GLYN PETER MACHIN English born designer Glyn Peter Machin holds the unique position of being the only non Danish born national to be awarded the distinguished working title MDD. This respected title awarded to only 1000 designers to date has help Glyn earn the respect of Danish designers and architects in a country renowned for its exceptionally high standards within all aspects of design. It did not come easy and took years of studying with a Danish architect studio to be able to

reach the level of design education required to apply for MDD status. This additional education coupled with his English qualifications as a furniture maker and designer gave Glyn the confidence to open his own studio and leap into the competitive and rewarding international world of design. Today Glyn Peter Machin A/S design between & beyond wallsÂŽ is a highly respected and sought after multi discipline design and product development studio. Located within the beautiful east cost provincial town of Kolding,

Denmark Glyn employs a staff of 4 highly qualified multi lingual individuals. Housed in a classic triple storey 1930´s Danish villa the studio functions as both home and workplace for Glyn. 120sqmtr of raw finished rare wide plank Oregon pine decks the Scandinavian influenced combined work and product display area. The ever evolving product displays are cleverly intergrated into the workspace providing an informal casual meeting place for visiting clients, collaborating architects, interior designers and

other trade professionals. From this beautiful and relaxed setting Glyn and his team design, develop and manage production of the studios own brand of luxury products as well as simultaneously creating designs, products and interior/exterior living environments for clients worldwide.

DELUXE

Midas recently visited Glyn in Denmark to talk about his studios growing reputation with the luxury marine sector, his close collaboration with Gordon Scott head of Summit Furniture Europe and to see first hand the stunning brand of furniture and accessories being developed at the studio. The Glyn Peter Machin brand of interior & exterior furniture and accessories posses unquestionable class and this energetic studio is fast becoming the most sought after studio to design and develop custom products for super yachts and residences globally. Being a flexible fast moving team with established manufacturing partners in Europe and Asia the studio are able to offer total functionality to its branded products and create custom pieces or small series for clients seeking individuality for its veranda, exclusive hotel, private residence or luxury yacht. The quality is exceptional. When seated in and surrounded by Glyn´s products at his studio one cannot fail to notice the emphasis on comfort and quality of the highest level. “We don’t cut corners and a great deal of our

work is literally hand made. For example the curved slats on our Oceansand series are all individually hand made, all have a different radius and curve in 2 directions making it impossible to machine. But we wanted the dual direction shape and to retain the curvaceous sweeping profiles we are known for. Unfortunately this equates to a cost but our clients understand our designs and appreciate what we strive to achieve for them. Our V series encompasses solid bar stainless steel and up to 5mm thick hides. Our teak features thick solid components. We avoid lamination as much as possible unless the design or structure calls for it” The uniqueness of this studio doesn’t stop there. They excel equally in both interior and exterior products and produce a stunning collection of mouth blown vessels. Running concurrently with new interior and exterior furniture designs the studio are working on a

OCEANSAND series of lamps as well as a new tableware series. The studio also designs and develops products under license agreement for clients such as Donghia Furniture/Textiles, McGuire Furniture, HBF, DelGreo & Company and Summit Furniture. Full size prototyping and

manufacturing management for clients completes the development area of the studios work whereas a full CAD, 3D visualization and 21st century rapid prototyping modeling service completes the overall disciplines offered to all clients.Whilst a very similar company

to all of their current licensees in terms of the deluxe products created the only difference seems to be size and flexibility. Whilst such companies carry staff in the 50nr -100nr region they simply cannot offer the design turn around and custom flexibility offered by Glyn´s small team of highly qualified staff.

rior environments. Recent commissions include a hillside villa in Cannes, South of France, 25 rooms for a private residence in Regents Park, London, a 30 room Ottoman inspired villa on the outskirts of Istanbul, Turkey and one of a kind pieces for clients in New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Hong Kong and Moscow.

