Excellence Award of Graduation Project

The graduation project is a design representation of my aspiration and design thinking of creating spaces with the intention of fostering a more cohesive society. To embrace different cultures and diversity to enhance community and international bonding. Personally, I have a huge interest in finding the balance of the overall atmosphere and conditions of the space, as well as utilizing numerous materials with similar yet different textures to create visual depth. Symmetry, openness, and the play with scale help to generate the new insertion’s architectural form that corresponds with the existing architectural shell, which helps to respect the place’s current identity while also endowing the venue with a new identity for the future.

I see interior design as a macro and global subject with endless possibilities for future and present development. In the grand scheme of things, I believe it plays a vital part in the reinterpretation and preservation of cultures and heritage. Where architectural and spatial forms may inherit previous atmospheres and situations while delivering a more contemporary design to establish a new identity while inheriting the old. Preserving historical architecture is something extremely meaningful and important to inherit through development for the future generation. As history creates culture, which is something that brings depth and identity to a design.

The Intergenerational Recreation Center

The Dyna-mo Intergenerational Recreation Center operates as an engine for intergenerational activities to bridge community and social gaps for the future through highly inclusive, interactive and innovative implemented spaces. The spaces will be able to offer you a unique experience to create new memories while commemorating the past.

The Journal of Intergenerational Relationships reveals that intergeneration interaction and knowledge exchange enhances the substantive relationship between the younger generation and the rest of the community.

location & architecture morphology

The site is formally located in Sydney in the suburb of Rozelle, with a dense population providing endless opportunities for us as designers to offer the place a new identity while retaining the existing cultural features. The lack of social gathering spaces commercial and cultural spaces, parks etc in the suburb raises the issue of the lack of community bonding.

The new system of the dyna-mo intergenerational recreation centre correlates with the original coal electrical generation process. Transforming each stage of the process into a new system gives the historical venue a new identity that helps to bridge the gaps between multiple generations.

The overall architectural form inserted within the site depicts the machinery and the energy production process in the White Bay Power Station, which acts as a fundamental part of my design.

The energy production process indicates the metaphoric notion through several tubular forms. It reflects the idea of the transition of elements into electricity which has taken a great role in Sydney’s past development. Tubular forms act as a metaphor for spatial linkages, reflecting a fluid and dynamic passage from one object to another, as well as creating specific moments and nodes for people to connect and transition from space to space.

The journey begins at the base of the WBPS, absorb and learn about the history and bring your knowledge to the next few spaces above to complete a fulfilled journey of remembrance and new memories.

Tubular circulation tunnels mimic the coal and energy production system, acting as a metaphor linking the past present and future. Welcome on board to the first stage of your journey!

TRIGGER EMOTIONAL BELONGINGS

Record new memories / Sydney past development ‘records‘ / Place to imprint and meet

Joinery pieces are designed in the way to represent the coal electrical generation process in a simple way that consists of 4 of the main process. You will be able to assimilate past knowledge in a unique way. The system will operate as the following:

Referring to the previous use of the site as a coal electricity power station, you will be able to experience an immersive spatial experience through this space. The interactive element within the tunnel allows you to have a metaphorical practical experience to activate the fog engine.

Use tunnel expression and nodes to connect spaces and increace chance of interaction.

Step 1. ‘Collect’ joinery - the first activation piece from the fog engine

Step 2. ‘Mill’ joinery the third activation piece from the fog engine

Step 3. ‘Rotate’ joinery - the second activation piece from the fog engine

Step 4. ‘Generate’ joinery - the last activation piece from the fog engine

The engine will operate when you press the start button and will release hot air through the tube which will create a chemical reaction of water vapour from the air, condensing due to the cooling effect of the carbon dioxide.

The combination of the fog engine and dry ice is a futuristic and sustainable way to generate fog to recreate the past spatial condition of having a smoke.

Being the bonding space in the newly proposed centre, it is designed to have diverse possibilities through the use of space. Without having any partition walls and enclosure, being a fully open space that is able to gather hundreds of people, makes the acoustic condition very chaotic. It uses a spatial way to mimic the mass spatial condition of being very hot and noisy.

COMMUNITY ENGINE

It is uniquely designed to suit an intergenerational concept of having 2 spatial conditions during the day all in an inclusive manner. During the day the community engine will operate as a normal gathering space, whilst during the night, the spatial atmosphere will be changed into a more futuristic and young condition.

Allow diverse ways of moving through space, receiving the same atmospheric condition. Vertical connection for connected experience from different levels.

