GMA News TV, the country’s number one news channel, and GMA International, which manages and operates the global distribution of the Network’s three overseas channels – GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International – lessened the drop in revenues as both platforms posted positive growth trends. Total operating expenses went down 4 percent to P4.907 billion, mostly from the reduction in production costs equivalent to 5 percent in between periods. EBITDA settled at P1.566 billion, down 32 percent versus 2013, while net income reached P580 million or P555 million less than last year. Despite lower revenues in the first six months, GMA management remains confident that the Company will still hit its yearend target. “We have regained momentum as far as both our nationwide TV ratings and financials are concerned. We are optimistic that the third quarter will be a turning point for the company,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.

GMA Management and Union:
Working Together for a Happy Workplace “We value our people as our best assets.” That core value is in the heart of GMA Network’s culture such that the Company has been acknowledged not only as the broadcast industry’s finest, but also the employer of choice. To date, GMA’s management enjoys a healthy working relationship with its employees’ union, something that the Company is truly proud of. Just recently, the Network signed another Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the employees union in its headquarters in Quezon City. The agreement contains a signing bonus of P95,000 for all rank and file employees, and a wage increase of P7,000 distributed over a period of three years. More importantly, it took only a few days of negotiation before the agreement was sealed. “This clearly manifests the good relationship between the Network’s management and its employees,” says GMA Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon. “Our people can trust that the management will continue to be transparent and generous as far as they are concerned,” Gozon adds. “We were given a better package by management this year compared with the past CBA. There are new provisions in this year’s CBA that were not part of the past agreement such as the hazard and calamity pay, etc., so we are happy,” says GMA Employees’ Union President Robert S. Manalastas.

CBA negotiations during the past decade were also quick, with GMA EVP and CFO Felipe S. Yalong making sure that management and the union are on the same page. “It is important to understand the needs of our people, and to make sure we find ways to provide those needs,” Yalong says. Happy workforce While competition in the broadcast industry is as serious as a heart attack, GMA employees are given means to take their mind off from work from time to time. “Beyond wage increases, bonuses and benefits, we nurture our employees by giving them career growth opportunities, a safe and conducive workplace, and more,” Yalong says. Regular sports tournaments are organized by the Network’s HRD, which promotes camaraderie among the employees. HRD likewise conducts learning seminars that equip the people with the necessary knowledge and skills as they progress in the company.
The GMA family day, on the other hand, is held during GMA’s anniversary in June, where employees and their family members spend a whole day of fun at a famous theme park down South. Birthday celebrators are treated to lunch every month, with no less than Atty. Gozon and some Kapuso celebrities joining the celebration. Moreover, quarterly general assemblies, filled with entertainment and important updates from the CEO, are organized by the Corporate Affairs Division. Various employee communications tools such as the intranet, electronic billboard, etc., are also in place to keep everyone abreast on the latest company developments. Employees can also participate in numerous volunteering activities through the Network’s CSR projects. These are just some of the activities that GMA employees enjoy. “At the end of the day, we want our people to be happy. Their being productive is merely a reflection of their state of mind in the workplace. That’s our secret to success,” Yalong says.

GMA Presents Original Medical Drama Series
COVER STORY
Continuing its tradition of showcasing award-winning original series, GMA News and Public Affairs launches the groundbreaking medical drama, “SA PUSO NI DOK,” inspired by the harsh realities of public health in the Philippines. The series premieres August 24, Sunday, after Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. Award winning actor Dennis Trillo plays stern and mysterious head resident Doctor Dennis, who resists the lure of work abroad to spend his work days serving the sick in Melchora Aquino General Hospital and his personal time tending to the poor in a remote barrio.
DENNIS TRILLO BELA PADILLA
Afraid to love again, Doc Dennis discovers fate has other plans for him in the person of Doc Gab, played by 2014 Famas’ Best Supporting Actress Bela Padilla. Doc Gab is a fresh graduate armed with idealism but not the experience to face daily medical crises such as a hostage taking when a patient runs amok, a bus collision or a fire affecting hundreds of victims. The romantic love story of the two doctors unfolds in the face of these challenging medical scenarios and tragedies as well as the discovery of administrative corruption. The series’ ultimate battle cry is the improvement of public health care in the country. It also pays tribute to the heroism of many of our government employed doctors, nurses and health workers – who value integrity and service for their fellow Filipinos.

