CREATING THE DOCUMENTARY

Purpose of this assignment This unit will help you gain a deeper understanding of documentary history and aesthetics, helping you acquire the skills needed to produce documentary films to a professional standard.

Scenario The International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. They screen short and feature documentaries and have helped to lunch the careers of several of the forms most prolific directors. This year we intend to enter our films and compete in the best short documentary category. In addition, at our end of year Gloucester Cineworld screening, we will have, for the first time, a segment dedicated to documentary films. Your assignment will focus on understanding the history and aesthetics of documentary film. You will produce (individually or in a group) a 3 to 7-minute short piece, which may screen at one, or both, of the events above. Task 1: (L.O 1: 1.1 and M1, D1)

You must be able to L.O 1: Understand the development of the moving image documentary format 1.1: Critically review the development of the moving image documentary format For this task, you should produce a 7 to 10-minute video essay that shows you understand (1) the development (2) the production techniques (3) the aesthetics (4) the editing styles (5) the purposes and (6) the journalistic responsibilities that relate to documentary filmmaking. The video essay should contain your own considered explanations, evaluations and criticisms in the form of your own voice over narrative and text on screen. Your work should discuss and critique the works of the major contributors; the styles and techniques employed, and examine the formats allusion to political, social, and economic truth. You should attempt to examine how documentary filmmakers alter perspectives by revealing the underbelly of a particular subject.

IMPORTANT 1 The VIDEO ESSAY should consist of edited footage and your voice over. 2 Your video essay should contain a chronological analysis of how the format has changed through time. 3 Reference academic sources in your voice over (books and journals) 4 Alongside your video essay submit a word-processed PDF bibliography (use the Harvard referencing system). 5 Your essay MUST be submitted as a .MOV or MPEG 4. 6 All your sources must be clearly and correctly referenced in your bibliography.

To achieve M1 you must show that an effective approach to study and research has been applied. This should include evidence of your use of a wide range of academic and production resources (books, journals, other documentaries, films etc.). To achieve D1 you should compare, contrast and critique different ideas and concepts relating to documentary filmmaking using specific examples. Do this while continuously referencing key academic texts and sources.

Task 2 (LO 2: 2.1, 2.2, M2, D2) You must L.O 2: Be able to complete preproduction for moving image documentary proposals 2.1: Create an imaginative and detailed proposal for a moving image documentary production 2.2: Complete preproduction for a moving image documentary working to a standard acceptable to an employer or client The production of any documentary starts with a consideration of ideas and concepts. It is important to think about the themes you want to address, as well as the visual style that will effectively draw the audience into your narrative. In order for your work to have impact, you need to identify and evaluate agendas and objectives, and determine, through research, what techniques you want to employ. For this task, you will individually create a detailed PowerPoint proposal / production sketchbook (of at least 20 slides) for a 5 to 10-minute documentary that can be broadcast on Channel 4. You will pitch and present your developed idea to your lecturer and class (use videos, photographs, sketches, images, music etc.). You must show evidence of planning in your pitch (include research and planning already done). The pitch should be visually stimulating with the intention of winning the support required to produce your idea. In your proposal 1. Present the topic, the key themes, and subjects your documentary will investigate. 2. Show other documentaries to give a feel for how your idea and concept will look when it is on screen. 3. Cover all aspects of preproduction; from people to be interviewed to locations, costs, delivery deadlines and equipment required. 4. Discuss in detail the visual style and structure of the piece, and why you think this is the most effective way to cover it. YOUR POWERPOINT PROPOSAL / PRODUCTION SKETCHBOOK SHOULD BE SUBMITTED AS A PDF DOCUMENT IN A FOLDER WITH ALL MEDIA FILES INCLUDED AND PROPERLY LABELLED (VIDEOS, MUSIC, HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOGRAPHY ETC).

REMEMBER: Your submission should include evidence of idea development, planning and production for your documentary (treatments, mood boards, storyboards, lighting diagrams, set designs, colour palettes, costume sketches, photographs from the work of other filmmakers/artists, production schedules, call sheets, risk assessments, permission documentation, casting adverts, subject photographs, budget sheets, equipment lists, location photographs etc.)