The ‘hottest‘ space within the WBPS, a reinterpretation of the past spacial condition. Reflected through the chaotic and energetic setting of the space. The multifunctional spatial division provides diverse activities that act as the fuel to boost the intergenerational community for the future.

The WBPS interior views are a heritage exhibition for visitors while they transit on the ramp. A guided exhibition path observing heritage views and activating past worker experience of ‘working in the air‘. 2 level tunnel, different experience; normal circulation ramp that also allows visitors to experience past working conditions.

The ramp designed to locate near the wall and the large glass partitions, allowing visitors to have a closer look at the existing materials and also to touch and feel the texture. Able to see clearly of whats happening on the other spaces.

Past work condition area are only designed as a one spot area, which protects visitors privacy when walking on the ramp. It is inclusive for visitors to their own choice of experience

According to a video clip about interviewing past WBPS workers, one interviewee mentioned “On top of the boilers, had no head for heights on top of an extension ladder changing the globes and the roof...... well working at heights working in dangerous conditions mean the best the place was dripping without asbestos, I mean used to waled around and hold my breath around there no the pump rooms and things behind because it was in the air.”

The existing coal hoppers were merged within the design of the space, where a custom rotatable book engine is designed to mimic the changing nature of sustainability and social issues. Pressure sensors are embedded for interactive and heritage activation purposes, which creates a sense of participation feeling. A metaphoric meaning for the importance of each person during the past development of Sydney.

Self-serve digital devices for borrowing books, creating incidence for visitors to come back to the place again.

The custom book engine automatically rotates in one direction at a slow pace, representing the motion of how electricity is produced as well as reflecting on the proposed with a dynamic movement through space.

The concluding space for the intergenerational heritage journey, the journey does not end here, it leads you to the next level of mental wellbeing, triggering visitor’s reflection on the past and present ideology of sustainability aiming to plan for a close bonded, rich cultured and healthy future.

REFLECT AND MOVE FORWARD

Covid-19 response of having 0 contacts with staff. No seating area, to control the interaction with people in the space.

Visitors are to DIY their own coffee fully self-served by the newly designed coffee and milk dispensers. Concluding with the recycling and sustainable concept through this space, with the recycled coffee ground feature as a symbol of the green future. It allows us to reflect on recycling everyday objects like the coffee ground which can be used to wash and for other purposes that can really make a change to the future. This is also using the space to educate present and future generations in a more playful manner.

Retain existing building height by leaving out voids and creating new voids. 360 o view of the whole interior at the top. Roof penetration allowing light into the whole vertical space generates an idea of recreation.

1.5M Staff makes coffee from the second floor and to pour into a container that uses pressure to pump the coffee and milk down. Hybrid x Future Work Space

The Covid-19 Pandemic has led me to reflect extensively on the learning and working environment around us. The past pandemic has led to a series of challenges in the social realm for both employers and social workers. New measures of the workspace have been brought out to the public eye, which in some instances has affected our work mode. However, due to this being a recent global issue, considering the longevity of my design, I want to explore some new possibilities for the workspace. Not only for the Covid-19 pandemic but also for the future concerns of the new virus or any other social concerns that may occur.

The pandemic changes the traditional working mode and the worker’s need for different functions in a space. It at the same time generates spatial critiques that allow designers to reflect and have a deeper thought into whether the traditional mode of work of having fixed working stations and clear boundaries of functionalities of spatial needs is required. To use an Avant grade eye to derive the working mode and spatial needs in the post-pandemic era. Where the workspace will be hybrid and more flexible to suit different situations in the future, forming a more comfortable, secure, healthy and highly cohesive work environment.

The School of Built Environment have an excess of space within the Red Centre West Wing which they want to convert into an experimental Research Incubator to attract high profile Industry partnerships and project themselves as leaders in transdisciplinary Futures research.

IDEO will be taking up residence in the new Incubator space.

For the future workspace, “FLEXIBLE“ & “HYBRID“ work mode is critical to consider with a foresee global vision. Workspaces shall be able to suit the future social issue of the post-pandemic era in a longevity vision. Work trends and environments for hybrid workers shall also be innovative and healthy from a global perspective. There will be a CONCEPTUAL COLLISION of information transparency and employee work environment privacy, achieving a equal and collaborative work setting.

In this perpetually undefined future workspace of IDEO, both physical and internet tracks will be used to create a novel work mode and work system that will naturally bring flexibility and hybrid into the space. The spatial forms will be kaleidoscopic, referring to the constantly altering spaces. Using basic curved shapes and squishing, rotating, intersecting, and overlapping techniques to create positive and negative space.

