Little named ‘Student of the Month’ MASON CITY — Matthew Little, a senior at Mason City High School, has been selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” Little for April. He is the son of David and Laura Little. Little is a member of the Mason City High School Speech Team and Drama Club, the Concert Choir, the Science Quiz
Bowl Team and Boy Scout Troop 14. He is a 2010 National Merit Scholar. In his spare time, he enjoys reading classical literature. Little attends First Presbyterian Church, where he served as the youth elder on the Session last year. He has gone on mission trips with his church every year, and also helps build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Little plans to attend Iowa State University next year, and study physics and philosophy.

MCARSPA merit award MASON CITY — The Mason City Area Retired School Personnel Association has awarded its annual $250 Merit Award to Amy Rosenbaum, a student at Central Springs High School. The award is given to the applicant chosen by the MCARSPA committee. It is focused on the student’s desire to continue working toward a degree in education. MCARSPA is an area unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, which is affiliated with the National Retired Teachers Association. Any retired school personnel in this area is eligible to join. Units develop projects for their volunteers to contribute to community needs with the focus on education. College of Law Merit Scholar IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa College of Law selected Nathan Peterson as a Merit Scholar, based on his outstanding academic record and Law School Admission Test score, which was in the 98th percentile. Peterson, the son of Brian and Noella Peterson, of Lake Mills, will be entering the U of I College of Law this fall. The scholarship is worth more than $60,000, which is full
tuition for six semesters of study. Peterson is a 2004 graduate of Forest City High School and a 2008 graduate of Iowa State University, with bachelor of arts degrees in philosophy and English.

John Deere Signature Award AMES — The Iowa State National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) chapter was presented the John Deere Signature Award at the association’s annual conference and trade show April 22-24 in Kansas City. Team members include Laura Larson, of Nora Springs, and Ryan Hrubes, Garner. The chapter won the award for overall points accrued for student participation, involvement in the national competition, scholarship awards and its annual report. The team received a $3,000 check with the award that will be used for future chapter activities. The chapter participated in NAMA’s annual marketing competition advancing to the final rounds and placing fourth out of 31 teams. To compete, students developed a business plan and professional presentation to market a new product or service. This year the team marketed MyMato, a cherry tomato plant that can be grown indoors. A panel of marketing and agribusiness professionals judged the team.

Hegtvedt named ‘Student of Month’ MASON CITY — Katlyn Hegtvedt, a senior at Mason City High School, has been selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” for April. She is the daughter Hegtvedt of Dan and Laurie Hegtvedt. During her four years at Mason City High School, Hegtvedt has participated in basketball, track, volleyball and softball and is a varsity letter winner in basketball and track. She is on the Principal’s List Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, a member of the National Honor Society, received Outstanding Academic achievement awards and All-Academic Awards and was student of the month for Home Economics, twice. Hegtvedt’s community activities include being a student mentor for the Parks and Recreation Program for two years, and performing for the Studio of Performing Arts Theater. She is a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Hegtvedt plans to attend North Iowa Area Community College to pursue a four-year degree in nursing.
Register’s Academic All State Team DES MOINES — Five North Iowa high school seniors are among students honored in the Des Moines Register’s 2010 Iowa Academic All-State Team recognition program. The following students were named to one of five
regional Academic AllState Teams announced May 2, in the Des Moines Sunday Register: Katrina Even, of Bishop-Garrigan High School, Algona; Karina Haas, of Algona High School; Kaitlyn Dornbier, Newman Catholic, Mason City; John Harringa, Central Springs High School, Manly, and Sean Michaelson, of Charles City High School. Each high school in Iowa was asked to select a senior who is among the best and the brightest, with a mixture of good grades, test scores, activities and accomplishments that made them stand out among their peers. Register editors selected and wrote stories about three students from each region, and selected 50 other students (10 from each region)
to highlight in the section. The Des Moines Sunday Register published the names of all students who were nominated by their school for the honor. Truman State Honor Awards KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Lindsey Adams, of Garner, Iowa, was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Communication-Communication Studies during the 2010 Academic Honor Awards Assembly at Truman State University in Kirksville, May 7. Adams is a senior majoring in communication studies. She is the daughter of Brenda Adams and the late Doug Adams, and is a 2006 graduate of GarnerHayfield High School.

AMES — Mindy (Boyle) Heinz received a master of science degree in human development and family studies, with a minor in gerontology, during commencement ceremonies May 7, at Iowa State University, Ames. She graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. Mindy is a graduate of Newman Catholic High School and received her undergraduate degree at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She will continue her studies this fall, in the doctorate program at ISU. Mindy is the daughter of Mark and Rosann Boyle, Mason City. She and her husband, Joel, live in Ames.
Carmeen Barr and Alan Barr. Barr currently attends Mason City Alternative High School. He is very active in school activities, including Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development (YIELD), Youth Task Force, FOR and SSIAC. He also assisted with student team management and the Mason City Alternative School yearbook. He was recognized as Student of the Year for 2008-09 and Student of the Third Quarter for 2009-10.
