GMA Network Strengthens Performance Across All Timeblocks in NUTAM Leads across all dayparts in viewer-rich Urban Luzon and Mega Manila

Momentum shifted back to GMA Network as it closed the gap with ABS-CBN in nationwide TV ratings driven by its strong performance across all time blocks in July. This is according to data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. For the period July 1 to 31, both GMA and ABS-CBN had 34.4 percent total day household audience share. However, GMA reinforced its leadership in viewer-rich Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, where it scored substantial margins over its rival networks. Urban

multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho occupied the top three slots with the country’s most talked about program My Husband’s Lover, flagship newscast 24 Oras, reality sitcom Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento, and weekly drama anthology Magpakailanman joining them in the top 10.

Luzon and Mega Manila account for 76 percent and 59 percent of the total urban TV households nationwide, respectively. Eighteen (18) GMA programs made it in the top 30 list. Primetime dramas Mundo Mo’y Akin, Anna Karenina and

In Mega Manila, 19 GMA shows were in the top 30 list. Mundo Mo’y Akin was number 1 followed by Anna Karenina, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and My Husband’s Lover. Also securing top spots were 24 Oras, Magpakailanman, and Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento.

GMA Reports 12% Increase in H1 2013 Net Income Posts strong growth rates in regular advertising revenues

(L-R) GMA EVP and Chief Financial Officer Felipe S. Yalong, GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr., GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon and GMA Marketing and Productions President and COO Lizelle G. Maralag

Strong advertising revenues propelled GMA Network’s revenues and profits to double digit growth in the first half of 2013.

across our major platforms,” declared GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon. “We expect to ride on this momentum as we continue to fortify our programming and strengthen our presence both locally and abroad.”

The company reported net revenues of P6.725 billion or 14 percent higher than the P5.924 billion earned in the same period last year.

GMA’s flagship Channel 7 grew its advertising revenues by 14 percent, while revenues from the Network’s Regional TV (RTV) operations climbed by a remarkable 60 percent. GMA Dagupan and GMA Cebu continued to be the largest contributors for RTV with the remaining regional stations similarly posting significant improvements.

Boosted by sales during the election period, GMA’s airtime revenues grew by 15 percent and drove the increase in the top line. Operating expenses posted a 13 percent increase to P5.086 billion mainly on higher production costs compounded by non-recurring expenses from mounting the Network’s most comprehensive election coverage to date. General and Administrative Expenses (GAEX) also contributed to the increase due to the rise in personnel expenditure. GMA ended the six-month period with an EBITDA (Earnings Before Interests, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) of P2.291 billion, reflecting a 19 percent improvement over a year ago. This brought the company’s net income to P1.135 billion, up 12 percent from the P1.014 billion generated in the same period last year. “The first six months of the year were marked by sustained revenue growth

Radio hiked up its earnings by 30 percent, while revenues of leading local news channel GMA News TV rose by 16 percent. Meanwhile, GMA International, the business unit that manages the distribution and operations of the Network’s overseas channels, inched up its revenues from licensing and advertising by less than one percent in peso terms. Nonetheless, this segment recorded a 4 percent growth in dollar terms compared to last year. In April, GMA International fortified its presence in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region following its shift to a new carrier, My-HD, a pay-TV platform based in Dubai, and through various cable distribution outlets in the region. Flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV, first international Filipino lifestyle channel - GMA Life TV, and

international news channel - GMA News TV International, are now widely available in this region. They have recently been made available in Palau and Malaysia, too. GMA Life TV, which marked its 5th anniversary in May, and GMA News TV International were likewise launched in Singapore and in several carriers in Canada. GMA Worldwide, the content acquisition and distribution subsidiary of GMA, sold over 1,438 hours of programs and movies to Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, East Timor, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Thailand, Africa and its adjacent islands, among others, during the first half of the year. Sales of Julie Anne San Jose’s self-titled album by GMA Records remained on the uptrend earning a 5X Platinum Record Award from its combined physical and digital sales reaching over 83,000 units for the period August 15, 2012 to June 17, 2013. It continued to do well as an additional 31,000 units were sold February 27, 2013 to June 17, 2013. On the other hand, San Jose’s carrier single “I’ll Be There” received a 4X Platinum Digital Single Award as it registered over 626,000 downloads covering the period August 15, 2012 to June 17, 2013. The young Kapuso singeractress was the very first recipient of this award according to the Philippine Association of the Record Industry.

