THE MUSIC OF PINK FLOYD

E VE NT

Performed by the Nashville Symphony Nashville Symphony Brent Havens, conductor, arranger Randy Jackson, vocals Dan Clemens, bass Powell Randolph, drums George Cintron, guitar John Hines, background vocals Eddie Williams, sax Kathryn Key, piano, background vocals Robert Cross, percussion Selections to be announced from the stage Official Partners

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Bridging the gulf between rock ’n’ roll and classical music, conductor/arranger Brent Havens takes the podium to present The Music of Pink Floyd, a program he scored to extend the listening experience of Pink Floyd’s timeless tunes. Performed by an orchestra and amplified with a full rock band and Randy Jackson’s vocals, Havens and his ensemble capture the essence of Pink Floyd’s ethereal harmonies. “Our concept for The Music of Pink Floyd was to take the music as close to the originals as we could and then add some colors to enhance what the original group had done,” says Havens. “The wonderful thing with an orchestra is that you have an entire palette of sounds to call upon. The band is reproducing what Pink Floyd

did on the albums, verbatim, and then having an orchestra behind the band gives the music richness, a whole different feel, a whole different sense of depth.” Delivering vocals out front, singer Randy Jackson acts as a window between the audience and reworked material. “The music itself is one thing, but Jackson more than captures the spirit of the original singers,” says Havens. With the support of show producer Rob Cross, artistic director of the Virginia Arts Festival, Havens first conceived the show for the Virginia Symphony, where Cross was orchestra manager at the time. Since then, they’ve taken the show on the road to Atlanta, Denver, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Omaha, Raleigh and numerous other

cities throughout the United States. The project’s appeal is in large part due to the music’s authenticity. When the music was first discussed in 1994, Havens understood that fans would want to hear the original, familiar elements of the music. He therefore followed exact line arrangements and used the orchestra for enhancement. With a 50-piece orchestra hanging on his every cue, Havens has a large landscape to work with. Just among the double-reed instruments — the oboe, English horn, bassoon — there are so many colors. Add in the violins, violas, cellos, basses and woodwinds, or more pure sounds from instruments like a flute or a clarinet, and the selection grows. Then consider the entire brass section, and you realize the variety of choices available to accompany a distorted electric guitar, bass and drums. The two-plus-hour concert features 17 Pink Floyd tunes, including “Money,” “Learning to Fly,” “Comfortably Numb” and other selections from The Wall. The show has proven a great way to introduce rock fans to the symphony experience. “I’m sure there are people who come to these shows who have never seen their city’s symphony orchestra, and this allows them to experience something new along with the music that they already love,” Havens says. BRENT HAVENS, conductor Berklee-trained arranger/conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, feature films and virtually every kind of television. His work includes commercials, cartoons, sports music for ESPN and movies for ABC, CBS and ABC Family Channel Network. Havens has also worked with the Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting for Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Birthday

Party Finale, which was attended by more than 150,000 fans. He has worked with some of the world’s greatest orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony and countless others. Havens recently completed the score for the film Quo Vadis. He is arranger/conductor for seven symphonic rock programs: the Music of Led Zeppelin, the Music of the Doors, the Music of Pink Floyd, the Music of the Eagles, the Music of Queen, the Music of Michael Jackson and, most recently, the Music of The Who. RANDY JACKSON, vocals Randy Jackson was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He started playing piano and guitar at age 5. His earliest influences were Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin. In 1973, he joined Shepherds Bush as lead guitarist. It was here that he met Felix Hanemann. The two left the band a year later and soon met drummer Guy Gelso. Together, they formed Zebra in 1975. Zebra moved to New York and in 1982 signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Their first album went Gold and became the fastestselling debut album in the history of the label. During the next couple of years, Zebra opened for Aerosmith, Journey, ZZ Top, Loverboy, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar and REO Speedwagon. The group has released five albums with combined sales of more than 2 million. In September 1995 Jackson performed his first orchestral show with the Virginia Symphony, singing lead vocals and adding acoustic guitar to The Music of Led Zeppelin. Today he continues performing the shows nationwide to sold-out audiences and also performs the music of Pink Floyd, The Doors and The Eagles.

