Performances at Glyndebourne 4 - 26 October

Enjoy this magical performance Proud sponsors of Glyndebourne Tour 2014

This year Glyndebourne celebrates its 80th anniversary. Although the Tour began some years after our summer Festival, the stories that are emerging from the past eight decades highlight how central it has become to both audiences and artists – bringing world-class performances to people across the UK and offering wonderful opportunities for the next generation of international singers. If you are new to Glyndebourne, welcome – we hope you’ll have a memorable first encounter. In Tour 2014 you’ll find exceptional and affordable opera, delivered with the same commitment to quality that marks all of Glyndebourne’s work. Of this year’s productions, La traviata and La finta giardiniera both come direct from the Festival – one operatic classic and one lesser-known gem – while our third offering, The Turn of the Screw, brings Britten’s classic ghost story back to the Tour in Jonathan Kent’s highly acclaimed production. Don’t miss our range of additional activities, including the special Family Day for younger audiences – find out more on page 16. To our loyal Tour audience, especially Tour Supporters, thank you – your enduring support ensures that this vital part of our work continues to thrive. We hope you’ll enjoy the mix of new and established productions, and that opportunity to be the first to spot some of opera’s rising stars.

TOUR 2014

Welcome to Tour 2014

La traviata, the fallen woman. Does that phrase still have relevance today? For Verdi it was a subject of intense personal significance. He and the singer Giuseppina Strepponi lived together for ten years before they married, enduring the objections of those who viewed her as a woman of no worth or moral standing. Violetta, the fallen woman of the title, is a vividly real, flesh-and-blood creation. She suffers from the consumption which will inevitably kill her but which, in the view of the time, brought with it a feverish intensity and heightened erotic impulse. Life, for her, is to be grasped with both hands and lived to the full.

The character is based on Marie Duplessis, mistress of Alexandre Dumas fils, who fictionalised her in his novel La Dame aux camélias. When another writer, Marcel Proust, saw La traviata, he wrote: ‘It’s a work which goes straight to my heart. Verdi has given it the style it lacked … for a dramatic work to touch popular sentiment the addition of music is essential.’ That music was written by Verdi at the peak of his powers. It is lyrical, heartbreaking and unforgettable, appealing directly to the emotions and resulting in an opera that invents itself anew for every generation.

La finta gia The first performance of this opera took place in January 1775, a few weeks before the composer’s 19th birthday. Mozart’s brilliance flowered astonishingly early and all his brightest powers of invention are on display here.

Mozart contrives dazzling music around a plot which alternates between high comedy and serious drama. Seven characters, each in search of true love, enter a maze of delusion and confusion, from which they emerge sadder but wiser.

Before the opera begins Sandrina, the Marchesa Violante, has been attacked and left for dead by her jealous lover, Belfiore. Disguising herself as a gardener, she enters the employment of a small-town mayor and the scene is set for a complex tale of mistaken identity, thwarted passion and heartbreak.

There is a deep uneasiness that lies beneath all this complexity, tipping some of the characters into genuine madness. Is Sandrina mad to want Belfiore back when he has tried to kill her? Does she try to drive him insane as part of the price he has to pay for their ultimate reconciliation? Does love make everyone crazy?

‘The ceremony of innocence is drowned.’ These words, taken from a poem by WB Yeats, are the central motif for Benjamin Britten’s opera. Two children are at the core of the story, Miles and Flora. Has their innocence been fatally corrupted? Have they become possessed by malign forces? Are they essentially evil? Based on the story by Henry James, the opera draws on every nuance of the original’s insidious subtlety, its depiction of a strangely disturbed atmosphere, of hidden horrors and ambiguities. There are ghosts but are they real manifestations or have they been conjured up by the disturbed imagination of the governess who has been appointed to look after the children?

8 GLYNDEBOURNE.COM

Twining itself throughout the work is the music that Britten writes for the children, deceptively simple and hauntingly strange and sinister. Nursery rhymes become incantations and the familiar words of psalms from the Bible are disturbingly distorted. The screw turns and keeps turning, ever tighter… Described by the Independent on Sunday as ‘one of Glyndebourne’s most provocative and accomplished productions’, The Turn of the Screw was first seen as part of Tour 2006 and is revived with a cast of rising stars including award-winning Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw in the role of the Governess and Jerwood Young Artist (2010) Anthony Gregory as Peter Quint.

Tour cinema screenings Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen Extend your Tour 2014 experience by enjoying Glyndebourne on screen as well as on stage this autumn – our cinema screenings, in selected Tour locations, give you access to works which, because of their scale, Glyndebourne will never be able to take on the road. This year Melly Still’s playful production of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen provides the perfect Sunday afternoon escape for all the family… Perhaps the only opera to be inspired by a newspaper cartoon strip, every morning Janáček would catch up with the latest exploits of the mischievous vixen Bystrouška. He became such a dedicated follower of her adventures that he responded with an outpouring of music which evokes the 14 GLYNDEBOURNE.COM

wooded rolling hills of the composer’s homeland of Moravia. Melly Still’s ‘colourful and joyous’ (Wall Street Journal) Festival 2012 interpretation makes the Vixen’s encounter with life in the forest both heart breaking and humorous, and painfully real.
