Q: It seems like every holiday season someone loses their home to an electrical fire. What can we do to decorate safely for the holidays? A: There are many precautions you can take to keep your holiday safe. Make sure all lights and extension cords used outside are certified for outdoor use and plugged into an outlet with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Check your lights for loose connections and frayed wires and replace those that are worn out. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's guidelines on how many strings of lights can be connected together. Don't use metal staples or nails as fasteners for lights. Don’t run extension cords across sidewalks, and look up for overhead power lines anytime you are working with a ladder. If you have an artificial Christmas tree, make sure it is fire retardant; and if you have a real tree, water it daily to keep it from drying out. For more important holiday safety information call 1-800ALLIANT to request the free PowerHouse brochure, Holiday Decorating Safety.
