WINTER 2015

DID YOU HEAR THE LEGEND OF MAHIRI TAKAI?

A man once caught in the grip of death, broke out and decided to live unrestrained. Marked with a calling that even sickness couldn’t stop– it was, in fact, on his deathbed where his fashion industry takeover began. Mahiri is the Founder of Men’s Fashion Week Dallas and Men’s Fashion International. He penned these concepts to hand off to someone else, unsure of how far his own runway would stretch. Now, through the power of the almighty God, he strides with deliberate intention to fulfill his own final wishes. He’s more alive than ever! In 2014, Mahiri Takai launched the first ever Men’s Fashion Week of Dallas inviting the big and small players from the world fashion stage to come and present their work. With uncanny favor, he received sponsorships from Tesla and Toni & Guy who came to join in on the grand event. Wanting to showcase local and international creators that rarely get a shot,

he gave a platform to designers and stylists from as far as NYC and Tokyo. In March 2016 he will follow up MFWD with the second iteration that will include rising designers like Laquan Smith & Alexis Arjona (NYC) and S. Haynes & Gege Gilzene (Dallas). Mahiri encourages the fashion players to expect what has never been done before in this city – and we will.

long lines and black & white expressions of a deeper spiritual truth: God is in everything, you are either for him or against him. This handmade collection is about abiding in love and is really an artistic interpretation of Mahiri’s spirituality. The full collection will be available March 2016 at Macy’s stores and mensfashioninternational.com.

When asked what are the steps to executing a vision, he explains the five phases of success. 1 – If you have a vision, write it down. 2 – Accept it as reality. 3Look around and see people of greatness and believe that if it is happening for them it is attainable for you. 4 – Plant seeds everyday, work. 5 – Wait and you will surely reap the harvest. Mahiri Takai is in his planting season, laying the foundation of his new men’s fashion line: The M.E Collection. The launch happened in New York at Studio 123 on September 12th evoking fashion wear with

This is just the beginning for Mahiri Takai. He is paving the way for a unique experience in the international fashion industry and he is unashamed to do it all for the glory of God. He credits his wife and partner Chearonne Allen for her influence and support in his life, noting that he would not have survived or be forging his mark into history if it had not been for her unwavering support. KEEPIN’ IT KINGDOM ED

Staying Saved in a Godless Culture Contributed by: ED (Kingdom Shawty)

perspectives and influence upon the issues are.

“How do I stay saved in this godless culture?” is a question that I’m often asked as a Youth Pastor and as I’m out in the community representing the Kingdom. In the Bible there is a book entitled Ecclesiastes. In it, the wise King Solomon tells us in chapter 1 that “what has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun”. Since The Creator created all of creation and time too, we must first understand that the issues of this modern day pop culture are very similar to the issues during the time that Jesus walked the earth, as well as in the beginning. The difference is simply that the technology that we have and the tools that we use are now different. Yesterday, there was sex, drugs, murder, lies, political upheavals, law enforcement’s abuse of the citizenry, wars, racial divides, cheating, vanity, theological showdowns and more. The headline issues of today can be found in those same categories of yesterday. In this year alone, America has had to wrestle with immigration politics, police brutality, same-gender marriage, deflate-gate, societal rights of transgender people, conflict over state flag symbolism, children killing their parents and more. These matters are not profound in themselves; but our ever-evolving

The question that I pose to those who ask me how to stay saved in a godless culture is: “Could it be that the culture is not godless, but rather that it has too many gods?” A god can be made of anything you elevate above the almighty God of the universe. Look around, for many people social media has become their god. For others it may be their jobs, possessions or relationships. How you spend your time and where you devote you heart is an act of worship, and in this day and age we are worshiping all the wrong things. We live in a society where in general, folks turn to whatever is the immediate fix for their temporary issue and that remedy can begin to form a god in their life. Many turn to prescription medicine for healing but never develop their voice of faith to speak healing to themselves and others. Some turn to ungodly means of paying their bills versus utilizing The Lord’s principles of being good stewards of the income that they have and living below their means. Making a quick dollar becomes god versus patience, budgeting and rationing. In order to stay saved in this culture, we have to both individually and collectively decide which god we will serve and ultimately turn our lives over to its ways, rule and instruction in covenant. In any city, state, business, hood or community you can find whatever god you are

seeking. But the one and only true God yearns to come alive within you. Day after day we can chase from one god to the next or we can choose to serve the Most High God consistently and receive the rewards that he has promised for us. Whatever god you choose, there will be rewards. What do you mean? Well, I’m glad that you asked. When John turns himself over to drugs, over time he will begin to look, smell, feel and act like it. Everything about him, including his behavior, will be aligned with the drug god that is ruling him. He will most likely be untimely to meetings, often incoherent, aggressive and shallow. The rewards of the god that is ruling him will be visible to all. The same would be true of John if he turned himself over to the things of The Lord. He would have an inward glow that could be seen on the outside. His outlook on life and all of its issues would be from a priestly and kingly perspective. He would look very open, inviting and be presentable. Girls would probably be attracted to both his spirit and his success. I’m just being real! Now what if John were wavering between two gods? Imagine if John were struggling with committing to the drugs or turning himself over to The Lord, his actions would be inconsistent. One day he may be too turned up! He may be out at an event acting very irrational, loud, vulgar or violent. Yet, the following week he may be leading a Bible study at church and coming across like a good and upstanding member of The Body of Christ. These characteristics would not be in

9• line with the manner of Christ because Hebrew 13:8 says, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Let’s take a moment to examine ourselves. Ask yourself, “Am I being consistent in my life? In what areas am I being inconsistent? Why am I being inconsistent in those areas? Am I serving a different god in that area? Do I want to change that? What could I do to change that? Is God first, second or third in any or all of those areas?” Our answers to these questions will determine if and how we stay saved and live godly lives in this culture of too many gods. So I will say to you what I say to all who ask me that question: I don’t have the answer, but you do and it’s in your power to be in covenant with The God of Yeshua (Jesus the Christ). For those who have never received Christ through the repentance of

sin and the confession of Jesus’s death, burial and resurrection, I invite you to say the following words aloud: “Dear Father in heaven, I come to you in the name of Yeshua. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived. I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son, Yeshua the Christ, shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in Your Holy Word, Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Yeshua from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Yeshua as the Lord of my soul! With my heart, I believe that God raised Yeshua from the dead. This very moment I accept Yeshua as my own personal

