SUMMER 2012

TAKE A SUMMER ROAD TRIP WITH US Roadtrips with friends, icecream on the beach, music festivals and long hot days - summer is our favourite time of year. In our very first issue of Glue Store Magazine, we introduce you to our world: what music we are listening to, our store staff and of course our favourite Glue Store summer fashion.

To get you inspired to pack your bags and head on a camping trip with friends check out our road trip inspired editorial shoot on page 26. It has us dreaming of endless summer holidays. We can’t wait to head down to the coast and lap up some summer sun! In our other editorial shoot we hit the studio with one of our favourite up-and-coming models LJ - keep your eye on her, we are predicting big things! It was a great day with our Sounds of Summer Playlist pumping (you can listen to it too - see page 24 for details). Also inside: our store staff show you how to wear the latest runway trends, we give you the run-down on our picks for the summer music festival season and get you up to speed with our latest product news.

WHAT'S HOT

Here at Glue Store, we’re always keeping our eyes peeled for the latest and greatest in men’s and women’s fashion from around the world, and bringing it back home for you to take your pick. From what’s dropping in stores around the country this season, here are our predictions for what’s going to be cool this summer at Glue Store. Make sure you head in-store or online to check them out.

HENLEYS

Shot on the sunny beaches of southern California, we are loving the SS12 campaign images from Henleys. Embracing the classic style of the US collegiate lifestyle, the collection makes us want to pack our bags and head off on an endless summer vacation. Mixing sports and athletic culture with classic and timeless designs, Henleys is all about creating a sense of history and tradition - clothes that you will keep wearing season after season.

JOE’S JEANS

For premium denim that’s often spotted on the coolest kids in LA, you can’t go past Joe’s Jeans. The cult denim label has been given the stamp of approval by a number of American it-girls including Rachel Bilson, Nicole Richie and the ever-fashionable Olsen twins. And now it’s available for denim loving girls at Glue Store. Founded in 2001, Joe’s cemented their position as front runners of the denim industry after introducing body-specific fits that are renowned for their slimming qualities. Genius! Joe’s Jeans are stocked at selected Glue Stores.

DENHAM

Originating from The Netherlands, Denham the Jeanmaker brings plenty of European cool to selected Glue Stores around the country. A label built on experimentation and innovation and sustained on the details, Denham makes jeans with thought and sincerity so that you get a product that will last you through the years.

MR BLACK

When you’re as addicted to your jeans as we are, it can be hard to find the time to peel them off and give them a good wash. So instead of waiting for them to wash, dry and then having to wear them in again so they’re nice and comfy, MR BLACK has come up with an ingenious denim cleaning spray so that you can avoid that crisp, tight feeling from your freshly washed denims.

WE LOVE WELL GROOMED MEN

Looking well groomed and gentlemanly isn’t just having a moment right now- it’s here to stay. Revisit those bygone eras when getting a haircut was a leisurely event and gather your boys club at an old school barber shop. For shaving, haircuts and all those manly, grooming needs, we’ve found four of the best barbershops around. Totally cool and very dapper, at these barbers you’ll get your grooming fix and might even be treated to a cold beer at the same time.

OFF THE CUFF

Trends in menswear come and go, but let’s face it guys- you’re always going to need a couple of cool tees to fall back on. And whether they’re a talking point to attract that girl across the room, a billboard for your amazing sense of humour, or your fail safe music festival uniform, Off The Cuff shirts are soon to become an essential in your wardrobe.

BAMBAM CLOTHING

Whoever said you can’t wear leggings as pants clearly never set their eyes on the amazing spandex creations of BamBam. The men’s and women’s brand has been on our fashion radar ever since it emerged out of sunny Brisbane for its energetic and spontaneous designs, but this season the gorgeous women’s leggings are our stand out pick. For pins that look like a work of art and will demand a second glance, you’ve got to slide on a pair of BamBam’s.

MAIANS

Maians slogan is 100% Hecho a Mano en España (100% Hand-Made in Spain). Combining natural raw material and artisan knowhow to create a superior product, each pair of Maians is in fact hand-made in Spain. The name comes from a barrier island just off-shore from Barcelona, that over the centuries, through landfills and excavation, became a peninsula, known today as the Barceloneta. This thriving beach community, where young surfer types live next to ancient mariners, is a micro community of Barcelona, and embodies the same urban hybrid of street style and tradition that go into every pair of Maians. Maians is stocked at selected Glue Stores.