To achieve M2 show how your planning/preparation for the documentary has been done and how you have taken into consideration the work of other practitioners in the field. To achieve D2 you will take responsibility for efficient planning and management of a specific job role in the production. You should provide evidence of planning and research (for your job role) in your sketchbook.

Task 3 (LO 3: 3.1, 3.2, and M3, D3) L.O 3: Be able to produce moving image documentaries 3.1: Complete production for a moving image documentary working to a standard acceptable to an employer or client. 3.2: Complete post-production for a moving image documentary working to a standard acceptable to an employer or client After your pitches and proposals (see task 2), your lecturer will select projects to progress to production. For this task, you will work (individually or in teams) to produce a short 5 to 10-minute Channel 4 style documentary (must be submitted as an mpeg4 or .mov). Each member of the team must have a role approved by your lecturer (for example director, editor, producer, sound recordist/designer or cinematographer). To achieve M3 use an appropriate and structured approach in the production of your documentary. From ideas to storyboards and production schedules, your work should be organised and undertaken according to acceptable industry standards. The final documentary should meet industry and audience expectations of the format. To achieve D3 you will have to show (in the sketchbook and your evaluation) that your ideas have significantly contributed to the look, feel and overall aesthetics of the finished piece. You must be able to demonstrate that you have applied innovative and creative thought to all areas of your work. NOTE: ENSURE ALL YOUR PRODUCTION DOCUMENTATION IS INCLUDED IN YOUR PDF SKETCHBOOK (SEE TASK 2)

Task 4 (LO 4: 4.1, 4.2 and D3) You must L.O 4: be able to review own moving image documentary production work 4.1: Critically evaluate finished documentary against agreed criteria and make recommendations for improvements 4.2: Critically evaluate own production skills against criteria and make recommendations for improvements After the production, in a recorded class session with your lecturer, you will (1) clearly explain the production process and the job you did during the production (2) evaluate your performance within the team (3) examine the ability of the team to work together, and (4) discuss the suitability of the final film (from a client perspective) and how it could be improved. KEY POINTS ON ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The Merit & Distinction criteria will be discussed during briefing sessions where you will be expected to take notes. You will have the opportunity throughout the assignment to discuss your work with staff. You must achieve all the pass criteria on a relevant unit to move on to merits grades and likewise with merits to achieve distinction grades. Notes (please take notes during briefing sessions)

PLEASE NOTE: It is essential that your work is grammatically correct with no spelling errors. There are several methods for assisting with this: Spell Check – All the software we use have UK spell check facilities that you should get familiar with. Copy Reading – After you have finished your assignment allow time to read back through it and amend any errors. Buddy Up – swap with a peer and read each others work, not only will you help them but you may learn something new as well. Authenticity – It is vital to your development that you are responsible for and produce your own work. You are expected to adhere to certain professional standards such as Harvard referencing your primary and secondary research and imagery that you use within your work. You should use a well formatted bibliography at the end of your assignment or credit the work as you produce it by identifying the website, book, journal, magazine, blog etc where you found the information/image. Plagiarism – is serious, it is not acceptable to use other people’s work and try to pass it off as your own. The college uses a system called TURNITIN to check. It’s a simple process where we run your file through and it will identify how much is copied and where it’s from. Ignorance isn’t an excuse and we are far more interested in your own thoughts and opinions anyway.

How to hand in your assessment This assessment must be handed into Nosa Obayiuwana by the hand in date and time on the front of the assignment brief. If you have a valid reason why you will not be able to hand in the work on time, you will need to fill out and hand in an AE1. If you need to ask for a longer extension you will need to fill out and hand in an AE2 to your Head of School at least two days before the assessment deadline. ALL WORK SHOULD BE HANDED IN AS SPECIFIED BY THE LECTURER. YOU NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED THE SUBMISSION SHEET AFTER HAND IN.
