chronicles the remarkable life journey of Dr. Ming Wang, a world-renowned laser eye surgeon, philanthropist and Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year. As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras – China’s Cultural Revolution – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart, where against all odds he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced the Christian faith and tackled one of the most important questions of our time – Are faith All proceeds and science friends or foes? – which led to his invention donated to the Wang of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore sight. Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit charity To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye FromDarknessToSight.com procedures and has treated patients from nearly every state in the U.S. and from over 55 countries worldwide. He is considered the “doctor’s doctor,” as he has operated on over 4,000 physicians. Dr. Wang has published 8 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. He is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D LASIK (age 18+), 3D Laser Kamra (age 45+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (age 50+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (age 60+). He established a non-profit foundation which provides sight restoration surgeries for indigent patients who otherwise would never have the opportunity to receive them free-of-charge. This is a story of one man’s inspirational journey, of turning fear, poverty, persecution and prejudice into healing and love for others. It demonstrates how focus, determination, humility and profound faith can inspire a life that, in turn, impacts that of countless others.

MATT LOGAN

(Artistic Director, Director & Designer)

An accomplished designer, director, illustrator and performer, Matt Logan is first and foremost a storyteller—drawing on his multi-disciplinary talents to create a comprehensive signature aesthetic that connects every aspect of a Studio Tenn production, from the set to the stitching. One of a rare few Director/Designers in the industry, Logan made his professional directorial debut at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) at the age of 19. He attended Pepperdine University on a Design Scholarship where he apprenticed under theatre legend John Raitt and received the John Raitt Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Theatre Arts. Upon graduating, Logan worked on Broadway in costuming for GYPSY, THE LION KING, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and OKLAHOMA. He assisted Tara Rubin Casting for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, JERSEY BOYS, SPAMALOT and SHREK. A nationally recognized illustrator and caricature artist, Logan was named by The New York Times as an heir to the Al Hirschfeld tradition for his Broadway portraiture. His celebrity clients include Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, Jude Law, Martin Short, Mike Nichols, Dolly Parton, Mary Tyler Moore, Katie Holmes, Harry Connick Jr. and Morgan Freeman. Recently, his privately commissioned drawing for AN AMERICAN IN PARIS was submitted to the Library of Congress by the George Gershwin estate. As an actor, Logan’s credits include Performance Riverside (INTO THE WOODS, SCARLET PIMPERNEL, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD), McCoy Rigby Entertainment (THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN starring Cathy Rigby), Tennessee Repertory Theatre (1776), Rattlestick Theatre NY (MESSAGE FOR MICHAEL), the Actors Fund of NY (ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY starring Douglas Sills and Marin Mazzie), and San Francisco Opera (THE MERRY WIDOW starring Fredrica Von Stade) which aired on PBS in the winter of 2009. He also starred as Henry Higgins in Studio Tenn’s 2013 production of MY FAIR LADY. In the fall of 2009 Logan became the founding Artistic Director of Studio Tenn. He has since directed and designed six critically acclaimed seasons with Studio Tenn in addition to the company’s debut production of OUR TOWN at the Loveless Barn. The sold-out performances secured Studio Tenn as a major force in the artistic landscape of Tennessee. Logan then led a partnership with Show Hope by directing and designing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA with the Nashville Symphony and a star-studded cast including Tony Award winner Heather Headley. In the height of his artistic leadership, Logan was named Best Director of 2014 by the Nashville Scene.

JAKE SPECK

(Managing Director, Executive Producer)

Jake returned to his native Nashville in 2010 after completing a twoyear run in the Tony-winning Broadway musical JERSEY BOYS—a show that led him to perform at the Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards, and for the President and First Lady at the White House. His current role as Studio Tenn’s Managing Director fulfills a lifelong dream: to create a theatre company in his home city that inspired his career in the arts. After high school, Speck spent a couple of years performing locally and singing with the group Nickajack (Developmental record deal, Asylum Records) before moving to New York to accept the highest national scholarship offered by the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). Following graduation, he worked with numerous Tony Awardwinning theatre veterans, including Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricist Sheldon Harnick (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF), director Des McAnuff (BIG RIVER, THE WHO’S TOMMY, JERSEY BOYS), Academy Award-winning writer Marshall Brickman (ANNIE HALL) and director and choreographer Susan Stroman (THE PRODUCERS). Speck’s New York credits include creating the role of Chuck Yeager in THE FASTEST WOMAN ALIVE and Mike in LIFE SCIENCE, both Off Broadway. He has toured the country in professional productions of KISS ME KATE, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, FOREVER PLAID, THE MELVILLE BOYS and more. In Nashville, he starred among Broadway veterans in Show Hope’s CINDERELLA with the Nashville Symphony in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He has performed at the Taste of Chicago festival, during the 7th Inning Stretch at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, and on the steps of NYC’s City Hall for the World Series Champion New York Yankees. In 2005, he appeared in Mel Brooks’ musical comedy film “The Producers.” Speck continues to work in film and television and occasionally appears on the Studio Tenn stage. Recent credits include playing the “Master of the House”, Thenardier in the company’s own LES MISERABLES (2014) and Juror #8 in TWELVE ANGRY MEN (2012). Recent film credits include a guest star appearance on the new Netflix series “Master of None” opposite Aziz Ansari, 4 episodes in a recurring role in the first season of ABC’s hit TV series “Nashville,” several commercials and short films as well as the 2014 feature film “Closer to God.” Under Speck’s administrative leadership, Studio Tenn has made the Nashville Business Journal’s list of the top five performing arts organizations in Nashville for two consecutive years. Jake is married to Studio Tenn’s resident choreographer Emily Tello Speck and together they have produced three amazing sons, Nash, Noah and Leo!

