Continues to Bring Serbisyong Totoo Amidst Pandemic The Network consequently won in all dayparts which include the morning, afternoon, and evening blocks. GMA continued to dominate in key urban areas including Urban Luzon and Urban Visayas. The Network recorded 35.4 percent total day people audience share in Urban Luzon while its competitor posted 26.5 percent. In the recently-clinched Urban Visayas, GMA also posted a bigger lead with 35.9 percent versus rival network’s 32.5 percent.

G

MA Network kept its winning streak in the nationwide television ratings for March despite the recent programming changes in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Network remained resolute in delivering reliable news and information to the public across all its platforms, it has temporarily stopped the taping of its entertainment and some public affairs programs in compliance with the government’s implementation of the enhanced community quarantine. This resulted to the airing of a new programming line-up which include re-runs of well-loved Kapuso programs.

With official data from March 1 to 21, the Network likewise won in Mega Manila with 37.7 percent total day people audience share, outscoring ABS-CBN’s 25.1 percent. In the list of overall top-rating programs, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) still reigns as the number one show nationwide as well as in the respective lists of Urban Luzon, Urban Visayas, and Mega Manila.

GMA Music proudly released a refreshing and soulful compilation album featuring this generation’s promising singers. The two-volume compilation album called The Clash Singles is a collection of songs performed by the graduates of the first season of GMA Network’s all-original Filipino reality singing competition.

Notably, GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras was also the most watched news program nationwide and in all the said areas, which further proved that the Kapuso Network is the Filipinos’ top news source especially during these times.

Citing the latest data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement in March (with March 22 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA registered 33.8 percent average total day people audience share in the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) while ABS-CBN got 29.4 percent.

Making it high in this month’s list of top-rating Kapuso shows is the replay of Encantadia followed by Descendants of the Sun (The Philippine Adaptation), Centerstage, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, Wowowin Primetime, Pepito Manaloto, Magpakailanman, Daddy’s Gurl, Kambal Karibal, Anak ni Waray vs Anak ni Biday, Amazing Earth, Prima Donnas, Eat Bulaga, and Love of my Life.

I am Patient

2828 BY HOWIE G. SEVERINO

April 7, 2020

After 11 days in the hospital, a bout of pneumonia and a major scare, I think I can now be called a COVID-19 survivor. I know of a few others, all attempting to return to low-profile lives in a fearful world, but most choose to remain invisible. There are strong reasons for this anonymity. This disease is one of the most stigmatized and loneliest in human history, perhaps comparable only to leprosy where quarantine can be forever. One of my fellow COVID-19 patients in the hospital can’t go home because his condo building won’t let him move back, despite already testing negative for the virus. I am one of the lucky ones who have been able to go home, resume a semblance of my former life, and live to tell the tale. It’s a tale of long painful needles that couldn’t find a vein in my hands, the swabs down my throat that made me gag, the torture of long sleep deprivation, and the team of doctors who formed a Viber group to discuss updates on my case and the experimental drug chloroquine that worked on patients elsewhere and eventually worked on me. Since the pandemic is far from over, many more will be infected and confined. Some will not make it. Those of us among the pioneers — I’m Patient 2828 in the lower part of the curve - have a responsibility to talk about this experience in a way that will enable the public to understand it, lessen the fear, and create compassion for those who survived COVID-19.

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | APRIL 2020 ISSUE

COVER 9

Howie Severino on surviving COVID-19 A few takeaways: 1

Transparency is an obligation. While there are good reasons to keep this condition under wraps — there are even privacy laws that can justify it — it’s not fair to anyone who has had close contact with you. For the greater good, we are required to disclose our COVID-19 status to the Department of Health. Contact tracing can go a long way in preventing its further spread. This is more than a notification of work colleagues. One of my more critical decisions was informing my close neighbors. They reacted with compassion and appreciation for the information, but I’m not sure how they would have reacted if they found out later or through the barangay.

2

This disease need not be so lonely. You’re in isolation in a hospital or at home, with no visitors except frontliners in PPE spacesuits. You can’t see their faces and tell them apart aside from their body shapes. That doesn’t mean you need to feel alone.