IL VOLO Piero Barone Ignazio Boschetto Gianluca Ginoble

E VE NT

Selections to be announced from the stage. Official Partners

ABOUT THE ARTISTS IL VOLO In the past two years alone, Il Volo have performed all over the world, released a pair of massively selling albums, joined legendary songstress Barbra Streisand on tour, and taken the stage for two highly acclaimed PBS specials. Like all of the Italian vocal trio’s offerings, their latest album of Christmas standards, Buon Natale, upholds the central principle held dear by Il Volo members Piero Barone (age 20), Ignazio Boschetto (19) and Gianluca Ginoble (18): “Three voices, one soul.” Formed in 2009, Il Volo first enchanted audiences with their appearance on the popular Italian musical variety show Ti Lascio Una Canzone. After captivating the show’s viewers with their rendition of the Neapolitan standard “O Sole Mio,” Il Volo instantly stepped into the international spotlight. Quickly landing a worldwide recording deal with Universal Music Group, Il Volo set to work on their debut album in Los Angeles, Rome and London (where they recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios). Released in November 2012, the group’s second studio album We Are Love pushed further into pop territory while sustaining the classic sensibility at the heart of their sound. Backed by gorgeously elegant orchestration from the Czech Symphony, Il Volo put their interpretive talents to work on selections as brilliantly varied as “Questo Amore” (an Italian-language, classical-leaning 20

take on Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”), U2’s powerfully anthemic “Beautiful Day” and “Luna Nascosta” (the theme from the 2012 Mexican romance movie Hidden Moon). We Are Love also features guest appearances by the great Placido Domingo (on “Il Canto,” a song dedicated to Il Volo influence Luciano Pavarotti) and Italian singer-songwriter Eros Ramazzotti (on the tender piano ballad “Cosi”). Not only showcasing their immense vocal gifts and awe-inspiring showmanship on record and on tour, Il Volo have also graced the stages of major TV shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Talk, American Idol, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Rachael Ray Show. The group’s debut PBS special Il Volo Takes Flight has racked up more than 2,100 broadcasts since its original airing in March 2012, while their second special Il Volo: We Are Love won them further acclaim. In its capturing of the trio’s recent performance at the Fillmore Miami Beach’s Jackie Gleason Theater, the 2013 PBS special Il Volo Buon Natale made for a perfectly joyful close to a spectacular year that also included successful tours in the United States and Latin America. The current year is already off to a fantastic start, including some great news for Il Volo: In April, the group was awarded Latin Pop Album Artist of the Year, Duo or Group, at the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami, Florida.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Symphony No. 5 in C minor To begin Fantasia 2000 with a bang, Disney artists chose the opening movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, its short-shortshort-long musical motif immediately grabbing the listener’s ear. It also slyly references the time period of the original Fantasia, when this fournote motif — the same rhythm as Morse code for the letter V (“di-di-di-dah”) — underscored the “V for Victory!” rallying cry of the Allies in World War II. Computer animation was combined with hand-drawn pastels to create the look of this segment, the abstractions of what might be

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 in F major Conceived as an Art Deco interpretation of life in mythological Greece, Fantasia’s “Pastoral” segment was originally set to “The Entrance of the Little Fauns,” a brief episode from Gabriel Pierné’s ballet Cydalise et le Chèvre-pied. It soon became apparent that the story artists’ ideas were too great for such a trifle. In searching for a piece of music to support their vision, the Disney artists came across Beethoven’s program for his Sixth Symphony, in which he describes several pastoral episodes. Stokowski felt that Beethoven was illsuited to Disney and Art Deco, but Fantasia’s onscreen commentator Deems Taylor was in favor of the match.

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Nutcracker Suite One of the striking features of Fantasia’s Nutcracker Suite is how memorable the characters are, considering how short a time they’re on screen. With personality to spare, these often faceless anthropomorphized flora and fauna (and faeries) remain with us long after the last note of music has faded away. When animating the “Chinese Dance,” artist Art Babbitt kept a copy of the music on his desk to help navigate the play of musical counterpoint. He also admitted to being influenced by the antics of one of The Three Stooges. When asked if he received any assistance with the choreography of the mushrooms, Babbitt replied, “The only choreographic suggestion I ever got came from Walt Disney himself. I had animated the little mushroom taking his bow on the last note of music. Walt suggested he take the bow after. Both ways would have worked, depending on one’s translation of the little guy’s character.”