WINTER 2015

Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Thank you, Yeshua, for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. I thank you Yeshua that your grace never leads to license, but rather it always leads to repentance. Therefore Lord Yeshua, transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself. Thank you, Yeshua, for dying for me and giving me eternal life. AMEN.” Please find a ministry within your community to attend so that you can begin to learn more about yourself and the God within you. Hit me up and I will direct you to one. I want you to know that I love you and I’d love to further our dialogue. Reach out to me at @KingdomShawty on both Instagram & Twitter or via email at thekingdombrand@gmail.com. #KeepItKingdomShawty

THE GOOD FIGHT by Nikki Candler

Rashad Coulter is a professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion with a winning record of 5-1 with 5 KO’s and a boxing

record of 3-1 with 2 KO’s. As a young man growing up in Newton, North Carolina, Rashad remembers getting into reckless street fights, partying every weekend, drinking, and being irresponsible with his life. His battles he contributes to unrestrained anger that he faced as a child. Then in 1993 Rashad became a fan of MMA. One day while he was watching a fight, he told himself “I bet I can beat one of those dudes on T.V”. Not understanding the power of God’s ability to transform a life through divine purpose, he took up the craft of boxing; channeling his anger into something he did well. Twenty-two years later Rashad now fights the good fight in and out of the ring. He speaks to youth regularly sharing his journey and encourages them to be champions for Christ! Rather than seeking his own fame or esteem, Rashad desires to give all the glory to God.

Rashad *Daywalker* Coulter

Q- When have you been most satisfied in life? “I am a single father of two boys, Jayden (9) and Jayvian (10). When I finally got full custody of my boys in 2007. It wasn’t about child support. It wasn’t about going out and partying anymore. From there on out I was all about my kids and that’s all I wanted. They are where I find my happiness.

Q- What does it mean for you to be a fighter? “You know, we all fight in life, we are all just fighting different things. I just choose to channel my fighting in an area that I am the best in. When you put God first, he gives you the desires of your heart. Losers don’t get a microphone and since I choose to put God first, he can trust me to spread his word

13 • and he can trust that I will give all glory to him. Therefore, I believe he allows me to win because he can trust me with victories, trust me with spreading his word and trust that I will bring people to him. “

Q- What separates you from every other fighter in your division? “I claim Dominion! I don’t think a lot of other fighters understand that. The day before a fight, I walk the ring or cage and claim dominion and take dominion over that area that I will stepping in the next day. I’m not like other fighters because most of the time other fighters are fighting to prove a point or fighting for fame. I fight to use it as a platform to get me where God wants me. I don’t plan on fighting for a long time. I also use fighting to get me a follower base so I can spread what God is doing in my life. I believe it’s my platform into evangelism and public speaking. God has already led me to speak to those at my church “Covenant Church” in Carollton, TX.

Q-Who is your biggest inspiration? “My Pops and my kids. My Pops was a single father and raised 3 kids (2 sisters & me) by himself. Then I look at my kids and no matter what I do in life, right or wrong, my kids look at me as their hero and I can’t let them down. They inspire me because 1. They want to be like me and 2. They value what I do as far as church goes and the free time we get to spend together.”

Q- What is your favorite strike or submission to use in any fight? “Whichever one knocks em out! I love the right though… straight

WINTER 2015

right, overhand right or the uppercut; that’s my specialty.”

into them. I just pray for healing and a fast recovery.”

Q- If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?

Q- What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?

“KIMBO SLICE!! Kimbo was actually the person I was watching while I was sitting around, drinking and smoking one day saying I could beat somebody up. I believe it would be a VERY good and interesting fight. I also think I would knock him out!”

Q-Can you explain what it means for you to always pray with all of your opponents after each fight and victory? “I allow God to use me. In that atmosphere people don’t expect you to speak about God. They think that it’s all barbaric and that you have to hate the person you are fight; but in all reality, I’m not out there to just hurt somebody. I honestly believe that God allows me to be so successful to show people, the crowds and fan base, that because you say God’s name or you have on clothes that represent God or have tattoos with scripture or you give God all the glory for everything in life, that doesn’t make you weak. It actually makes you stronger! It’s kind of like a cheat code when you want to win a game. You look up the code… Same concept with God. When you find him and begin to live for his glory, you can’t lose, no matter what! So for me, I defeat my opponent, then speak life

“I want people to understand I am good person and I want them to say ‘you know what, he’s not your average fighter.’ I feel this is my first ministry; my first calling as far as stepping into what God has for me. When it’s all said and done, I want people to just be able to say ‘because of him’ or ‘if it wasn’t for him’ I would have never known how God could work.”

Q-Have you ever thought about what person you can relate to most in the bible? I find a lot of David in myself. For one, David was a warrior. For a long time I struggled with fornication and I struggled with women. In the bible, David is the same way but his heart for the Lord is amazing. He was also repentant; even though he did a lot of wrong things, God could use him because he knew he was strong and strong-minded. I believe I relate to that a lot because yes, I’ve made many mistakes, I’ve gone down the wrong path as well, but God knows my heart. Now my only mission is to do what he has called me to do.

