Spring is nearly here, making it easy to imagine summer, where a warm breeze blows through the trees and the sun shines brightly in the sky. It’s a perfect time to gather outside and enjoy friends and family gatherings on your deck. Don’t have one? Here are some reasons a deck is an excellent addition to your home.

1 More entertaining space

A deck provides you with an entertainment space that adds more square footage to your house and gives you the benefit of enjoying everything the great outdoors has to o er. With additions like benches, canopies, fire pits, grills, outdoor ovens and outdoor furniture that looks like it would fit nicely in your living room, you can create a personalized space that is relaxing for both you and your guests.

2 Deck styles for every need No matter what your yard size or shape, there are multiple options for decks you can add to your home. You can choose a multilevel, detached, island or swimming pool deck for a larger yard. If your lot is smaller, you can choose from an attached, wrap-around or sideyard deck. Multiple options give you a chance to customize your deck to fit your space — and your needs.

3 Improves curb appeal According to the National Association of Realtors Research Group, millennials make up 37% of the market and are more interested in purchasing homes with decks than other generations. By appealing to this larger group of buyers, you might experience a faster sale when you put your home on the market.

Most gardeners have favorite go-to plants that perform well in their climate and simply make them happy. For me, those are coneflowers, catmint, Liatris, alliums, daylilies, black-eyed Susans and oh so many tomatoes. But every year, I manage to find at least a little space for something new that woos me from a garden-center shelf or the pages of a catalog.

Behind those customer-facing outlets, plant breeders work tirelessly to produce innovative plants with larger flowers; better disease resistance; improved cold, heat or shade tolerance; longer bloom times; and even higher nutrition.

Perennials

 The 2023 season brings us several firsts, including the firstever groundcover Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum “Carpet Angel,” from Green Fuse Botanicals. Named a 2023 All-America Selection by the independent, nonprofit organization of the same name, which tests new introductions and bestows the honors each year, the extremely cold-hardy plant starts blooming earlier than other varieties and keeps going straight through fall in zones 4a through 10b.

 Proven Winners has introduced two new native hummingbird mints in its Meant to Bee collection — “Royal Raspberry” and “Queen Nectarine” — which, as the group’s name implies, is beloved by bees. I grew the latter in my test garden last year and was impressed with the terracotta-colored flowers that blanketed most of the plant from midsummer through fall. Hardy in zones 5 through 9, the mounding perennial should reach 30 to 36 inches in two or three years.

Also from Proven Winners, I tested out the new Upscale “Red Velvet” bee balm, another native that lures pollinators to the garden. Suitable for part-sun to sun in zones 4 through 8, the tall Monarda variety emerges from dormancy with bronze-tinged foliage before large, cherry-red flowers take center stage in spring and summer. The deer-resistant plants grow to 32 inches tall.

 The breeder’s Rock’ N Round “Bright Idea” hybrid sedum stonecrop added a burst of yellow to my sunny test garden with its red stems, serrated green leaves and bright yellow, star-shaped blooms. The 10- to 12-inch salt-tolerant perennial attracts bees and butterflies, resists rabbit attacks and thrives in hot, dry spots in zones 3 through 9.

 PanAmerican Seed’s Echinacea “Artisan Yellow Ombre,” another AAS winner, is a bushy, multi-branched coneflower that produced bright yellow flowers in my test garden. Grow it in full sun in zones 4a through 10b, and watch as the pollinators come.

After the past few years of nonstop neutrals trending, in 2023 we’re anticipating a return of color in home decor, paint colors and bedding. With the return of color, we’re seeing that creating sumptuous, inviting spaces is top of mind for designers and homeowners alike. There’s a focus on creating restorative rooms, with a big trend toward creating luxurious bedrooms and reinventing modern takes on classic textiles.

Here are a few of our takes on the trends you’ll see popping up like crocuses this spring season.

