Home & Garden: Spring Home Improvement

Page 3

BRIGITTA SHANNON ROSE | Ask Angi

Spring is nearly here, making it easy to imagine summer, where a warm breeze blows through the trees and the sun shines brightly in the sky. It’s a perfect time to gather outside and enjoy friends and family gatherings on your deck. Don’t have one? Here are some reasons a deck is an excellent addition to your home.

1 More entertaining space

A deck provides you with an entertainment space that adds more square footage to your house and gives you the benefit of enjoying everything the great outdoors has to o er. With additions like benches, canopies, fire pits, grills, outdoor ovens and outdoor furniture that looks like it would fit nicely in your living room, you can create a personalized space that is relaxing for both you and your guests.

2 Deck styles for every need No matter what your yard size or shape, there are multiple options for decks you can add to your home. You can choose a multilevel, detached, island or swimming pool deck for a larger yard. If your lot is smaller, you can choose from an attached, wrap-around or sideyard deck. Multiple options give you a chance to customize your deck to fit your space — and your needs.

3 Improves curb appeal According to the National Association of Realtors Research Group, millennials make up 37% of the market and are more interested in purchasing homes with decks than other generations. By appealing to this larger group of buyers, you might experience a faster sale when you put your home on the market.

Most gardeners have favorite go-to plants that perform well in their climate and simply make them happy. For me, those are coneflowers, catmint, Liatris, alliums, daylilies, black-eyed Susans and oh so many tomatoes. But every year, I manage to find at least a little space for something new that woos me from a garden-center shelf or the pages of a catalog.

Behind those customer-facing outlets, plant breeders work tirelessly to produce innovative plants with larger flowers; better disease resistance; improved cold, heat or shade tolerance; longer bloom times; and even higher nutrition.

Perennials

 The 2023 season brings us several firsts, including the firstever groundcover Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum “Carpet Angel,” from Green Fuse Botanicals. Named a 2023 All-America Selection by the independent, nonprofit organization of the same name, which tests new introductions and bestows the honors each year, the extremely cold-hardy plant starts blooming earlier than other varieties and keeps going straight through fall in zones 4a through 10b.

 Proven Winners has introduced two new native hummingbird mints in its Meant to Bee collection — “Royal Raspberry” and “Queen Nectarine” — which, as the group’s name implies, is beloved by bees. I grew the latter in my test garden last year and was impressed with the terracotta-colored flowers that blanketed most of the plant from midsummer through fall. Hardy in zones 5 through 9, the mounding perennial should reach 30 to 36 inches in two or three years.

Also from Proven Winners, I tested out the new Upscale “Red Velvet” bee balm, another native that lures pollinators to the garden. Suitable for part-sun to sun in zones 4 through 8, the tall Monarda variety emerges from dormancy with bronze-tinged foliage before large, cherry-red flowers take center stage in spring and summer. The deer-resistant plants grow to 32 inches tall.

 The breeder’s Rock’ N Round “Bright Idea” hybrid sedum stonecrop added a burst of yellow to my sunny test garden with its red stems, serrated green leaves and bright yellow, star-shaped blooms. The 10- to 12-inch salt-tolerant perennial attracts bees and butterflies, resists rabbit attacks and thrives in hot, dry spots in zones 3 through 9.

 PanAmerican Seed’s Echinacea “Artisan Yellow Ombre,” another AAS winner, is a bushy, multi-branched coneflower that produced bright yellow flowers in my test garden. Grow it in full sun in zones 4a through 10b, and watch as the pollinators come.

2023 TRENDS

KATIE LAUGHRIDGE

Tribune News Service

After the past few years of nonstop neutrals trending, in 2023 we’re anticipating a return of color in home decor, paint colors and bedding. With the return of color, we’re seeing that creating sumptuous, inviting spaces is top of mind for designers and homeowners alike. There’s a focus on creating restorative rooms, with a big trend toward creating luxurious bedrooms and reinventing modern takes on classic textiles.

Here are a few of our takes on the trends you’ll see popping up like crocuses this spring season.

Bold colors in living rooms

Introducing color to your living room can sometimes feel as daunting as it does dazzling. While many might first run to throw a new can of paint on the walls, you might instead look to your furniture. A colorful sofa (or chair or accent table) is an exciting way to liven up a living space.

In this bold and beautiful design, a fern green sofa pops against the warm neutral tones in the pillows and rug. Typically when introducing color, I carry the theme throughout the design. But in this case, this statement sofa is bold enough to act alone. This earthy color story is the perfect backdrop to the dash of blue found in the skirted swivel chairs, artwork and tabletop vignette. Because these colors are all muted in tone,

New plants

„ The breeder’s new Rudbeckia “Goldblitz” is a strong, 28-inch blackeyed Susan with shiny green leaves and abundant blooms. The sun-lover starts blooming about three weeks earlier than other varieties and continues into fall. It’s hardy in 3a through 9b.