Shy Speaks by Natalie Nicole Straight out of Oak Cliff, Texas, Shy Speaks has emerged as one of the most passionate hip-hop and spoken word artists in the country with indisputable skills as a singer, speaker, songwriter and budding actress. Shy Speaks comes from a place of poverty and struggle; born fatherless to a drug-addicted mother, the challenges of her life started early. It was said that she would be mentally unstable and developmentally challenged; as a child it seemed that the odds were declared against her. But God had a much different plan for her life. Shy credits her family members Trina and Rose who

took her in and influenced her life, helping shape the woman she has become today. In school Shy gravitated to books, overcoming the labels of her earlier deficiencies. As an adolescent she proved her poise, intellect and distinct qualities. At age nine Shy and her family moved from the inner city to the suburban area to obtain a higher quality education. As result, she gained a dichotomy of understanding for both urban and suburban life, which she now uses in her art. The foundation of religious faith was set throughout her childhood and by age twelve

she could actually feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. As Shy entered college though, she aimed for more spiritual and professional growth. Although she had received salvation as a young girl, she realized that God didn’t have lordship in any part of her life. At age eighteen Shy rededicated her life to Jesus Christ and his favor began to abound in her life. The stage name “I Shy now Speaks” is a double entendre and reflection of her lyricism

15 • and creative mind. “Shy” is reflective of the timid adolescent girl of her childhood and “Speaks” is the woman who grew to learn and embrace her gifts in the arts. Influenced by Missy Elliot’s playful entertaining style, Lauren Hill’s poetically conscious and activist approach, and MC Lyte’s distinctive voice, Shy Speaks has captivated the ears of may audiences. If you haven’t heard of her yet, you will soon. She has worked with some of the biggest gospel artist in the industry today including the Grammy award-winning artists Lecrae and Kirk Franklin. Her album releases include “Duo Art Collective”, “Addicted”, and most recently “Invited” released June 2015. Her entrancing tone and lyrics are expressed best on the songs “Literacy Now”, “Heaven”, and “P vs. R”! This EP creates a full vision of being invited to a relationship. “We live in a great invitation!” says Shy. “God is a gentleman, so to speak. He is not making anybody come to him; he just gives the invitation. We only have one responsibility and that is to RSVP.” Her mission within her music is to infuse positivity and spirituality into the urban culture. “Today there is no good and bad music; no Ying and yang. It’s all just ratchet music. By

ARTIST. POET. SPEAKER. Shy Amos, also known as ShySpeaks, is an American hip hop and spoken word artist, singer, speaker, songwriter and budding actress. With her soulful voice, thoughtful lyrics and irrepressible confidence Shy is winning fans from San Francisco to the UK and nations in between. Today, ShySpeaks is hailed as having one of the rarest, most interchangeable voices of her generation. Her rhymes are brilliant, spiritual and introspective; she’s on another level. Simply put, ShySpeaks is renaissance! As evident in her mission, “…to treat the words artist, advocate, and activist as one in the same”, the female lyricist is expanding her catalog of inspirational music and poetry to showcase a fresh, universal sound. Shy is a native of Dallas, TX. It was there that she found her VOICE through oratorical contest, among her musically-inclined family, and like so many musical icons before her, in the church she grew up in

creating a sound wave that inspires other women and artist to do the same, this will restore the balance in urban music.” If you haven’t seen Shy Speaks perform live, it is a must see! Shy blends the energy learned from her theatrical training with her poignant lyrical style and after each performance the listener walks away with a clearer picture of the beautiful spirit that is Shy Speaks. No matter what talent you encounter, Shy Speaks’ presence leaves a stain on your heart, mind and soul and you are moved by the passion of her message. When asked why she has devoted her life to inspiring women and using her gifts for the Lord, she responds, “God has called me to be wealthy with integrity, love, faith, joy and more. I’m trying to create a counter culture. You just have to be obedient to your call.” Learn More about Shy Speaks and Download her Music at www.shyspeaks.com

Kingdom Marriage

How two leaders are advancing the kingdom as one

Interview by Nick and Ferrell Fellows No marriage is perfect, but Raymond and Brook Eneas have a relationship to model. Ten years strong and they exhibit all of the biblical characteristics of a successful marriage: love, respect, and unity. Still, what transcends it all is their commitment to put Christ at the foundation of everything they do. Together as partners they command numerous businesses, head a church, travel the world as motivational speakers, and homeschool two young gentlemen in training (Chancellor & Jaiden). If you want to know how they do it all, their abundant life is made from a recipe of faith, endless support of one another, obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading and walking out the principles of the bible daily. It’s what Brook describes as “Incredible Favor” that has allowed them to

flourish in their union. They have a mantle of international ministry leadership that was laid upon them in a special ordination ceremony by the late Dr. Myles Munroe just 7 days before he was tragically killed in a plane crash. Now, as they walk out their purpose together, Dr. Munroe’s legacy is still forging ahead. In a sit down interview in Orlando, FL, my husband and I relished in their presence and learned wisdom on how couples can live life dynamically while advancing the Kingdom of God.

On a whim I took a youth group to a conference and Raymond was in town serving at that conference as a youth leader. At the time, I had made a vow to God not to date until it was time; I was so focused on what I had to do I was really blinded to him, but when he got on stage I could tell the presence of God was with him and that made him memorable. We didn’t talk for a year and then we reconnected on a phone call and from that point he just wouldn’t stop calling.” (Laughing)

How did you two meet?

R: “When we first met I knew that there was something incredibly special about Brook. I was traveling with Dr. Monroe doing ministry. We both were focusing on being by ourselves and being in God. I was doing Hip Hop Gospel, speaking and

B: “I was a student at Florida State University finishing my masters and serving in ministry at the church I was attending.

21 • teaching on international borders. I was used to women chasing me. Then when God connected us on a phone call, for the first time in my life I heard the spirit say, ‘now it’s time to chase’ and I realized there was no way I was going to let her off the phone after that.”

Raymond, how did you know that Brook was the woman to marry? R: “We dated for 9 months before we engaged. It was different. I just knew. We came from totally different backgrounds. I came from the streets of Nassau, Bahamas, one of the poorest neighborhoods. Nothing good was happening. She came from the other side of the spectrum; she was a good girl she didn’t get into any problems. It was an interesting dynamic for us to come together. It was great that we met. We both had a desire for the Lord and he brought us together to do things for him. A lot of people ask ‘how do you know when you’ve found the one?’ It’s something that you can’t describe with words. It’s just a light bulb that turns on; it just hits you. You have to experience it yourself. Now it’s been 10 years of marriage. We’ve grown together in business and ministry. We travel together touching lives. When I’m speaking she’s my #1 fan and supporter. When she’s speaking I’m right there. We have a good balance in how to enjoy life and don’t make life all about ministry, but also about being successful in business and marriage.” B: “I think it’s so important prior to marriage that you really just trust God. There were gentlemen knocking at the door that I thought were husband material. Just because God said no, I walked away. They had everything on the outside, the total package so I thought, but God could see their heart. I want to say to single women out there, whatever God says you just need to do. I’ve been blessed because I believed God, now I don’t have to fabricate my story - He made it authentic.”