In this age of 3D, HD, widescreen, 7.1 surround sound — and that’s just in your living room! — it can be hard to fathom how revolutionary Fantasia was upon its theatrical release in 1940. Neither symphony hall concertgoers nor families headed to the movies to catch the latest Disney cartoon were prepared for the breadth and depth of color and sound. Walt Disney and conductor Leopold Stokowski — in collaboration with 1,000-plus artists, musicians and engineers at the Walt Disney Studio; the RCA Corporation; composer, author and commentator Deems Taylor; dozens of dancers; and the entire Philadelphia Orchestra — created a watershed cinematic experience that remains a visionary milestone to this day. Sadly, the expense of installing the Fantasound audio playback system in theaters, and the loss of the European market during World War II, nixed Walt Disney’s dream of an ongoing “Concert Feature,” wherein individual segments would be replaced by new ones. Though the Walt Disney Studio would utilize popular songs in several package films of the ’40s and ’50s, it would remain until 1999 and the release of Fantasia 2000, spearheaded by Disney’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, for a Disney-produced featurelength marriage of classical music and animation to reach the screen once again.

CLAUDE DEBUSSY

“Clair de lune” “Clair de lune” was fully recorded, animated and shot before being cut from Fantasia, ostensibly to shorten the overall running time of the film. The animation was later edited and released as part of the package film Make Mine Music (1946), accompanied by the popular song “Blue Bayou” (not to be confused with Roy Orbison’s later hit of the same name). Fortunately, a work print of the complete “Clair de lune” and a copy of Stokowski’s original performance survived and were reunited in a 1996 restoration. Walt Disney saw “Clair de lune” as a segment to stand in contrast to the others around it, a moment of reflection and repose. Its sustained, evocative, slightly mysterious mood, enhanced by remarkably fluid camera work following two herons in the moonlight, reveals the work of a studio at the top of its game.

IGOR STRAVINSKY Firebird Suite (1919 Version) Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird was considered but rejected for use in the original Fantasia in favor of another of his ballets, The Rite of Spring. (Stravinsky was the only living composer to have heard his composition in Fantasia.) But the appeal of The Firebird’s music held fast to the artists at the Disney studio. For Fantasia 2000, they crafted a story far removed from the original scenario of Stravinsky’s ballet: No longer a benevolent if capricious being, the Firebird is now a frightening, fiery sprit of destruction who seeks to destroy the forest home of a Spring Sprite and her companion elk. The look of the segment taps into anime sensibilities, as well as the real-life eruption of Mount St. Helens, all to the purpose of illustrating nature’s circle of life, death and rebirth.

AMILCARE PONCHIELLI Dance of the Hours Using such diverse touchstones as the animal caricatures of T.S. Sullivant and Heinrich Kley, and a George Balanchine ballet for the 1938 film The Goldwyn Follies, director T. Hee’s Dance of the Hours never fails to elicit gales of laughter. This loving parody of classical dance, “a pageant of the hours of the day,” begins with Ostrich Ballet: Morning, in which an ostrich corps de ballet is 28

awakened by Mlle. Upanova. Next comes Hippo Ballet: Afternoon, in which Hyacinth Hippo makes her first appearance. Elephant Ballet: Evening follows, wherein the corps executes an elaborate bubble dance. Next comes Alligator Ballet: Night. Here, Ben Ali Gator and Hyacinth Hippo dance a pas de deux unrivaled in the history of ballet. A grand finale brings down the house — literally! “The whole incongruity of the thing,” Walt Disney said, “is the elephants and hippos doing what graceful people do. Of course, they can use natural props like their trunks.”

PAUL DUKAS The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Less than a decade after Mickey Mouse’s arrival on the silver screen, Walt Disney felt that the popularity of his alter ego was waning and decided to feature him in a retelling of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, accompanied by Paul Dukas’ composition of the same name. A chance meeting between Disney and Leopold Stokowski led to the famed leader of the Philadelphia Orchestra agreeing to conduct at no cost. Disney envisioned a superior offering, with production values far above the usual Mickey Mouse or Silly Symphony cartoon. No expense was spared. By the time The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was completed, its budget was several times that of a normal Silly Symphony. Realizing he couldn’t get a return on his investment with a stand-alone cartoon, Disney decided to make The Sorcerer’s Apprentice the centerpiece of a “Concert Feature.” “When [Sorcerer] was almost finished,” Stokowski wrote, “Walt said to me: ‘Why don’t we make a bigger picture with all kinds of music?’ and that led to Fantasia.”