“A perfect example of this is that of a Russian client who recently visited one of our licensees showrooms asking for a variation of chair they admired. Unfortunately the licensee was unable offer anything different or customized as their collections are set once launched and invariably only launch something new every 2-3 years. However, the licensee kindly recommended our studio and within 2 days of receiving client instructions we had designed a series of chairs, tables and daybeds to match their requirements.”

Among the impressive list of licensees the studio collaborates with is a long term association with Summit Furniture. After being suitably impressed by his extensive design work for Donghia Furniture/Textile of New York Jane Sieberts, President of Summit sought out Glyn and bestowed him with the honor of designing Summits 25 year anniversary collections. “It was an incredible honour for me to be entrusted to create 2 collections for Summit let alone on such an occassion as its 25th anniversary.”

“More and more high end luxury custom projects such as super yachts and exclusive resorts are seeking something unique which other such projects do not have.We recently met with Alberto Pinto to discuss just that and concluded that the solution is to offer their respective clients small custom collections project by project. We are the ideal studio tfor this.”

Years of design, development and research by Glyn resulted in 2 collections that not only celebrated Summits amazing position of the market leader in outdoor furniture for a quarter of a century but Glyn´s design direction signified a new generation of classical contemporary design for Summit. Loggia and Sportiva collections exceeded all expectations and generated a level of sophistication and luxurious comfort not generally seen in the outdoor furniture. Summits official press release issued when the collections launched quoted his Loggia Collection “as the work of a gifted designer in tune with today´s

tasted and lifestyles.” Sportiva “is an embodiment of the designers ideas about simplicity, function and lifestyle. Sportiva demonstrates the designers extraordinary ability to honor function and form.” Both Loggia and Sportiva are fast establishing themselves best sellers and future classics within Summits famed catalogue of outdoor designs. “Glyn is incredibly happy with the success of the two Summit lines and discussions are underway to extend the two collections as well as possibly creating a whole new 3rd collection to be introduce in 2007 says the studio”.

“ Gordon has been a tremendous help in promoting our abilities to Summit´s Monterey base as well as the to the worlds leading yacht designers. His support is priceless given his reputation and the respect he holds within the luxury marine sector. It was Gordon who brought us into contact with Rainsford Saunders, Andrew Winch, John Munford, Donald Starkey and Dickie Bannendburg and we can’t thank him enough. Glyn Peter Machin

This exciting collaboration brought Glyn into contact with Gordon Scott a great advocator and admirer of Glyns design work for all environments. “Gordon has been a tremendous help in promoting our abilities to Summit´s Monterey base as well as the to the worlds leading yacht designers. It was Gordon who brought us into contact with Rainsford Saunders, Andrew Winch, John Munford Donald Starkey and Dickie Bannendburg and we can’t thank him enough.” Contact with such leading companies led to Glyn making contact with super yacht designers Tim Heywood and Terence Disdale both of whom are planning to feature the designs of Glyn Peter Machin in their respective projects. Through Gordon´s professional advise Glyn´s studio exhibited with great success at the 2005 23

Monaco Yacht Show. They will exhibit again in 2006 with a larger stand. “With each show we plan to increase our presence and stand size. A huge advantage for our studio is that because we have licensee collaborations we are able to gain more exposure at such shows other than our own stand. At Monaco 2005 we had Glyn Peter Machin “brand” products on our own stand as well as designs created for licensees on 2 other stands in different locations of the show. The 2005 show led to our being commissioned by major US yacht builder Burger Boat Company to supply the exterior decks of their newest project with our custom versions of Oceansand designs. We were also visited Marilyn Mower editor of Showboats International, this led to an editorial feature of our design work in the February 2006 issue. Monaco Yacht Show 2006 will see the launch of new designs under the ever evolving luxury brand” Whilst discussing exhibitions Glyn revealed plans to be present at 3 major marine shows each year in order to increase awareness of the brand and further develop relations with the worlds leading yacht designers, and yacht builders. In fact whilst relaxing in the studios new and incredibly comfortable Deluxe teak sofas Glyn talked about the studios debut at the March 2006 Dubai International Boat show where he had just returned from. “It was very interesting and very worthwhile. We made up some good contacts with local yacht designers and are in negotiation with a company whom have expressed interest in representing our brand products throughout U.A.E and the Middle East that alone was worth exhibiting. There is so much growth in this region and we want to be part of that exciting expansion.” As with Monaco last September the studio were able to maximize their product exposure in Dubai. Edmiston & Company commissioned Glyn to design a whole new stand which was furnished with “brand” furniture and glassware. Summit also used Glyns designs on their collaborative stand with Cavendish White and highly talented yacht designers Rainsford Saunders. Licensing and brand development take up most of the daily life in Glyn´s studio with designs in development for San Fransisco McGuire Furniture which are slotted for introduction this September, steel and saddle leather chairs for high end contract manufac24