„ Astilbe “Dark Side of the Moon,” a National Gardening Bureau Green Thumb Award winner, is a long-lived, shade-tolerant perennial that attracts bees and resists deer and rabbits. Foliage starts out yellow with a dark margin before turning a rich chocolate brown, and its raspberry-colored buds open to reveal pinkish-purple flowers. The plant is hardy in zones 4 through 9 and reaches 22 inches, including the tall flower spikes.

Annuals

„ The shade-tolerant, downy mildew-resistant “Glimmer” double impatiens from Ball Flora Plant are reminiscent of miniature roses and come in an array of colors, including Appleblossom, Bright Red, Burgundy, Dark Red, Hot Pink, Salmon and White. Plants grow to 10 to 16 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide.

„ The beautiful tropical “Royal Hawaiian Waikiki” Colocasia elephant ears, bred by University of Hawaii emeritus plant pathologist John J. Cho was honored with a National Gardening Bureau 2023 Green Thumb Award. Its large, glossy leaves, adorned with creamy white centers and pink veins, are held atop deep burgundy stems on compact plants sturdy enough to withstand wind and rain. Grow it as an annual in zones 7 and under.

„ Starflower “Paper Moon” Scabiosa, another Green Thumb Award winner, is a pollinator-friendly annual from Sahin/ Takii EU. Its 36-inch stems hold round clusters of pale blue, purple-veined flowers that give way to decorative, papery bronze seed heads, which can be used in fresh bouquets or dry arrangements. For best results, grow it in full sun.

they don’t feel overwhelming to the eye. It’s a perfect introduction to color without going over the top.

Keeping it New Traditional

Bringing traditional into modern day, New Traditional style emphasizes the comforts and conveniences of modern life while still maintaining the refined elegance of traditional design. New Traditional furniture tends to favor shapes and styles that have stood the test of time, but often in a more streamlined presentation and lighter or more practical fabrics (enter: my love of performance fabrics).

In this inviting New Traditional design, the color palette is refreshed with lighter shades of classic blues and creamy off-whites to keep the look familiar but updated.

I find the painted wicker coffee table to be so interesting. This piece gets points for creativity and versatility. The shape could range from preppy to eclectic, depending on the space. This fantastic piece carries classic lines, a hallmark of New Traditional, but the scalloped detailing adds a dash of whimsy.

A texture-rich space

It’s all about luxe spaces and touchable textures this season, though we’d argue that’s a hallmark of good design that’s never gone out of style.

In this look, the wooden texture of the spool chair and cocktail table add dimen-

sion to what could have been a textile-heavy space. If you’re feeling more daring in your design, contrast may actually act as your friend. It may seem counterintuitive, but going for high-contrast wood tones can actually work seamlessly. Playing with contrast adds visual interest and gives a design more depth while repeating shades gives the space a feeling of continuity. If your wood tones are all over the place, it can be helpful to create flow with your color palette. Pops of pinky-reds and blue are the anchor to this bold and refreshing living space.

Freshening up the tabletop

Black and white are a first-class combination. These colors have a classical appeal that adds instant sophistication, depth and character to any space. But what happens when we add a little green? When paired with black and white, green creates a wonderfully fresh, modern and energetic environment instantly.

This design is a flawless example. A blockprinted runner in lime is the perfect pair to the texture found in the hand-painted dishes found at each place setting. A pop of light green in the stack of dishes is enough to carry

the color through the space, but not enough to overwhelm the design. Carrying the lush verdant color throughout the tablescape is the addition of a fresh fern. The color palette is expertly finished off with natural wood tones, lending to the casual modernity of the space.

A delicate designer bed

Shining like a crown jewel, this month’s designer bed is created by our lovely designer, Anne. It features crisp neutrals with just a dash of color, which can be found in the Asian toile and tape trim.

Luxe bedroom living

While we prepare for spring as the weather remains chilly, we love to play up neutral plaids and pop them with an earthy yet rich mossy green. A dash of cow hide (a printed fabric, not the real deal) adds a touch of whimsy in this otherwise sophisticated look. (adapted from nellhills.com. Deck From C1

4 Increase your home value

The National Association of Realtors’ 2021 Cost vs. Value Report states that a wood deck produces an average 65.8% return on investment. Composite decks produce an average return on investment of 63.2%.

Yes, composite is more pricey, but it requires less maintenance in the long run. The return on investment changes depending on deck size. Smaller decks see higher resale value and typically cost less to install. Remember, however, that a higher home value means increased taxes, so keep a close eye on your tax bill.

5 A satisfying DIY project

„ Snapdragon “Double Shot” Orange Bicolor, from Hems Genetics, has uniquely strong, branched stems that hold white-backed, double orange-red flowers that fade to a dusty hue as the season progresses. The All-America Selection winner grows to 18 to 20 inches tall in full or part sun.

Edibles

„ “Sun Dipper” tomato from PanAmerican Seed was named Best New Edible Plant of 2023 by the National Gardening Bureau. Its peanut-shaped, orange fruits, meant to make dipping easier, are perfectly suited for a crudite platter. I grew the indeterminate plant, bred to resist fusarium wilt, tobacco mosaic virus and root-knot nematodes, in my trial garden last summer. It was the only tomato that performed well during the year’s too-hot, too-dry season.