You both have a high calling in ministry. How do you serve in leadership and balance your family life? B: “When we initially got married, it was

brand new. I relocated to South Florida, and it was a new city, new marriage, new house… everything was brand new for me. Six months later I was pregnant and I felt the Holy Spirit say ‘you need to stay home with him.’ He (Raymond) didn’t argue at all and that has been a game changer for our family, I was just being obedient to the Holy Spirit. Now years later as its time for my 2nd son to enter Kindergarten, I understand why because when we travel they get to experience life with us. It’s less about balance and more about prioritizing. When we’re busy traveling the world or we’re authoring books they are right there with us. We’ve also learned that our private world has to be private. We’re cautious about time spent away. If I’m going to be involved in anything that pulls me away from my family it needs to be vitally important. We protect family time. I have to be extremely selective because I understand the call on my life. We spend time with long time friends for the most part, but we have intimate space.” R: “One principle that people tend to not think about is if you are spread to thin, eventually you will disappear. Sometimes you want to be everywhere and do everything, but eventually you have to focus on a few things and master those things and make sure you are concentrated and protect the time. You can’t manage time. You can only manage yourself. Time is always moving so you can’t really manage it. But the way you manage yourself will dictate how successful you become. In terms of managing yourself you have understand what is priority. The

WINTER 2015

Kingdom of God should be #1, once you make everything revolve around that, that becomes your foundational base of priority. Whatever we do that has to do with our family, business, or church vision, everything that comes at us has to pass a vision test. If it doesn’t line up with our vision, we don’t need to do it. That’s how we protect our time and create a level of balance and priority.”

Brook, you have a degree in chemistry and molecular biology and a Masters in Public Administration. Additionally, you’ve authored four books with countless other successes. How did being a stay at home mom strengthen you as a wife and a businesswoman? B: “10 years ago my kids were young. Having baby’s and toddlers is a different space and I was at home making sure my house was in order. A lot of women don’t understand their priority. If you move into something prematurely, you’ll end up in a place that you’re not prepared for. At that time, I sat and wrote in my journal about what I wanted to do and I dreamed. I read books and when the time was right I was prepared. As a woman I’ve learned there’s nothing wrong with chasing dreams, but the timing is important. My kids help

to balance the ambition that I have. Had I not had them, I might be on the other side of the world helping orphans. But God knew I needed more to my life than just doing… doing...doing, but just being. In Utero, we got the diagnosis that my son would be born with Down syndrome, but my husband refused to believe the report. He said, ‘doctor I respect your opinion, but I don’t believe you.’ He gave us options to abort the baby or to have several procedures, but my husband, he stood on the word of God and I latched on to his faith. Every time we went to the doctor, the probability of his illness continued to decline down to zero and that experience early in our marriage taught me how to stand in faith through my husband.” R: “As a man you have to learn to have faith for your family when they don’t have faith. As you get higher and higher in the things of God your faith will always be tested at different levels. You also have to recognize when your spouse is operating as a prophet or prophetess. You have to submit to what God is saying through them and put your pride down.” B: “Being a stay at home mom also taught me the power of prayer. When we’ve had disagreements I understood at times, like Esther, I had to pray my way through. When I couldn’t get to his head, I knew the Lord could get to his heart. I would pray to God to talk to him in a way that he would receive and I saw that happen many times.” R: “Pride seems to always come for men,

but you have to learn when your wife is operating as a prophetess versus just being your wife. When they are operating as a prophetess that’s God speaking through them and you have to remove your pride and submit because that’s not them but the word of God. That can come through your child as well, you have to be able to be sensitive when He’s even speaking through the donkey.”

The two of you were ordained in ministry under the headship of Dr. Myles Munroe. How did you develop that relationship and what is your mandate of ministry? R: “I literally grew up in the ministry. Dr. Munroe mentored me. I was raised and groomed in his ministry. I was his operations manager for 7 years in south Florida. I traveled with him all over the world. I’m not just somebody who was associated with him, but a true son who worked alongside him and learned a lot over many years. Of course his death was a shock to us. The ordination by him was no ordinary ordination. We were supposed to be ordained months before, but he kept pushing it back because he wanted it to be at a special time. Before the ordination it was the 1st time even had the opportunity to speak before him and before the church. We were the last two people to be ordained by him. The Sunday before his death he ordained us and a week later his plane crashed. He passed that mantel to us. It’s hard to think about what happened. It’s more than just an opportunity to say I want to be a pastor; it’s an opportunity to carry on a legacy. We are looking forward to what the future holds in our church (The Church of Compassion) and making sure people understand the gospel of the Kingdom. For us, our mandate is to teach as many people about the Kingdom of God. The first statement Jesus made was “the kingdom of god is at hand.” That’s what we’ll teach, the kingdom - but on the basis of love.” Brook, You’re the Author of the Book ‘Rock Your Stage.’ You are a very dynamic woman and you have many stages in life. How do you rock them all?

B: “The reason I can rock my stage is because of my relationship with God. My personal relationship with God is my first priority really. I have an inner conversation with God all day. It’s the foundation, the root of the tree and everything sprouts through that. I listen to music and God talks to me. I can feel him and sense him. I can also sense people emotionally, which has come through refining the voice of God. My second role in life is a wife, becoming one with my husband. A lot of women try and become one with their kids and that causes a lot of marital issues. My husband is the king of the castle and so as a leader in the home, I always defer to him. Unless I have his blessing I don’t move forward. I’m a dreamer. I have a lot going on but I submit all my goals to his leadership. Even accepting speaking engagements. It’s submission, that’s what it is. Thirdly, I’m a Mother. My goal is making sure my kids are well equipped so that they are gentlemen. I want to them to learn how to treat women, how to be wealthy, but be grounded in purpose. I homeschool them so I do all their lessons and involve them with a co-op in the community. Fourthly, I’m an Entrepreneur/CEO. My company is Brook Marie Eneas and I do three things: I’m a Fitness Coach, Author & Speaker. I train women for pageants and NBA/NFL dancers. I have girls who are extremely confident and girls on the opposite spectrum where it’s all vanity and selfish ambition. My message is always purpose. Most girls struggle with the way that they look. I work with some of the most attractive girls, but they all have something in their heart. If you’re not content and you haven’t discovered God you’re going to have unrest. I make sure not to be offensive, I just carry a light within me. I can’t change them so I meet them where they are and they respect the light. And finally, I serve alongside my husband in ministry. My place there is to be an example to show them how to lead in the world. I show them how to cross over and be successful in places where people don’t look like you. I help women in ministry learn how to rock their own stage and use their talents outside of the church.”

