AWARD & ACHIEVEMENT Hoekstra named Noon Rotary Club Student of the Month MASON CITY — Ben Hoekstra, a senior at Mason City High School, has been selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club “Student of the Month” for October. He is the son of Bill and Sherilyn Hoekstra. Hoekstra is an active member of the Mason City High School Instrumental and Vocal Music Department, as well as the speech team. In choir, Ben participates in select ensembles, Mohawk Follies, and the summer musicals; while in band he plays lead trombone in Jazz I, participates in Mohawk Power, and is a drill leader in marching band. He is a varsity letter winner in speech and a double letter Hoekstra winner in academics, choir, and band. His awards and accolades include: Two-time AllState vocalist, one-time All-State Speech qualifier, sixtime recipient of a Division I rating in choir, and threetime recipient of a Division I rating in band at State Solo and Small Ensemble Contest, Outstanding Choral Achievement Award, Iowa High School Music Association Academic Achievement Award and National Honors Society. Hoekstra attends Trinity Lutheran Church where he volunteers his time playing trombone at select services. Hoekstra plans to attend either Grinnell College or St. Olaf College next year to pursue a degree in history or political science, with the intention to pursue a law degree following his undergraduate work.