„ Another new tomato, “Vivacious,” available to grow from seed this year, is notable for its enhanced nutritional value.

Breeder W. Atlee Burpee claims the roughly 3-inchlong, plum-shaped, orange fruits are high in beta carotene, with just one tomato said to provide 40% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. Each plant promises to produce roughly 70 tomatoes throughout the season.

„ How about a seedless pepper? “Pepper Pots Sugar Kick” from Proven Winners is a miniature, sweet orange snacking pepper that grows seedless when isolated from other pepper varieties to prevent cross-pollination. The upright plants grow to 20 to 30 inches tall and are suitable for growing in both containers and the garden. Harvest green fruits in 54 days or orange ones in 74 days.

„ “Sweet Jade” squash, a single-serving-sized kabocha with sea-green skin and dark orange flesh, produces high yields and has a long storage life. The fruit of the All-America Selection winner, harvestable in fall, weighs just 1 to 2 pounds apiece.

If you have the carpentry skills and gumption, you can build your own deck. You’ll save between $15 and $35 per square foot by making this a DIY project, but remember to include room in your budget for materials, tools, staining and permits. (In most cases, a pro handles all this for you.) And you’ll have to follow the most up-to-date building codes in your area — something else a pro is normally qualified for already.

Lightning round:

Don’t forget the upkeep costs

On average, a deck costs $4,100 to $11,600. The biggest impacts on cost include materials used and deck size. Overall, expect to pay $30 to $60 per square foot for a deck.

Keep in mind, though, that decks require care to keep that space as functional, safe and beautiful as possible. Maintenance can vary depending on what your deck needs. Power washing costs $150 to $400 yearly, depending on deck size. Resealing costs $20 to $40 per gallon of sealant if you do it yourself. Tweet your home-care questions with #askingangi, and we’ll try to answer them in a future column.

Whether it’s a small closet, large pantry or linen closet you want to keep tidy, organization is key to maximizing space and productivity. One philosophy that works: Everything should have a place, and be in place.

But what is the best way to achieve this sense of functionality and order? Here are some of our top organizational tips.

1. Keep items in clear containers or jars. Being able to see what you have is half the struggle to help prevent purchasing items you already own.

2. Practice the one in, one out rule.

3. Purge seasonally. Instead of the once-a-year cleanup, consider evaluating what to keep and what to toss more often.

4. Buy bins, baskets or containers to store small items.

5. Scan it! Gone are the days where boxes of documents or file cabinets full of paper are a necessity.

6. Just say no. Say no to items or inherited heirlooms you simply don’t have space or a need for that will sit in a closet or attic and collect dust.

7. Take new items out of boxes. Boxes are bulky and take up a lot of space.

8. Go slim. Huggable hangers and collapsible items can help maximize space.

9. Create cubbies or shelves to house items of various sizes.

10. Consider built-ins (be thoughtful and purposeful). Get Your Patio Ready

Take these steps to make your outdoor spaces picture perfect

GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

With spring in the air, it’s time to dust off your patio and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors again. Before you start planning the cookout, here’s what you need to do to get your outdoor spaces picture perfect.

Clean It

Wipe off winter’s gloom by sweeping off the patio and clearing it of debris and grime. Sweep off the surfaces and the furniture, then spray everything down with a cleaner appropriate to the surface. If you have a stone patio, pay

special attention to the grout. For wooden decks, make sure you remove any slippery moss or mold that may have accumulated.

If your furniture was stored for the winter, take off the covers and launder them according to the care tags. Wipe down your patio furniture and check if it needs any repairs or freshening — perhaps new cushions or throw pillows — for the season. Open umbrellas and look for holes, tears or other signs of wear. Make sure light fixtures work.

Plant It

Take out your old planters and clear out last year’s debris. If you’ve got perennials in, top them off with a fresh layer of soil and water them to get them growing again. If you’re planting annu-

als, add dirt as needed and put in your fresh pops of color. For flower beds, remove any leftover leaves and debris, then put down fresh soil and mulch as needed. Make sure to clean up the edges and replace broken or peeling edging.

Light It

Look over your patio lighting and make sure it’s in working order. Replace bulbs that need replacing. Consider adding more lighting for seating areas, conversation spots or to highlight new plants in the garden.

Paint It

If you’re tired of your patio furniture’s look or if winter left it a little shabby, whip out the spray paint and give it fresh life with a new coat of paint. Top it off with

weatherproof throw pillows and cushions to make your outdoor space sing. Lastly, look over your space and see if you can make any additions.

Garden centers are adding their spring looks right now and a fire pit, string of twinkle lights or a fresh new hammock may be just the touch your patio needs.