Raymond, You have written a sermon series called, ‘Understanding the Power of the Kingdom.’ How would you explain the importance of the Kingdom? R: “Jesus came and the first thing he said was “the Kingdom of God is coming” and he said” ‘ the kingdom of God is in you.” That implies right of the bat that you are royalty. If he said ‘Seek first the kingdom of God’ then the #1 thing we should be after is the kingdom. The question is: What is the kingdom? The kingdom is really God’s philosophy, his concepts, his government, his laws. Whatever laws you are operating by that creates the culture of your life. If you’re operating by God’s laws, his kingdom will begin to work in your life. One of the greatest revelations you have to understand is that the kingdom is a country. There are so many people who don’t even know that the kingdom exists, so they aren’t looking for it. The bible says we are citizens of this country. From birth you were taught that you are an American citizen, but no one taught you that you are a Kingdom citizen. You have been programmed to be an American citizen. It only shows up when you start to operate in the culture that he designed for you. If you want to see the kingdom in its fullness, obey the king (Jesus). When you obey him its revealed to you through revelation. It’s not

revealed until you really want it. People think they are going to find it in money, in relationships, but it’s when you obey the laws of God. It shows up. If you’re not living the kingdom culture, it’s not going to show up. If you are a Christian and you’re not living the culture, you’ll never experience the kingdom. Righteousness, peace and joy and the holy ghost is the kingdom of God- until you have a real relationship with the Holy Spirit, you can’t experience these things the way you really should.” B: “It’s a hard thing to believe in what you can’t see. The provision; the miracles. It’s going to require a level of faith. When you’re able so submit your will to His you’re able to walk in a whole new level of life. Most people can’t do it. Only a few find their way to it. The bible says, ‘only a few are chosen. But really, only a few are willing.” R: “The kingdom is the only message that requires you to live it for its power to show up. And when the power shows up, it’s undeniable. If you live this thing for real, you will seek it until you find it and you will never stop seeking. No matter what happens, you still believe. For a lot of Christians, the Kingdom of God is just a cliché, but it’s really that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, throw me in the fire and I’ll still believe.”

Can you envision a culture with no barriers of race, gender, ethnicity or religion? Imagine a culture that’s first mission is to share the real love of God; a place that whole-heartedly lives by and practices the values and morals of Christ on a daily basis; where everyone walks and moves together in unity through the love of God. To some this kind of culture may seem far-fetched or even impossible but to one man of faith this culture is a reality that he has set in motion through a ministry he calls – The Christ Culture. Van E. Stripling is a Texas-born activist, politician, and founder of Christ Culture Clothing Brand. After being saved through the love of Jesus Christ in 2010 Van eagerly wanted to introduce people to the same love that God had shown him. After praying about it for a period of time Van says that what was given to him was two words: Christ Culture - based simply from the scripture Ephesians 5:2- “Live a life filled with love following the example of Christ.” This verse is easier read than lived out some may argue, but not to Van. He insists that the world makes it much more difficult than it has to be. Van strongly believes that it’s not religion or

WINTER 2015

denomination or not even labels that we place on ourselves that make us Christ followers. Instead it’s about having a true covenant and committed relationship with God, choosing everyday to live that commitment out according to his word, while loving one another as He has commanded us to do. To Van this is what the culture of Christ looks like in reality.

Even though at times politics can be filled with discrimination, bigotry, and religious oppression, Van feels that a person’s faith should never be hidden. “God gave us government and we can not afford to shy away from politics and certainly never ever shy away from your faith.” Van insists we are called to be active as we are called to remain faithful to God’s word.

While traveling the world serving in the military, Van became an enthusiast of culture, enjoying the various foods, music and fashions of the different cultures around the world. Van also took notice to the barriers that were broken and the people impacted throughout the different places, simply through his enjoyment of their culture. These different experiences made Van realize that over every culture is being enjoyed - whether it is music, food, pop culture or others. Still, the ultimate culture that people need to enjoy is the culture of Jesus Christ. Van states, “He has given us His blue print in His word, now all we have to do is embrace it culturally, walk it out and make it our lifestyle daily.”

Van’s ultimate purpose in life is to share God’s true love. He emphasizes the importance of understanding that there are still people out there that don’t know God. “There are people who want to know God, but don’t know how to make the connection. Through Christ Culture Brand and movement people can make that connection. They can get to know Christ for themselves. They can join the movement and see an example of a culture living out the lifestyle of Christ.” Van’s mission is to create opportunities for believers to live according to the Christ Culture way of life and share it with the world!

As a politician Van is just as passionate and actively involved in the community.

Pyr ex x

Imagine being chased by God. No matter where you go, no matter what you do, He just won’t go away. You’ve made every mistake that a man can make, you’re a career drug dealer addicted to cocaine and pills, you’ve been to prison five times, you’ve ruined every chance you’ve ever gotten, and hurt everyone who has ever loved you. Still, God won’t stop pursuing you. Even when everyone else in the world regards you as a menace to society, God calls you his child. He knows that if he can change your heart, then he can use you to change the world. This isn’t a story from gangsta movie. This is the life that Christian rapper Pyrexx lived, growing up on the roughest streets in Houston, Texas. His story was wrong from the beginning. He started selling crack,

