We love touring. It’s a massive undertaking. Sets in and out on a daily basis, technicians, singers, actors, dancers and orchestra arriving and going. Each audience is different, each venue has a unique flavour. For us, it’s exciting to feel how the performances alter – it’s live: your reaction affects the show in real time. When you’re discussing the performance in the interval, guess what: the performers are discussing the audience reaction. This year, for the first time in 40 years, the Tour is visiting Liverpool. We are excited to be back and reboot our commitment to this great city, and, with Welsh National Opera, Opera North and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, to be a part of building a year-round programme of opera for a new audience. For Tour 2019 we are presenting Rigoletto – one of the best-loved operas – for the very first time. It’s one of those operas where even if you’ve never seen it before you find you know half the music: and it is very hard to avoid singing along. The brilliant young director Christiane Lutz leaves the 16th century and Mantua far behind in her fresh new interpretation of Verdi’s great tragedy. Add to this two of our most popular productions – Annabel Arden’s hilarious L’elisir d’amore and Robert Carsen’s imaginative Rinaldo – and you have a classic Glyndebourne mix. For over 50 years, the Tour has nurtured young, rising talent on stage and in the orchestra pit. This year is no different and as an added bonus the Tour Orchestra will support and play alongside up to ten young instrumentalists as part of our Pit Perfect scheme. Without the support of Arts Council England our Tour and education work would not be possible, so we thank them for their continued funding. Whether you are new to opera or a seasoned regular, Tour 2019 has something exciting to offer. We're looking forward to hitting the road and seeing you there! Stephen Langridge ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Rigoletto
GI USEPPE VER D I
he Duke has it all: money, power, looks, and any woman he wants – any woman, that is, except Gilda, the innocent young daughter of hunchbacked jester Rigoletto. But when Gilda is kidnapped and seduced by his master, Rigoletto plots revenge – with tragic results. Verdi’s own favourite opera, Rigoletto is a tragedy of Shakespearean scope, a disturbing psychological portrait of a man caught in a corrupt world, an outsider in a system built on power and privilege. A dramatic score, heavy with menace, includes many of Verdi’s greatest tunes, including ‘La donna è mobile’. Christiane Lutz directs Glyndebourne’s first ever production, reimagining Verdi’s classic drama for our own age. After his ‘marvellous’ Pinkerton in 2016’s Madama Butterfly, Matteo Lippi returns to the Glyndebourne Tour as the seductive, powerhungry Duke. Georgian baritone Nikoloz Lagvilava makes his Glyndebourne debut as Rigoletto, with prize-winning South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu as his daughter Gilda, and Oleg Budaratskiy as assassin Sparafucile.
Would you like to be part of a dedicated Circle of supporters who bring Rigoletto to Glyndebourne for the very first time? To find out more about how you can support the production, contact our Development Team on +44(0)1273 815 400 or development@glyndebourne.com 4

ophisticated and wealthy, Adina is the toast of her small Italian town. Country boy Nemorino loves her, but she only has eyes for Belcore, the smooth-talking sergeant who has swept her off her feet. So when a travelling doctor arrives in town Nemorino pins all his hopes on a magical love potion. But nothing in this topsy-turvy comedy is ever quite as it seems… Light, lyrical and bursting with energy, L’elisir d’amore was the biggest success of Donizetti’s career – a comedy with the softest of hearts and the sweetest of melodies, including Nemorino’s much-loved aria ‘Una furtive lagrima’. Updating the action to the 1940s, Annabel Arden’s production celebrates the opera’s original joyful, colourful spirit, painting an affectionate picture of an Italy on the brink of political change. Korean tenor Sehoon Moon stars as the lovesick Nemorino, with Glyndebourne debuts from soprano Benedetta Torre as the flirtatious Adina and baritone Matthew Durkan as rival suitor Belcore. Ben Glassberg, Principal Conductor of the Glyndebourne Tour, conducts.

hristian knight Rinaldo loves Almirena, but she has been kidnapped by the scheming sorceress Armida. A magical battle of wits and wills ensues between Rinaldo’s Crusaders and the Saracen army, as the fate not just of two lovers but two nations hangs in the balance. Robert Carsen’s exuberant schoolroom staging is well on its way to becoming a Glyndebourne classic, bringing out all the energy and excess in Handel’s first opera for the London stage. The composer’s colourful, tune-filled score – bright with brass fanfares and memorable arias including Lascia ch’io pianga – is one of his finest, sweeping the audience from laughter to love and back again, in this exotic, East-meets-West musical fantasy. Two young British singers lead the cast. Countertenor Jake Arditti takes the title role and Anna Devin, who played Michal in Glyndebourne Festival’s 2018 revival of Saul, is Almirena. American soprano Jacquelyn Stucker makes her Glyndebourne debut as Armida, with bass-baritone Aubrey Allicock as Saracen king Argante.