MAKE SPRING CLEANING EASIER

THIS YEAR WITH THESE EXPERT TIPS

HUNTER BOYCE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Spring cleaning time is almost here. From getting behind heavy bookshelves to crawling under narrow tables, it’s a lot of hard work that can make a big impact on your living space. Here are a number of tips from cleaning experts on how you can make the most of your spring cleaning in 2023.

Fix air leaks

Poor insulation can send your home’s air and heat bills soaring. Take a moment to inspect every window pane and door for cracks and other openings. Most hardware stores sell epoxy solutions to fill cracks and gaps.

“As tempting as it may be, don’t skip out on a quick walk around your home to make sure there are no faulty cracks or openings within window panes and doors,” Leanne Stapf, of The Cleaning Authority, told The Spruce. “Any air leaks, no matter how small, could lead to a larger issue, resulting in poor insulation.”

Wash windows on a cloudy day

One of the most frustrating parts of cleaning glass is the streaks left behind. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Waiting for a cloudy day of overcast is an easy way to ensure that cleaning your windows goes smoothly.

“If it’s too sunny, the cleaning solution will dry too fast and you’ll have streaks,” cleaning expert Donna Smallin Kuper told Better Homes & Gardens.

Wash sconces and all other light fixtures

An important activity to add to your spring cleaning to-do list is to wash all sconces, chandeliers and any other light fixtures within the home.

“At first glance, these may not

Waiting

seem dusty, but once you wipe one, you will see a noticeable difference,” professional organizer Jamie Novak, author of “Keep This, Toss That,” told Reader’s Digest.

Don’t forget to stretch Spring cleaning can be more than tiring. Bending down to clean under tables, crouching in awkward positions to get behind book shelves and most other cleaning activities in those hard to reach areas can be hard on the joints and back. Moreover, scrubbing can wear down muscles and cause

soreness the next day.

Make sure to stretch before beginning any spring cleaning, and don’t be afraid to incorporate kneepads or other pieces of protective gear.

“Cleaning can often strain and pull lesser-used muscles, even on a fit person, as we crouch, lift, reach and kneel in ways our body is not used to,” Chief cleaning officer of MaidPro Melissa Homer told Today.

BLACK, WHITE AND GOLD

CATHY HOBBS

Tribune News Service

Neutral colors remain the go-to for many interior designers. Why? Because they blend well with other colors and provide an ideal foundation off of which to build a color story. The combination of black, white and gold is a winner for those looking to achieve a warm, neutral and luxurious look.

Here are some top tips for making the most of this modern color combination.

DO’S

1. Do use tints, tones and shades of white. Cream is a powerful neutral color.

2. Do bring in elements of gold when looking to make a bright pop of color.

3. Do use solid colors of black and white for main upholstery pieces such as sofas and chairs to create a foundation for a color palette.

4. Do repeat the combination of black, gold and white throughout the same space for cohesion.

5. Do bring black, white and gold into a space through the use of portable design

elements such as toss pillows, accessories and even lighting.

DON’TS

1. Don’t use too much of the same color in a single space. Instead, look for ways to create contrast.

2. Don’t use dark tones or colors in spaces that don’t get a lot of natural light.

3. Don’t overlook the opportunity to introduce color through the use of lighting such as chandeliers and table lamps.

4. Don’t overcrowd a space with too many furniture elements. Remember, less is more.

5. Don’t forget to add organic elements such as greenery to make a space feel warn and inviting. (Cathy

Sprucing up your space with bunnies and florals is a whimsical way to create a fun and fresh springtime atmosphere in any room Endless possibilities exist for incorporating them into your decor from figurines and wall art totextilesanddinnerware Hereare some creative and stylish ways to bring a touch of springtime charm to your home

There’s a bunny for every style

Although the origins of the Easter bunny are somewhat shrouded in mystery, one theory is the symbol of the rabbit stems from the festival of Eostre, a pagan tradition celebrating a goddess of fertility whose animal symbol was a bunny(pleaseforgivethisreligious studies minor as she geeks out just a “hare”)

Wherevertheycomefromoriginally,bunniesasdecorareavailable in all forms

In varying sizes, they range from elegant white ceramic, to detailed and delicate bronze to whimsicalandwooden Nomatter your personal style, I truly believe there is a bunny to match which leads me to my next point

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking anything will do for spring

Make bunnies the center of your table

Spring can bring a dizzying array of get-togethers and the table is a fun place to set the scene for

all the festivities during the upcoming months For an effortless springtime table, I like to keep a main centerpiece and rotate decor and each place setting around it The centerpiece can be as simple orelaborateasyoulike, andyoucan add different elements to it as the season progresses

At this table, ginger jars, statement bunnies and greenery fill the center of the table, with bunny dishes nestled among them For now little brass bunnies rest in nests of greenery at each place setting atop a stack of sweet dishes After Easter, they might be replaced with little birds or other natural elements to round out the season This next tabletop proves springtime doesn’t have to be all about pastels This tablescape takes a less expected approach with pops of citrus tones that pair perfectly with our beloved blue and white White ceramic rabbits are the perfect addition; they look absolutely at home among the fine floral dishes and blooms, and their monochromaticcolorkeepsthearrangement from looking too busy

On decorating for Easter and spring

One thing to keep in mind when decorating for Easter and spring in general is you don’t have to go overboard with decor a few new stems and a bunny or two can go a long way

But I know some that take this time of year as an opportunity to startfreshwiththeirdecor literally Ifyou’relookingtoincorporate more springtime touches around the house, consider swapping out darker, heavier textiles like throws and throw pillows for lighter and brighter options or exchanging a few pieces of art on the wall with

Need new kitchen tile?