cocaine, and weed as a young kid. He grew up in a house of turmoil; his father was an alcoholic who was abusive to everyone in his home. Pyrexx recalls a time when he heard his mother scream from the living room. As a child he ran in to see what was going on and witnessed his father ramming his mother’s head into the washing machine and slamming it down on her face. Then his father turned and started choking Pyrexx and his brother and he couldn’t do anything to stop it. As a teen he joined the Gangster Disciples gang and his MO became dealing drugs, running from police, and living the life of a criminal. “I’ve done it all” he confesses. He caught his first felony at the age of 16 stealing cars on the north side of Houston and caught his first drug case at the age of 17. That sent him to prison on a 3-year term. Every time Pyrexx would get released, he would go back to the same reckless lifestyle and get thrown right back in jail. It was a never-ending pattern of destruction that

was going to leave him dead or in prison for the rest of his life. During one of his prison terms, Pyrexx lost his mother to cancer and he didn’t even get a chance to attend her funeral. He was mad at God for a long time, until a Christian rapper and prison minister named Tre9 visited and performed a Christian rap music concert at the Clements unit where Pyrexx was jailed. Pyrexx says, “I wasn’t really feeling it and didn’t really want to go; when you hear someone say Christian rap it’s a turn off, but I went ahead and went.” When he saw Tre9 doing the same type of music he’d done as an upcoming rap artist in Houston, same type of roughness, but inspirational and worshiping Jesus, he says, “My life changed forever!” Tre9 built a relationship with Pyrexx while he was an inmate and continued to write him letters about God’s love and encouraged him to change his life for Christ. Pyrexx had known who God was throughout his life, but didn’t really have a personal relationship with him. He’d been

27 • introduced to Jesus and accepted him into his life at age 11 while at a bible camp he attended with his grandmother, but only because it was what others were doing. He says when he would try to do right, people looked at him crazy and so his pride prevented him from following God even though he wanted to in his heart. Pyrexx was as stubborn as anyone can be, but Tre9 was persistent. Working as a messenger from God, he continued to pursue Pyrexx no matter how hard he resisted the gospel. He fought together with him like a brother to help him beat his addictions, and break the negative cycles he had established in his life. Through his encouragement, he took Pyrexx back to prison, but this time it was to share his story and minister the gospel to other

inmates. During his prison ministry, Pyrexx had his first experience with the power of the Holy Spirit. When he left he was in tears at how God had used him to reach so many inmates who needed to be saved desperately. Since that experience, Pyrexx has fully devoted his life to the work of the Lord. He formerly rapped for the Houston rap group ABN, but now he uses his lyrics to spread the good news of the gospel of Christ that brought him salvation from his past life. As a Christian rapper, Pyrexx travels around the U.S witnessing many give their lives over to Jesus. For so many years of his life he was a Gangster Disciple, but now he is a disciple for Christ. Every Tuesday night in the 5th ward of Houston Pyrexx hosts a street ministry event called Hip Hop Hope where he preaches the

WINTER 2015

gospel as well as offers baptisms to anyone who wants to be saved. No Pyrexx isn’t the typical church boy type. At first glance, you may think God is the farthest thing from his mind. He’s a white boy tatted from head to toe, and he doesn’t look like a Christian. But then you have to ask yourself, what does a Christian “look” like? Far too often we judge people based on their appearance versus what the bible says should be the measure of a man: his fruit. Rapper Pyrexx is a man with a complex past, until God came into his life and made him a new creation. The world hasn’t been the same ever since. Finding Purpose by Audrey Williams

It has been said that we often mistake passion for purpose. Passion could be something you love to do; the gift or talent you have that is done with no effort. It’s done with ease and takes nothing from you when you do it. Your passion can be a driving force in your life because of the joy it brings you to share it with others. Purpose is what you strive for with every effort of your being from day to day. We all want to know our purpose. Why we were created and what we were created to accomplish. Finding it for some is a life long journey and for others that know their purpose, it is the source of their life’s fulfillment. Warning: I didn’t say a life free of mistakes, pitfalls, or curveballs! I simply said a life lived fulfilling God’s will for your life. Purpose lies in wait of you! I challenge you to sift through the ashes of all the things that have been through the furnace of your life and see what’s left. Look thoroughly and check for what was always leftover of you after every shift (major or minor). Although trial and transition came, what was still visible and carried over into the next season? If this particular thing made it out of every battle untouched and you still can accomplish it, and it brings back a priceless return in your heart as it blesses others, then my dear it sounds like you need to introduce yourself. “Hello Purpose”! I’ve longed for you! As a young outgoing woman I searched high and low for what God had created me for. I walked through my 20’s and 30’s enjoying life carelessly, yet there was a deep tugging in my soul for more. I tried numerous jobs, attempted a couple of different trades, pushed my way through a few doors, but every opportunity was short lived. I couldn’t understand. I was saddened deeply by watching everyone else’s life seem to prosper and grow. Friends and family were succeeding in their dreams and plans yet I couldn’t move. I felt like I couldn’t get past the brick wall in front of me. I felt that my life would be so different or better if I could only get to the other side. Needless to say I made a heap of bad decisions that ultimately lead me to the pit. I hit

rock bottom. I was tired of searching. I didn’t find fulfillment in anything! While being lost and confused I wandered my way right into the predestined wilderness that my Heavenly Father had prepared for me. Even in this unfamiliar place in my finances, family, and job, I still had my mind on the brick wall that stood in my way. I wanted what was on the other side! So as I journeyed with determination I ran right into the desert from the wilderness. The dry place! Nothing living. Nothing moving. No water. NOTHING! I had nothing. I was completely empty inside so I surrendered myself and finally found contentment. Now I could see things a bit clearer and one of the first things I saw clearly was that there never was a brick wall. It was me. I kept myself from seeing my purpose because of my choices! My purpose was to use the platform God had given me all those years to love and serve the people before me. I wanted more but God says do not despise small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10). I was in the presence of the beginning of my destiny everyday, but blinded by my own ideas of success. I am humbled today to say that I walk in part of my purpose everyday. I have been greatly blessed for 25 years in my trade as a hair stylist to be a blessing to others by not only helping enhance their outwardly beauty, but helping transform the inner beauty. God isn’t finished with me just because my purpose has been revealed. I believe now His will is to show me what was behind all the closed doors and to show what an abundant life looks like when we do it His way! Purpose is right in front of you! How One Champion is Fighting Lupus by Ferrell Fellows

31 •

Interview with: Tiffani Holloway, Omaha ProAm 2015 Body Building Champion Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that causes severe inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body including internal organs, joints and skin. Research estimates that 1.5 million Americans have lupus, particularly targeting women of childbearing age (14-55) and women of color are 2-3 times more likely to develop the disease. The effects of Lupus can range from mild to life threatening, but for every victim it has an extreme impact on their daily lives. Though the disease is prevalent, there is still a lack of awareness and understanding about the condition and how it affects people with the disease. We sit down with Tiffani Holloway, fitness professional and body building champion, to expose Lupus and show how with faith and unrelenting willpower you can fight back!

