Primary Times chats with UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 players about how they’re using the tournament to inspire children The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 is set to take place in England in July. Due to be the biggest European women’s sport event ever, Primary Times caught up with two England Women’s stars; defender Demi Stokes and fellow defender and captian Leah Williamson to ask them about their experience with sports at school and how teachers play an important role in growing a child’s passion. “This summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO tournament is hugely exciting, not least because it’s on home soil. The last two years have been so hard for everyone and so the tournament is an opportunity for us all to enjoy ourselves, inspire one another and see fans and family,” Demi Stokes said. However, geמּing to play for England at an event such as this has taken these girls a lot of hard work and determination, which all began during their time in school with the help of their teachers. “Many of us players discovered our love for football at school, so we know first-hand what an important role teachers play when it comes to instilling a passion for the game and developing the skills we need,” Leah Williamson told us. Demi
continued, stating that, “from a very young age, I was playing football on the estate where I lived in Sunderland - I just loved it. I had a teacher at my primary School, Ian Williamson, and if it hadn’t been for him, I wouldn’t be a professional football player now. He put me through trials and in the boys’ team. He was so supportive and encouraging at every step. My advice for anybody at Primary School would be to ask your PE teacher to get together a local team and to find out what opportunities there are for you in your area. There might be youth clubs that organise games, for example. One of the most important things is to believe in yourself and enjoy it. You’d be surprised at how far you can get by trying to make your dreams come true. Things can just snowball and before you know it, you’re living your dream.” Football isn’t the only sport that can benefit children though, Leah pointed out the importance of PE in general: “It’s so important to have time for PE in school. Football doesn’t just help us in terms of our fitness, it teaches us some really vital life skills, such as how to interact with people who are older and younger than us and how to share
with others. It’s also so helpful when it comes to our mental health.” To help engage children in the tournament a range of free and exciting resources have been created to bring it to life. The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Schools Programme has been developed and tested by teachers and encourages teamwork, creativity and a love of sport. The activities, which cover subjects including PE, English, Maths, PSHE, Science and Art & Design, can be differentiated for pupils of varied abilities or with SEND and can be used in the classroom or at home. Leah hopes these resoures will not just inspire this generation of future footballing stars, but many more to come: “We’d love as many pupils and schools as possible to enjoy the UEFA Women’s EURO this summer. The Schools Programme is packed full of resources to inspire pupils in the lead-up to the tournament and beyond. It’s so important to inspire the next generation of athletes, so I hope all schools get involved and provide a lasting legacy.”

veryone thinks they know the story of Titanic, the “unsinkable ship”, which struck an iceberg on its maiden transatlantic voyage and sunk, orchestra still playing, with the tragic loss of over 1,500 lives. Maybe they’ve seen the 1997 James Cameron movie of the same name and think of the

n addition to the museum’s existing education programme, the Museum of Gloucester runs a range of education sessions for teachers and primary school classes based around the exhibition, designed to offer children a deeper understanding of the ocean liner, the way it was constructed, the world in which it operated and the disaster itself. romance portrayed by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Maybe they’re from Belfast or Southampton, shipbuilding cities associated with the ocean liner, or perhaps they even have an ancestor involved in the disaster. Whatever you know, ‘Titanic Honour and Glory’ a new exhibition at Museum of Gloucester is sure to shed fresh light on one of history’s best documented disasters. From the liner’s conception, to her premature demise 110 years ago, the exhibition brings to life the history of the legendary vessel and includes genuine artefacts from Titanic, her sister ships, owners The White Star Line, plus memorabilia from the 1997 film. Among the treasures are: a selection of china dinner plates on which the first meals were served aboard Titanic; personal belongings of Titanic’s passengers and crew, including a night dress belonging to first class passenger Margaret Welles Baron Swift; a nameplate from one of Titanic’s lifeboats; rare examples of in-memoriam tributes, made in the aftermath of the sinking, including Titanic relief fund cheques, which supported families of those lost at sea; and
examples of the sumptuous interior enjoyed by luxury passengers from her sister ships, the Olympic and Britannic. Exhibition owner Sean Szmalc first became fascinated in the Titanic at the age of five when he saw the film ‘A Night to Remember’ which, until James Cameron’s epic, was the most famous on-screen depiction of the disaster, prompting him also to collect memorabilia from the 1997 film, whose 25th anniversary, by happy coincidence, falls this year. Fans of the film will be excited to see up close some of the costumes worn by Winslet and DiCaprio in iconic moments from the film including the famous dazzling ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace. No wonder The Times newspaper has described the exhibition as one of its top five in the country! Gloucestershire families will also be fascinated by local connections to the legendary liner, adding a moving personal resonance to the exhibition for local residents. Activities for children and families plus a comprehensive events and education programme also accompany this exhibition.

Parents looking to get their children into gardening will also find lots of useful information on the RHS website, from suggestions for which varieties of vegetables and edible flowers it’s easiest and best to grow, to miniprojects that will inspire children by giving them something to work towards and care about. You can also download activity cards to get ideas for other things to do in the garden, find recommended books and guides for how to grow vegetables and other plants that include month-by-month sowing and harvesting charts as well as more detailed instructions for sowing seeds, caring for plants and picking the fruits of your labours. One vegetable that’s perfect to grow at this time of year is the radish, which offers a great introduction to cultivation because it takes as little as four weeks from planting the seeds to harvesting and eating them. Highfield Garden World in Whitminster also stocks a wide variety of plants, seeds and bulbs. A family-run independent garden centre, Highfield celebrated its centenary two years ago and has recently opened a brand new Planteria covering nearly three and a half square kilometres, housing a vast array of plants to choose from. WINNER!
CONGRATULATIONS to Imogen Robinson, 7, from Dinton Primary School. She has won a copy of David Walliams’ ‘The World’s Worst Children’ for this wonderful picture of Tracy Beaker. Imogen has become a huge fan of Jaqueline Wilson’s famous character. She thinks that using wool is a great way to create Tracy’s unruly hair, and I agree!
