Brown, Fink CLINTON — Crystal Fink of Camanche, Iowa, and Shannon Brown of Comanche, Iowa, were married Oct. 5, 2013, in an outdoor wedding at the Riverfront Park in Clinton, Iowa, with Andy Elmore officiating. The bride’s parents are James and Jackie Fink of Hampton, Iowa. The groom’s parents are Karen and John Carstensen of Clinton, Iowa, and Kevin and Stephanie Brown of Clinton, Iowa. The bride’s grandparents are Jack Spoo of Barnett, Missouri, originally

from Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Dorthy Fink of Hampton, Iowa. The groom’s grandparents are Darline Hansen of Low Moor, Iowa, and John Brown of Clinton, Iowa. The bride wore a mermaid style bridal gown in ivory. It featured tulle overlay with three dimensional lace, a corset back and a semi cathedral train, from A Storybook Ending Bridals, in Dewitt, Iowa. AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS Exchange Club names Madeline Kim ‘Youth of the Month’ MASON CITY — The Exchange Club of Mason City named Madeline Kim “Youth of the month” for December. She is the daughter of Julie and Kwang Kim, and is a senior at Mason City High School. Kim carries a 4.0 grade point average, has been on the honor roll throughout high school, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Madeline has been a 4-year member of the cross

country team and served as a captain this past season. In addition, she plays the violin for the Mason City High School Orchestra and the North Iowa Symphony. She also has participated in the Student Senate, the Youth Action Team, Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention, the Mason City Chamber YIELD program, Mohawk Follies and the Mason City High School Choir and Chorale. Madeline enjoys playing her violin, reading and running. She plans to attend either Iowa State University or the University of Minnesota next year to pursue a degree in the medical field.

Local Volunteer featured for Community Volunteer Service MASON CITY — The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, also known as Volunteer Iowa, recently recognized Gary Pyle, as one of 50 Faces of Volunteerism in 2014, at www.volunteeriowa.org. Pyle is a volunteer with the Blue Zones Project in Mason City, and was nominated by Blue Zones Project community program manager, Angela Determan. Blue Zones project is a well-being initiative that helps making permanent environmental, social and policy changes that transition people into healthier behaviors

that can lead to longer, happier lives. Mason City became a Blue Zones Community in June of 2014. Pyle services on the Blue Zones Project Power 9 Committee that develops the blueprint to achieve improved well-being. He also serves as a liaison to the Engagement Committee. In addition to his work with the Blue Zones project, Pyle is active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and serves in various capacities with United Way and Una Vocis. He is director with Principal Financial in Mason City.

Awards & Achievements Stephen Henrich named finalist for Rhodes Scholarship MASON CITY — Stephen Henrich, of Mason City, was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship, one of the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world, according to a news release from Simpson College, Henrich’s alma mater. Although he wasn’t selected, being named a finalist is an honor, as only 32 young Americans are chosen as Rhodes Scholars each year. Henrich was a finalist from a pool of 877 candidates who had been nominated by their colleges and universities. Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly

achievements, but for their commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. Henrich is a second-year medical student and Ph.D candidate at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. He is a 2009 graduate of Newman Catholic High School, Mason City, and a 2013 graduate of Simpson College, Indianola, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry, mathematics and applied philosophy. He is the son of Ed and Laura Henrich, of Mason City.

Minnesota State University presents degrees during commencement exercises MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State University, Mankato presented 1,687 degrees during summer/fall commencement exercises Dec. 13, in Taylor Center on the Minnesota State Mankato campus. Students graduating summa cum laude had a grade point average of 3.8 or above, based on a 4.0 grade point average; students graduating magna cum laude had a grade point average of 3.5, and students graduating cum laude had a grade point average of 3.3.
