, tropical rivers, rainforest canopies, and coastal habitats of this impressive nation.

ITINERARY Days 1-4: Los Santos Highlands, Pacuare River Students fly into the Central Valley and the country’s capital of San Jose and are transported high above the city to a small community run eco-lodge which will serve as our home base for exploring the diversity of Costa Rica’s volcanic interior. The program begins with dynamic orientation activities followed by a visit to the National Institute of Biological Diversity, where students will learn more about the many distinct life zones of the country. An overland transfer alongside some of the region’s most impressive volcanoes takes participants to the pristine Pacuare River on the precipitous Caribbean slope. Two days are spent running the river’s rapids, camping along its banks, and learning about the surrounding tropical rainforest canopy from professional river guides and naturalists. Days 5-8: Cloudforest Participants hike deep into the misty cloudforest of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, the largest private reserve in Costa Rica. Students work alongside park rangers on environmentally sustainable projects designed to preserve and to protect the staggering six life zones that are encompassed within the reserve’s boundaries. In addition to environmental service work, participants will learn of the initiatives to preserve this ecologically fragile environment for future generations. Days 9-13: Osa Peninsula, Coastal/Marine Environments Travelling south along the Pacific Coast towards the Osa Peninsula, students partner with a local organization working with the native Sea Turtle population. Learn about sensitive turtle habitat and population factors. Activities may include beach cleaning activities, night watches, searching the beach for turtle eggs, taking scientific data, and caring for the nesting sites. We also visit Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge. Our program partners with local schools and conservation organizations to establish wildlife corridors that provide protection for mammals migrating from the highlands to the coast. A snorkeling expedition to the idyllic Canos Island allows students to peer deep into the region’s terrestrial and marine diversity. Days 14-15: Travel Days, Central Valley Program participants leave the lush rainforest of the Osa Peninsula and make their way over rugged mountains back to the Central Valley. Students celebrate the new knowledge gained and their efforts to protect the biodiversity of this special place in a final dinner before boarding a group flight back home.

Central America encompasses some of the most pristine and epic surfing conditions in the world, and the Pacific breaks of Costa Rica are the region’s gem. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced surfer, you can experience the unparalleled beauty of Costa Rica’s remote surf breaks and warm people in our program’s perfect balance between adventure and service activities.

ITINERARY Days 1-3: Orientation and Rafting Our experience begins in the San Jose Central Valley area B&B, where we’ll river raft through a tropical rainforest on Class II and III rapids while get to know one another and Costa Rica. Days 4-8: South Pacific Region/Dominical, Uvita, and Ballena National Marine Park After a quick orientation, we travel to the southwest region near the communities of Uvita-Dominical and the Ballena National Marine Park. We’ll begin at Colonia Beach in the Ballena National Marine Park which has a sandy bottom to smooth perfectly shaped waves to learn or progress to the next level. In the upcoming days we’ll find the best surf conditions among the breaks at Palo Seco, Playa Rey, and Playa Dominical among others. Each afternoon the group will spend a few hours working on environmental service projects within the Ballena National Marine Park such as small construction work on the park’s facilities, reforestation and trail work, and environmental education campaigns with nearby communities. DAYS 9-14: NORTH PACIFIC REGION/PLAYA GRANDE AND LAS BAULAS NATIONAL PARK Traveling northward along the Pacific Coast, densely vegetated rainforest hills give way to tropical dry forest and the savannah landscapes of Guanacaste Province. Costa Rican northernmost province is home to renowned surf spots such as Tamarindo, Playa Grande, and the famed Witch’s Rock. Again, participants will split the day by riding the region’s waves and working with conservation groups to protect beaches which serve as one of the most important nesting sites for leatherback sea turtles in the world. In addition we’ll work with an after school youth group, Abriendo Mentes, to share environmental education and cultural exchange activities. At a final celebration on the beach we’ll enjoy an ‘awards ceremony’ to reflect upon our last two weeks together. Day 15: Liberia and Travel Home Leaving paradise is always sad, but our group flight from nearby Liberia International airport to Houston gives us time to share our memories before we catch connections home. We realize that the friends we have made and the waves surfed will always be with us!