Bold colors in living rooms

Introducing color to your living room can sometimes feel as daunting as it does dazzling. While many might first run to throw a new can of paint on the walls, you might instead look to your furniture. A colorful sofa (or chair or accent table) is an exciting way to liven up a living space.

In this bold and beautiful design, a fern green sofa pops against the warm neutral tones in the pillows and rug. Typically when introducing color, I carry the theme throughout the design. But in this case, this statement sofa is bold enough to act alone. This earthy color story is the perfect backdrop to the dash of blue found in the skirted swivel chairs, artwork and tabletop vignette. Because these colors are all muted in tone,

New plants

„ The breeder’s new Rudbeckia “Goldblitz” is a strong, 28-inch blackeyed Susan with shiny green leaves and abundant blooms. The sun-lover starts blooming about three weeks earlier than other varieties and continues into fall. It’s hardy in 3a through 9b.

„ Astilbe “Dark Side of the Moon,” a National Gardening Bureau Green Thumb Award winner, is a long-lived, shade-tolerant perennial that attracts bees and resists deer and rabbits. Foliage starts out yellow with a dark margin before turning a rich chocolate brown, and its raspberry-colored buds open to reveal pinkish-purple flowers. The plant is hardy in zones 4 through 9 and reaches 22 inches, including the tall flower spikes.

Annuals

„ The shade-tolerant, downy mildew-resistant “Glimmer” double impatiens from Ball Flora Plant are reminiscent of miniature roses and come in an array of colors, including Appleblossom, Bright Red, Burgundy, Dark Red, Hot Pink, Salmon and White. Plants grow to 10 to 16 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide.

„ The beautiful tropical “Royal Hawaiian Waikiki” Colocasia elephant ears, bred by University of Hawaii emeritus plant pathologist John J. Cho was honored with a National Gardening Bureau 2023 Green Thumb Award. Its large, glossy leaves, adorned with creamy white centers and pink veins, are held atop deep burgundy stems on compact plants sturdy enough to withstand wind and rain. Grow it as an annual in zones 7 and under.

„ Starflower “Paper Moon” Scabiosa, another Green Thumb Award winner, is a pollinator-friendly annual from Sahin/ Takii EU. Its 36-inch stems hold round clusters of pale blue, purple-veined flowers that give way to decorative, papery bronze seed heads, which can be used in fresh bouquets or dry arrangements. For best results, grow it in full sun.

they don’t feel overwhelming to the eye. It’s a perfect introduction to color without going over the top.

Keeping it New Traditional

Bringing traditional into modern day, New Traditional style emphasizes the comforts and conveniences of modern life while still maintaining the refined elegance of traditional design. New Traditional furniture tends to favor shapes and styles that have stood the test of time, but often in a more streamlined presentation and lighter or more practical fabrics (enter: my love of performance fabrics).

In this inviting New Traditional design, the color palette is refreshed with lighter shades of classic blues and creamy off-whites to keep the look familiar but updated.

I find the painted wicker coffee table to be so interesting. This piece gets points for creativity and versatility. The shape could range from preppy to eclectic, depending on the space. This fantastic piece carries classic lines, a hallmark of New Traditional, but the scalloped detailing adds a dash of whimsy.

A texture-rich space

It’s all about luxe spaces and touchable textures this season, though we’d argue that’s a hallmark of good design that’s never gone out of style.

In this look, the wooden texture of the spool chair and cocktail table add dimen-

sion to what could have been a textile-heavy space. If you’re feeling more daring in your design, contrast may actually act as your friend. It may seem counterintuitive, but going for high-contrast wood tones can actually work seamlessly. Playing with contrast adds visual interest and gives a design more depth while repeating shades gives the space a feeling of continuity. If your wood tones are all over the place, it can be helpful to create flow with your color palette. Pops of pinky-reds and blue are the anchor to this bold and refreshing living space.

Freshening up the tabletop

Black and white are a first-class combination. These colors have a classical appeal that adds instant sophistication, depth and character to any space. But what happens when we add a little green? When paired with black and white, green creates a wonderfully fresh, modern and energetic environment instantly.

