ugust is also a word that means “inspiring reverence or admiration”. This month, we showcase programs and people we admire. On the cover is the newest GMA Afternoon Prime show, Nagbabagang Luha. The series brings together some of the country’s finest stars. In Payong Kapuso, we get to know a pillar of entertainment, renowned director, and starmaker, Mr. M, our newest Kapuso. In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, he takes us through his full-circle journey and shares advice on what makes a star. We also meet our fellow Kapuso employees who inform and inspire students during the GMA Virtual Studio Tours. Coming from diverse backgrounds and fields of expertise, these speakers tell us what they love the most about their work and their advice for those who want to pursue a career in the media. Part of what makes August special are the celebrations during this month! We celebrate the 16th anniversary of GMA Pinoy TV and the birthdays of some of our Kapuso stars and personalities—Marian and Dingdong Dantes, Sanya Lopez, and GMA Kapuso Foundation Founder, Mel Tiangco. In this issue, Asia’s Limitless Star, Julie Ann San Jose also tells us more about Limitless, the extraordinary musical journey that inspires people to see the good things around us. Like Julie, may we all see goodness and hope despite the trying times. We trust that everything will be more beautiful, greater, and stronger in time.

“I’m very, very happy. I didn’t expect na mangyayari ang lahat ng ito. Ang gusto ko lang noon ay basta may trabaho lang. Kahit hindi ako maging bida kasi alam ko naman kung gaano kahirap makapasok sa showbiz. Pero God gave me more than what I prayed for,” she said. “Kung sino si Sanya noon ay same Sanya pa rin ang makikita nila ngayon na masayahin at patuloy na magpapasaya sa lahat ng mga sumusuporta sa kanya. ”

CASSY AND MAVY LEGASPI

R

ising Kapuso stars Cassy and Mavy Legaspi are all set to advance in their respective showbiz careers as they renewed their contracts with GMA Artist Center. Cassy won the hearts of Filipino viewers as Nina in the top-rating GMA Telebabad series First Yaya. Now, it’s Mavy’s time to shine as he is part of the cast of the upcoming primetime series I Left My Heart in Sorsogon. Coming from a prominent family in the industry, the Legaspi twins know that it has its pros and cons. Despite these, they continue to give their all in every project they get entrusted with and have picked up valuable lessons throughout the years as they carve their names in show business.

According to Mavy, “You’ll really have to learn through the ups and downs in the industry on your own. Even with all the tips, all the stories my parents told me, ako pa rin ‘yung gagawa ng stories and experiences ko. At the end of the day, it’s really you in this battlefield, ikaw ang gagawa ng actions mo and decisions, most especially when you’re on set, on cam or off cam, I learned to be even more independent and diligent sa craft ko.” Cassy, on the other hand, also shared how she grew in her Kapuso journey, “I’ve learned a lot as an actor and a co-worker. I learned to be more loving, caring, and giving to my coactors, always checking up on them. I guess treating the workplace as my second home. Being a Kapuso for how many years, the people around you really grow on you, they instantly become family and you get comfortable with them and eventually, the values as a Kapuso, start to show within you.”

M FOR MULTIFACETED Unknown to many, Mr. M started his extensive career in show business in GMA when he was 22 years old, fresh from finishing his AB Art History degree from the University of California, Berkeley in the United States. “I’m not exactly a stranger to GMA,” he shares. “A long time ago, GMA-7 was known as Channel 7, and I worked on many shows there with the late Elvira Manahan, and also a lot of musical shows under the father of Jimmy, si Mr. Bibit [Duavit].” In 1969, Mr. M appeared as a folk singer in Uncle Bob’s Lucky 7 Club, the children show of GMA’s then-owner and founder, Robert “Uncle Bob” Stewart. Soon after, he began to work with his mother, the late Elvira Manahan, in her talk show Two for the Road, and with future National Artist for Film Lino Brocka.

During those times, exclusivity to a TV network among on- and off-cam talents was not yet a thing, and Mr. M enjoyed being a freelancer, doing projects for multiple TV stations. Everything changed in 1986 when Mr. M was asked to join and help rebuild the then-newly-reopened ABS-CBN, and for almost four decades, Mr. M became exclusive to the company, both as a director and a starmaker. Now that he’s back to where he started his journey, Mr. M can now say that his life has come full circle. “I’m glad nakabalik din ako, parang bilog na ’yung circle, ’yung circle of life kung tawagin.”

