G

MA Network’s 70th anniversary celebration begins on a high note as it reclaimed the top spot in the nationwide television ratings competition. Latest data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement show that for January 2020 (with January 26 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA reigned supreme with an average total day people audience share of 34.7 percent in the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM), outscoring ABS-CBN’s 31.7 percent. The Kapuso Network’s NUTAM victory was a result of its impressive performance across all day parts. Providing a head start in the morning block, GMA recorded 28.8 percent people audience share versus competition’s 27.4 percent. GMA’s strong afternoon block brought in the biggest lead with 37.7 percent as against ABS-CBN’s 31.4 percent. Continuing well into the evening block, which includes the hotly contested

primetime slot, GMA posted 34.8 percent while the rival network only got 33.6 percent. The Kapuso Network also ruled in all time blocks with wider margins in both Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which respectively account for 72 and 57 percent of all urban viewers in the country. GMA registered an average of 36.7 percent total day people audience share in Urban Luzon; beating ABS-CBN’s 29.1 percent. With official data from January 1 to 25, the Kapuso Network kept its winning streak in Mega Manila with 37.1 percent, which was way ahead of ABS’ 27 percent. Similarly, more GMA shows made it to NUTAM’s list of top programs for January. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS), which was the undisputed number one show in 2019, still remained in the top spot. GMA also took the lion’s share in the Urban Luzon and Mega Manila top programs lists where it respectively grabbed 19 and 20 spots out of the overall top 30.

Aside from KMJS, the Network’s ratings drivers for January were Magpakailanman, 24 Oras, Pepito Manaloto, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, Daddy’s Gurl, The Gift, Beautiful Justice, Amazing Earth, One of the Baes, Prima Donnas, Eat Bulaga, Kapuso Movie Night, 24 Oras Weekend, Magkaagaw, Wowowin, Bubble Gang, Madrasta, Tadhana, and Imbestigador.

T

he romantic-drama series that captivated hearts all over the world is ready to make its mark on Philippine primetime. One of the world’s most well-loved drama series, Descendants of the Sun (DOTS), makes its highlyanticipated debut on Philippine TV this February. No less than Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes and Ultimate Star Jennylyn Mercado headline the romantic story of alpha team leader Captain Lucas Manalo and cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr. Maxine Dela Cruz, otherwise dearly known as ‘Big Boss’ and ‘Beauty’. “Matagal na rin naming hinihintay na mapanood ito ng mga viewers natin. Story-wise, may tweaks to make it more Pinoy, pero hindi nawawala ‘yung mga elements na nagustuhan ng tao. We’re very excited for this series and we’re very proud of it,” shared Dingdong. Jennylyn echoed his sentiments, “Excited kaming lahat kasi talagang napakalaki ng bawat eksena. Ang hirap niyang gawin pero worth it siya kasi lahat nagtitiyaga at nagtutulong-tulong. Mula sa direktor, sa mga artista, ‘yung buong production team, lahat kumikilos para mapaganda ‘yung show.”

THE STORY

As a medical doctor, Maxine’s shifts are long and busy. Timing was never on their side. One disaster after another befalls upon them, but their love stands stronger than anything that comes their way.

The Gift of Time

Secrets to Love that Lasts

Their story was a story of creativity. She comes from the team that programs content; he comes from the team that creates content. Mitzi was Merchandising Traffic Coordinator and Dino was a copywriter. She used to schedule the plugs he’d write. They worked at the same department, then known as Creative Services. “She was out of my league but she gave me a chance. She was, and still is, my dream girl. And on that fateful day that we officially became a couple, I knew that she’s my answered prayer,” Dino says.

F

rom the set of a phenomenal telenovela to a decade of friendship, from covering breaking news to the halls of creativity–this love month, we celebrate some of our Kapuso couples who held each other’s hands and never let each other go. These stories show that love is everywhere. All we need to do is to open our eyes and let love flood in. What are the secrets to love that lasts? May their stories encourage and enrich your hearts. But most of all, may they inspire you.