This design is a flawless example. A blockprinted runner in lime is the perfect pair to the texture found in the hand-painted dishes found at each place setting. A pop of light green in the stack of dishes is enough to carry

the color through the space, but not enough to overwhelm the design. Carrying the lush verdant color throughout the tablescape is the addition of a fresh fern. The color palette is expertly finished off with natural wood tones, lending to the casual modernity of the space.

A delicate designer bed

Shining like a crown jewel, this month’s designer bed is created by our lovely designer, Anne. It features crisp neutrals with just a dash of color, which can be found in the Asian toile and tape trim.

Luxe bedroom living

While we prepare for spring as the weather remains chilly, we love to play up neutral plaids and pop them with an earthy yet rich mossy green. 4 Increase your home value

The National Association of Realtors’ 2021 Cost vs. Value Report states that a wood deck produces an average 65.8% return on investment. Composite decks produce an average return on investment of 63.2%.

Yes, composite is more pricey, but it requires less maintenance in the long run. The return on investment changes depending on deck size. Smaller decks see higher resale value and typically cost less to install. Remember, however, that a higher home value means increased taxes, so keep a close eye on your tax bill.

5 A satisfying DIY project

„ Snapdragon “Double Shot” Orange Bicolor, from Hems Genetics, has uniquely strong, branched stems that hold white-backed, double orange-red flowers that fade to a dusty hue as the season progresses. The All-America Selection winner grows to 18 to 20 inches tall in full or part sun.

Edibles

„ “Sun Dipper” tomato from PanAmerican Seed was named Best New Edible Plant of 2023 by the National Gardening Bureau. Its peanut-shaped, orange fruits, meant to make dipping easier, are perfectly suited for a crudite platter. I grew the indeterminate plant, bred to resist fusarium wilt, tobacco mosaic virus and root-knot nematodes, in my trial garden last summer. It was the only tomato that performed well during the year’s too-hot, too-dry season.

„ Another new tomato, “Vivacious,” available to grow from seed this year, is notable for its enhanced nutritional value.

Breeder W. Atlee Burpee claims the roughly 3-inchlong, plum-shaped, orange fruits are high in beta carotene, with just one tomato said to provide 40% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. Each plant promises to produce roughly 70 tomatoes throughout the season.

„ How about a seedless pepper? “Pepper Pots Sugar Kick” from Proven Winners is a miniature, sweet orange snacking pepper that grows seedless when isolated from other pepper varieties to prevent cross-pollination. The upright plants grow to 20 to 30 inches tall and are suitable for growing in both containers and the garden. Harvest green fruits in 54 days or orange ones in 74 days.

„ “Sweet Jade” squash, a single-serving-sized kabocha with sea-green skin and dark orange flesh, produces high yields and has a long storage life. The fruit of the All-America Selection winner, harvestable in fall, weighs just 1 to 2 pounds apiece.

If you have the carpentry skills and gumption, you can build your own deck. You’ll save between $15 and $35 per square foot by making this a DIY project, but remember to include room in your budget for materials, tools, staining and permits. (In most cases, a pro handles all this for you.) And you’ll have to follow the most up-to-date building codes in your area — something else a pro is normally qualified for already.

Lightning round:

Don’t forget the upkeep costs

On average, a deck costs $4,100 to $11,600. The biggest impacts on cost include materials used and deck size. Overall, expect to pay $30 to $60 per square foot for a deck.

Keep in mind, though, that decks require care to keep that space as functional, safe and beautiful as possible. Maintenance can vary depending on what your deck needs. Power washing costs $150 to $400 yearly, depending on deck size. Resealing costs $20 to $40 per gallon of sealant if you do it yourself. Whether it’s a small closet, large pantry or linen closet you want to keep tidy, organization is key to maximizing space and productivity. One philosophy that works: Everything should have a place, and be in place.

But what is the best way to achieve this sense of functionality and order? Here are some of our top organizational tips.