At what point in your life did you discover you had lupus? “I learned I had lupus October 2014, about a year ago. I was 30, a financial manager at large company, working a full-time career. I had friends, I was hanging out and dating and working out and living the typical life that a young adult lives in what should be the prime of my life. I had started having really bad joint pain, the point where it was hard to walk. I felt it in my elbows, knees and ankles. I went to the medical facility at my job, because I didn’t have a primary care doctor. Being in peak health, I had never had any conditions that warranted me going to the doctor. When I explained my symptoms the doctor initially he dismissed it; he prescribed me over-thecounter ibuprofen. Then a few weeks later, I woke up and I couldn’t walk. The pain was so bad that I went to the hospital and ended up being there for 2 days as they ran blood tests on me. There is no one test that will determine you have lupus. Because of the combination of my symptoms and my blood work, I was diagnosed with Lupus.”

What was it like learning in the prime of your life, a person committed to fitness and a healthy lifestyle, that you were diagnosed with Lupus? “Honestly when I first found out I didn’t know what to think because I didn’t know what lupus was – like most people. I just thought, ‘give me some medicine and make it go away.’ When I started going to the doctor and I started reaching out to other people with the disease, that’s when I realized how serious it was and how my life would probably change. There is no cure for lupus. It can attack your organs (kidneys, lung, and heart) and though it varies from person to person, it’s not uncommon to hear of someone dying of lupus. When I educated myself that’s when I got really nervous.”

What are some of the symptoms and challenges of Lupus? “The symptoms vary from person to person: Achy and swollen joints, numbness and tingling in your hands and feet, skin rash, hair loss, and inflammation in the internal organs. For me, my condition is the inflammation in my joints, skin rash, hair loss, chest pain in my heart and lungs. Doing simple things cause me to pause to sit down and catch my breath. With Lupus, I’m exhausted literally every day all day. Going from a person who used to love to go out and do fun stuff,

WINTER 2015

now I can’t because I’m drained. Everyday life gets frustrating and really hard. About two weeks ago I was trying to walk down the stairs and it literally took me 20 minutes to get down one flight of stairs. I go to the hospital once a month to get treatment, to do blood tests and to make sure my organs are functioning properly. At least five days a month I just can’t go to work. I’m worried about what my employer will think, what will happen to my performance, what will my future career look like?”

Lupus is a disease of flares and remissions where symptoms worsen and you feel ill and then they improve and you feel better. What are the misconceptions regarding your illness? “There is a lack of awareness about the illness altogether, so people don’t understand what it is. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder where your body attacks itself; it can’t tell what’s a good cell or bad cell so it just attacks itself. It is an invisible illness so you can’t physically see what a person is going through; so you just dismiss it. It’s a combination of people not being informed and when you have an invisible illness you look healthy. I can still go to work and hang out, but people can’t see what it took for me to do that. They can’t see the times when I can’t move my arm so I can’t take a shower, or I can’t bend over to put on my heels. They

• 32

don’t even know the effort that it takes to just look normal and act healthy. You have good days and bad days and it’s so unpredictable. Some days I feel like a can run a marathon and other days I feel like I’m going to die. Just because you can’t physically see a person being sick doesn’t mean they aren’t in the fight of their life.”

Why do you think so many people battle this illness in secret? “Most people with lupus don’t want to become a burden to people. You don’t want to explain why you can’t hang out. You don’t want people feeling sorry for you. You just want to try to live a normal life as much as possible. Initially I didn’t tell people, but now I’ve changed my mindset. My goal now is to raise awareness because it impacts so many people.”

Medical professionals encourage people with Lupus to exercise as a way to alleviate inflammation, pain, and anxiety caused by the disease. Still they warn that Lupus may prevent patients from weight training and high aerobics. How were you able to compete against the strongest, most vigorous competitors in bodybuilding and win 1st place? “I refuse to let this disease stop me from doing the things I want to do or from reaching my goals. I believe if you have faith in God and you put your mind to it you can do anything! It’s not going to be easy, but it’s not impossible. I’m a firm believer in pushing through the pain. In May I won 1st place in the Rockford Grand Prix Body Building Competition and went on to win the Omaha Pro-Am 2015 qualifying me to go to nationals. If I win there, I can become a professional

bodybuilder. That would be something, to my knowledge, that no other person with Lupus has done. My only goal going into those two competitions was to compete. Being able to push through being in the hospital, being sick, being exhausted. If I could go to the show, I could prove to myself that I’m a winner, and I didn’t let Lupus stop me. To me that was a bigger win that winning 1st place and winning the trophy. I trained for 6 months to be in that show. I would wake up at 4 am every morning, do cardio, go to work until 6pm, go back to the gym and weight train for another hour and I wouldn’t get home until 9 o’clock at night. It was by no means easy, but it helped that I had a good team of people around me. I had two trainers (Charles Thornton & Chaya Boone). Charles would send me inspirational text messages everyday and remind me that I couldn’t let this stop me from winning. He told me from day one that I was going to win 1st place. Just having faith is the biggest part. God’s not going to bring you to something without bringing you through it. There were times that I was in the hospital, but I was more concerned with getting back into the gym so I wouldn’t miss my workout. Some days I got released from the hospital and I went straight to the gym. When you have a passion and love for something you don’t let anything get in your way, not even an illness. I went on stage with confidence on 100% because I knew how much I had put into it and I wasn’t going to let anyone beat me. When I won 1st prize, I was surprised. But when I won the second competition I knew that I deserved it.”