CREATIVE TEAM MITCH WHITE

(Technical Director/Scene Shop Manager) A master-level craftsman and experienced production professional, Mitch White makes Studio Tenn’s custom stage designs into reality with surgical precision and artistic ingenuity. White segued into professional theatre after a 25-year career in the music industry working in management, artist development, touring, marketing and promotion with numerous performers including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, TobyMac, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow and more. He was first introduced to Studio Tenn when his wife Susannah was cast in the company’s inaugural season opener HELLO, DOLLY!. He began building sets and soon realized he’d found his perfect niche: combining his entertainment industry and construction experience along with his organizational and creative skills. White has served as Technical Director and Set Co-designer for all of Studio Tenn’s productions since 2011, including GUYS AND DOLLS (2011); A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2011-2013); THE MIRACLE WORKER (2012); THE SOUND OF MUSIC (2012); SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE (2012); BIG RIVER (2013); MY FAIR LADY (2013); THE HANK LEGACY (2013); INTO THE WOODS (2013); FROST/NIXON (2014); LES MISERABLES (2014); FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (2014); STEEL MAGNOLIAS (2014); IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (2014); THE CASH LEGACY (2015); THE WIZARD OF OZ (2015); THE GLASS MENAGERIE (2016); WEST SIDE STORY (2016); EVITA (2016). Other theatre credits include productions by Tennessee Repertory Theatre and Belmont University. Additionally, White is commissioned to design and produce custom pieces and installations by bands, artists and venues including the Nashville Public Library and the Frist Museum.

ERIN PARKER

(Production Manager/Costume Shop Manager) Erin has spent over 15 years wearing a variety of hats in the professional theatre world. In positions ranging from sound board operator & stitcher to actor & designer, she has become uniquely qualified to serve as Studio Tenn’s production manager where she helps coordinate and facilitate the bringing of all aspects of the vision of this incredible team into reality. With 30 years of sewing experience under her belt, the job of costume supervisor is a natural addition to her plate of responsibilities. Erin studied Theatre at the University of Evansville. Her mother taught her to sew and her father taught her how to fix things. Many thanks to Matt, Jake and Philip for believing that she could wear so many hats with professionalism and grace.

BENJAMIN KERN

(Production Stage Manager) Benjamin is excited to join Studio Tenn this season as their resident production stage manager. Prior to coming to Nashville, Benjamin worked at the Lortel Winning Off Broadway Company Primary Stages where he helped to produce new American Works. At Primary, he also worked on: FRESH INK READING Series for the Dorthy Strelsin New American Writer’s Group that included Broadway and TV talent such as Michael Cerveris, Mary Louise Parker, and John Glover. FROM THE DIRECTOR I have always believed that theater helps us make sense of our lives and the lives of our neighbors. Studio Tenn was founded on the idea that theatre can transport any individual to different worlds where they discover a piece of themselves and pathways to growth. Tonight’s play holds a special place in my heart – it is a show that challenges me to ponder my interactions and motivations. “The Elephant Man” is a genuinely complex drama that exposes the power that pain can play in personal discovery. The rich prose raises questions of the human condition: “Am I prejudice?” “Do I ostracize others?” “Do I love with a genuine heart?” The play also juxtaposes real-life emotions of brutality and compassion, degradation and dignity, opacity and transparency to name a few. When I began work on Studio Tenn’s adaptation of “The Elephant Man,” I knew the entire production had to present itself as a blank slate to which we could all project ourselves. “The Elephant Man” reveals a story about every man. Merrick could not hide his infirmities. They were permanent, yet he rose above them to become a beautiful soul. I believe we are all capable of rising above our condition, whatever that may be. Every set, stage direction, costume, musical note, and light are done with thought and purpose. I want audiences to be able to discover the true meaning of this production rather than show them. “The Elephant Man” depicts two worlds, a circus freak show and a hospital. Each set represents captivity, with set intimating captivity through cruelty and the other through protection and growth. While hospitals are often considered sterile, we designed a hospital with a greenhouse atmosphere where nature and nurture abide. Ninety-five percent of the time I characterize through color. When it comes to costume design, I select colors and lines that evoke a certain response. “The Elephant Man” called for rich colors of romantic Victorian times but also stark and aseptic hues representative of disease and despair. It has been my privilege to collaborate with a full array of talented and generous craftspeople in scenery, costume design, stage management, lighting and more. I do hope you enjoy the show.