1. Keep items in clear containers or jars. Being able to see what you have is half the struggle to help prevent purchasing items you already own.

2. Practice the one in, one out rule.

3. Purge seasonally. Instead of the once-a-year cleanup, consider evaluating what to keep and what to toss more often.

4. Buy bins, baskets or containers to store small items.

5. Scan it! Gone are the days where boxes of documents or file cabinets full of paper are a necessity.

6. Just say no. Say no to items or inherited heirlooms you simply don’t have space or a need for that will sit in a closet or attic and collect dust.

7. Take new items out of boxes. Boxes are bulky and take up a lot of space.

8. Go slim. Huggable hangers and collapsible items can help maximize space.

9. Create cubbies or shelves to house items of various sizes.

Take these steps to make your outdoor spaces picture perfect

With spring in the air, it’s time to dust off your patio and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors again. Before you start planning the cookout, here’s what you need to do to get your outdoor spaces picture perfect.

Clean It

Wipe off winter’s gloom by sweeping off the patio and clearing it of debris and grime. Sweep off the surfaces and the furniture, then spray everything down with a cleaner appropriate to the surface. If you have a stone patio, pay

special attention to the grout. For wooden decks, make sure you remove any slippery moss or mold that may have accumulated.

If your furniture was stored for the winter, take off the covers and launder them according to the care tags. Wipe down your patio furniture and check if it needs any repairs or freshening — perhaps new cushions or throw pillows — for the season. Open umbrellas and look for holes, tears or other signs of wear. Make sure light fixtures work.

Plant It

Take out your old planters and clear out last year’s debris. If you’ve got perennials in, top them off with a fresh layer of soil and water them to get them growing again. If you’re planting annu-

als, add dirt as needed and put in your fresh pops of color. For flower beds, remove any leftover leaves and debris, then put down fresh soil and mulch as needed. Make sure to clean up the edges and replace broken or peeling edging.

Light It

Look over your patio lighting and make sure it’s in working order. Replace bulbs that need replacing. Consider adding more lighting for seating areas, conversation spots or to highlight new plants in the garden.

Paint It

If you’re tired of your patio furniture’s look or if winter left it a little shabby, whip out the spray paint and give it fresh life with a new coat of paint. Top it off with

Spring cleaning time is almost here. From getting behind heavy bookshelves to crawling under narrow tables, it’s a lot of hard work that can make a big impact on your living space. Here are a number of tips from cleaning experts on how you can make the most of your spring cleaning in 2023.

Fix air leaks

Poor insulation can send your home’s air and heat bills soaring. Take a moment to inspect every window pane and door for cracks and other openings. Most hardware stores sell epoxy solutions to fill cracks and gaps.

“As tempting as it may be, don’t skip out on a quick walk around your home to make sure there are no faulty cracks or openings within window panes and doors,” Leanne Stapf, of The Cleaning Authority, told The Spruce. “Any air leaks, no matter how small, could lead to a larger issue, resulting in poor insulation.”

Wash windows on a cloudy day

One of the most frustrating parts of cleaning glass is the streaks left behind. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Waiting for a cloudy day of overcast is an easy way to ensure that cleaning your windows goes smoothly.

Here’s a quick breakdown of some kitchen tile basics to help make the decision a little easier

Stone

If you are interested in giving your kitchen a more natural look and texture, stone tile may be perfect for your space. There are downsides, however

“It is a more expensive material, but the beauty and the individualism of natural stone speak volumes that justify the expense,” Westside Tile and Stone reported “They do require special care, but when you follow the recommended regiment,they will always look beautiful. Some choices in natural stone are: marble, limestone, travertine, slate, granite (and) quartz.”

For a lower maintenance stone kitchen floor, consider granite. For better textures and more color options, consider marble. But, there is a stone out there for almost every style and need.

Ceramic Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are great for two reasons: versatility and cost effectiveness If practicality best fits your kitchen’s purpose, ceramic is almost never a bad choice.