Dino is AVP and Creative Director for PSD’s Creative Services Division. He works with a team of writers, designers, and production people that handles imaging and promotions for the Network and all of its channels, programs, and platforms. Mitzi is AVP for Program Management, one of the three content providers of the Network in-charge of sourcing and handling externally-produced content -from blocktimers, co-productions, movies, canned series, and animation.

Now married for nearly 19 years, the couple says love is all about the gift of time. “Make time for each other, to just talk and stay connected,” says Mitzi and Dino. “It was just the two of you in the beginning, and God-willing, you’ll be together for a long time even after the kids have gone on to have their own lives or families. “

Acting as One He never believed in love at first sight until he saw Aizel. “This love grew even more and more until one day I realized that I could not live without her anymore.” She saw an answered prayer in Jei, “I prayed for someone who won’t give up on me no matter what, whose intentions were pure and genuine, who’d court me every single day and someone who has dreams to achieve - all these I saw in Jei.”

Aizel works as an Audio Mixer for Post Production. Her creativity encompasses sound recordings, audio sweetening for dialogues, sound effects and foley, and overall audio mixing. Jei is VTR Ingest Engineer under the CMOSD Engineering Group responsible for ensuring all broadcast materials meet TV broadcast standards before they air. This couple shares their love by volunteering their time at GMA GIVES (Guide, Interact, Volunteer, Educate, and Serve), a CSR program of the Network.

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE

They were married after one year, one month, and one day from the time they met. “With God’s blessing, he and I knew nothing would be impossible,” says Aizel. For this couple married at the tender age of 22, beneath their youth lies deep wisdom. “You may be two different individuals but see to it that you set your goals in life as one. Achieving them may not be easy but it definitely will be if you have a partner supporting you no matter what the cost will be. Love will keep you together but the support will bind you forever.”

Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong stars as “Big Boss” in the Philippines’ local adaption of Descendants of the Sun while Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian will top bill the upcoming serye First Yaya. Aside from these, the couple hosts awardwinning shows, Amazing Earth and Tadhana.

SPECIAL 11

Hands of God He was dedicated to advancing solutions and engineering, she was passionate for bringing game-changing entertainment programs. At the start, Obet was with Maintenance (Engineering) while Janine was a Production Coordinator. Janine had to go to the TV Master (TOC) everyday to monitor the live shows. Since he was assigned to support on-air operations at that time, they saw each other everyday. This was how their love blossomed and the two were married in 2003. How do you know you’ve found the one? “When you meet the person and everything seems to go the right way, you just know,” Obet says. Asked about their one advice for relationships – the couple shares, “it’s all about “mutual patience, understanding and respect and then lift everything to God.”

Janine is Vice President for Business Development Department II for Comedy/Infotainment/ Reality Productions. Obet is AVP for Engineering, responsible for the setup, maintenance and technical support for TV On-air Broadcast Facilities of GMA’s local and international channels. His group also maintains and supports News editing facility, News Automation System, News graphics and weather system, News closed caption system, and the DTT Main Headend system.

A Sense of Wonder She is the Primetime Queen and he the Primetime King. Together they are the country’s royal couple whose wedding was the most anticipated union of its time. He started in showbiz at two years old, while she started in modeling in her teens. Their paths would cross at the iconic adaptation of the Mexicanovela Marimar. But even with their onscreen chemistry, sparks didn’t fly at once. In a magazine interview, Marian said, “Hindi kami magkasundo. At all!” But in an interview with GMANetwork.com, Dingdong reveals something was special, “When I held her, she was like clay that molded itself into my hand. It was like... my hand had its own place on her skin.”