The spatial experience of this zone is an interpretation of a work as from home, where individual ‘bed and couch‘ areas are provided for staff members to use when they need rest. This demonstrates the work condition when employees are working at home.

The formal meeting space are designed for both staff members and clients to have formal meetings. Located away from the main work station decreases the acoustic level, in a semi open setting.. Under a COVID setting, mesh curtains allows air flow in the whole interior which ventilates fresh air.

Tetris Play-Scape

Rapid urbanization is a global topic that has been focused on in recent days, whilst china’s urbanization has been developing rapidly for years, where professionals mentioned: “the scale of urbanization in China is without precedent in human history.” Urbanization enriches and shapes a city’s physical environment and also transforms and embraces its culture. However, due to the competition for space in the city, children’s outdoor play area is one of the components that have a lack of concern during development. This topic inspires me as I think, through the increase of urbanized cities around the world, this issue has a great possibility to become more significant. So I’d like to explore a possible solution to help and adapt under different circumstances and environments. Since play areas for kids is extremely important for their physical and mental development they should be prioritized.

My spatial inspiration is from the game Tetris, where this game is popular among several generations think it is a great entry point to create a meaningful play scape that not only for playing but also commemorates the changing times. Utilizing modern design techniques, and translating a 2D game into a 3D space.

According to the article ‘Explore Children’s Outdoor Play Spaces of Community Areas in High-density Cities in China: Wuhan as an Example’, Wuhan is a city in china that has developed rapidly and gradually that result in a dense and modern city in recent days. This, therefore, led to a decrease in children’s outdoor play areas due to the competition for space. Whilst children’s outdoor play area is an important sector in children’s mental and physical development, it is essential to create a flexible play-scape that offers functions that contributes to children’s physical and psychological health, and also help to develop social interactions and social networks.

To restrict the form exploration experiment, I’ve limited the use of Tetris cubes variation, where each variation has only been used once, with the maximum height of 3000mm.

Dividing the play area into 3 primary zones of climbing, crawling and pop out zones, and supplemented by 2 secondary zones of the connecting and observation zones. In this manner it creates a more complex yet clear circulation for kids to explore.

The materiality consideration was based on the overall spatial design and elements within it. Where Flexibility and modality takes a major role in this project. The selection of using silicone and wire mesh, enables each modular unit to be easy to install and is flexible on site, and also simple to mould during prefabrication construction off-site. The combination of silicone and wire mesh implements the idea of light weight but also enough firm and secure to climb on.

The Floating Community

In my perspective as a graduate from the interior architecture program, believe it is critical to identify and address current societal issues in the built environment, in order to make a difference in the actual world. While population growth offers certain benefits for society’s development, it has also raised societal concerns. As a result of the housing shortage and high rental prices, not everyone can afford to pay the rental charge, this will eventually lead to a series of uncontrollable repercussions. The article The anchor-outs: San Francisco’s bohemian boat dwellers fight for their way of life ’ from The Guardian reveals a specific result due to the high rental prices. I think this is quite an interesting and meaningful topic to explore since it is a global issue that needs to pay more attention to. So I want to express my design ideas on this topic and create a design solution for the target audience.

Location

The site is located at Richardson Bay, Sausalito in California. Utilizing old vessels from the past days and ships that are planed to be abandoned within the bay area. Which are all ships from the anchor-out floating home community.

Design Goal

According to the location, history and past development of the bay area, there’s a need to boost the tourism sector for the country in order to reduce alienation between the locals and other cities as well as to promote the culture.

According to Geoff Boeing analyzed statistics, it shows the different daytime destiny within this area, where San Fransisco has the most traffic density compared to the other areas, which provides opportunity to attract more visitors to the site.

Sausalito starts being a place where ships can get fresh water, and is still a part of Mexico. Alsop a small fishing, boat repair and ranching center, where the boat repair businesses remain active today.

Railroad has been introduced within Sausalito, where tracks has been built to link today’s wine country. It transformed into a key hub connecting San Fransisco.

This period being the starting point of Sausalito’s houseboat communities, and provided a place for Sausalito’s already active artist community to grow.

During World War II north of Sausalito turned into a massive Marin ship Shipyards that mainly produce merchant ships to carry supplies around the world.

After the War ended Sausalito, parts of the land been sold to governments, ship builders and land developers. A community of artists, maritime workers and craftspeople, and the boat building and boat repair businesses blossomed.