It’s an unfortunately unavoidable part of homeownership But drywall repair doesn’t have to be daunting Here’s how to easily fix your damaged drywall, according to the experts Assess the situation

The first step of drywall repair, according to HGTV, is to assess the damage If the drywall damage is limited to a few small nail holes, the damage can likely be remedied with some spackle (also called mud), a putty knife and a sanding block If the damage is more sizable, then the repair process is going to be a little more complex

For larger holes, the repair will require mesh tape to strengthen the spackle’s bond to the wall This strategy can be applied for long cracks and coin-sized holes

The edge of the patch should be directly over the stud so both the existing drywall and patch have support Continue cutting along the lines carefully with the utility knife, making several passes with each cut slightly deeper than the previous cut Remove the damaged piece of drywall ”

Once the damaged drywall has been removed, it’s time to install the support Cut a 1-by-3-inch piece of lumber and screw it with drywall screws vertically behind the wall opening you created Make sure the screw heads sink a little below the surface of the drywall

Use your damaged piece of drywall to trace and ultimately cut out a great fitting replacement piece from the healthy drywall you purchased previously Once the newly cut piece of drywall has been placed inside the open patch area of the wall secure it to the wall with drywall screws but ensure the screws are at least an inch from the edges of the new piece of drywall to avoid cracking

Sealing the patch

Once the new piece of drywall has been secured in place, run strips of fiberglass drywall mesh tape around the edges of the patch Spread spackle across the patch and tape until you have created a smooth flat surface Let the compound dry for as long as required by the manufacturer This process must then be repeated with a second coat of spackle

Once dried, wipe the patched area with a tack cloth and sanding cloth before painting over the repair

Curb appeal, the general attractiveness of a home’s visage, accounts for up to 7% of a house’s sales price, according to a 2020 report by The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. Luckily, making the most out of your home’s look is a relatively easy task.

Some curb appeal improvements are purely cosmetic, but most involve regular landscaping and maintenance.

According to HGTV, one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve a home’s curb appeal is to paint the front door. Exterior paint costs roughly $35 per gallon, which makes giving your front door a new coat of paint a relatively cheap opportunity. Choose a bold color for the front door, something that will make it stand out and draw attention to the home.

It might seem early to start thinking about your air conditioning unit, but late winter and early spring are the ideal times to be contacting your HVAC pro for an inspection and tuneup A twice-yearly HVAC inspection once in fall before heating starts, once in spring before you need the cooling can catch surprises before they become expensive ones. And regular attention from HVAC techs will add years to the lifespan of your unit

Your average AC inspection costs about $100, and if you have a regular service contract with an HVAC provider, it’s often included with your contract (Incidentally, getting a service contract with an HVAC provider is usually a good idea; it covers things like routine maintenance, and often gives you priority scheduling in an emergency ) During the inspection and tuneup, which should take about an afternoon, your tech will test all operating temperatures and pressure; inspect the coils, blower, drain line, and motor; verify that the proper refrigerant levels are set; and lubricate where needed (In most cases, they’ll take a look at the heating side as well, to see if any winter wearand-tear has led to a need for a repair )

While bright and bold colors work perfectly in fun spaces like children’s bedrooms and playrooms, they can also work seamlessly in living spaces In general, go for bright and bold when faced with spaces that may not get

much light or are overly dark, as these lively colors can serve as a welcomed energy boost.

When looking to incorporate bold, bright colors into your space, here are some Design Recipes do’s and don’ts

DO’S

Do use the colors you love in your space.

Do consider citrus colors such as orange,lemon and lime as these colors tend to be vibrant, happy and bright

Do mix negative space into your room such as leaving trims, baseboards and some wall areas white The negative space will help make your color pop Do consider using your vibrant color as an accent wall or highlight.

Do use bright colors in your accessories such as decorative items and artwork.

DON’TS

Don’t use too many colors in a space. Incorporating two to three