OF GMA ILOILO’S RATSADA

GMA Iloilo’s Ratsada has established itself as the region’s premiere local newscast, providing viewers with Serbisyong Totoo on a daily basis. Kapuso Magazine (KM) got the chance to interview one of Ratsada’s faces - news anchor and GMA Program Manager for VisMin 1 Cluster Gert Tan-Mabilog. (KM): Ratsada is a household name in Iloilo and neighboring provinces. What makes the newscast a standout in the region? GERT: It’s simply the not-settlingfor-second-best attitude of every man and woman behind the newscast. We are committed to the community we serve, sincere in every effort to find the truth, and dedicated in making a difference where we are. KM: What drives you in your work as Ratsada’s anchor? GERT: I am passionate about my work. And doing what you are most passionate about is a very strong motivation no matter what the circumstances may be. An added motivation is having a grasp of how Ilonggos rely on us as storytellers of the truth. An understanding of this simple truth is enough to inspire me to do better, learn more, and give more. KM: What are the most challenging parts of your job? Why? GERT: Being able to separate one’s emotions while reporting a compelling story, to me, is very challenging. It takes a lot

of maturity, paired with years of training in the industry, to be able to see a story just as it is and not get emotional about it. KM: What makes Ratsada different from other newscasts? GERT: Ratsada is consistently fast in getting the news. It is driven by a desire to serve, fuelled by a deep sense of journalism, and is widely sought after for local news even by Ilonggos outside of the country. KM: What memorable issues/ coverage have been aired by your program this year? GERT: We intensively covered the midterm elections not just in Iloilo but also in the provinces of Capiz, Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras. Each election coverage is admittedly different from the one that preceded it and there are always new things to learn and even unlearn. KM: What would you tell aspiring journalists in Iloilo who dream of becoming a news reporter/anchor someday? GERT: If journalism is their passion, they should pursue it. Being passionate about journalism means understanding its tenets and living up to them. It also means being capable of preserving one’s integrity and credibility even when the temptation to make compromises is very prevalent.

GMA Network and Coca-Cola Philippines Form Alliance to Fight Iron Deficiency Anemia in Filipino Children Coke, GMA and Barangay officials at the MOA signing (Back row, L-R) CCFEL Community Affairs Specialist Trisha Icasiano, CCFEL VP for Public Affairs Atty. Jose Vener C. Ibarra.

GMA Network and Coca-Cola Philippines recently signed an agreement to provide over 3,000 students with the iron-fortified drink NutriJuice. Under GMA’s socio-civic arms GMA Kapuso Foundation and Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko, the Network has committed to identify areas and beneficiaries to receive the orange-flavored drink fortified with Iron, Zinc, Lysine, Vitamins A and C for a period of 120 days. Coca-Cola will facilitate deliveries of NutriJuice, including conducting orientations to beneficiaries to start off each 120-day feeding program. Around 400 malnourished children in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur will receive free NutriJuice as part of GMA Kapuso Foundation’s annual feeding program. Students from Brgy. Vergara in Mandaluyong, Brgy. Oranbo in Pasig and Brgy. Libis in Quezon City will also benefit from the NutriJuice Program under the guidance of the public service program, Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko.

“As we monitor the improvement of these children that are provided with NutriJuice, we can see (first-hand) the impact on them, opening up a lot of opportunities that may lead to the agreement to extend the program. If we can be of help to promote this to all other schools and kids nationwide, we would be very glad to continue this partnership with CocaCola,” said Felipe S. Yalong, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, GMA Network, Inc.

NutriJuice was developed by Coca-Cola Philippines and FNRI-DOST to help reduce the incidence of Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) among school children aged 6 to 12. According to the 2008 National Nutrition Survey, IDA occurs in 19.8% of Filipino children. If left unaided, IDA may cause a permanent deficit of at least 5 IQ points and reduce learning capacity by 10%.

Students from Oranbo Elementary School in Pasig City were among the first to sample NutriJuice. In photo with the students is Barangay Oranbo Captain Ritchie Pua.