From there, we travel to a field station in a beautiful Andean cloud forest where students will learn about biological field techniques. We participate in hands on field studies such as bird identification, and macrofauna populations counts for spectacled bears, pumas, and ocelots. Days 8-11: Papallacta Hot Springs, Mountain Bike Adventure, and Otavalo Next stop, Papallacta hot springs and a downhill mountain bike adventure! After a beginner/intermediate level mountain bike adventure surrounded by spectacular views, there is no better way to relax than a soak in the stream-fed hot springs with your fellow riders. A trip to Ecuador would be incomplete without a visit to the bustling city of Otavalo, host to the largest indigenous artisan marketplace in the world! Otavalo’s colorful artisan market is a shopper’s paradise and a wonderful opportunity to practice your Spanish and hone those bargaining skills. Days 12-19: Galapagos Archipelago From Quito, we fly to Guayaquil and then continue directly on to the Unesco World Heritage site of the Galapagos Islands. Our professionally guided journey through this unique landscape begins on the island of Santa Cruz. We will join our Galapagos guides, board our boats, and head to Isabela, the largest island of the archipelago, where our stay is highlighted by a trek along the Sierra Negra volcano, famous for its gigantic crater measuring 10.5 by 7 kilometers in size! This exciting adventure continues on to Santa Cruz where we can view nesting sea turtles and an array of fish while snorkeling the Concha Perla. We’ll be sure to visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center for an introduction to “Lonesome George”, the most famous of the giant tortoises we will see. Then we’re off to our third island paradise, San Cristobal. Time here is highlighted by snorkeling at the remains of an underwater volcano, better known as Kicker Rock. After wrapping up our action-packed and educational experience in Galapagos, we will depart back to Quito from San Cristobal. 2-Week Photography and Service Program

We learn and apply photography skills in the field while exploring the culture and life of Peru first hand though adventure, exchange, and community service activities. ITINERARY Days 1-6: Lima and Orientation in Urubamba We fly together into Lima, transfer to Cusco, and take a bus to Urubamba. The group stays together at a centrally located lodge while we get to know the locals through service projects and adventure activities. We gather each morning to learn photography tips and to capture the colorful scenes unfolding in the Sacred Valley. We collaborate with our host community and local schools on projects, including constructing playgrounds, building a community center, painting a school classroom, or working with local youth on educational activities. There will be photographic excursions to a nearby traditional indigenous community and colorful market places. Days 7-9: Machu Picchu and Cusco We arrive by train at the small scenic town of Aguas Calientes. Accompanied by a local guide, we rise early to behold the majestic lost city of the Incas. Nestled high in the mysterious Andes, Machu Picchu is a phenomenal and dramatic way to highlight this adventure of a lifetime! Back in Cusco, we lend our skills and provide photo journalism service work for a local nonprofit. Days 10-15: Puno and the Uros Islands The group departs by bus for the 8 hour journey to Puno and Lake Titicaca, where we board a boat to the floating islands of the Uros people. We have the opportunity to experience and photograph the unique pre-Incan settlers on the Uros who have constructed their own islands, homes and boats out of totora (dried Reeds). We spend one night with a family homestay on the beautiful Island of Taquile, inhabited by native Quechua people who have developed an efficient and original social system and technique of weaving. We fly from Juliaca back to Lima and connect for our flight home. It is the end of a trip, but a beginning to a new awareness about yourself and new cultures.

