LifeServe Blood Center. This summer, high school and college students from across Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota competed to win a scholarship from LifeServe Blood Center by hosting
a Save our Summer Blood Drive. To qualify students had to host one blood drive during the summer months that brought in at least 50 units of blood. Danielson collected 54 units of blood in the blood drive he hosted.

TITONKA — Brian and Allie Janssen, of Titonka, Iowa, are the parents of a son, Oliver Lewis Janssen, born at 7:42 a.m. July 20, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City. He weighed 7 pounds, 0.2 ounces, and was 20 inches long. Grandparents are Mark and Beth Ebaugh of Clear Lake, and Leroy and Barb Janssen of Titonka. Greatgrandparents are Robert and Ann Borgman and Ray and Betty Ebaugh, all of Clear Lake.
Herbert Alexander and Darlene (Hagen) Alexander of Mason City, Iowa, were married Sept. 30, 1949, in Northfield, Minnesota, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple will celebrate their 65th anniversary. Their children are Doug (Jean) Alexander, Deer, Arkansas; Deborah (John) Walters, Culbertson, Nebraska; and David Alexander, Davenport, Iowa. AWARD & ACHIEVEMENT Lowell Milken Discovery Award Winners NASHUA — Three Nashua-Plainfield High School students, Jordan Swaney, Noah Swaney and Caleb Geer, placed second in the Lowell Milken Foundation for Unsung Heroes Discovery Award competition, and will receive a $2,000 award. The students were recognized for their documentary on Jane Elliott, a Riceville, Iowa, school teacher whose classroom exercise directly confronted the racist attitudes among her students and drew national acclaim after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The Nashua-Plainfield students originally created their documentary for the National History Day contest, where they received an award for the Outstanding Iowa Project Entry and qualified for the national contest in College Park, Maryland. The Milken Foundation award is not part of the National History Day program but rather seeks to honor projects promoting Unsung Heroes in history.