One of my most memorable moments of relief was when my friend Alonso told me the hilarious story from years ago of being in a kalesa on Roxas Blvd and being chased by a police car for the driver’s traffic violation (“the world’s slowest police chase”). He recalls spotting me on my bike so that I stopped and lobbied the cops to let my passenger friend go.

4

Like many under lockdown, our phones are our lifeline and our source of social support. I had Zoom meetings from my hospital bed, saw family social events and group conversations. The most someone can do for a COVID-19 patient is to stay in touch online. Even with this connection, the regular visits of nurses to perform tests and take your vital signs were indispensable in maintaining a mental balance. I got to know many of them, the risks they take, their long walks home, their own isolation at home, the fear of others when they walk by.

3

When reaching out to COVID-19 patients, do so with more than get well messages. Share family news, your playlists, jokes and memes, anything

My wife calmly walked me through meditation and breathing exercises she learned at theater workshops. In the dark, I closed my eyes, imagined lavender fields, and started counting to 100. I was trying to dispel the dreadful thoughts and finally fell asleep before the count of 100.

that can offer a respite from the constant reminders of our condition. We do not need more pity.

COVID-19 need not be a death sentence. I am living proof. A combination of good fortune, physical fitness and competent medical treatment probably saved my life. Don’t believe all the statistics. One false impression is that the fatalities outnumber the recoveries, artificially bloating the case fatality rate. The reality is many of the recoveries don’t get counted, while the deaths often make the news, adding to the overwhelming sense of dread. The odds of survival are pretty good.

5

Don’t underestimate the power of the mind. The debilitating effects of the disease and the medication combined with the uncertainty produced one of the worst nights of my life. Unable to sleep, I was delirious with visions of death crossing my mind.

6

Frontliners are true heroes, but many more have chosen to stay out of harm’s way. One can’t blame them considering the risks and discrimination. When my wife contacted a private nursing agency in search of additional nursing support, out of 200 nurses on their roster, only one stepped up. He happened to be a strapping young man in PPE who was interested in documentary. I taught him how to shoot and he began to document his life as a frontliner, which eventually became a documentation of his patient. This apprenticeship was a great diversion, kept my mind active while giving me a blessed sense that even lying there in isolation I was getting something done. It will be hard to pay them back, but one can pay it forward. If it’s true that I will have antibodies in my blood that can help others fight off infection, I’ll be glad to donate this accidental gift. It’s a small price for all survivors to pay for the chance to see the sun again.

MA Artist Center (GMAAC) talents joined forces to extend support to Filipino families whose livelihoods were greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through ‘Project RICE Up.’

“It’s time to give back dahil sila naman ang numero unong sumuporta sa mga shows namin. And now is the perfect time to show our support for them ngayon na sila naman ang nangangailangan,” echoed Klea.

Project RICE Up, a fund-raising drive by various GMAAC stars together with GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), aims to help our kababayans who lost their sources of income due to the implementation of enhanced community quarantine in Luzon and lockdowns in other parts of the country.

Betong highlighted the importance of bayanihan during these times, “Ibang krisis po ang kinakaharap natin at ibang krisis po ang gutom. Kaya ako po ay nanawagan sa lahat ng alliance nating mga Kapuso. Magsama-sama po tayong suportahan ang The Rice Up Project.”

As of April 8, GMAAC has already raised funds for 225 sacks of rice that will be distributed to families in need by GMAKF.

Some of the artists who took part in the initiative are Queen of Creative Collaborations Heart Evangelista, actress Klea Pineda, comedians Betong Sumaya, and Chariz Solomon. “During this situation we are in, we are also facing another rising issue and that is hunger. This is why I’m reaching out to all of you, mga Kapuso, to support the RICE Up Project. Marami tayong matutulungan and all our help will really go a long way,” said Heart. Mel Tiangco is an awardwinning broadcaster, with a career spanning over 30 years. She is also the founder of GMA Kapuso Foundation, the sociocivic arm of GMA Network. Now, she can add an unlikely feather to her cap—a meme queen.

