UPDATES

GMA Network Caps Off 2015 With 111 Percent Increase in Net Income G

MA Network, Inc. (GMA) ended 2015 with remarkable results as it generated a net income of P2.126 billion, equivalent to a 111 percent improvement from the P1.010 billion recorded in 2014.

In particular, top-rating GMA Channel 7 accounted for a great majority of the increase in airtime revenues, registering a 16 percent improvement over 2014.

Consolidated revenues stood at P13.727 billion, up 15 percent from the previous year’s P11.983 billion.

The company’s Radio business, on the other hand, posted a year-onyear increase of 15 percent, while GMA News TV climbed 24 percent, representing the highest sales in the history of the country’s leading news channel.

The increase was attributed to the sustained growth in airtime revenues particularly in regular advertisements across the year, totaling P12.381 billion or 16 percent higher from a year ago. Without the impact of political advocacies, airtime revenues was still ahead by 12 percent. “Our financial performance in 2015 was a result of multiple factors but mostly from our reclaimed lead in nationwide ratings and continued dominance in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila,” says GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon. For full year 2015, GMA prevailed over rival networks in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) with 35.4 percent household shares versus ABSCBN’s 34.9 percent and TV5’s 9.2 percent based on official data from the industry’s trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Meanwhile, the company’s total operating expenses (OPEX) grew by a mere 2 percent to P10.745 billion mainly on higher production cost, in line with GMA’s constant effort to strengthen content quality on different platforms. With the increase in earnings combined with minimal growth in the total OPEX, EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for 2015 settled at P4.641 billion, 59 percent higher than 2014. “We are determined to replicate, if not surpass, what we were able to achieve last year this 2016, as we remain committed to strengthening our core business and other new and emerging ventures,” Gozon adds.

6

Other revenue streams including production and subsidiaries operations recorded a 3 percent improvement in between periods, with wholly owned subsidiaries GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI), which manages and operates the Network’s Internet play, and GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), which syndicates Kapuso programs to the international market, partly accounting for the increase. Backed by the continued success of GMA’s online platforms as well as recent tie-ups with major over-thetop (OTT) operators iFlix and HOOQ, NMI ended 2015 with a 50 percent increase in total advertising revenues over 2014. GWI, on the other hand, exceeded 2014’s sales by 34 percent as it sold 4,003 program hours in various countries across the Asia Pacific region and beyond. The Network also continued to engage its audience online with leading local news website GMA News Online (www.gmanews. tv) breaching the one million pageviews mark, while continuing to grow its number of unique browsers, according to data from Effective Measure. Similarly, GMA’s entertainment website (www. gmanetwork.com/entertainment) registered 652 million pageviews, beating long-time rival ABS-CBN. com’s 606.6 million by a whopping 45.4 million.

GMA Network Declares P1.944 B Cash Dividends

G

MA Network’s Board of Directors approved the declaration of a cash dividend of P0.40 centavos per share, totaling P1.944 billion in a meeting held at the GMA Network Center in Quezon City on April 8. The dividend will be paid on May 16, 2016 to shareholders of record as of April 25, 2016. “We expect GMA’s financial performance to exceed expectations this year,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon. “Our announcement reaffirms the Network’s commitment to its valued shareholders to provide them with the best returns.” Since its IPO launch in 2007, the Network has consistently delivered a high shareholder return, paying out cash dividends equivalent to almost 100 percent of its net income. Total dividend per share and total dividends declared from 2008 onwards amount to P3.58 and P17.4 billion, respectively.