THE RAGGED PRIEST

For girls who aren’t afraid to wear denim on denim, pair their scuffed Dr Martens with every outfit, and take a ‘the more the merrier’ approach when it comes to silver studs, we’ve got the perfect label for you. Feast your eyes on The Ragged Priest- the brand from Essex that we’re coming out and saying is probably the coolest label to come out of the UK…. ever. Starting out as a simple eBay store selling slashed up, studded second hand garments like cut off shorts, denim jackets and camo shirts, The Ragged Priest’s big attitude and look-atme designs have inspired a cult following and made them one of the most popular brands around. The Ragged Priest is stocked at selected Glue Stores.

URBAN CAMO

For the perfect festival look that gives nineties grunge a modern spin, you can’t go past a mix of leopard print, denim, leather and the all important camo print. Take on the urban jungle in a patchwork of prints, and don’t forget to give your look some tough love with accessories. Hardworking studded belts, zippered bags and embellished clutches ought to do the trick. Complete the look with a cool dose of attitude and you’re ready to take on the streets- army style! MIX IT UP

The art of mixing different colours and prints might seem daunting, but let us assure you that there’s only one rule when it comes to this menswear trend- anything goes! Clashing prints is actually a good thing in our book- just take a look at some of our favourite Glue Store pieces. This look can incorporate everything from stripes to checks to tie dye and batik print, using clashing to maximum visual effect, so throw the rulebook out the window and have some fun. Pair your shorts with some Vans and a printed backpack for extra points and you’re ready to take on summer.

We’re talking boys dressed in coloured chinos, raglan tees and crewneck jumpers for a simple style that’s clearly a winner. What makes the perfect tee or singlet? Shape, fabric and a feeling of expression. Anything that complements an outfit and makes you feel comfortable.

What are some of your favourite printed tee brands at Glue? Stussy, Zanerobe and Obey. What is the best way to wear printed tops? Matched back with a pair of chino shorts or jeans.

What styles are trending this season and how can guys wear them? The perfect white or basic tee is essential to match back with a pair of jeans, yardage shorts, chinos or jeans. At night, layer a basic white tee with a shirt and jacket to complete the look.

What is your pick for the best printed tee at Glue this season? Check out the Obey and Stussy tees instore that pay homage to the early 90s.

What should guys look for when shopping for a woven shirt? It all depends on how you feel in the shirt. If you are looking for casual, choose something light and loud. If you want to dress it up I would be looking for a nice short sleeve chambray that I can wear with shoes and jeans.

What can guys wear with printed shorts? Wear them with a basic tee or dress them up with a shirt. If you are brave, team up a printed short with a patterned woven shirt for a look that’s mismatched, yet bang on-trend.

What do you love about the woven shirt look? This season I love that 90s prints are coming in. A woven shirt is a great way to complement any outfit and can be dressed up or down. It’s an easy and uncomplicated piece for the male wardrobe.

What kind of shoes should guys pair them with? Depending on the situation, thongs, sneakers or for the more adventurous a pair of boots look great.

SUMMER FESTIVAL GUIDE

So it’s nearly summer, and that can only mean one thing- festivals! We can’t wait to peel off the layers and dust off our feather head-dresses to dance the days away in the summer sun with all the bands, facepaint, DJs and food truck tacos we can muster. With some killer line-ups already announced that will see some of the world’s biggest acts grace our shores, here’s our pick of the bunch.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

mens festival picks

In only its second year, organisers of our youngest festival impressed punters last year with its beautiful garden surroundings, artisan markets and array of whimsical art installations and attractions within the same grounds as massive international headliners such as The National and Portishead. Fevers are high again this year with the announcement of indie darlings Ben Folds Five, Beck, Silversun Pickups, The Dandy Warhols, Santigold, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, Cake and Sigur Ros for Harvest’s sophomore event. The festival was so popular following this killer line-up that a second Melbourne date has been added to the tour. Pack your wide-brim hat and your fanciest shades and chill out in the fields at Harvest in your city. When: Melbourne- Saturday, November 10 & Sunday November 11 (sold-out), Sydney - Saturday November 17 and Brisbane - Sunday November 18. Head to harvestfestival.com.au for event details.

