FOREST CITY – With 50 athletes at spring workouts, Forest City boys track coach Ken Kasper doesn’t have to look very far to see potential. He’ll start with 17 returning letter winners and go from there. The Indians finished as co-champions in the North Iowa Conference last year and were runnerup in the district track meet to Osage. “With a strong senior group we look forward to getting better and competing in each meet throughout the season,” said Kasper, who is in his fifth season. “Our kids are real competitive. For some that means competing in meets and others are to improve themselves in different ways.” Leading the veteran Indian athletes are seniors, Riley Moore, Jake Staudt, Andrew Mettry, Grant Lehmann, Nick Bunger, Collin Hertzer,

BRITT – With two seniors and nine returning letter winners, West Hancock High School boys track coach Bob Sanger thinks he has a foundation for a good track team. “We’re going to struggle a little,” he said. “But we have decent numbers and I think we’re going to be a better track team at the end of the year.” The team has two seniors, hurdler Jacob Hejlik and sprinter Hunter Hiscocks. The Eagles have 12 juniors, two sophomores and 12 freshmen on this year’s team. “The hard part is that we really don’t know where we’re at right now with some of our younger kids,” Sanger said. “Until we can get outside and on the track it’s hard to see how we’re going to be in some events.” Hejlik and sophomore Sam Smith were members of last year’s state qualifying shuttle hurdle relay team. Junior Joey DeHart, is
also a veteran. DeHart was a member of last year’s state qualifying medley relay team. Another junior showing early-season promise is Jordan Savoy, who Sanger said will run 400 and 800 meter events. “I think we should have decent relay teams with the number of quarter and half mile runners that we have,” Sanger said. Other Eagle athletes working out this spring include juniors: Ashten Aericko, Logan Brown, Allen Chizek, Zack Johnson, Carlos Landeros, Allen Schleuger, Sean Schmid, Logan Weiland, Keaton Yeakel, Quinn Yeakel and sophomore Connor Sonius. Freshman track athletes include Clayton Brown, Bryce Buren, Dylan Eckels, Ben Eisenman, Nick Hunt, Josh Kreitlow, Nate Lemmon, Donovan Lyons, Nick Myers, Glen Smith, Connor Tvedt and Jordan Weiland. West Hancock will be the host site for three boys meets this year, including the North Iowa Conference Meet on May 12.

FOREST CITY – State qualifying sprinters, hurdlers and a shot putter are all part of the Forest City Indian roster this spring as the 2014 track season starts. “We lost a lot of seniors,” said Indian coach Scott Jackson, “But we have good numbers and some good quality people coming back.” In all Jackson has seven athletes coming back that competed in last year’s season-ending state track meet. The roster starts with senior shot putter and discus thrower Ali Peterson, senior hurdler Molly Lewison has been to state as have Junior Rachel Koch who competed in both sprint and hurdle relays at state – while junior classmate Morgan Kingston competed in a sprint relay. The team’s credentials don’t stop there either. The sophomore class has three runners that have felt the surface of the State

West Hancock girls look to continue streak BOB LINK

BRITT — For the past three years the West Hancock Eagle girls track team has been a force to be reckoned, winning the district track meet three straight years while placing second at the Iowa 1A state track meet the past two years. Last year, the Eagle girls won every regular season meet they attended with the exception of one – the Mason City Mohawk Invitational, where they finished third in a field filled with larger schools. The 2014 team doesn’t have some of the familiar faces it’s looked to for leadership in the past several years, but coach Mark Sanger says his squad will again be solid. “We had five seniors who really led the way for us last year,” said the fifthyear coach. “But we also have some good experience coming back. If we can get some of our young athletes to step it up, we will have a solid team.” The Eagles return 14
letter winners. Seniors on this year’s squad are: Kelly Anderson, Kiersten Brazzel, Taylor Glawe, Chloe Nielsen and Maribel Zamago. Juniors back this year are Mallory Becker, Nicole Burgardt, Whitney Burgardt, Macey Harms, Jessica Ohrt and Elizabeth Zamago. Sophomore letter winners include Emma Chizek, Hannah Hejlik, Maria Gonzales and Monica Loeschen. Maribel Zamago, Whitney Burgardt, Glawe and Gonzalez all competed in last year’s state track meet. In addition to the strong veteran lineup, Sanger has a long list of new candidates, including Krista Kruger, Miriam GarciaLopez, Emily Leerar, Arely Romero, April Robbins, Kaitlyn Brazzel, Anna Chizek, Madison Daniels, Faith Hammer, Kaylee Hudspeth and Natalie Wood. “Our start of the year goals are always similar to the prior year,” Sanger said. “We look at being competitive in every meet. West Hancock golf team starting new BOB LINK