UPDATES

Encantadia Debuts New Look, Teasers at NexCon 2016 By PATRICIA CALZO VEGA, GMA News Online

Game-changing worldbuilding

I

t may have taken ten years for Encantadia fans to meet its creators, but the wait was well worth it. Director Mark Reyes and lead concept artist Noel Flores took the stage at NexCon 2016, their first official meetup with fans outside the thriving online community, to talk about its new incarnation set for broadcast within the 3rd quarter of the year. But, first a clarification: it’s not a reboot, it’s a “requel”. The Encantadia ‘requel’ “It’s based on the mythology of Encantadia, but we’re going to fix things that we thought needed fixing in the original run,” says Reyes. “There are a lot of things that will be familiar and that will feel nostalgic, but there will be new twists and characters that will surprise viewers.” Plans to bring back the groundbreaking fantasy franchise began as early as 2010 but it wasn’t until late 2015 that network management gave the go-signal. “Our marching orders were to outdo the 2006 series,” shares Reyes, who adds that the creative team took advantage of the latest available technology to improve the show’s aesthetic, from a fully animatronic Imaw to 3-D printed costume components. The production also uses HD cameras despite broadcast constraints and is looking to explore alternative platforms where the series can be viewed in high definition.

If Reyes’s decision to shoot with HD cameras for a standard definition broadcast seems frivolous, the concept art presented by Flores more than justifies its use. The scale and breadth of Encantadia’s fantasy world was unprecedented for a daily television series aired in 2005. In the years that followed, he would continue to sketch ideas and studies, some of which have made its way into the “requel’s” expanded world. “One of my major considerations [for the requel] was designing for the millennial generation, the gaming generation,” he says. Flores explains that—thanks to video games and MMORPGs, not to mention the popularity of Game of Thrones and other fantasy adaptations—this particular demographic has come to expect extensive worldbuilding and backstory. “Every adventure begins with a map,” Flores proclaims, as he presents various renderings of Encantadia’s map, marking the world’s geopolitical boundaries— which includes a subtle acknowledgment to the series’ predecessor, Mulawin. He adds, to the delight of fans, “This is only one-fourth of the world of Encantadia.” Each of the original four kingdoms—now officially three kingdoms and a controlled territory—have distinct heraldry inspired by the elements they represent, which is also tied to their power jewels. The elemental theme is also carried out in their respective palace interiors and exteriors: Lireo (air) has towering, glasslike structures while Hathoria (fire) has jagged edges and glowing embers that bring to mind active volcanoes. Glimpses of various character designs were presented but not elaborated on to avoid

spoilers; with the exception of Marian Rivera’s Ynang Reyna, casting of the new Sang’gres and other major players remain under wraps. “Keep an open mind,” Reyes cautions. “There are reasons why we chose the cast, which will become clear once the story progresses.” But perhaps the most exciting addition for hardcore fantasy fans is the creation of a working syllabic alphabet for the world’s primary languages. Enchan’s flourishes are obviously inspired by our own baybayin, while Hathoria’s script is reminiscent of Tolkien’s dwarven runes. Devas ideographs, previously seen only as the jewel’s symbols, have been expanded include the jewel’s representative values. Engaging the fans Unlike other shows of its genre, Encantadia’s fandom was sustained beyond its airing. Case in point: there were four cosplayers dressed up as the original Sang’gre’s at NexCon. Fanart is shared online. A Facebook fan page, Encantadia Saga, has over 12,000 likes and active discussion threads. All this to say that the announcements made by Reyes and Flores were met with much enthusiasm. At the open forum that followed, fans suggested cross-platform spinoffs like art books, games and apps; some of them even inquired about contributing concept art and building costumes. These were also met with enthusiasm by Reyes, who promised to set up mechanisms to give fans the chance to work in the series, as artists, designers, or even as costumed extras in a Mos Eisley cantina-inspired scene.

The Four New Sang’gres of Encantadia by JST, GMA News For the first time, the four women who will play the coveted roles of the Sang’gres of the new Encantadia series took the spotlight. Introduced during “24 Oras” were Kylie Padilla, who will play the role of Amihan; Gabbi Garcia, who will take on the mantle of Alena; Sanya Lopez, who takes over the part of Danaya; and Glaiza De Castro, who will bring her intense charms to Pirena.
