Awards & Achievements Weiss selected Noon Rotary Club student in Swimming, National Honor Society, IHSMA All State Choir 2013, and YIELD course graduate. Weiss’ community activities include attending Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he volunteers to teach Sunday school and serve dinners, and volunteering at the SIDS Memorial Walk. Weiss plans to attend the University of Iowa next year and pursue a degree in microbiology with a pre-med intent.

Lisa graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 2007, NIACC with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 2010, University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2012, and is a Registered Nurse at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. JONATHAN DOLAN, of Marble Rock, Iowa, is the son of David and Marilyn Dolan of Marble Rock, Iowa. Jonathan graduated from Rockford High School in 2008, NIACC in 2010, UNI with a Bachelor Degree in the Study of Religion in 2013, and is a Teacher’s Aide at Rockford schools in Rockford, Direct Support Staff at Comprehensive Systems in Mason City, Iowa. The couple met through their involvement in NIACC Singers in 2008 and were engaged on 11/11/11 at 11:11 a.m. They will reside in Dubuque, Iowa, where Jonathan will attend Wartburg Theological Seminary. The couple will be married at on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa.

Award & Achievement Waldorf Music Fraternity receives Award FOREST CITY — The Waldorf College music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon received the Outstanding Student Organization award, at this year’s Waldorf College Students Excelling in Activities and Leadership awards. Waldorf established a Mu Phi Epsilon International Professional Music Fraternity chapter on campus three years ago. The chapter is still in the building stages with

six student members: Haley Rubin, of Brandon, S.D.; Jonathan Overy, of Manly; Kelli Lair, of Lake Mills; Sam Morrison, of Walcott; Britt Banks, of Sioux City, and Sarah Keely, of Forest City. Students do not need to be music majors or minors to join, but they must have taken at least one music class. The group has held more than 10 events this year, including caroling,

volunteering at a piano festival, and performing at local nursing homes. The organization has performed more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work and community service this year. Dr. Kristin Taylor, associate professor of music and the organization faculty advisor, and Kelli Lair will represent the chapter at the annual international convention July 29-Aug. 2, in Sacramento, Calif.

Greder receives Fellowship at U of I IOWA CITY — David Greder, a native of Mason City, is one of 35 recipients of the Ballard and Seashore Fellowship at the University of Iowa. Ballard and Seashore Fellowships are intended to help students in the social sciences and humanities complete their dissertations. This is a final year fellowship for students who expect to graduate by the end of the summer 2015 term. Students are nominated by their departments or programs. The number of fellowships is limited and awards are highly competitive. Departments may nominate one student for every eight doctoral candidates, up to a maximum of three students. The fellowship provides a stipend of $20,000 for the academic year, along with two credit hours of tuition per semester (but not mandatory fees) and a health/ dental insurance allowance. To be eligible, students must have successfully completed the comprehensive examination by the nomination deadline.

BVU Student Newspaper wins Awards STORM LAKE — Buena Vista University (BVU) student newspaper, The Tack, placed first in the nation for online news website overall excellence, in the annual Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) national media contest. The SCJ national media contest entries are judged by professionals in the industry. The judge for the online news website overall excellence category was Lamar Salter, Associate Multimedia Editor at TODAY.com/ NBC News Digital in New York. A first-place award went to a photo slideshow, “Photography Students Capture High School Music Program,” created by Chelsey Goetz, a junior digital media major from Lakota, and Zachary Schmidt, a junior theatre and digital media major from Northwood. A second-place award went to a radio feature package, “Dr. Paula Keeler Retires,” created for KBVU by Chelsey Goetz.

MCARSPA Merit Awards MASON CITY — The Mason City Area Retired School Personnel Association has awarded its two annual merit awards to Jacob Heineman, of Garner, and Ethan Meints, of Sheffield. The awards are given to the applicants chosen by the MCARSPA committee. It is focused on the student’s desire to continue working toward a degree in education. MCARSPA is an area unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, which is affiliated with the National Retired Teachers Association. Any retired school personnel in this area is eligible to join. Units develop projects for their volunteers to contribute to community needs with the focus on education.