Winter hibernation will well and truly end here, so strip off those woolly layers to hit the outdoors for Parklife. The first festie of the summer festival circuit, the dudes at Parklife are kicking things off in style with a truly vibrant and diverse line-up with dance royalty The Presets, Passion Pit, Nero, Plan B, Justice, Tame Impala, Robyn, Chiddy Bang, Chairlift, Hermitude, Parachute Youth, Wiley and a stack of emerging DJ talent from each city. When: Brisbane- Saturday September 29, Sydney- Sunday September 30, Perth – Monday October 1, Melbourne- Saturday September 6 and Adelaide – Sunday October 7. See all the event listings and full line-up for your city at parklife.com.au.

STEREOSONIC A great way to update the laid back summer classic of a simple singlet and shorts is to make a few switches. Cuffed chinos can replace denim cut offs and a singlet with deep arm holes, pocket detailing and a nautical stripe makes a fresh take on a basic tee- you’ll look and feel cool in this outfit.

Australia’s premier dance music festival, Stereosonic will once again provide electronic junkies with their dose of the world’s best house, techno, party and chill-wave beats thanks to international sensations Avicii, Tiesto, Bassnectar, Carl Cox, Example, Major Lazer, Calvin Harris, Martin Solveig, Diplo, Flux Pavilion and plenty more. Denim minis and neon midriff tops may be a hit here, but remember hydration and sunscreen are the best festival accessories. When: Sydney – Saturday November 24, Perth – Sunday November 25, Melbourne – Saturday December 1, Adelaide – Saturday December 1, Brisbane – Sunday December 2. Head to stereosonic.com for more details.

MEREDITH MUSIC FESTIVAL The organisers behind this year’s Meredith Music Festival have been thoroughly preparing the finest, wildest and craziest line-up the musical world has to offer in the case the world comes to an apocalyptic end according to ancient Mayan prophecy. They’re sure not taking any risks providing legends Primal Scream, Four Tet, Grimes, Spiritualized, Sunnyboys, Turbonegro and local heart-throb Chet Faker, Twerps and psychedelic newcomers, Pond, to the stage of Meredith’s Supernatural Ampitheatre. Over three days and two starry nights, Meredith’s purpose built wonderland is proudly the same size and price as last year (and year before that), no commercial sponsors, a no-dickhead policy and allows byo. Be as creative with your campsite as possible to get the most out your time in the grassy meadows and accessories such as floral headbands are a must! When: Melbourne – December 7, 8 & 9. Check out 2012.mmf.com.au for all the event info.

FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL The most epic camping festival of the New Year period, there is no substitute to bringing in a brand new year than with friends and great live music in the luxurious setting of Lorne in Victoria, or the picturesque Marion Bay in Tasmania. Soak up the sun over three days and camp with your besties in the wilderness, or pick-up a two day pass to be there with some of the year’s most worthy acts as they count down to 2013. Two Door Cinema Club will be making their way to Australia as well as the Flaming Lips, The Vaccines, Beach House, Best Coast, Bombay Bicycle Club, Coolio, SBTRKT, Hot Chip, The Hives and local favourites Hilltop Hoods, Angus Stone, Boy & Bear, Matt Corby and Lisa Mitchell. Jeans and denim jackets are a must for the cold evenings, while floral dresses and Docs or Vans are a staple for the festival’s hot days. ST JEROME’S LANEWAY FESTIVAL Birthed in 2004 from its original home within an actual laneway, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival has since become one of the most forward thinking festivals, consistently delivering cutting edge lineups that favour talent over mainstream success. Set in glorious, industrial settings across Australia, the last Laneway featured M83, Active Child, The Drums, Cults, Laura Marling, Feist, SBTRKT and The Horrors. The rumour mill is currently in overdrive with who will be announced next, but organisers revealed via Twitter that some of the newest and brightest local acts have already been confirmed. Stay tuned to lanewayfestival.com.au for details. When: February, 2013 in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Auckland and Singapore.