The younger generation does know her—she is one of the anchors of primetime news program 24 Oras after all. However, they really took notice of her after she was featured in simulation graphics of real catastrophes like floods or volcanic eruptions. Viewers took to the internet to share their reactions to the simulations from 24 Oras featuring the veteran newscaster. These reactions stemmed from a combination of admiration for the program’s impressive graphics as well as affection for a familiar figure. Thus a meme was born.

Mel proved to be a good sport and took her viral fame in stride. “Ito ‘yung worried na worried sila sa akin? Ang feeling ko noon, they love me. They care for me. They’re so concerned about me,” she says in an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com. “Although, of course it’s just a meme ‘no? Pero ‘yun ang pumasok sa utak ko. I really love that. I really love those memes. Talagang na-lift ako. Imagine, takot na takot sila na baka [mapahamak] ako,” she continues.

When Mel first heard that she went viral because of the simulations, she had a good laugh. She even shared the posts with other people who seemed to appreciate the humor behind them. “I was in a bus, I was abroad noong time na pumutok ito. Somebody sent it to me from our staff. Tawa ‘ko nang tawa. The cellphone (which showed the posts) was passed around and they were so happy inside the bus. It became a topic the whole day, ‘yang mga memes na ‘yan. I would like to thank these people, these millennials who made me so happy because of these memes,” she shared. GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |APRIL 2020 ISSUE

THE TITA TAG Mel Tiangco has long been called “Tita Mel” by those who work closely with her. But now, more people are calling her “tita.” Perhaps it is because she is a constant presence for many people through her daily reports in 24 Oras or maybe because she is like a trusted confidant in the long-running real life drama anthology Magpakailanman. She that says she doesn’t mind the “tita” tag. “Oh, I like that! ‘Tita.’ There is a ring of respect. Tinitingala ka nila, parang you are full of wisdom,” she muses. She doesn’t mind being called “tita” as she claims that she is in good company. “Sino ba ang pinaka sikat na tinawag na ‘tita’ ng buong bansa? Si Tita Cory (Aquino)! Tignan mo si Tita Cory, biruin mo. Si Tita Cory tinawag na ‘tita.’ Ako tatawagin ding ‘tita,’ malaking bagay sa akin ‘yun ‘di ba?” she explains. One thing that people might find surprising about her is her playful side. As one of the most respected newscasters in the country, most are used to seeing her being very formal and serious. “Sa totoong buhay, yes, I can be very serious. I can be very formal depending on the situation, depending on what I am doing

“Oh, I like that! ‘Tita.’ There is a ring of respect. Tinitingala ka nila, parang you are full of wisdom” at that moment. When it is work, I am serious, I am formal,” she says. Another side of her emerges when she is off the clock. “I’ve worked with Vicky [Morales] only recently sa 24 Oras. Hindi naman kami nagkakatrabaho so she didn’t know me then. Pero after a couple of years, sabi niya. ‘Tita Mel, who would have thought that you are such a funny person?’ That’s how people view me—serious. Pero I have my crazy time. I think over and above my being formal, I’m really crazy. Loka-loka din ako,” she says with a laugh.

PAYONG KAPUSO 13 niya, mamayang konti iba na naman. I’m wondering, ano kaya ang laman ng utak ng taong ito?” she shares. Tita Mel says even with the rebrand, #MPK will surely stick to what it does best— bringing real stories of real people to the fore. “We have always taken pride in saying na totoong kwento kami. Hindi magbabago ‘yun. It will always be totoong kuwento. Hindi kami magfa-fabricate tapos sasabihin namin totoong kuwento,” she says with conviction. She guarantees that these stories are real and will remain real.

TELLING STORIES This youthful playfulness ties in with the new goal of Magpakailanman, which has been rebranded as #MPK. It now aims to present stories to which younger audiences can relate. “Gusto namin ng kwento na relevant to the young people. Gusto namin ‘yung young people maabot din ng mga values ng show because they are the ones who are now taking over. We want stories na may magagandang aral para sa mga kabataan, ‘yung mga millennials, para kapulutan nila ng aral na gagabay sa kanila hanggang sa pagtanda nila. We will look for more stories like that. We have already done a lot in the past but we’d like more stories like that,” she says. The show has been aiming for more variety in how the stories are treated and presented.