You are an inspiration to anyone that’s battling an illness of any kind. What would you say to someone who needs encouragement? Push through. A close friend Shanda Spurlock (who battled with cancer as a young woman) would always tell me to push through. I didn’t know at the time what she meant until I started going through my own personal challenges. You literally have to push through all the pain and hurt and just try to live the most normal life as possible. It may mean something different for different people, but make sure you use that thought to motivate yourself to live whatever life you desire. It’s definitely possible! This scripture sums of the last 12 months of my life: “And he said unto me, ‘my grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me”. 2nd Corinthians 12:9

Individual 33 •

Style The definition of a free spirit is someone who lives by his or her own wishes and is unconstrained by society. Though today’s fashion world is primarily ruled by popular opinion and trends, you can always tell when someone is liberated to fly above the masses, simply by how they choose to dress. Individual style can be as much a place of freedom for a person as the sky is for a bird. So what does it take to have a true sense of style in the day and age we live in? Two things: Identify and Individuality. It may seem simple, but so many people are ruled by thoughts of what others think about them that they can hardly make it out of the closet before they’ve conformed to social norms: “I’m not wearing red, it’s not in this season”; “I don’t have what it takes to wear a dress like that”; or “What would they say if I wore something like this to work?” If you are afraid to have your own individual style, imagine the other areas where you don’t really embrace your own identity. While reading this, look up at the next person you see and examine their individual style. Do you sense the awe? Does a certain wonder arise within you? Why did that person choose to put those clothes on? Was it because they read it in a magazine that wearing those clothes would make them cool, or hip or trendy?

WINTER 2015

by Joshua Fellows

Or does it truly describe who they are? It’s definitely something to think about. The advertising industry knows that in order to sell something that a consumer really doesn’t need, they must convince the consumer that the items will add something to how they see themselves or are seen by others. In many cases you are purchasing an “identity enhancer” instead of a product. When you don’t understand the unique individual that you are, you are likely to try to fill up your life with more things -things that won’t truly give you meaning and purpose in life. Once we take a step back and realize this truth we also can realize the true need for our own individuality. No matter what we are doing with out busy lives, standing out as an individual is key. The Bible reminds of that our true identity comes from Christ Jesus. Once we understand our unique design, we are faced with a marvelous discovery and being a true individual becomes a very easy task. Each and everyday I wake up, I rest assured that no matter what clothes I wear, or no matter how people view me, if God is the center of my life and my choices then nothing else matters. I encourage you to start each day with these things in mind and as you enter your closet, let your individual style shine!

to wed

been in the “V Card Club” all of my life. Yes, I’m still a virgin. Seeing that 10 out of 12 of the women I know who were formerly members have now lost their membership, I wonder sometimes if waiting to wed is a forgotten practice? The decrease in the number of people holding out till marriage just based off of my friends circle alone, leads me to believe that the idea of waiting to wed is certainly endangered and almost extinct.

In my generation of Young Millennials, the short-term sexual relationship or “hookup” is the road most people take, even if they don’t want it to be their final destination. In fact, the vast majority of my friends hope to get married some day. They just want to have fun with casual sex while they search for the person they consider the “Right One.” Marriage in itself is still a highly respected practice among my generation, but many no longer believe in the biblical principles of purity and holiness. Yet, there are the daring few who still have the courage to go against popular dating practices and wait.

Take NFL Seattle Seahawks Champion Russell Wilson as an example. While dating the ultra beautiful music artist Ciara, Russell decided to abstain from sex to allow their relationship to grow naturally toward marriage. During an interview with Pastor Miles McPherson at San Diego’s Rock Church, Russell Wilson was quoted saying: “I said to her – and she completely agreed – ‘Can we love each other without that?’ … If you can love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”
I find it humorous and sincere, when Russell Wilson goes on to say: “I ain’t gonna lie – I need ya’ll to pray for us. Because I know you have seen her on the screen now. If there’s a 10, she’s a 15… Pray for me, keep my mind clear, keep my heart clear.” We all know that waiting isn’t easy. I have made the decision to carry the torch for those who are holding out for marriage, to prove that waiting to wed is not a forgotten concept. For me it’s NOT about waiting for a knight in shining armor to rescue me or romantically take me away. It is a choice and a lifestyle that I have made for myself to love, honor

and respect my virtue. I carry my torch so that I am able to help you light your torch, in hopes that you will soon help someone else light theirs - because standing for God is a light that shines like none other. SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE SEX CULTURE It’s been reported that even Ciara found out about Russell Wilson’s comments through her mentions on Twitter. His remarks brought a frenzy of questions from the public. “Why would he wait if she’s already got a kid?” Ciara didn’t make Future, her baby’s father wait, so why now? Social media took all of these questions and ran their tabloids: “Could Ciara keep Russell from another championship?!” “No Sex Before Marriage?” “Ciara and Russell are abstaining from sex until marriage” Since Social Media plays a huge role in the sex culture promoting lustfulness, nudity, and explicit sexuality, those Waiting to Wed will need support now more than ever. We talk with Christen O’Neal, Founder of the Loc & Key organization to see how she uses social media to help believers “Keep It On Loc.”

Q: Does social media make it more difficult to 1. Wait to Wed and 2. Be vocal about it? A: “It definitely makes it more difficult because it’s not the popular decision. Which is one of the things that we are trying to combat with Loc and Key. We really want to see a social media take over! One of our agendas is to get as many people that are subscribing to the website to get them in our “I Pledge Purity” Tee & get everybody taking pictures in the T-Shirts to basically say not only is it relevant but its right! Ultimately social media affects the culture more than anything.” Q: What exactly is Loc and Key? Loc & Key was founded by two women whose desire is to empower and inspire LADIES AND GENTS to pursue purity through purpose and selfworth. Often times the presentation of a clean and safe

life is bland and uneventful. Loc & Key presents ideas and creative resources to promote an active and entertaining life without compromising self-worth. Though our principles are founded on biblical truths, we believe this movement is not limited to Christian only audiences. Q: If someone is struggling with “Waiting to Wed”, where can they go to find support from others? A: Loc and Key offers support because we are a community of people who are all waiting and honoring God together. Through our Worth the Wait tours and forums, you will have an opportunity to join into an online community with others who have taken the pledge to live a life of purpose and purity.
