SPRING 2019 Prof. M. Bardina
The studio aims to provide an introduction of the methodology of preservation of historically significant buildings and urban environments, as well as the more interventional adaptive conservation, rehabilitation, and reuse. Students will be asked to think broadly and consider planning, zonning, and other techniques as a way to supplement traditional conservation and/or preservation methods, with particular attention to the concepts of identify of place and public policy as both a limitation and opportunity.
SPRING 2020 Prof. W. Méndez & Prof. C. Quiñones
Through this Experimental Design Studio, students will comprehend the three key concepts that must be present in every building stucture: stability (framing), strength/stiffnes (materiality), and economy (systems). The elaborated project must demonstrate skillfulness in the application of those key concepts and at the same time be perceived as a cohesive response to the architectural problems.
FALL 2021 Prof. G. Berrios & Prof. F. Pabón
The design studio aims to provide students with a holistic undestanding of the ideological, architectural, socio-economical, physical and technological aspects inherent to the organization and morphology of human communities through the implementation of a fully developed landscape architecture project. Students shall exposed to the inherent qualities and implications of the contextual environment, the topology of the organic canvas, the concept of presence and scale, flow and circulation, ecosystems and the sense of awareness and sensibility towards the natural environment and its juxtaposition within the human realm.
SPRING 2022 Prof. L. Camaño
The Design Studio investigates the concepts of urban fabric (zonning, context and boundaries), scapes (perception, verticality and landmarks), density (urban enclosure, mass, equilibrium), weave (circulation patterns, nodes, pockets, time sequencing, dislocations and connections), habitat (pedestrian/vehicular realms, work, live andplay settings) and ritual (gathering, clustering, social consciousness, culture and human scale) intrinsic to the analysis, study and creation of urban and architectural environment in today’s society.
202: Analytical Design
II:
Location: Ponce, Puerto Rico
Built Area: 38,500 sq. ft.
Project Type: Urban Year: Spring 2019
The objective of the project was to incorporate a program that can be joined to the historic Matorell’s House. The building consists of apartments for students, restaurant, art studio and more. Being the stakeholder Antonio Martorell, a Puerto Rican artist. The concept is Art and Life (Ars & Vita in Latin).
Art has been the universal language since the beginning of humanity. Taking the concept to work also with life. Specifically in the stages of growth. Working with inclined roofs to give the illusion of lightness and also these are staggered in different heights.
Art is incorporated not only through the use of color and harmony, but also to offer two local artists to transmit their art on two specific walls on the facade of the building.
ARAD 302: Experimental Design Studio II: Structural Framework and Assemblages
Location: Ponce, Puerto Rico
Site Area: 20,486 sq. ft.
Coordinates: x: 180778.9, y: 219852.7455
Project Type: Urban Year: Spring 2020
The concept is to help revitalize the historic center of Ponce. This through the development of a structure that coexists with the urban context, bringing new architectural shapes and innovative materials for the area.
The shape of the building opens towards the Plaza Las Delicias, creating a connection with it and the inner center of the building. This center intends to function as a dynamic “open-air” space waiting for the offices. Creating a plaza where people have contact with nature and reducing the ambient temperature of the structure.
- Located in front of the Plaza Las Delicias.
- Mixed-use area
- Site located between ho tels & commercial area.
Location: Lajas, Puerto Rico
Site Area: 159,334 sq. ft
Built Area: Aprox. 80, 300 sq. ft.
Project Type: Ecological landscape restoration Year: Fall 2021
The idea is to develop a Wetlands and Mangroves Natural Park / Reserve that seeks to connect with Plaza San Pedro Tato in La Parguera. Create or strengthen an ecological corridor that connects wetlands, mangroves and the coast. That also invites the community to connect with nature and protect it.
- Strategic location: very visited place, tourist and scientific attraction area.
- Area of great diversity of ecosystems: variety of flora and fauna; native, endemic and some in danger of extinction.
- Connect the different ecosystems for their restoration and conservation.
- Promote environmental sensitivity.
- Lack of public access to the coast.
- High temperatures, contamination and problems with sargassum.
Ecological corridor that combines the conservation of the environment and social well-being.
To keep the wetlands intact.
The rings will be form by plataforms that connects with the plaza and docks.
Will surround the different ecosystems + bikeway. They reach the coast, rescuingtheviewtothesea.
To protect the new nature reserve, the development of an ecological center is proposed.
Which is a visitor center that educates people about nature and the environment. It is usually located within a protected area.

ARAD 402: Contextual Design Studio II: UrbanScapesandCommunities
Location: Aguada, Puerto Rico
Site Area: 52,150 sq. ft.
Project Type: Preserve of historical industrial area Year: Spring 2022
After an analysis of the connection of public spaces in the town of Aguada, it is concluded that it lacks of public spaces and pedestrian paths. What causes abandoned spaces or areas that do not prosper. The Coloso Central seems to show potential to be an important public space, but it don’t have a pedestrian or connection to the PR-417 road, which is the main entrances to the town.
- Lack of connection between cultural or tourist spaces .
- Lacks gathering / entertainment spaces
- Lack of a continuous sidewalk and of a designated bike path
- Abandoned or not in use properties
- Reinforce agriculture and it’s importance.
- Preserve the historical industrial aesthetics of Coloso Central.
- Turn Coloso into a cultural and tourist district preserving its agricultural character.
The main strategy is to turn Central Coloso into a tourist cultural district, creating a pedestrian and bike path that connects the new district with Calle #417 (the main street of thetownofAguada).Aswellas renovating the Old Way to Coloso to make a vehicular access.
The idea is to preserve the industrial aesthetics and the agricultural characteristic of the area. Making a structure that works like a machine, this through aquaponic research. Which not only produces, but also educates its visitors (agritourism).