HUNTER BOYCE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Choosing the right tile for that bigkitchenrenovationprojectcan be a tough job on its own. From ceramic and porcelain to stone, there are a number of options to choose from each with its own advantages and drawbacks

Here’s a quick breakdown of some kitchen tile basics to help make the decision a little easier

Stone

If you are interested in giving your kitchen a more natural look and texture, stone tile may be perfect for your space. There are downsides, however

“It is a more expensive material, but the beauty and the individualism of natural stone speak volumes that justify the expense,” Westside Tile and Stone reported “They do require special care, but when you follow the recommended regiment, they will always look beautiful. Some choices in natural stone are: marble, limestone, travertine, slate, granite (and) quartz.”

For a lower maintenance stone kitchen floor, consider granite. For better textures and more color options, consider marble. But, there is a stone out there for almost every style and need.

Ceramic Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are great for two reasons: versatility and cost effectiveness If practicality best fits your kitchen’s purpose, ceramic is almost never a bad choice.

“The tiles are made by shaping and firing a selection of clays and minerals to form a biscuit,” Fitzgerald Kitchens reported “These are then glazed and can then be printed with a pattern or texture before firing them again.

“They are extremely practical,

economical and durable Because of the tile’s glazed surface, they are also hygienic and allow for a multitude of designs and finishes”

Porcelain

Fired at higher temperatures and forged from finer, denser clay, porcelain is ceramic’s high-performance counterpart. It’s tougher, more resistant and doesn’t stain as easily For kitchens with heavy foot traffic, it doesn’t get much better than porcelain tiles

“In the world of floor and wall coverings, porcelain tiles are the undisputed king in terms of durability,”Express Flooring reported “The tiles are heated at extreme temperatures resulting in an extremely rigid, durable, and stain-resistant tile that is impenetrable to moisture. They can be installed in the harshest of places and can withstand cold, rain and extreme weather conditions for an extended period of time.”

The first step of drywall repair, according to HGTV, is to assess the damage If the drywall damage is limited to a few small nail holes, the damage can likely be remedied with some spackle (also called mud), a putty knife and a sanding block If the damage is more sizable, then the repair process is going to be a little more complex

For larger holes, the repair will require mesh tape to strengthen the spackle’s bond to the wall This strategy can be applied for long cracks and coin-sized holes

Patching drywall

If the damage is larger than a coin-sized hole, the repair may require a patch of drywall as well For these more complex repairs, the first step is to assess what kind of drywall your home has Drywall comes in different levels of thickness, generally 3/8, 1/2 or 5/8-inch Cut out a healthy piece of drywall from the damaged spot to assess what size drywall you will need to purchase for your repairs

Once you have identified the size of your drywall, the next step is to find your studs Use a stud finder to locate the nearest studs to the drywall damage and mark their locations with a pencil When you are done, your pencil markings should frame the drywall damage

“Use a drywall saw to cut along the lines you just drew until you reach the wall studs,” Home Depot advised “When you reach a stud, measure and mark 3/4

of an inch farther in, which will be the center of the stud Score these lines with a utility knife

The edge of the patch should be directly over the stud so both the existing drywall and patch have support Continue cutting along the lines carefully with the utility knife, making several passes with each cut slightly deeper than the previous cut Remove the damaged piece of drywall ”

Once the damaged drywall has been removed, it’s time to install the support Cut a 1-by-3-inch piece of lumber and screw it with drywall screws vertically behind the wall opening you created Make sure the screw heads sink a little below the surface of the drywall

Use your damaged piece of drywall to trace and ultimately cut out a great fitting replacement piece from the healthy drywall you purchased previously Once the newly cut piece of drywall has been placed inside the open patch area of the wall secure it to the wall with drywall screws but ensure the screws are at least an inch from the edges of the new piece of drywall to avoid cracking

Sealing the patch

Once the new piece of drywall has been secured in place, run strips of fiberglass drywall mesh tape around the edges of the patch Spread spackle across the patch and tape until you have created a smooth flat surface Let the compound dry for as long as required by the manufacturer This process must then be repeated with a second coat of spackle

Once dried, wipe the patched area with a tack cloth and sanding cloth before painting over the repair

Ceramic Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are great for two reasons: versatility and cost effectiveness If best fits your kitchen’s purpose, ceramic is almost never a bad choice.