M FOR MOMENTOUS At 74 years old, Mr. M already has the reason to pass the baton to the younger generation,

but as a “showbiz gypsy,” he admits he still looks forward to working where his services and expertise are needed. As a consultant to GMA Artist Center, Mr. M has been tasked to make a difference and discover new actors that could someday make it big, working with GMA Senior Assistant Vice President for Alternative Productions Gigi Santiago-Lara, and GMA Artist Center Assistant Vice President and Head for Talent Imaging and Marketing Unit Simoun Ferrer. Less than a week after his contract signing, Mr. M joined the panel of GMA executives, entertainment directors, and talent managers in discovering promising future superstars.

They should have a love for what they are doing, a love for their craft.”

“I love being around young people. I don’t love being around old people, my classmates. It’s the young people who want to become an artist, and I’m there to give them a helping hand. That’s what motivates me.” As a starmaker behind the country’s biggest stars like Bea Alonzo, Mr. M reveals that he enjoys building talents from scratch more than maintaining a star who already shines bright. “It’s building the talent from the groundup kasi ’pag malaki na silang artista, para mo nang kaibigan, e. You don’t do too much work. They know what to do, or they know what they want. For aspiring actors, Mr. M identifies that one quality that could help them to succeed in the business. “They should have a love for what they are doing, a love for their craft,” he told GMANetwork.com when asked what he thinks makes a great actor. “Dapat ginagalang nila ’yung work ethics and ’yung hours of work kasi ’pag meron silang ganun, they can keep that for the rest of their lives. So, it’s the work ethic, ’yun ’yung pinakaimportante na katangian.”

But before joining the industry, Mr. M warns aspirants to think twice, or even thrice, about their decision. “I think they have to think about it really well, whether they want to be in this business, in show business. Mahirap ito, e. Maraming nangyayari dito na hindi kanais-nais. Kailangan matibay ang loob nila. A lot of people think it’s all about the glamour and glitz pero trabaho ‘yan, e.” “’Pag pinasukan mo ’yan, maraming pipintas sa’yo. Marami ’yung nagbibigay pugay pero I think there are more slings and arrows in show business than praises. They have to think whether they want to be an actor. They should keep thinking if they really want to.”

M FOR MEMORABLE For someone who learns how to build a star just from experience, it is not surprising to know that Mr. M’s memorable moments are hearing the “Thank yous” from celebrities he helped build their careers. “My most memorable moment? Marami, e, but usually kapag pupunta sa’yo ’yung mga baguhan at magpapasalamat,” he admits. “Malaking bagay ’yun sa’kin, e. ’Yung nagpapasalamat sila kasi nakapagensayo sila, nakapag-training, alam nila kung ano gagawin nila sa harap ng camera.”

“More often than not, sila ang dumadating at nagsasabing ‘Maraming salamat,’ and malaking bagay ’yun sa akin, nakakatuwa.” Mr. M has spent most of his life in show business building the careers of celebrities that spanned generations and helping ordinary people become superstars. But when asked about his legacy, Mr. M pauses for a few moments before answering, a candid expression that shows he never once thought about the legacy that he hopes to leave behind. “Oh my God,” Mr. M says, followed by a laugh. “That’s nice, it’s a nice question. I think it demands a little thought. I haven’t thought about that.” In a tone more calm this time, he continues, “I would be satisfied, I suppose, if people remember me as a good grandfather, even if it’s only a small circle, like my family. I hope people remember me as humble. Even if I don’t look humble, I’m humble. They could remember me as [someone who is] working hard, as hard as they work, working hard for their careers, working hard to show off the respect of the public.” In a country where celebrities come and go, one remains a towering figure for over five decades. And we all know him by his single letter name: Mr. M.

I would say that what you see on the screen is just the peak of the core, all the emotions shown are the result of all the people behind it, their passion and eagerness to give world-class shows for our solid KAPUSOs.

JOSEFF TUAZON What do you love most about your work?

What I love most about being a Social Media Producer for GMA News is that it gives us the privilege of being one of the first ones to know what’s happening around the country, given that we’re at the forefront of news gathering in this digital age. It’s like having the first seat as events that could potentially be written in the history books unfold right in front of our eyes! And our job, in some way, makes us feel like we’re a part of it like we could someday brag a lot of things to our grandkids and say, “we were there when that happened.”

What’s the best thing about being a speaker for the Virtual Studio Tours?

My experience so far as one of the speakers for the virtual studio tours have been a lot of things for me: It’s partly challenging as it meant that I’d have to overcome my somewhat social anxiety head-on and grow beyond my comfort zone, partly exhilarating in that I get to show the younger ones what it’s like to be us at work and have them fill our shoes, even for just a day. But most importantly,

Social Media Producer GMA News and Public Affairs it’s very humbling in a sense that it gives me the lasting impression that being able to talk in front of these young, eager minds entail responsibility for their future, where every little word spoken, every little gesture done, could be a seed planted in them, and the thought of it thriving someday is nothing but fulfillment for me.

