Assignment title
UNDERSTANDING CINEMA
Purpose of this assignment This unit aims to help you develop a sophisticated understanding of the theoretical frameworks at play in contemporary cinema. It will also help you sharpen your skills in critical analysis within a chosen field of film studies. Scenario You will be charged in Unit 33 (Fiction Production for the Moving Image) to create a short film that can be screened at our end of year show in Cineworld Gloucester Quays. This year, we also intend to enter films made on the course into film festivals around the world. The festival circuit is very competitive and films showcased at these events need to show a deeper understanding of the theoretical frameworks subliminally working within factional screen narratives. This Film Studies assignment will ground you in concepts and practices that will prove useful in the creation of your final major project. Task: L. O 1: Understand how meaning is constructed in film through visual and technical signification L. O 2: Understand theoretical models of film analysis L. O 3: Be able to apply critical analysis to a chosen film of film studies
In a pictorial essay (of between 2000 to 3000 words), using at least two established theoretical approaches within film studies, critically discuss how meaning can be constructed in a specific set of films through visual and technical signification. You essay should critically review (compare, assess, discriminate) different theoretical models in film analysis (for example realism, auteurism, feminism, surrealism, genre theory). Your points and arguments should show an awareness of key theorists, important films and the evolution through time of each theoretical perspective discussed. Your work should use a variety of acceptable sources: books, journals, reviews, films and credible industry / academic websites. You should use the Harvard referencing system in the text and in formatting your reference list / bibliography at the end of your essay. Your work should be well structured and clearly presented (justified, 12pt, Arial etc.). To achieve M1 (merit) Your work should not only quote sources, you should also, in your own language, explain the core of the referenced theorists’ arguments. To achieve M2 (merit) you must show that you have been able to do comprehensive secondary research. You should reference a wide variety of films, books, journals and academic articles. To achieve M3 (merit) your work should be well presented. Discussions / arguments must be clearly articulated with specific examples brought into focus. To achieve D1 (distinction) you should compare, contrast and critique different ideas and concepts using specific examples. Do this while continuously referencing key academic texts and sources. To achieve D2 (distinction) your work must show that your research and understanding goes beyond topics and theorists discussed in class. There should be clear evidence that the sources you have used and your analysis has developed beyond the obvious. To achieve D3 (distinction) you must present logical and cohesive arguments based on the work of key theorists. The examples you use will show that you clearly understand concepts that were unfamiliar to you at the beginning of the unit. IMPORTANT: ONLY 20% OF YOUR REFERENCES CAN COME FROM ONLINE SOURCES. 80% MUST BE FROM BOOKS, JOURNALS AND ACADEMIC PAPERS. A MERIT GRADE IS ONLY GIVEN WHEN ALL THREE TICKED M CRITERIA HAS BEEN ACHIEVED A DISTINCTION GRADE IS ONLY GIVEN WHEN ALL THREE TICKED D CRITERIA HAS BEEN ACHIEVED

KEY POINTS ON ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The Merit & Distinction criteria will be discussed during briefing sessions where you will be expected to take notes. You will have the opportunity throughout the assignment to discuss your work with staff. You must achieve all the pass criteria on a relevant unit to move on to merits grades and likewise with merits to achieve distinction grades. Notes (please take notes during briefing sessions)
PLEASE NOTE: It is essential that your work is grammatically correct with no spelling errors. There are several methods for assisting with this: Spell Check – All the software we use have UK spell check facilities that you should get familiar with. Copy Reading – After you have finished your assignment allow time to read back through it and amend any errors. Buddy Up – swap with a peer and read each other’s work, not only will you help them but you may learn something new as well. Authenticity – It is vital to your development that you are responsible for and produce your own work. You are expected to adhere to certain professional standards such as Harvard referencing your primary and secondary research and imagery that you use within your work. You should use a well formatted bibliography at the end of your assignment or credit the work as you produce it by identifying the website, book, journal, magazine, blog etc where you found the information/image. Plagiarism – is serious, it is not acceptable to use other people’s work and try to pass it off as your own. The college uses a system called TURNITIN to check. It’s a simple process where we run your file through and it will identify how much is copied and where it’s from. Ignorance isn’t an excuse and we are far more interested in your own thoughts and opinions anyway.
How to hand in your assessment This assessment must be handed into LAYLA GUNTER by the hand in date and time on the front of the assignment brief. If you have a valid reason why you will not be able to hand in the work on time, you will need to fill out and hand in an AE1. If you need to ask for a longer extension you will need to fill out and hand in an AE2 to your Head of School at least two days before the assessment deadline. ALL WORK SHOULD BE HANDED IN AS SPECIFIED BY THE LECTURER. YOU NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED THE SUBMISSION SHEET AFTER HAND IN. For staff use only. Internal Verification