Days 1-3: Fajardo, Puerto Rico Participants will fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico and meet their leaders in the airport. After a quick overland transfer to Fajardo, we’ll begin with a welcome and familiarization of vessels, your home for the upcoming weeks! Living aboard a sailing yacht in a small group of 10 to 12 shipmates, you will experience the confidence of succeeding as both an individual and as a team. On the first three days you will learn terminology and basic sailing skills to get started while setting up our supplies for our voyage. Along with this introduction into sailing we will have two practice days in the Fajardo harbor and surrounding cays, Icacos Island and Palomino Island. Along with these practice sessions we will do some snorkeling on the surrounding cays and an excursion out into one of the most renowned bioluminescent bays in the world. Days 4-8: Vieques and Culebra Islands (The Spanish Virgin Islands) The first stop will be in Esperanza, on the south side of Vieques Island and located just 18 miles east of the main island of Puerto Rico. While docked in Vieques, we’ll spend a couple days of community service at local schools and youth groups at the Vieques Land Trust. On the second afternoon we will sail to Culebra Island where we’ll sleep one night in Ensenada Honda near the main town of Culebra. The next day work with some conservational youth groups and the University of Puerto Rico doing marine conservation work. We’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy some of the many water activities in the area such as fishing, snorkeling, and sea kayaking. The next day we will begin our sail to The USVI, St. Thomas and Coral Bay in St. John Island. DAYS 9-13: ST. THOMAS AND ST. JOHN ISLAND (THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS) Over the course of the next couple days we will work and play in St. John and The Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, 708 acres of federally owned submerged lands. The Virgin Islands National Park encompasses underwater areas that teem with marine life, gorgeous white sand beaches and acres of lush green forests. In St. John we will engage in conservation work with the park while exploring some of the most pristine bays in the the Caribbean. DAYS 14-17: RETURN INTO OLD SAN JUAN PORT We will make our return voyage home through St. Thomas and then Fajardo before sailing into the city of Old San Juan just as ships have done for centuries! On the last evening we’ll enjoy a final celebratory dinner and dancing in Old San Juan, providing time for final reflections and memories of this once in a lifetime journey!

We experience this culture to its fullest by sharing in the communal life of a small village that holds the deep belief that family and friends are the most important things in life. This program has been designed to bring together like-minded and adventurous students. It combines authentic cultural exchange, meaningful service and the opportunity to spend a week surfing in one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet. We will also immerse ourselves into the villages that exist without cars or stores and gain a deeper understanding of the simple Fijian way of life. Suitable for all levels from beginner to expert, our service and surf program will provide great adventure with new friends.

ITINERARY Days 1-3: Beach Lodge & Orientation Our experience begins on the Sunshine Coast at our beautiful beach ecoresort base, where students get to know one another and establish goals for the weeks ahead. Here we will learn more about Fiji and its traditions and customs. We will take time to rest, swim, explore the local markets, and prepare to immerse ourselves into true community living.

Days 4- 9: Coastal Village After our orientation, we travel to a coastal community where we will stay as a group. Fiji is paradise in the Pacific, complete with volcanic mountains, coral reefs, waterfalls, hiking trails, and single lane dirt roads that transport us back to a simpler time. On arrival in the village there will be a traditional “sevu sevu,” or welcoming ceremony, where we will share in drinking kava with the village chief and will be welcomed as part of the village for the duration of our stay. We eat together in a communal setting where our village family spoils us with inspired banquets of fruits, breads, and native dishes. Our projects will include construction of a village school facility and teaching English to the local kids. These are meaningful grassroots projects where we work side by side with the village families who will directly benefit from our efforts. The days follow relaxed “Fiji-time” and include projects, adventure activities, and introductions to traditional local customs, crafts, and games! Days 10- 15: Surf Camp & Beach Time Adventure. If you surf, you have already heard that Fiji has some of the finest and most consistent breaks on the planet. There are many great surf spots that can accommodate all levels of experience. We partner with a surf camp whose staff provides instruction and guidance. We have a full instructional program for those wanting to learn or hone their skills, and fun and experienced guides who bring local knowledge on the best spots and conditions. When we’re not surfing we will explore the surrounding area and work on a photographic and video diary of our adventures. Our final nights will be spent under the bright stars of the Southern Cross with new friends reflecting on an incredible fifteen days of fun service, fine surf and friendly people.

Enrollment Steps 1. Contact us to check availability and/or to reserve a space: We are available by phone (303.545.2202) or e-mail (info@ globalworkstravel.com) to answer questions and/or check program availability. Some of our programs fill by late January or early February, so we encourage parents and/ or participants to contact our office early in your decision-making process to determine the availability of any specific program(s). Inquiries are always welcome as our enrollment is on a rolling basis and occasional openings do become available in spring. 2. Submit an application and $800.00 deposit: Space is limited. To hold a space for more than a few days we require an application and deposit. We accept credit cards over the phone for the deposit, but we prefer that a check be mailed for the tuition balance, when due.

3. Enrollment: Once a completed application and deposit are received the participant will be contacted by email with login information where you can access all the enrollment forms on our website. The login page will also include program specific information, such as packing lists, immunization information, and your leader bios. 4. Enrollment Process: Once you receive your program login, complete the Travel Reservation Form as soon as possible to ensure flight arrangements. I also understand that locations, projects, and activities may be subject to change, and that itineraries may change. In all cases, Global Works will make a commercially reasonable effort to substitute an activity or location with something comparable.

