COVER STORY
GMA’s special coverage on typhoon Yolanda earned the Network (and the country) its fourth George Foster Peabody Award. GMA News and Public Affairs won the Peabody for its overall Typhoon Yolanda coverage which was composed of entries from the newscasts 24 Oras, 24 Oras Weekend, Saksi, State of the Nation and the public affairs magazine show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. GMA shares the precious win with Yolanda survivors who continue to struggle to rebuild their communities. GMA news teams were reporting from all over the Visayas region on the 8th of November 2013, when the super typhoon, and the powerful storm surge that followed, took the lives of thousands in just a few minutes. In the aftermath, families were in search of the missing and surrounded by the dead. There was no food or water and no communication with the outside world. News teams were documenting the victims of the disaster even as they faced the same conditions. “Facing logistical challenges and sharing in the national shock in the face of what may have been the most
powerful typhoon in history, GMA news teams provided desperately needed spot news coverage and information, gaining strength and perspective as they worked, and followed up with solid reporting on the aftermath, heroic acts and relief efforts,” cited the Peabody Awards Board. The George Foster Peabody Awards, the broadcast and electronic media equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, aims to recognize stories that matter. Winning requires a unanimous vote from the 16-member board. Besides GMA News, this year’s list of winners include the series Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, three HBO documentaries, twelve programs by the broadcaster PBS and a personal award for journalist Tom Brokaw. GMA Network was first recognized by the Peabody Awards in 1999 for the I-Witness documentaries “Kidneys for Sale” and “Kamao” by Jessica Soho and Jay Taruc’s child labor story on “Brigada Siete.” Kara David’s I-Witness episode “Ambulansya de Paa” was awarded in 2010 followed by Reel Time’s “Salat” in 2013. GMA is the only news and public affairs organization in the country to have received this prestigious award for excellence in broadcast journalism. The 73rd Annual Peabody Awards ceremony will be held on May 19 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
Who Is George Foster Peabody And How Is He Related To Pulitzer? Getting To Know The George Foster Peabody Award George Foster Peabody (1852-1958) was a successful businessman and philanthropist who donated the funds to start the Peabody Awards. After making his fortune in investment banking, he retired in 1906 and concentrated on public service. Often likened to the Pulitzer Prize, the Peabody Awards was conceptualized by the National Association of Broadcasters precisely as the Pulitzer’s counterpart - for radio. First awarded in 1940, the Award has since expanded its scope to laud exemplary storytelling in a wide array of media. Television programs were first awarded in 1948.
The first TV Networks recognized with this Pulitzer version for media were NBC (for Howdy Doody) and ABC (for Actor’s Studio). See It Now of CBS holds the distinction of being the first primetime news program to win the Peabody (in 1951). HBO/MS received the first ever Peabody Award for an original cable TV program (She’s Nobody’s Baby: The History of American Women in the 20th Century) in 1981. The Simpsons also made Peabody history as the first animated TV show awardee (1996). GMA Network won its first Peabody in 1999, the same year HBO’s The Sopranos did, too. And no, Pulitzer and Peabody were not related.

