‘Simply the greatest all-round opera experience available in this country’

BBC Music Magazine

Glyndebourne on Tour: 2011 season Welcome to Glyndebourne on Tour 2011 Glyndebourne’s commitment to delivering opera of the highest quality is at the heart of all we do, and I am confident that the calibre of artistic talent that makes up this year’s Tour will guarantee world-class performances across the country this autumn. Four years ago a highly successful production of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore was premiered as part of Glyndebourne on Tour, and this year we present a new staging of the composer’s other great comic masterpiece Don Pasquale. Mariame Clément, who is building a reputation as one of Europe’s most talented and imaginative young directors, stages her first production in the UK. David McVicar’s production of La bohème, which received its premiere on the Tour in 2000, returns with a tantalisingly young and talented cast, many of whom have graduated from the Glyndebourne Chorus and are forging exciting careers. The trio of acclaimed opera directors is completed by Robert Carsen, whose production of The Coronation of Poppea in the 2010 Tour was rapturously received. His new production of Handel’s Rinaldo, produced by Glyndebourne for the first time, will come direct from the 2011 Festival. At Glyndebourne there are two new initiatives I would like to highlight. The first is the refurbishment of the Ebert Room, which many of you will know as the room where you attend pre-performance talks. PUBLIC bookING from 15 June 2011

The extensive renovation will offer a state-ofthe-art space for these and other audience events, as well as being used for rehearsals, workshops and education projects. Secondly, as part of Glyndebourne’s environmental considerations, the audience coaches from Lewes train station to and from the opera will be free, which I hope will encourage as many of you as possible to come to Glyndebourne by public transport. The 2011 Tour is made possible thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, who share our passion and commitment in presenting world-class opera at affordable prices to as broad an audience as possible. We are particularly grateful to the Daily Mail for their enlightened sponsorship of this year’s Tour, which has allowed us to continue the range and scope of our work including an extensive education programme and reduced price tickets for young people. I would also like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the exceptional generosity of Handel and Yvonne Evans in supporting Don Pasquale. The enthusiasm and support of the Glyndebourne on Tour audiences continues to astound us and, never more than in these difficult economic times, can I stress our thanks for your continued loyalty. A genius of emotional manipulation, Puccini’s exploration of the joy, anguish and heartbreak of young love has become one of the most popular operas of all time. The bohemian setting – a garret inhabited by young poets, philosophers and musicians – forms the background to Rodolfo’s first meeting with the consumptive heroine, Mimì. It is love at first sight. However, painfully aware of the constraints of his poverty, Rodolfo leaves Mimì, imploring her to take refuge in the arms of someone with the means to help her. The tragic finale sees them reunited as Mimì reaches out to Rodolfo in her dying hours.

First seen on the Tour in 2000, David McVicar’s acclaimed production tells a modern love story, adding a worldly realism to Puccini’s heartbreaking score. This revival is conducted by Glyndebourne on Tour’s Music ° Director Jakub Hruša. Brazilian tenor Atalla Ayan and American soprano Keri Alkema – two award-winning rising stars from the international stage – make their Glyndebourne debuts in the roles of Rodolfo and Mimì. They perform alongside John Christie Award recipient Natasha Jouhl (Musetta), most recently seen at Glyndebourne as Donna Anna in last year’s Tour production of Don Giovanni.

A NEW PRODUCTION FOR THE 2011 TOUR Sung in Italian with English supertitles. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes including one interval of 20 minutes.

An instant hit across Europe following its premiere in 1843, Don Pasquale earned Donizetti the title ‘comic genius’. Heralded for its lyrical characterisation and witty exploration of greed and matrimony, this classic opera buffa remains one of the composer’s most popular works. When Don Pasquale is unable to convince his nephew Ernesto to marry for money rather than love, he embarks on a mission to find himself a bride, produce an heir and thereby deprive Ernesto of his large inheritance. Dr. Malatesta, recognising the unhappy fate that would befall any woman in the clutches of this old fool, concocts a plan to dupe the wealthy bachelor. A series of highly comic encounters ensue, as the greed of the increasingly battered and bewildered Don Pasquale is exposed. Staged by Glyndebourne on Tour for the first time, this biting comedy of manners is led by internationally acclaimed director Mariame Clément, who makes her Glyndebourne debut. It is conducted by Enrique Mazzola, who delighted audiences on last year’s Tour with his lively interpretation of Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Bass-baritone Jonathan Veira takes the role of Don Pasquale, following the success of his comic portrayal of Don Magnifico in last year’s production of La Cenerentola. This production is generously supported by Handel and Yvonne Evans.

La Belle dame sans merci by John William Waterhouse, Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt, Germany/The Bridgeman Art Library

In 2011 Glyndebourne celebrates the genius of Handel with its first staging of Rinaldo, the work with which he made his sensational London debut – and the first Italian opera specifically created for the British stage. Loosely based on Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberate – a wildly fantastical fictionalisation of the Christian ‘liberation’ of Jerusalem during the First Crusade – the opera draws on a love story between the knight Rinaldo and the beauty Almirena. Separated from Almirena by powerful spirits, Rinaldo goes into battle to claim back his love and conquer the city.

Handel’s spectacular tale of love, honour and righteousness is directed by Robert Carsen, familiar to Tour audiences from last year’s acclaimed production of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea. Rinaldo’s richly enticing score is conducted by Laurence Cummings, one of Britain’s foremost early music specialists. Winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Prize in 2006, British soprano Elizabeth Watts makes her Glyndebourne debut as Almirena. She performs opposite Christophe Dumaux in the title role, whom audiences may remember from his sensational debut as Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare (2005 Festival).