Asked time and again if she would be willing to share her life story in the show, Mel remains adamant that she doesn’t want to be the focus of any episode. She prefers to remain the storyteller. “Ayaw ko kasi very clear ang role ko sa Magpakailanman. Ako ‘yung storyteller. That’s what I do best. I am a storyteller. I want to remain in that position because I enjoy that position. I think I have already gathered enough supporters in that role. Tama na ‘ko doon,” she says. Instead of her own life story, Tita Mel is more interested in featuring other controversial figures. If given a chance, she would like to have an episode featuring the life of President Rodrigo Duterte. She thinks getting to know how he grew up can make people understand his mercurial nature.

“We want to vary the stories more. Para sa ganoon mas maraming manood, mas maraming ma-appreciate ‘yung aming ginagawa for them,” she explains.

“I’ve said this before, gusto ko [ma-feature] si Duterte. Gusto kong makita how his mind works. Kung ifi-feature ko siya, gusto ko ‘yung totoo. Lahat totoo. ‘Yung totoong buhay ni Duterte, ‘yun ang gusto kong makuha because he is an interesting mind to read.

Tita Mel has been the host and storyteller for Magpakailanman since its inception in 2002, up until it ended in 2008. She was again tapped to be the host when it relaunched in 2012 and remains so until the present.

Ang personality niya nag-iiba. Hindi mo alam kung ano ba siya, saan ba siya, mabait ba siya? Biglang magmumura, mamayang konti awang-awa na siya sa mga kababayan niya. Pupuntahan niya pa, bibisitahin

“Why can I say it straight to your face na totoong kuwento lang? Nakakausap ko, nakikita ko ‘yung tao. I interact with the person so alam ko. Ini-interview ko, nalalaman ko ‘yung buhay niya. Ako ‘yung nag-gagarantiya sa televiewers natin na totoo talaga ‘yung nakikita ko, nakakausap ko,” she explains. Being the host of #MPK is a constant learning experience for Tita Mel. “In Magpakailanman, I learn about the lives of people and that sort of fortifies a few of your values, your principles, your beliefs. Sa pakikining sa mga kuwento nila, nakakahugot ka ng mga dapat at hindi dapat. Natututo ako sa kanilang lahat eh. Sa mga istorya nila, natututo rin ako,” she says. Getting a glimpse of other people’s lives fuels her desire to learn more. “I never stopped yearning, longing and trying to learn. New things, old things, going back and relearning or refining or gathering more—I will never stop. There is no single thing that I can tell you now na gusto kong matutunan kasi gusto kong matutunan lahat. I want to learn. I don’t think I will ever ever stop wanting to learn,” she concludes.

KAPUSO ADVOCATES RALLY BEHIND MOTHER EARTH JANINE GUTIERREZ

agged as the Fashion Muse in the country, Janine Gutierrez is known for her timeless beauty and classic style. But aside from being known as a showbiz royalty and a sought-after influencer, Janine is also one of the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines National Youth Ambassadors.

escendants of the Sun PH star Rocco Nacino believes that the world is in need of a reset. He recalled that it was through a tree planting activity with the Philippine Navy that made him appreciate the planet we live in.

The award-winning actress is a passionate advocate of proper waste management and garbage disposal.

“It made me realize how much climate change has affected the Earth because of what men do. We are consuming too much of the Earth, and it’s now fighting back,” he shared.

