2010 season
MOZART don giovanni Monteverdi The Coronation of Poppea Rossini LA CENERENTOLA Welcome to Glyndebourne on Tour Welcome to the Glyndebourne on Tour 2010 season which is the first under the tenure of our new Tour Music Director, Jakub Hrůša. We heard some thrilling and inspired conducting when Jakub led performances of Carmen with us in 2008 and I have no doubt that his period as Music Director will be one of exceptional music making. Together with Jakub, I am delighted that the conductors on this year’s Tour reinforce one of our key aspirations of offering young artists a platform to develop their skills. Jonathan Cohen, making his Glyndebourne debut conducting The Coronation of Poppea, is building a strong reputation as one of the next generation of fine musicians in the early music field. Enrique Mazzola, the outstanding young Italian conductor who made such an impressive book from Monday 14 June 2010
Glyndebourne debut during the 2007 Tour, returns to conduct La Cenerentola. Thanks to the Arts Council of England’s continuing generous support, we are able to extend the Tour to new audiences through schools matinee performances at Glyndebourne and Stoke-on-Trent, offering tickets to our burgeoning Under 30s scheme and, for the first time, family tickets for performances in Glyndebourne and Plymouth. The overwhelming loyalty of audiences is essential to the success of the Tour – so my renewed thanks for your continued support, and I very much hope you will find much to enjoy in 2010. A new production from the 2010 Festival Sung in Italian with English supertitles The performance lasts approximately three hours fifteen minutes including a twenty minute interval.
ovanni The blackest of Mozart’s comedies, Don Giovanni charts the last 24 hours in the life of the legendary seducer Don Juan, before he meets his heaven-sent end in a closing scene of hell and damnation that remains one of the most profoundly shocking moments in opera. Directed and designed by the awardwinning team behind the 2009 Festival’s spectacular staging of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Glyndebourne’s long-awaited new production of Mozart’s most demonic masterpiece is conducted by the new Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour, the young Czech-born maestro ° Jakub Hruša.

Introducing the cast Making his UK opera debut in the title role is prize-winning young Norwegian baritone Audun Iversen. Leporello, his score-keeping servant, is sung by the Canadian bass-baritone Robert Gleadow, a graduate of Covent Garden’s Young Artists Programme, who makes his Glyndebourne Festival debut this year. As the abandoned Donna Elvira, we welcome the award-winning Chicago-born soprano Nicole Heaston. And, as the avenging Donna Anna, we have Natasha Jouhl (Micaëla in the 2008 Tour’s Carmen) who was winner of the 2009 John Christie Award.

A revival of the 2005 Festival production Sung in Italian with English supertitles The performance lasts approximately three hours including a twenty minute interval.
rentola Rossini’s take on the Cinderella story is no simplistic fairy tale. There’s no pumpkin coach and no glass slipper, and in place of a fairy godmother there’s a wise old philosopher who wants his handsome Prince to marry not just the fairest of them all but also the best and the kindest. Yet, while reason and realism prevail, there’s no shortage of magical enchantment in Rossini’s miraculous score, which happily marries high comedy and heartfelt emotion, before climaxing with one of the most dazzling coloratura showpieces in all bel canto opera. The critics adored Sir Peter Hall’s 2005 Festival staging: ‘This is a performance that meets the Glyndebourne gold standard … understated, sensitive and thus deeply pleasurable’ (The Daily Telegraph); ‘sheer entertainment kissed by genius’ (The Mail on Sunday). For this revival, we welcome back the stylish Spanish maestro Enrique Mazzola, conductor of L’elisir d’amore on the 2007 Tour.

Introducing the cast The roles of Cinderella (Angelina) and her Prince (Don Ramiro) are taken by the young Canadian mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy – of whose 2004 debut recital the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, ‘if her future holds anything but stardom, I’ll be very much surprised’ – and the highflying Brazilian tenor Luciano Botelho, whose recent appearance at the Royal Opera won plaudits for his ‘spirited and fresh-voiced’ approach (Daily Telegraph). Jonathan Veira (our larger-than-life Falstaff on last year’s Tour) and Paul Whelan (former Glyndebourne Chorus member and Marcello in La Bohème on the 1995 Tour) return as Cinderella’s monstrous stepfather Don Magnifico and the wonder-working philosopher Alidoro.

With Cupid on her side and sex as her weapon, no power on earth or in heaven can resist Poppea’s relentless rise from imperial mistress to empress of Rome. The first opera ever to tackle a reallife rather than a mythological theme, Claudio Monteverdi’s seductively sensual swansong blows the dust off ancient Roman history to reveal a rogues’ gallery of all-too-human characters, where the ‘good’ are as flawed as the ‘bad’ and ultimately it’s lust and ambition that win the day.
Introducing the cast The ‘exquisite’ German soprano Christiane Karg makes her UK opera debut as Poppea, alongside prize-winning South African counter-tenor Christopher Ainslie as her rejected lover Ottone and Italian mezzo Lucia Cirillo (a ‘volcanically sensual’ Dorabella in the 2009 Tour’s Così fan tutte) as the degenerate emperor Nero.
First seen at the 2008 Festival, Robert Carsen’s staging was hailed in the press as ‘truly adult, intelligent, subtle and strongly focused’ (The Daily Telegraph). Young British conductor Jonathan Cohen assisted on the 2008 run and more recently conducted Les Arts Florissants in the Paris and New York transfers of Glyndebourne’s The Fairy Queen.

The Touring venues that host our performances are crucial in helping this ambition become a reality.