SIR EDWARD ELGAR Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 In looking for a piece of music for Fantasia 2000 that would be familiar to a wide-ranging audience, Disney artists hit upon the idea of using Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, a mainstay at high school and college graduations in the United States, and familiar in various other guises worldwide. Numerous story ideas were considered and rejected, including one that featured a royal procession of Disney princes and princesses presenting their offspring to Donald

SP E CI A L

Duck! After developing and discarding a concept that involved animating every Disney character ever created, it was decided that Donald should have a moment of hope and glory. A retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark, with Donald in the role of the patriarch, provided plenty of opportunities for marching — two-by-two, of course — as well as a variety of possibilities for the frustrating yet humorous incidents that are the bane of Donald’s existence.

OTTORINO RESPIGHI Pines of Rome Respighi’s Pines of Rome was one of the earliest segments of Fantasia 2000 green-lit for production. Just as the artists working on the original Fantasia stretched the boundaries of available technology, artists working on Pines of Rome were eager to show what could be accomplished with computer animation. Inspired by Roy Disney’s tales of piloting through cumulus thunderhead cloud formations, Disney artists combined elements of traditional handdrawn animation with computer-generated characters and environments to create a pod of flying humpback whales. As to what happens to the whales, the artists suggest that it’s up to the viewer’s interpretation. Roy Disney said, “Certainly it is about hope and rebirth, but there’s also a mystical quality to it that seems to transcend all that.” — Program notes ©2012 by Alexander Rannie, a composer and historian whose original scores include The Ren & Stimpy Show, Walt Disney’s Alice Comedies and Screen Novelties’ Monster Safari.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS BRANDI CARLILE Brandi Carlile has spent the better part of the last decade traversing the planet, bringing her music to an ever-growing fan following. From her earliest days on Seattle’s coffeehouse circuit, she has demonstrated an uncommon gift for connecting with fans. She has toured nonstop since the release of her self-titled debut album in 2005, growing her audience in a grassroots fashion with relatively little commercial support. Carlile’s fans are passionate about her music — and passionate about making a difference in the world, leading her to create the Looking Out Foundation in 2008. This philanthropic effort assists the chronically underserved by channeling hundreds of thousands of dollars and resources to organizations devoted to the arts, women’s

rights, public health, scientific research and the eradication of hunger. Carlile helps fund the Foundation by donating $1 from each concert ticket she sells, as well as performing at several benefit concerts annually. Carlile’s most recent recording, Bear Creek, is named for the converted turn-of-the-century barn in Woodinville, Washington, where the album was recorded. In March 2011, she brought co-producer Trina Shoemaker and members of her “road family” — including multi-instrumentalists/songwriters Phil and Tim Hanseroth, cellist Josh Neumann and drummer Allison Miller — to Bear Creek, and together they spent the next month recording. They veered off into new musical territory, fusing classic rock ’n’ roll, folk, bluegrass and “pure soul” to create their own distinctive sound. “When I was growing up, I didn’t think for a second that Bob Dylan wasn’t a country singer or that Johnny Cash wasn’t a rock ’n’ roll singer,” Carlile says. “What mattered was what they were saying and what the instruments sounded like behind them. They weren’t following any trends, they just sounded great.”

He attended Yale University, receiving a bachelor’s with academic distinction in intellectual history and then completing a master’s degree in clarinet performance under the tutelage of David Shifrin. Weinberger was resident conductor of the Louisville Orchestra for four seasons, and began his professional career as a cover and education conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra. He also directed the orchestra program at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he founded an adventurous chamber orchestra and led a number of new initiatives for teaching and presenting music to urban youth. A Gift That Costs You Nothing During Your Lifetime For as long as the Nashville Symphony has enriched people’s lives through the power of music, it has relied on the generosity and vision of friends to ensure its legacy for generations. Your planned gift can benefit you, your family, the Nashville Symphony and thousands who will experience extraordinary performances and numerous education and community programs in the years to come. A planned gift may be either a bequest or a life-benefit gift. A bequest is a gift made at death through your will or revocable trust. A life-benefit gift allows you to retain some benefit, such as income or use of your residence while you are living. Such a gift can benefit you or your heirs by postponing or eliminating tax liabilities. Upon your death, the Nashville Symphony receives the full benefit of your gift. If you already have a will, you can add the Nashville Symphony as a beneficiary simply by amending your will with a document known as a codicil. To learn more, visit NashvilleSymphony.org/GiftsFromWills If you do not have a will, please call Wade Kelley at the number above to obtain your free, no-obligation copy of Your Guide to Will and Estate Planning. A will is your opportunity to help the people and organizations that mean the most to you; to sort out your investments, real estate and other property; and to save taxes for your heirs. It’s the most important opportunity you’ll get in your life to tell the world what you want and how you want it done. 62