“Always be excited. Find something that excites you every day.” - Dingdong Dantes

Their story on screen and off screen touched people everywhere they went. Today, they continue to inspire people not just with their story, but with their advocacy and family. To them, love is about every day wonders. GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE

Anchored on Faith and Love Sometimes, the best love story comes from a deep friendship. These two award-winning journalists enjoyed a decade of friendship before realizing love was blossoming between them. Mariz was newly hired while Raffy was the "kuya" in the barkada of the Kapuso reporters. They would become best of friends. It took a fellow reporter to bring them together. In a story with GMA Network.com, Pia asked Raffy, “Bakit hindi na lang si Mariz?” Apparently, he was secretly attracted to Mariz. The day after Pia asked the question, Raffy confessed his feelings for Mariz. "The most important ingredient to a lasting relationship is to always maintain a God centered marriage and all else will follow, the couple says. When your marriage is anchored on your faith and love for God, your values are all the more enriched. You respect each other; you trust that both of you only have the best intentions for your spouse; you always maintain a give and take relationship and most of all you love them unconditionally.” The couple adds, “Another key ingredient to a lasting relationship is to always communicate with each other —meaning you don’t just talk but listen always to your spouse and understand them. Maintain your friendship even if you’re already married; always go out on dates and do the things that you love together. Most of all, always laugh and have fun together.”

Mariz and Raffy are both veteran broadcast journalists. Aside from being on the field, Mariz is the newest addition to the award-winning and longest-running morning show Unang Hirit while Raffy co-anchors Balitanghali on GMA News TV.

Give it Your All Did you know that their story began in the halls of justice? Karen was the justice beat reporter for the broadsheet TODAY while Ivan was the newly assigned reporter from GMA.

Karen is senior manager for news research, managing a team of experts on data and information for news across various platforms. Ivan co-anchors 24 Oras Weekend and part of Unang Hirit. He was recently awarded Most Outstanding Kapampangan for the Mass Media Category.

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE

After meeting in 2001, they would become friends and married in 2005, which was also Ivan’s 29th birthday. Their advice for couples – “Karir. Karir-in ang pag-unawa sa isa’t isa,” says Ivan. They also add that understanding one another is very important in any relationship. “Learn to anticipate, to understand and to accept each other,” he shares.

To date, GMAKF has given aid to 40,538 individuals in various areas of Batangas, Laguna and Cavite by distributing relief goods, face masks, hygiene kits, sleeping mats, blankets and other useful goods.

GMAKF Advocate for Health Rocco Nacino and Kapuso artists Benjamin Alves and Yasser Marta, together with veteran actress Tessie Tomas, attended the events to give cheer and distribute relief goods.

The foundation had a two-day medical mission in Batangas last January 28 and 29 where specialists for ears, nose, and throat (ENT), pulmonary ailments, dermatologists, and general medicine were present to extend their services – for free. GMAKF also gave away free medicine and vitamins to both children and adults.

Variety program Wowowin made GMA Kapuso Foundation its beneficiary for host Willie Revillame’s birthday celebration dedicated to Taal evacuees in a live episode last January 27 dubbed, “Malasakit, Pag-asa, Pagmamahal”. Instead of the show’s usual format which includes lots of dancing and lively participation from the audience,

A Heart of Gold Willie filled the studio with material donations they collected from sponsors, showbiz personalities, and various GMA departments. Various Kapuso artists also showed their support and expressed their compassion by packing the relief goods. All the donations such as rice, gallons of water, pillows and blankets, soap, medicine, and grocery items were turned over to GMAKF for distribution. In addition, Willie also handed a one-million-peso check to Lipa City House Representative Vilma Santos to extend help in Batangas.

GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) received a one-million-peso donation from Anvil Business Club, Inc., an organization of young Filipino Chinese entrepreneurs, to support its on-going Taal relief operations. Present in the courtesy visit and donation turnover were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon and GMAKF EVP and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog together with the officers of the Anvil Business Club headed by Chairman Wilson Lee Flores and President Hubert Henry Chua.

GMAKF continues to accept monetary donations. To donate, visit www.gmanetwork.com/kapusofoundation/ donate, or contact 8928-9351 or 8928-4299.