GMA Network once again brought honor to the country by clinching seven world medals at the recently concluded 2014 New York Festivals International TV & Film Awards. Among the Filipino awardees, the Kapuso Network went home with the most number of awards—eleven in total, including four Finalist Certificates—and sent the biggest contingent to the recognition ceremonies held last April 8 at the 2014 NAB Show in Las Vegas. Weekday news magazine program Tunay na Buhay led GMA Network’s esteemed list of winners with its Gold World Medal in the Community Portraits category. The winning entry “Mga Sanggol at Langaw” episode featured the sub-human conditions in the slums of Tondo, Manila where majority of the residents barely make a living out of scavenging among mountains of trash. Meanwhile, its high regard for culture and history made the children’s show Tropang Potchi a big winner in the Children/ Youth Program category, bringing home a Silver World Medal for the episode “Talaandig Tribe,” which brought forth to public consciousness the customs and traditions of the Talaandig Tribe of Bukidnon. GMA News TV’s Reel Time triumphed with its documentary “Silang Wala sa Mapa,” a story on how the B’laan indigenous people of Mindanao survived generations without modern medicine, giving the program a Silver World Medal in the Community Service Program category. Also a Peabody
News magazine program Brigada took home the Silver World Medal in the Community Portraits category for its “Gintong Krudo at Sipa ng Pag-asa” stories. Reporter Micaela Papa showed the story of impoverished children who swim through the filthy waters of the Navotas Fish Port to collect and sell spilled petroleum oil in “Gintong Krudo” while Steve Dailisan’s “Sipa ng Pag-asa” told of an inspiring report on the lives of young garbage collectors in Payatas who dream of rising from poverty through football. News TV Quick Response Team won the Bronze World Medal in the Best Coverage of Breaking News category for its live on-theground reportage of the Zamboanga siege, led by anchor Jiggy Manicad. Front Row, likewise, was presented the Bronze World Medal in the Community Portraits category for the episode “Lusong Dunong,” a story on the pupils and teachers of San Esteban Elementary School in Pampanga who hold classes in flooded rooms. GMA News’ advocacy campaign for a well-informed 2013 elections dubbed “Dapat Tama” was given the Bronze World Medal in the Music Video Category. GMA News pillar Jessica Soho, widely regarded as the country’s most awarded broadcast news journalist, received the Finalist Certificate for the Best News Reporter/Correspondent category for her “Photographs of Typhoon Pablo” special report aired in Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, which captured the pain and suffering in the wake of Typhoon Pablo. Also awarded the Finalist Certificate were I-Witness’ “Ganito Tayo Noong Martial Law” documentary in the History & Society category; GMA News & Public Affairs’ election project Camera Juan in the Social Issues category; and GMA Program Support Department’s advocacy campaign Diploma in the Station/ Image Promotion category. Now on its 57th year of honoring programming in all lengths and forms and naming them as the world’s best in TV and films, the New York Festivals selected the winners from thousands of entries received from over 50 countries.

Fans Touched by Aljur Abrenica’s Random Act of Kindess
- AC Soriano, Social Media Specialist www.gmanetwork.com/community
Aljur Abrenica surprised the crowd at a Mall in Libis when he sang his heart out for a cause. While the Kapuso hunk was attending a recent event, a band called Climax was playing nearby for a fundraising project called MusiKARAMAY which aims to “unite artists to use their talents to build lives through music.” This project helps different charities through playing music. Currently, the project is doing its fundraising for children with cancer. “Siya pa talaga ‘yung nakipag-kamay, nakakatuwa,” said Climax band founding member Stanley Seludo, when asked about Aljur’s surprise jamming session with them. He then shared how the Kapuso hunk came to jam with the band.
Whereas on a normal jamming day, the band makes 9,000 to 10,000 pesos. The lucky audience who got to watch Aljur’s surprise jam for a cause weren’t only the ones who were touched by what the Kapuso actor did. Netizens were also moved by the act and admired Aljur’s inclination to help those who are in need. A handsome man with an even better-looking heart – that’s Aljur Abrenica. Catch more of the Kapuso hunk as he plays Kevin on Kambal Sirena, weeknights after 24 Oras. Don’t forget to like and follow Kambal Sirena’s official Facebook and Twitter pages at facebook.com/KambalSirena and @GMAKambalSirena for more updates on the show.
“He sat beside me, ako kasi yung drummer. Ang tagal niyang naka-upo ‘dun. Noong nag-break kami saglit, lumapit siya. He told us that he was moved by the advocacy and the music. Ang galing daw namin, tapos may advocacy pa,” he said. Stanley then invited Aljur to jam with them, which the actor quickly accepted. “Payag siya kaagad pero sabi niya magwiwithdraw lang daw siya. ‘Pag balik niya, he jammed two songs,” he shared. After singing with the band, the Kambal Sirena actor reached for his wallet and gave his donation to the cause. “I don’t know how much pero he was encouraging people to give,” Stanley recalled. And encouraged, they were. Aljur’s random act of kindness had earned the cause more than 11,000 pesos that day.