They can be installed in the harshest of places and can withstand cold, rain and extreme weather conditions for an extended period of time.” ©2023

Curb appeal, the general attractiveness of a home’s visage, accounts for up to 7% of a house’s sales price, according to a 2020 report by The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. Luckily, making the most out of your home’s look is a relatively easy task.

Some curb appeal improvements are purely cosmetic, but most involve regular landscaping and maintenance.

According to HGTV, one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve a home’s curb appeal is to paint the front door. Exterior paint costs roughly $35 per gallon, which makes giving your front door a new coat of paint a relatively cheap opportunity. Choose a bold color for the front door, something that will make it stand out and draw attention to the home.

Another cheap way to improve your home’s curb appeal is to add some greenery. While plants take time and effort to maintain, the upside to your home’s value is worth the effort. While installing a full garden can have a massive impact, simply using plants to accentuate key visual points — such as windows and doors — can have a significant impact as well.

“Whether it’s a wreath or a planter full of greens, this bit of nature gives liveliness to your front door,” Shea McGee, of Stu-

dio McGee, told Marthastewart. com.

According to Moving.com, simply maintaining your front lawn is an easy and effective way to significantly improve curb appeal.

Mow the grass, rake the leaves and pull any weeds. Water the lawn to

prevent any brown spots from appearing. Those in dryer climates may have a more difficult time maintaining a lively lawn, making shrub beds and artificial turf better alternatives.

Another great way to improve curb appeal is to replace any

old hardware at the front of the home, Better Homes & Gardens reported. The front door lockset, mailbox and any overhead light fixtures visible from the street are all great opportunities to bring attention-getting style to your home. Contemporary homes of-

Nothing spruces up outdoor entertaining like a unique centerpiece. A water feature in your yard can make an excellent conversation piece and provide a customized entertaining spot. And water is a key part of nature, adding to the energy and life of your home.

Only a few homes have water features, but they may be easier to install than you think. So let’s dive into (pun intended) the ways water features can give your yard a sparkling boost.

Water features usually come in one of three forms: ponds, waterfalls, and fountains. Each comes with its pros and cons.

Some water features can be connected to a basic water source via hose, but others require a new line to be run out to them, which usually requires the assistance of a licensed plumber. They might also trigger backflow valve inspection requirements, such as those required for irrigation systems in many areas. When purchasing your water feature, ensure you know what’s legally required.

Fountains

National average: $850$4,500

Fountains can be among the least expensive water features to add to your yard. A small bubbling fountain in a birdbath might cost as little as $50. However, most fountains are larger and cost around $2,600 on average.

You can select from various prefabricated fountains made from plastic, resin, fiberglass, concrete or stone. Plastic and resin fountains are among the least expensive and the easiest to install. A concrete or stone fountain will usually be the most expensive, but it also offers the most striking appearance and the chance to customize it to your desires. A stone or concrete fountain can be a large round installation allowing seating around the water and a great central gathering spot.

In addition to low cost, fountains offer relatively low space requirements

and little need for maintenance, but they can still provide a lovely appearance and a clear splashing nature sound.

A fountain usually isn’t enough to attract or maintain life, such as fish or frogs, though it may attract butterflies and birds.

Waterfalls

National average: $1,500$15,000

Your average waterfall is probably constructed from concrete, fiberglass or stone. Like fountains, they can come in small or large sizes, prefabricated or bespoke. They add a dynamic

element to your yard and relaxing motion and sounds. You can install a standard waterfall that cascades over rocks into a small pond (more on ponds below) or a “pondless waterfall” that continually recycles the water and leaves no standing water. These have lower

ten see great success with brushed nickel finishes, while more traditional homes can use oiled-bronze fixtures.

maintenance requirements than basic waterfalls.

For a truly outstanding and unique appearance, consider installing a water wall. These use steel, tile, concrete, or other materials for a distinctive vertical look as water continually cascades down. You can customize them with various options, including LED lights or reflective materials, and they particularly stand out in outdoor kitchens or pool areas. However, with prices up to $15,000, a water wall is among the most expensive water features you can install.

Ponds

National average: $1,200$5,500

Of all the water feature options, artificial ponds tend to be costly and require the most maintenance, but they can also offer the richest and more rewarding experience.

A small pond, replicating the look of a natural pond, is not a complicated installation. Sometimes, you can dig to find a natural water source, but most artificial ponds use liners, underlayment and water pumps to keep the water moving and where it belongs. A pump is essential to prevent stagnation and the standing water that attracts bugs.

On the higher end, which can cost $10,000 or more, you can install a pond intended to support aquatic life, such as koi or goldfish. Ponds tend to require a lot of maintenance, such as regular inspection of moving parts and pumps. Tweet your home care questions with #AskingAngi and we’ll try to answer them in a future column.