1960

An creative colony grew where artist’s, writers and musicians were inspired to settle in the area. Floating homes began to trend in the Maritime, where artist Jean Varda, philosopher and author Alan Watts (who remains influential today) etc. joined the improvised floating homes community.

1980

The anchor-out floating home community faced a crisis, where they were forced to move their boats into the harbor. Some of the 1940’s era vessels were disintegrating, and there was no money to restore them. Incidents of violence increased. Waste and bad smell increased resulting in “The Houseboat Wars”.

Issue still remains, my intention is to create a new supportive hub to relocate and provide opportunities for these boat house owners, and allowing them and their culture to influence residence and visitors, to foster and boost the art and boat culture to the new genration.

1. According to research the article ‘The anchor-outs: San Francisco’s bohemian boat dwellers fight for their way of life’ from The Guardian, reveals that the majority of ships at the bay area are for residential purpose which are illegal and unsafe, this therefore started the crisis.

2. Add new column structural elements into the existing ship, to create visual spatial divisions. It shows that ship no.02 and no.03 has the most diverse spatial division.

3. Due to the different activities within the space natural light conditions plays a important role for each activities. According to the thermal analysis, it shows that ship no.02 receives the most natural light, ship no.03 the second and ship no.01 the last.

4. Apply the new functions within the different areas. Zen scenting, zen tea and mediation can be held in ship no.01 since it all requires a more enclosed and ambient space. However, every space are flexible, with moving furnitures to enable different activities to be held over the year.

5. Functionalities are distributed according to the needs of spatial scale, acoustic, light and openness. Some activities will be held on different ships according to the season and weather condition, creating a highly flexible layout of how the ship can be connected.

Block Relief Prints

This project focuses mainly on the experimentation of typographic image making, print techniques and materials, in order to express the narrative graphically through postcards. The design concept elaborates from the article 68% of the world population projected to live in urban areas by 2050, says UN which discusses the topic urban growth in a global perspective. The reason that I’ve chosen this text is that it’s where my interest is at and also by reading the text I’ve noticed that it’s full of data and comparisons between past, current and future urbanization development statistics. Which I think it’s quite interesting to work with and has a lot of potentials to play with hierarchy in the postcard design.

Since urbanization is not an intuitive change, but a subtle development that usually takes many years for people to have an intuitive view. People tend to focus on the benefits of urbanization at most times, rather than the actual process, however it is essential to know the process in order to better understand the future sustainable development of the country as these are the foundation of urbanization.

The text talked about several different ideas of urbanization, but the information still correlates to each other. Based on the text, I’ve chosen 4 topics: Settlements, Population concentration, residential shift and rural decline. Which think covers my main idea to create informative postcards to inform audiences, by using key statistics to communicate the bond between sustainable development and rapid urbanization.

For my final designs, I’ve worked a lot with grids and text hierarchy, as want to emphasize data in my design. Since it’s a double-sided postcard, I’ve used a reveres color palette on the front and back. Where the front being the informative data, and the back highlighting the main topic being expressed.

“By 2030, the world is projected to have 43 mega cities with more than 10 million inhabitants, most of them in developing regions.”

I’ve played a bit with the typology, for the ‘U’ I’ve added windows to make it like a high rise building, and for the ‘i’ I’ve changed the dot to a triangle so that it symbolizes houses. For the back, I’ve stretched the bottom of the text symbolizing the developing journey.

“By 2050, it is projected that India will have added 416 million urban dwellers, China 255 million and Nigeria 189 million.”

The front design I’ve incorporated several bars connecting each of the countries to one point, mimicking the nature of rapid urbanization is a global development. For the back I’ve overlapped the lines to create the middle part referring to ‘concentration’

“Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050.”

I’ve used a curved line to indicate the journey towards the residential shift on the front. For the back of the post card I’ve stretched the typology and curved it to symbolize the shifting process, which also create visual narrative that any process won’t be a straight line.

“The global rural population is now close to 3.4 billion and is expected to rise slightly and then decline to 3.1 billion by 2050.”

For the front, very obvious typology hierarchy are applied, since it’s very informative, so I tried to you layers to emphasize on data. Whilst for the back, its referring to how rapid urbanization leads to rural population decline. was inspired by the data curve, which then visualized it with my typography.

Post Pandemic Cafeteria

The post pandemic era was the main inspiration in creating this project, where it allows designers to reflect and innovate new ways of how customers in a cafeteria circulate and use the space, as well as to create designs that can suit different consequences and settings for a longevity purpose. This project mainly focuses on the documentation of a technical drawing set and materiality, materials that are easy to clean are extremely important for this project as it can decrease the bacteria survival rate.