Tuition Refunds and Trip Cancellation: The tuition includes: lodging, food, all transportation (not including airfare), all excursions, any activities and entrance fees specified on scheduled itinerary, full-time services of professional Global Works leaders, and all non-optional gratuities. The tuition does not include: passport and visa fees (non U.S. citizens must secure any necessary visas), airfare, baggage fees, airport departure taxes, excursions and activities not included on the itinerary, meals in airports or on travel days beginning or ending a trip, medical and evacuation insurance, or program interruption protection. Global Works’ refund policy is based on the fact that most program costs are determined on a per-group, instead of a per-person, basis. In addition, last minute cancellations often prevent other participants on the waiting list from participating. I understand that Global Works is not required to provide, and I am not entitled to, a tuition refund for late arrival, dismissal with cause, cancellation or early withdrawal for personal reasons or medical emergencies. Additionally, Global Works is not required to provide tuition refunds if participants fail to acquire passports, visas, immunizations, or airfare prior to a trip. Any refunds will be made at the sole discretion of Global Works. Global Works strongly recommends purchase of Program Cancellation and Interruption Plan, a tuition protection plan for medical conditions or family emergencies only. Additional trip cancellation insurance may be purchased through an outside trip cancellation insurance carrier. I understand that Global Works reserves the right to cancel a program that does not enroll to a minimum level and/or in cases where travel to a destination has been deemed unsafe. In such an occurrence, Global Works will make a commercially reasonable effort to offer a similar alternative program when available. If such comparable program is offered and refused by the enrolled, any paid tuition (not including the deposit) will be refunded. Global Works is not responsible for other costs, airfare, and incidental expenses incurred by a participant preparing for a trip that has been cancelled. Passports and Visas: I understand that it is each participant’s responsibility to obtain a valid passport and visa (if appropriate). We suggest that this process be completed well in advance of departure. Passports and visas (if appropriate) must be valid up to three months following the trip’s departure date. Non-U.S. citizens must contact the appropriate embassies and consulates to inquire about any visa requirements for all countries to be visited. Rules and Regulations: I understand that for the health, safety, and welfare of its staff and participants, Global Works requires that the rules and regulations it establishes be observed. I agree that should the participant’s conduct, at the sole discretion of Global Works, be deemed to be in violation of Global Works’ rules or otherwise detrimental to the maintenance of standards or to the successful operation it’s programs, Global Works may dismiss him/her from the program. I agree that Global Works responsibility for the participant ends with his/her dismissal or withdrawal from the program. I understand that in cases of early dismissal or withdrawal, accompaniment by a Global Works leader on the flight(s) home will not be possible, however at the request of a parent or guardian, Global Works will attempt to arrange for the participant to be treated as an unaccompanied minor by the airline when possible. I agree that should my child/ ward be dismissed from a Global Work’s program, I will make arrangements for, bear the cost of, and provide supervision and/or responsibility for my dismissed child/ward, even in situations that require extended international travel, and that no refund of the program tuition will be given for a dismissed participant. The following cases may be cause for early dismissal from the program: • Unsafe behavior, which includes, but is not limited to: failure to wear seat belts, life jackets, and other safety equipment, self mutilation, and/or body piercing. • Behavior that is destructive, abusive, violent, injurious to others or involves harassment, theft, vandalism, or chronic defiance of rules and regulations. • Exclusive relationships, sexual activity, unauthorized absence from the group, or failure to abide by curfews and/or other set expectations for behavior. • Possession or use of any weapons, non-prescribed drugs, tobacco products, narcotics, or alcoholic beverages. Personal Property Loss: I agree that Global Works will not be held responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of personal property or equipment. Petty theft is worldwide! Global Works strongly advises participants not to bring expensive cameras, electronic equipment, jewelry, sunglasses, etc. Personal insurance should be purchased to protect any valuable personal property. Health forms: Global Works’ Medical Information Form must be completely filled out and signed by a parent or guardian. The Physician Report and Examination must be completely filled out and signed by a physician who has examined the participant within one year prior to the start of the program. Acceptance into a Global Works program is contingent upon Global Works’ approval of the foregoing health forms. Failure to answer all questions accurately or the misrepresentation of the participant’s current or past physical and/or emotional condition may necessitate the dismissal of the participant, even after the program has commenced, at the parent’/ guardians’ expense. Misrepresentation, failure to fully disclose information or failure to update Global Works with new behavioral developments or other pertinent health form information prior to the program may result in dismissal or rescinding of acceptance (even before a program begins) without refund.