BRITT – With a new head coach and one veteran on each the boys and girls teams, the West Hancock High School golf program is starting anew. “We’re young and in a rebuilding phase,” said Troy Hobscheidt, the first-year head coach of the Eagles boys and girls team. “We’d like to see some more numbers. We’ll work with the kids that are out and keep the focus on improving.” Taylor Beachy is a three-year letter winner and leads the team’s experience. Joining her on the girls’ team is Micheala Andreasen. Colton Ruter is the only returning player from last year’s boys team. Other boys on the team include Johnathan Hernandez, Alex Hartwig, Jordan Savoy and Logan Jones. Hobscheidt said the teams have a lot to learn because it’s young and inexperienced. “I’m learning, they’re learning, we can grow together,” Hobscheidt said. “Our main goal will be to learn the basics, the rules of golf and it will be important for us to just get out and play a lot of rounds.” Derek Cornet is the assistant BOB LINK, 2014 Spring Sports coach. The girl’s team includes seniors Nicole Skjeie and Rachel Steiff, both veteran players who have played varsity all three years in high school, according to Pauley. “Nicole has just missed making all conference the past two years and it is her goal to make it this year,” said Pauley. “She wants to be all conference.” Freshman golfers include Payton Skjeie, Sevanah Thomas and Sydney Olson. Pauley said the key for the younger players is to learn the game and play rounds. Bear Creek Golf Course will be the host of seven tournaments this year as Forest City, along with neighboring schools will hold events at the golf facility. The North Iowa Conference Tournament is scheduled for May 12.
WHGIRLS From C5 As we put the work in during the year, the common goal that we pursue is the conference title.” Sanger said that although the team won’t have the same makeup as last year but the team goals are similar. Our goals for this year will remain high. We are looking at competing for both a conference and district title again this year.” But, the coach said, it’s a meet-by-meet-process in order to achieve the conference and district goals. “We look to improve at each meet we compete and will put together a competitive meet at conference and districts,” Sanger said. “If we can do these things I think we can set ourselves up to be competitive at the state meet once again.”
FCGIRLS From C4 and eight juniors. The sophomore class is strong on numbers with 14, which includes the three athletes that ran at state. Jackson’s team also has seven freshmen. One other Forest City trivia note; the team’s 4x400 relay team has qualified for state the past five years. Sprinters and Jackson say they’re eager to keep the string alive at six. Fearing the worst of spring weather Athletes were not enjoying the cold weather last week as early season conditioning for spring sports was underway. With snow flying and cold winds howling, North Iowa track and golf coaches were finding indoor alternatives to training for what is meant to be outdoor sports. In Britt, West Hancock High School coaches had athletes strap into shoulder Bob Link harnesses Sports Link and pull teammates up and down the gym, working on leg strength. Forest City High School girls were making long runs up and down hallways, then moved to the gym for some sprint work. The Indian boys track distance runners were bundling up as wind chills in single digits greeted them outside. Coach Ken Kasper stressed the importance of stretching thoroughly before and after running. Coaches are starting to fear that they are now looking at the same kind of situation as last year when wet spring weather prevented teams from being outside and actually competing. While we’ve had 40-, 50- and 60-degree temperatures, warm days have been followed by long periods of freezing temperatures – not at all conducive to track or golf. “We only got in five meets (out of 10 on the schedule) before our state qualifying events last year,” said West Hancock High School girls track coach Mark Sanger. “We were

But it wasn’t the kind of season that you want for your team.” As with anything, nothing beats actual performances and head-to-head competition. Golf coaches at both Forest City and West Hancock had their athletes putting on carpet greens, while they used longer clubs to practice drives and
their short game by hitting plastic golf balls into nets. “You can only have them hit balls off the mats and reading about golf etiquette for so long,” said Forest City High School girls golf coach Tom Pauley. “It gets real boring real fast.” Not only is it boring for athletes, there’s a safety factor that coaches keep a close eye on. Athletes need space and the right surface to run, they need to go
full speed, which isn’t an option inside the walls of a gymnasium. Speaking of safety. When I was in high school, a long time ago, an indoor workout I was involved with ended the season for a high jumper on our team. The bar was set up over a fluffy pit in the corner of our gym and the jumpers were doing their thing when suddenly there was a commotion. It got real noisy as the bar rattled off
the standard, hitting the floor and people started hollering for coaches. One of our high jumpers miscued, missed the mat on his landing and broke his arm in much the same fashion that Joe Theisman snapped his leg on Monday Night Football. It wasn’t pretty and needless to say, the high jumper’s season ended before it really began. So if you think you’re tired of winter and ready
for some nice spring weather, put yourself in the shoes of local athletes and coaches – it can’t happen soon enough. There’s a good lineup of local track meets and golf tournaments which will feature the local athletes – check the schedule today and plan on attending one in your community.