If your life were a GMA program or movie, what would it be? Why?

I’ve always been a fan of our documentaries, so I guess it would probably be I-Witness, maybe due to my penchant for observing people and think of the untold stories they carry, stories that are out of sight, usually overlooked or hidden from the public eye.

Your advice for those who want to pursue a career in the media industry. Never be afraid to pursue your dreams, but always remember that it will all start on you: You have to believe in yourself first. Don’t let any hurdles and setbacks stop you from achieving what you want and then be prepared to work hard for it.

EA Guzman, Kristoffer Martin, Denise Barbacena, and Jay Arcilla were spoiled with so many surprises along with the overwhelming support by the fans all over the world. The Kapuso abroad travelled back to the ‘80s and got to hear from the cast themselves on how they prepared for the show and what to watch out for in the prequel of GMA’s award-winning and well-loved family sitcom. The cast welcomed questions from the fans where Michael V., fondly known as Bitoy, shared that they had plans on bringing the show to the US and Canada as well. “Yan ang pangarap namin talaga for the show,” said Bitoy who revealed that they were supposed to bring Pepito Manaloto to Dubai, UAE right before the pandemic started. “Not just to shoot or tape an episode, kundi magbigay ng entertainment din sa mga kababayan natin. Siguro mag-hold ng mini-concert, mga press conference, at mga live na ganito with the fans,” said Bitoy who, apart from being the lead actor, Concept Creator, and Creative Director of the sitcom for years, is also behind the show’s catchy theme songs.

(Top to Bottom) Michael V., Manilyn Reyes, and Hachi Yoshida

One of the main highlights of the FunCon was when GMA Pinoy TV showed an anime version of the Pepito Manaloto opening, complete with a Japanese translation of the theme song. The animation was created by Jose Antonio Santos, an avid fan of Bitoy and has been supporting the show since 2010, who also gifted the show a cartoon version of the Pepito Manaloto: Ang Unang Kuwento title card along with the cast. Bitoy, on behalf of the entire show, thanked and applauded the Pinoy animator for his passion and his ‘labor of love’ as he knows that only true fans of Pepito Manaloto would do such great effort. He also learned that Jose did the video animation to cheer him up when he got COVID-19 last year, which made the tribute even more touching and meaningful.

The stars were up for fun and games with How Well Do You Know Dennis? where the three wives were tested through a series of questions about Dennis’ favorites, hobbies, and preferences. The four of them also bared their hearts with the fans about their dream wedding, the first place they’d go to after the pandemic, and their advice to their younger selves in the Complete the Sentence game. Hundreds of fans that attended and watched the FunCon were likewise eager to ask the stars about their preparations and experiences while doing the show and how they immersed themselves in the colorful Muslim culture.

The cast and fans also got to meet Hachi Yoshida, the Japanese composer who created the Japanese version of the show’s theme song coming from his Pinoy YouTube followers’ request. Bitoy and the rest of the cast were very much impressed with Hachi’s talent who did everything by himself – from the translation, musical arrangement, and up to the vocals. Bitoy heartfully commended Hachi and was even open to a possible YouTube collaboration and visit him in Japan after the pandemic. In addition to the fans sharing their art, the artists’ loved ones also took part in the FunCon where Bitoy’s wife and Manilyn’s cousins from abroad and cebu gave heartwarming video messages. Packed with many surprises, the FunCon was indeed an equally enjoyable event for both the Pinoys abroad and for the cast of Pepito Manaloto as it was evident how well-bonded they were.

The riveting family drama, which premiered last July 26, tells the story of a unique family where a Mranaw man, Ismael, played by Kapuso Drama King Dennis Trillo, marries three different women – Alice Dixson, Andrea Torres and Bianca Umali. Legal Wives head writer Suzette Doctolero also joined the FunCon where fans got a peek on how they came up

Alice portrays the role of Ismael’s first wife, Amirah Alonte. She shared how she enjoyed bonding with her co-actors during the lock-in tapings where they got to chat and got to know each other even more despite the challenges of being away from her newborn baby. Andrea, who plays as a non-Muslim woman who will later have conflicts with Alice when she becomes the second wife, revealed that she found Alice intimidating at first, but immediately realized how amicable she actually was during their first lock in meeting. On the other hand, Bianca shared that the major preparation she did for her role was doing a lot of research about the culture and religion. She said that she appreciates how she learns new things in every project and that she’s even grateful for bagging such challenging roles that help her hone her craft.
