Glyndebourne 10-31 October
Guaranteed to be a performance of note.
Proud sponsors of Glyndebourne Tour 2015
This year, two of our productions come direct from the Festival – created over the summer but re-staged with completely new casts, they follow the thorough rehearsal process that is such a distinctive feature of all our work. Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) was last presented on the Glyndebourne Tour in 1997 (and in the Festival in 1988), and is always a popular choice with our audiences. The themes in the opera, and the way it deals with the clash of cultures between East and West, feel particularly topical today and Mozart takes evident delight in bringing a distinctive Turkish colour to his music. Glyndebourne favourite David McVicar directs his first Mozart for the company – an exciting prospect. Handel’s Saul is not, strictly speaking, an opera but an oratorio. However, those who were lucky enough to see Peter Sellars’ moving Glyndebourne production of Theodora will know that the dramatic power of an oratorio can be just as overwhelming. Certainly, Saul has all the passion and emotion we expect from opera, as well as a starring role for the wonderful Glyndebourne Chorus.

Mariame Clément’s production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale was highly acclaimed when it opened on the Tour in 2011 and I am delighted it is part of Tour 2015. It is a jewel of an opera – with an infectious energy to the music and a story that combines great comedy with more sinister undertones. The 2015 Tour marks the first year of our new funding agreement with Arts Council England and we are immensely grateful to them for continuing to support our work. This will also be the fourth year of Tour sponsorship from the Daily Mail who are not only contributing to our core costs, but also working with us to seek out new audiences for our work. Without this additional public and private support we would not be able to fulfil our ambitious programme.

Tour 2015
Welcome to Tour 2015
Don Pasqu Directed by Mariame Clément, this opulent period staging catches the sparkling essence of Donizetti’s tuneful tale of an old bachelor’s romantic delusions and the young lovers who outwit him. Pasquale, a man no longer in the first flush of youth, hopes to marry and produce an heir, being dissatisfied with the current holder of that position, his nephew Ernesto, who has

had the audacity to fall in love with Norina, an impoverished widow. The plot thickens, twists and turns as Pasquale’s supposed friend Dr Malatesta assists Ernesto and Norina in complex and increasingly vindictive deception. Don Pasquale’s witty musical score combines graceful lyricism with rollicking comedy, all fuelled by the seductive rhythm of the waltz.

Die Entführung is considered Mozart’s first fully mature opera and boasts some of his most spectacularly virtuosic vocal music, particularly for its brave heroine. Inspired by the 18th-century vogue for all things Eastern, Die Entführung tells the tale of the young Spanish nobleman Belmonte as he attempts to rescue his fiancé Konstanze from the seraglio (harem) of Pasha Selim, a Turkish despot. Aided by his servant Pedrillo who wishes to be reunited with Konstanze’s maid Blonde, they set out to outwit the fearsome Osmin with their flight, but instead fall to the mercy of the Pasha.

This powerful production delves deep into Handel’s grand setting of the well-known Biblical tale of the first King of Israel’s love and loathing for his eventual successor, David. We watch Saul crumble before our eyes, as dramatically as Shakespeare’s King Lear, as he watches David win everyone’s heart – including that of his son, Jonathan.
The first of Handel’s great English oratorios, Saul promises to be an evening of dramatic choruses, bravura solo singing and the famous ‘Dead March’. Transferring direct from Festival 2015, this is the first production from the brilliant, provocative Australian director, Barrie Kosky, at Glyndebourne.

This year we will be screening Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd.* The tense and stifling atmosphere on board a British man of war ship during the Napoleonic wars, with discipline brutally enforced and danger of attack ever present, is powerfully evoked in this highly acclaimed production by Michael Grandage.