Choosing a fresh paint color for a dull living room can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be. According to the pros, picking the best living room paint color can even be achieved in a few simple steps

Here’s a quick breakdown of what they had to say:

Create a color scheme

First, select colors from objects in your living room

“Take a pillow from the family-room sofa, your favorite tie or scarf,or a painting anything that conveys comfort or has an emotional connection for you and take that object to the paint store,” Architectural color consultant Bonnie Krims told This Old House “Find three sample strips with those colors, and you instantly have 15 to 18 colors you can use, since each sample strip typically contains six paint colors”

Next, choose a paint color from the trio of options This will be your wall color while the other two colors can be used around the room through fabrics and furnishings

Don’t overcomplicate it

Krims is not the only expert that believes in the importance of a good color scheme According to Behr Paint’s color expert and vice president of color and creative services Erika Woelfel, sticking to a color scheme is a simple way to keep things practical

“Be sure that your wall color doesn’t

clash with focal points throughout the room,” Woelfel told My Domaine “A general rule is to stick to one palette of three to five colors One white or light color, one to two neutrals, and one or two supporting colors”

Too many colors can be a pain on the senses, especially after a tiring day at work Stick to a simple, yet effective, color scheme to make the most out of your living room paint color choice

Consider earthy colors

Bright colors can look dazzling on a paint chip or color swatch, but going bright can be a bad idea

“The biggest mistake people make, especially when they’re staring at a wall of paint swatches, is they end up going too clear with the color like a kid’s crayon blue instead of something a little bit more muted and sophisticated,” Rebecca West, founder of Seriously Happy Homes, told Apartment Therapy

While bright colors can be used effectively in the home, using them as living room paint colors often requires expertise West contrasted a jar full of jelly beans and a jar full of beautiful river rocks to help explain the conundrum

“They are both full of gorgeous color, but those natural hues are going to be more timeless, long-lasting, and easy on the eyes” she said ©2023 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Improved showerheads

Simply swapping out your showerhead can change the entire feel of your shower A massaging head provides a relaxing change for a low cost,or you can pay more to install a rain showerhead that delivers water from directly above, as if during a spring rain. You can also add multiple shower heads with specific controls for a fine-tuned experience.

Shower seat

A bench or seat is a simple upgrade that can yield significant results By installing a seat as part of the shower rather than just a separate piece, you can closely match the aesthetic and lower the risk of the seat moving around. This helps prevent shower falls and gives you more surfaces to work with during your shower While you’re at it, consider building custom ledges for the stuff you want to keep in the shower

Sound system

If you enjoy taking your time in long,

Heated towel bar

Here’s an upgrade that does exactly what it says on the box: A heated towel bar keeps towels fresh and warm for that “right out of the dryer” feeling when you step out of the shower Placing towels back on it after using will help speed up the drying process, reducing risk of mildew

Smart showerheads

With a digital smart showerhead, you can customize the water pressure, temperature, and spray settings from your device or voice-activated digital assistant Many smart heads allow you to create multiple digital presets for the perfect shower experience based on the needs of the moment.

When it comes to spring cleaning, the No 1 enemy of the home is dirty and difficult to remove and it’s everywhere That enemy is, of course, dust And it begs the question: Why do homes get so dusty?

“Household dust is a complex matrix of components including dust mites, dust mitefeces, bacteria, mold, petdander, small insects, pollen, and particles,” Ketan Patel, design manager of floor care at Dyson, told Better Homes & Gardens “Dust mite droppings, dead bodies of dust mites, pet dander, and small insects are included as allergens”

According to Home Advisor, how quickly dust collects inside a home depends on a few environmental factors The age and quality of a home’s HVAC filter, duct leaks and humidity levels can all affect how quickly dust accumulates

A great way to reduce dust buildup in the home is to invest in a high-quality air purifier Purifiers with UltraHEPA carbon and volatile organic compound (VOC) filters can eliminate dust,

Both coffee tables and ottomans serve as functional decorations that blend seamlessly into the design of your living space. While we believe that you can’t go wrong with either choice, knowing the differences between them, and what questions to ask when deciding to bring one home, can help you make the right decision for your home. What are a few things to keep in mind when searching for a sofa companion?

When selecting a new sofa companion, there are a few things to consider to help make your choice a little easier.

1. First, what is the ultimate purpose of the piece? Will it be a place to kick up your feet or set a cup of tea? Will it primarily be used for styling your favorite accessories? The answer will help give you direction.

2. What kind of wear will the piece receive in your home? Is it likely to see condensation rings from stray cups, or do you have a kitten at home that would love to use the side of an ottoman as a scratching post?

3. Consider the design and feel of the room. How much wood exists in the space already? What colors and textures are at play? How much space do you have? With what existing pieces will the new piece work?

4. Lastly, consider the styles and colors of your sofa and other adjacent pieces. Are you looking for a standout piece or a supporting character that ties the rest of the pieces together?

When is a round coffee table or ottoman preferable to a square or rectangle one?

Oval and round coffee tables are great for breaking up an angular space and making edges seem softer. We often choose round when we just need another shape in the space so everything isn’t so square, or for rooms and groupings where space is tight.

A rectangular option is preferable for longer sofas (or ones with a chaise) to provide easy access to coffee, late-night snacks or cocktails of choice. Depending on fabric and wood finish choices, this look can be more informal than a round ottoman.