Kapuso Village in Tacloban GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) completed the first phase of the Kapuso Village in Tacloban City, Leyte as part of its efforts to help victims of Typhoon Yolanda On July 24, 49 houses were turned over to former residents of Barangay 88 in Tacloban City as part of the 400-unit Kapuso Village Tacloban Project. The Kapuso Village Tacloban Project is in partnership with the City Government of Tacloban and the National Housing Authority (NHA). GMAKF Executive Vice President and COO Ms. Mel C. Tiangco led the ceremonies and assisted by NHA LeyteSamar Projects OIC, Marilyn C. Lauzon including the local government officials of Tacloban. Representatives from Hanabishi were also present to personally hand their donations to the beneficiaries.
Fifteen classrooms in two separate schools in Guiuan, Samar were also inaugurated.
was completed in June. These classrooms are now being used by the students of the two schools, whose young lives were greatly affected by the super typhoon.
On July 25, 5 rehabilitated and 2 newly constructed classrooms were inaugurated at Sulangan National High School, while 6 rehabilitated and 2 newly constructed classrooms were inaugurated at Sulangan Central Elementary School. Both schools are located in Brgy. Sulangan, identified as the hardest hit area in the municipality of Guiuan.
“We definitely saw the need for both schools to have their buildings rehabilitated as well as to have additional classrooms constructed,” said Tiangco on the significance of the project. “We want these children to realize that despite what happened, they must still persevere to reach for their dreams and the first step is to value education.”
Tiangco led the inauguration ceremonies together with Guiuan Municipal Mayor Christopher Sheen P. Gonzales. Also present were Sulangan National High School Principal IV Jesus Esteban S. Lapada, Sulangan Central Elementary School Principal III Epifania G. Gaytos, Sulangan Central Elementary School Principal-in-Charge, Delia Sabulao, CSEE Schools Division Superinterdent Bernardo Adina. The blessing of the buildings was officiated by the Parish Priest of Guiuan Rev. Fr. Joberto A. Picardal.
Meanwhile, a tree planting activity was also featured on last July 23 on Padfour Strait in Brgy. Sulangan, a mangrove area in the Municipality of Guiuan. According to DENR, mangroves are the best plants to protect the coastline and also serve as breeding ground for fishes. Around 200 seedlings of mangroves were planted by students and teachers of Sulangan Elementary School along the coastline of Brgy. Sulangan.
In the wake of Yolanda, it can be recalled that 95 percent of schools in Samar were left damaged; in Sulangan 100 percent of the buildings devastated. Building of the classrooms began in early March and

“This is only the start of the realization of our solid commitment to help rebuild the lives of the many displaced residents of Leyte,” says Tiangco on the sustainable projects that the Foundation has laid out for Yolanda victims. Aside from the ongoing construction of the remaining units in Tacloban, GMAKF also hopes to instil the importance of education among the young. GMA Kapuso pledged the construction of 24 new classrooms under the Kapuso School Development Project within the village. The site is located on a 3.5-hectare plot of land in Brgy. 106, Sto. Nino, Tacloban City donated by the city government of Tacloban. GMAKF is also simultaneously constructing another Kapuso Village in Sitio Caloogan, Brgy. San Jose, Palo, which includes 200 houses and 10 classrooms. This project is earmarked for residents of Barangay San Joaquin, Barangay Baras, Barangay Guindaponan, and Barangay Arado who were displaced by the typhoon Yolanda.