She shares, “My love for the planet started early on, when I was around ten-years old. It really stemmed from my love of nature. It would sadden me when I would see trash and we would always make it a point to pick up whatever was floating around. Luckily, I have been able to work with WWF for the past few years and their main principle is that protecting nature also protects the many Filipinos who rely on the environment for their livelihood such as farmers and fishermen.” Environmental pollution is one of the key problems we face in our modern world. Though there have been massive technological advancements in this day and age, these came with negative effects to our planet. Small habits have a huge impact and lasting changes. As individuals, we can all enrich our knowledge and hearts in caring for Mother Earth. Janine says, “As much as possible, I say no to single-use plastics. I always have a tumbler with me so I don’t need to get bottled water. I bring an eco-bag to the grocery and I support local markets and products.” Through simple lifestyle changes, all of us can do something to preserve energy and protect the environment. Janine shares one of the sustainable ways she lives by, “One cool thing you can do at home is separate your plastic trash, cut it up and use it to make eco-bricks which can be used for construction instead of just going to landfills.”

As a nursing graduate himself, he’s aware that certain habits of Filipinos do not just lead to diseases but also directly harms the surroundings. Moreover, Rocco highly encourages people to be wary of their actions and apply lifestyle changes even as simple as reducing plastic use and utilizing social media for environment causes. “Invest in disciplining yourselves. Because what you do in and outside of your home, will be examples for other people. Be a good one, and it will be more fulfilling as you pass it on. People always come up with ideas but they stop or lose interest once it’s in the implementation phase. Make it happen, and others will be inspired to do the same. You never know, you maybe the hero that this earth needs to step up.” Rocco is currently an advocate for GMA Kapuso Foundation for their health and nutrition projects such as the Bisig Bayan and Give-A-Gift.

ctress Bea Binene, on the other hand, has been with the Network’s foundation since she started in show business, joining in on various causes, donation drives, as well as disaster and relief management. In 2017, she self-produced the independent film ‘Fading Paradise,’ which tackled the situations caused by climate change and took viewers to the beautiful seas of the Philippines. Bea vows to promote awareness through her influence as a celebrity. She uses her status for environmental awareness and rally behind Mother Nature. “When I did tree planting activities with Haribon Foundation back in the day, I realized how important it is and how Mother Nature is getting affected including our own beaches, our tourist destinations. Even the resorts we go to later on closed because of its effects.” The 22-year-old actress wanted to reach out to the youth through her advocacies to share her passion for the environment. She said, “I want to influence people, I want to share to everyone especially sa mga millennials, na-realize ko lang siya dahil nanonood ako sa news, nagkaroon ng Yolanda, Ondoy, palala na ng palala, tapos ngayon mga earthquakes na sabi ko sa sarili ko na sinisingil na tayo, masyado nang naaabuso si Mother Nature sa atin. I need to find a way.”

Now, we are faced by a lethal threat in the form of the novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19 which has affected global industries and claimed over a million of lives worldwide. As a battle cry against the pandemic, GMA Artist Center stars Janine Gutierrez, Rocco Nacino, Bea Binene, and Ashley Ortega have set an example to the public by applying lifestyle changes and conducting projects that preserve and protect our planet.

ASHLEY ORTEGA

K

apuso actress Ashley Ortega has always believed in preserving the earth as a daily calling, something to advocate for and engage in. The irreversible damage we do to the environment leads to the degrading the condition of Mother Earth. Hence, this affects the quality of our life. “As someone working in show business and being a public figure myself, I believe that is my responsibility to promote causes that are beneficial to the human race,” says Ashley. She shares, “It was around last year when I attended an event held by Greenpeace Philippines. It was about sustainable living. The project essentially encouraged Filipinos to share a common goal of experiencing a healthy and happy lifestyle within the fair and proper utilization of the earth’s resources.” Ashley also believes that there is a lot to be done to mitigate environmental consequences. With the cooperation from the government, private companies, and the public, we can all make the world a better place to live in, for us and for the future generations. “More opportunities must be created for the youth to discover and hone their skills, and convert them into useful and ethical means. Living in a third world country, unemployment and poverty prevail over many sectors and these can be minimized by creating more employment opportunities and investing more on enterprise skills in agriculture, information technology, waste management,” explains Ashley. She urges the public to live a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle, “Living a life through sustainable means is one way to do so and to encourage others to follow this lifestyle is even better. It’s a matter of acknowledging the roles we play daily and the consequences of our actions. The Kapuso advocates are one with Mother Earth and they’re calling us to help save our planet.