Get a festival ready look like Kate Bosworth with a simple tee and shorts combo. Adding tough luxe accessories like a gold chain bag, studded belt and lace up combat boots will give you some edgy street cred.

Canadian artist Claire Boucher, better known by her stage name Grimes, has just released her third album titled Visions and it’s being hailed as one of the most impressive albums of the year. Grimes describes her electric mix of styles as ‘ADD music’, using primarily keyboards and synthesizers along with ethereal vocals and expert layering techniques.

This English indie pop band formed in 2008 while studying at Elliot School in London. The band released their debut album XX in August 2009 and have recently released their second album Coexist in September this year. The band recorded their first album in a small garage in London and their tracks have been widely used on television shows and mainstream media.

THE RUBENS

Aussie brothers Zacc, Elliot and Sam have teamed up with childhood friend Scott to form The Rubens. Their debut single Lay It Down scored the Triple J Unearthed spot in 2011, and the guys impressed the crowds at this year’s Splendour in the Grass. Their self-titled debut album was released this month, as the guys hit the road for their national tour.

FRANK OCEAN

From New Orleans, Louisiana, Christopher Francis Ocean has ghost written for artists such as Justin Bieber, John Legend and Brandy. Ocean’s distinctive style mixes electronic keyboards with a subdued R&B rhythm, with a vocal style which hovers between speech and song. Ocean can also boast GQ’s Rookie of the Year for 2011 and has been nominated for various music awards for 2011 and 2012.

CHAIRLIFT Breaking out in Australia with their catchy-as hell track, Bruises in 2008, the ever-evolving Brooklyn synth-pop duo, Chairlift, have spent the last six months touring the world following the release of their second album, Something earlier this year. Taking on every festival from Laneway to Lollapalooza, South By Southwest and Primavera , Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly are expanding the band to embark on a national tour of the US with Gotye, before heading back to our golden shores for Parklife this October. What have you been up to in your short break while home in New York? Caroline: We actually just got back from a fitting at Prada. We’re playing their fashion week party that they are throwing in New York at the store. We’re so excited. I’m wearing their very signature Prada ‘70s print mismatched bell bottom pants and belted top - and crazy shoes! Speaking of fashion, how do you find dressing for festivals compared to club shows? C: I feel festival shows are really different for wardrobe than club shows – the main difference is how close I am to people. If I’m in a club I can consider things like prints and textures a lot more than I do for festivals. When you’re on a festival stage you’re like a tiny ant, you’re so far away, so I think more about big shapes and whether it’s daytime or night time. One of my favourite festival outfits from the summer was when we played in Portugal for Primavera Festival – I wore a mini skirt that looked like Japanese Origami with a sports bra and matching karate belt. In shapes like that when it’s hot in the summer you can get away with showing a bit more skin. What has been your favourite festival experience so far? C: There’s nothing like your first – we played Bonnaroo (Tennessee, USA) just after our first record came out and I remember being so nervous and shaking like a leaf. Right before our big set I randomly met Solange Knowles, and she came and told us she was a big Chairlift fan. I said, ‘you should sing with us tonight’, and I didn’t entirely expect her to, but she showed up with a

choreographed set of hand movements and sang with us! It was amazing, and from that point on in the set it was like, no fear, it was a purely fun time. Do the boroughs of New York influence your style? C: I don’t get very directly inspired fashion-wise from New York; I think most of my references are things I find on the internet. Then I go hunting for them in New York. Sometimes it’s really expensive but if you dig deep enough, you can find just about anything. What sort of preparations are happening ahead of your tour with Gotye? C: We have a brand new synth player who I am really excited about – she has an amazing sense of style so it’ll be fun to be sharing a room with another girl while on tour. We’re in the middle of teaching her our songs, which is actually really hard for me because I write the synth lines very unconsciously, and I have a particular visualisation of all the sounds. When I have to teach it to someone, I realise how little logic there is to a lot of it and sometimes I have to give her visual explanations for why certain sounds change in certain parts and things. It would actually be a pretty funny process for someone to go through. Glue: Will you be starting work on new material soon? Yeah definitely. I don’t want to talk too much about it because it’s still kind of a secret, but we’re definitely working on new material!

Pack your bags, leave work early, grab your friends and jump in the car. It’s time for a summer road trip.