Having your designer create a floor plan for your space is a great way to see a bird’seye view of your room, ensuring that pieces and walkways are the right size and in the right places before you make your selections.

Purchasing a coffee table

Coffee (and cocktail) tables come in many shapes and sizes and can range in texture from wood, metal and even stone. Incorporating natural elements into your space, like a wooden coffee table for instance, is one alluring way to enrich a design. Using multiple high-contrast wood pieces in a room adds depth and visual interest.

A coffee table may be preferable for:

– A more formal room

– A flat surface/high functionality

– Extra storage

What are the limitations to a coffee table?

– Not as comfy and casual as an ottoman – no place for feet to go

– Easier to bang a knee or stub a toe on (and does not come childproofed)

– Extra storage is visible (often just a lower shelf or tabletop)

How to hire a house painter

GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

If spring has you thinking about an exterior refresh, you might be looking to hire a house painter to give your home a new look, follow these hints to make sure you get a pro.

Exterior and Interior Work

For this job, you want to look for an exterior painter. They will handle all the surfaces on the outside of your home. Some painters only do interior work; save them for when the kitchen needs updating. Before you start making calls, familiarize yourself with the surfaces on the outside of your home. Look around home stores and decorating magazines to get an idea of the look you want. You can even go so far as to get sample paints to give yourself a good idea of what colors you might like.

Picking a Painter

HANDOUT/TNS a coffee table with fluted edges adds softness to the colorful space.

Purchasing an ottoman

An ottoman may be preferable for:

– A more informal space

– Comfort vs. functionality

– Incorporating more pattern into room design

– Extra seating in a pinch

– Rooms with too much wood or too many hard surfaces

What are the limitations to an ottoman?

– Not a flat surface for placing items – need a basket or tray to safely place things like drinks

– Easier to stain and more challenging to clean

– Can fall into the trendy instead of timeless design trap

Designing an ottoman

We love ottomans for so many reasons. One of our favorites? They can be completely tailor-made to your style. Customers can choose the style, shape, leg, fabric, nail heads, trim and wood finish.

When it comes to designing your own sofa companion, just have fun with it. But I do have one piece of advice to impart for those of you looking to design with leather. Hides are a natural material, and therefore no two are alike. It’s part of what makes them such a great texture-add to a space. But if you are a person who likes things to not show imperfection and wear (which is perfectly OK!), natural leather probably isn’t the way to go.

home. They will walk around and look at your current paint and evaluate any obstacles you have around the house. The more thorough the inspection that they do, the more accurate your quote will be.

Show each painter the looks and colors you have in mind and get their opinion. They may suggest that walls that get an extreme amount of sun be painted a lighter color or they may know that a certain product or finish doesn’t work well in your weather conditions. Listen to their expertise, but beware of getting pushed into using something you don’t want.

The painter will then give you an itemized quote. Compare the quotes that you got and note the differences in each one. Get references and call them to check.

Ask Angi

It might seem early to start thinking about your air conditioning unit, but late winter and early spring are the ideal times to be contacting your HVAC pro for an inspection and tuneup A twice-yearly HVAC inspection once in fall before heating starts, once in spring before you need the cooling can catch surprises before they become expensive ones. And regular attention from HVAC techs will add years to the lifespan of your unit

You’ll get ahead on waiting lists if you start making calls now

Your average AC inspection costs about $100, and if you have a regular service contract with an HVAC provider, it’s often included with your contract (Incidentally, getting a service contract with an HVAC provider is usually a good idea; it covers things like routine maintenance, and often gives you priority scheduling in an emergency ) During the inspection and tuneup, which should take about an afternoon, your tech will test all operating temperatures and pressure; inspect the coils, blower, drain line, and motor; verify that the proper refrigerant levels are set; and lubricate where needed (In most cases, they’ll take a look at the heating side as well, to see if any winter wearand-tear has led to a need for a repair )

This inspection does more than just check for future problems

It also improves efficiency, makes the temperature more comfortable and lowers energy costs.

Pro tips

Sometimes the simplest things can result in an air conditioning problem Consider these things when hot days arrive:

Check your circuit breaker if something goes wrong

Your AC unit draws a lot of power and usually has a dedicated circuit breaker

If the cooling goes out, check to see if you’ve tripped the breaker

Keep the outdoor unit clean

Air conditioning outdoor units need venting to function Don’t let plants overgrow them, and make sure no dirt or debris is getting in

Don’t overload your thermostat

Even the best

air conditioners have an upper limit to how much temperature differential they can account for Don’t expect your system to chill your home to 60 degrees Fahrenheit if it’s 100 outside Many systems, especially older ones, are designed for a maximum 20-degree differential Replace your filters regularly This can never be repeated often enough! Running your AC on old filters is like driving your car hard without an oil change. It makes everything work harder, blocks up airflow and makes the system less efficient And sooner or later, if your filters are dirty enough, they can lead to a breakdown.
