makes waves Since its debut on February 5, GMA’s local newscast Testigo Northern Mindanao has made waves among viewers in Cagayan De Oro and other parts of Northern Mindanao. The program airs weekdays at 5:05 PM on GMA Channel 12 and Channel 35. Delivering “Serbisyong Totoo,” Testigo aims not just to bring news, but provide Northern Mindanaoans with balanced, fair, accurate, and timely information. Its goal is to deliver news that really matters to audiences in the area, making them aware of events and enabling them to make informed decisions and intelligent choices. Using state-of-the-art broadcasting facilities, Testigo Northern Mindanao reaches households beyond the boundaries of Region X. Aside from serving the homes of CDO, Iligan City, Ozamiz City, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Camiguin, and Lanao del Norte, Testigo Northern Mindanao also reaches people in several parts of Bohol, Zamboanga Provinces, Maguindanao, Davao

Oriental, as well as North and South Cotabato. GMA Northern Mindanao has the widest reach of an originating station outside of Metro Manila. GMA Vice President for Regional TV and Head for Expansion and Production Services Rikki O. Footages of despair and loss, and of heroism and hope “were so compelling” that help was immediately underway as spearheaded by the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Regional TV group. COVER STORY

Kapuso Magazine (KM): How would you describe your job as Testigo’s anchor? Kenneth Ragpala (KR): It is a very challenging, yet fulfilling role. Not everyone is given the opportunity to anchor a news program, much less from the Kapuso Network, which is why I strive always to, at the very least, meet the standards and expectations set by the network. In the Philippines, GMA News and Public Affairs is known to have raised the bar for broadcasting higher -- national and international awards and recognition, innovative and groundbreaking programs, bringing programs and projects for Serbisyong Totoo to areas where they are most needed. KM: What is the most difficult part of your job as anchor? Why?

Q&A with

KENNETH RAGPALA Testigo Northern Mindanao anchor Kenneth Ragpala shares his views on the launch of the program and its impact on the lives of Northern Mindanao viewers.

KR: In my area, I am pitted against veteran anchors who have been in the industry years and years ahead of me. But I believe that my relative lack of experience may be an advantage. It means I am virtually a clean slate. I can soak up more knowledge because I am not confined to any broadcasting philosophy or methodology. But having been immersed in the Kapuso culture, I consider myself lucky to be in good hands. I find the competitive yet nurturing character of the Network very helpful to somebody like me whose experience was geared more towards information technology and sports. I used to own an award-winning sports blog called Filipino Boxing Journal. Though I am a journalist at heart, my medium was different. So I consider Testigo Northern Mindanao an everyday learning experience. As a group, we know that we are only as good as the last program we aired. KM: What can the viewers expect from Testigo Northern Mindanao?

10

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2013 ISSUE

KR: People can expect news that really matters. We are not simply delivering news. We provide them with information that will give our viewers with excellent options, help them make intelligent decisions and informed choices. Viewers can also expect the distinct Kapuso brand of news gathering and delivery – ‘walang kinikilingan, walang pinoprotektahan, walang kasinungalingan, Serbisyong Totoo lang.’ KM: What makes Testigo different from other news casts? Why? KR: I think the very obvious attribute about Testigo is its youthful, dynamic, and enthusiastic team. We are all young and that is a very good thing for us. Even as we adhere to the Ethical and Editorial standards set by the Network, we are open to fresh experiences and new lessons and what we learn, we can apply to our newscast. And that means we can be flexible so we can cater to the distinct viewing needs of our audience. KM: How important is it to have a local news cast in CDO/Northern Mindanao? KR: Cagayan de Oro is a major hub in the island of Mindanao, in terms of politics, economics, and culture. CdeO is a gateway to other major destinations in the island like Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Surigao, and Lanao del Norte to name a few. Putting up a newscast based in CdeO will not only deliver news that matters to these places, but such endeavor will also forge strong bonds between and among all Northern Mindanaoans, regardless of cultural backgrounds, geographical locations, social standings, and creed. That GMA Network has invested millions of pesos in new equipment, facilities and training to produce a program like Testigo Northern Mindanao is also a vote of confidence for this part of the country. Outside Metro Manila, GMA Northern Mindanao has the widest regional news coverage.

FLG on children’s TV: a challenge to keep the excitement, feel the Kapuso Magazine (KM): Sir, TV is said to be a luminous screen in the home and it carries great authority over other influences like newspapers, school, church and even grandparents or parents. Do you agree that the television has, indeed, become the definer and transmitter of society’s values?

Atty. Felipe L. Gozon

Editor’s note: February is the month of love. But love radiated at the Anak TV Fun Family Walk that happened at the UP Diliman grounds on 27 January. Love for family, love for kids and love all around was the theme of that morning. GMA Network’s Corporate Affairs had a quick chat with GMA’s Chairman and CEO, Atty Felipe L. Gozon, who graced the event, with his family in tow. The top executive and doting grandpa shared some of his thoughts about family values and TV viewing.

14

Atty Felipe L Gozon (FLG): To a certain extent, yes. It was Erick Barnouw, the TV historian who attributed such great power to the television set. And if he were alive today, I am sure he would have marveled at how much farther digital technology has taken television. KM: How do you see technology changing the nature or course of television? FLG: Television has moved beyond being a simple cardboard box with moving pictures standing alone in the middle of the living room. Today, we see and hear the television almost everywhere. Content initially meant for TV can now be accessed on mobile devices, tablets, and other gadgets that will flood the market in the near future. KM: How relevant is the work that Anak TV is doing now, given the

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2013 ISSUE

changing nature of television, including programming and personal TV viewing habits? FLG: Anak TV is making great strides in overcoming the challenge of making television child-sensitive. Theirs is not an easy task but their Anak TV Seal has made both the networks and the viewers at large more aware of the importance of family-friendly content for TV. KM: Sir, what do you think is the primary role of the television networks in helping families raise good citizens? FLG: The TV networks should strive to offer programming fare that stimulates the children’s creativity, good judgment and responsibility. We must be mindful and attentive to the needs of this sector of society – after all, our future leaders will be from their lot. Of course, kids will always be kids and they will not always watch shows produced for them, at a certain timeslot that is meant for them. That is why it is equally important for TV stations to show programs that kids want to watch also without too much prodding from their parents.