Medical Treatment: I understand that all participants must be covered by medical and emergency evacuation coverage in the destinations they travel with Global Works. In case of illness or injury, I grant permission to Global Works and/or its assigns, to hospitalize, treat and order injections, anesthesia or surgery for me or my participant son or daughter as may be appropriate. I further authorize Global Works to administer non-prescription medicine in the event of minor injuries and/or ailments to me or my participant son or daughter as may be appropriate. I understand and agree to pay all costs associated with medical care and transportation, including the cost of any evacuation, treatment, or medications. Photo/ Statement Release: I give permission to Global Works to use any photographs, videos, and writing of the participant and/or parent in Global Works promotional and/or educational publications and media. I agree to let Global Works list participants and parents, unless otherwise stated in writing, as a “Reference” in future Global Works promotional materials. Assumption of Risk, Release, and Indemnification Agreement: I understand and acknowledge that the Global Works program to which I and/or my participant son or daughter is applying, as may be appropriate, involves inherent risks that are beyond the control of Global Works. These risks include, but are not limited to: strikes, civil unrest, war, terrorist activity, weather, medical outbreaks, other possibly dangerous conditions beyond the control of Global Works, illness associated with an unfamiliar diet, risks of personal injury in motorized vehicles, participation in unauthorized and unsupervised activities while on the program, and the risk of personal injury involved in adventure activities or otherwise. I (participant) on behalf of myself, and I (parent/ guardian) on behalf of myself and my participant son or daughter, accept and fully assume these risks of travel. I (participant) on behalf of myself, and I (parent/guardian) on behalf of myself and my participant son or daughter, agree to release, waive, covenant not to sue, indemnify and hold harmless Global Works and its agents from and against any and all claims, liabilities, demands, damages, costs, attorneys’ fees, losses, expenses, rights and causes of action of any kind or nature arising out of any loss or damage to property or personal injury, including death or illness, incurred by me or my participant child while participating on a Global Works program. I further understand that Global Works subcontracts various transportation companies, travel agencies, and adventure outfitters, and with this understanding, I (participant) on behalf of myself, and I (parent/guardian) on behalf of myself and my participant son or daughter, agree to release, waive, covenant not to sue, indemnify and hold harmless Global Works and its agents from and against any and all claims, liabilities, demands, damages, losses, expenses, rights and causes of action of any kind or nature arising out of or caused by any act, error, omission, or default by any such subcontractor. Should it become necessary for Global Works to advance monies on behalf of a participant for any reason, I (participant) on behalf of myself, and I (parent/guardian) on behalf of myself and my participant son or daughter, agree to reimburse and indemnify Global Works for all such expenses. Any individual upon bringing legal action against Global Works will be responsible for all legal fees and costs, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, incurred by Global Works in the defense of such action. If one parent or guardian of a participant does not sign this Enrollment Agreement, the signing parent or guardian indemnifies Global Works and its agents from all claims by the non-signing parent or guardian. If any provisions of this Enrollment Agreement are held to be invalid, void or unenforceable, all other provisions of the Enrollment Agreement will nevertheless remain in full force and effect. Any and all actions arising out of or to enforce this Enrollment Agreement shall be heard in the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Boulder County, Colorado, United States. The construction, interpretation, performance and enforcement of this Enrollment Agreement shall be governed by the substantive law of the State of Colorado, U.S.A., notwithstanding its choice of law rules. This Enrollment Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties regarding the subject matter contained herein. This Enrollment Agreement supersedes all prior agreements, proposals, understandings, statements and/or representations, whether written or oral, concerning the subject matter contained herein. This Enrollment Agreement may not be altered, amended or extinguished except by a writing that expressly refers to this Enrollment Agreement and that is signed by all parties subsequent to the execution of this Enrollment Agreement. I believe that I or my participant son or daughter is capable of handling the physical and emotional experiences entailed in a Global Works program.