turer HBF which will debut at Neocon in USA and numerous outdoor collections for DelGreco and Company, New York. Also underway are new additions to collections for previous clients, two new outdoor collections which will be pitched to manufacturers in April 2006. The “brand” which is the studios own line of furnishings is quite a collection and unlike other high end brands. All items are available in duel versions meaning they can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments depending on materials and finish specified. This option exemplifies the studios registered trademark working title DESIGN BETWEEN AND BEYOND WALLS ®.

steel under frame. The highlight of the piece is the sling which is made from luxury high tech textiles. Gordon Scott of Summit calls it the “ultimate chaise for todays super yacht, its clean, light and has superb lines.” Other collections worthy of a detailed browse through the studios website (www.glynpetermachin.com) are Veranda,V Series in solid bar polished stainless steel,Vendome, Archipelago and numerous other pieces. To compliment the interior and exterior furnishings the studio launched a beautiful line of mouth blown glassware. The collection of vases and vessels in various shapes and sizes decorate the studio and was presented to us with this amazing explanation by Glyn.

“ Blow represents the intergration of two unique elements. Landscape scenery choreographed by nature and a centuries old tradition known only to a precious few are merged bringing a new vision to the forefront of classical contemporary glass design. Glyn Peter Machin

BLOW The stunning Oceansand Collection features deep curved back seating, woven strap seat supports and luscious comfort. The epic Supper Table´s solid wood plank top is supported by an ingenious patent pending steel bridge system which replaces the use many cumbersome rails and keeps the appearance light for such a large piece. Conversation is quite the opposite with clean linear lines, however it isn’t without interesting detail. The whole chair tapers in shape from front to back and ends with rounded back legs. Deluxe is dominated by a solid teak modular sofa collection which is cleverly complemented with a family daybed grande, benches, club chairs, club diners and low table/ottomans.The spacious indoor Siesta daybed newly launched at the Dubai International Boat Show in an amazing combination of high gloss Macassar Ebony, Peking Red laquer and black leather is a contemporary classic. One piece we found very exciting was final developments of the new Siesta Chaise for outdoor. This product exemplifies the meaning of form + function. The modern clean lines of the teak top frame merge into a simple 25

“Blow” represents the intergration of two unique elements. Landscape scenery choreographed by nature and a centuries old tradition known only to a precious few are merged bringing a new vision to the forefront of classical contemporary glass design. Northern Scandinavian winters evoking stunningly beautiful scenes of ice blue waters, evening amber light, red leafed forest canopies and dramatic snow speckled mornings provide endless inspiration for form, colour and texture. To forge these glorious scenes of inspiration into objects of uncompromising beauty we were drawn to a small island anchored in a lagoon off the Adriatic coast. It is here, on the Venetian island of Murano where glass blowing has been a tradition since year 982 that Scandinavian and Venetian traditions transcend to create our timeless glass collections.” This is truly an explanation by a designer that has a deep passion for his work and for serving

his respective clients to the highest standard. Creating classical contemporary pieces that are visually beautiful is important to our style but equally important is paying close attention to detail, quality and above all lasting comfort.
