Julie Anne San Jose, Christian Bautista all set for Kapuso Concerts
2018: A Year of Breakthroughs for Julie Anne San Jose I
t was a solid year for Asia’s Pop Sweetheart Julie Anne San Jose.
Early in 2018, Julie welcomed her loyal fans in an intimate and heartfelt solo concert, #Julie, where she sang about the stages of love. The trending show at the Music Museum was a sold out success that marked the start of what was bound to be a memorable year for the 24-year old Kapuso singer, TV host and actress. Aside from being on the cover of multiple magazines and publications, Julie Anne returned to acting in the well-loved musical series ‘My Guitar Princess’ as Celina, the aspiring singer who relentlessly chased her dreams. She is also the voice of Vicky in the first-ever Filipino anime series, ‘Barangay 143’, and brings show-stopping numbers to GMA Network’s top-rating musical variety show, ‘Studio 7’, every week. She remains a mainstay on ‘Sunday PinaSaya’, the country’s number one comedy-musical variety program and award-winning weekend comedy sitcom, ‘Pepito Manaloto’, as well. More than these, Julie Anne received the German Moreno Youth Achievement Award in the 2018 Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards (FAMAS) and was hailed as the Female Pop Artist of the Year in the 9th PMPC Star Awards for Music.
But the highlight of Julie Anne’s year was inarguably her music. Julie Anne’s first single under Universal Records entitled ‘Nothing Left’ soared to the top of music charts just minutes after its release. The same went for her OPM single ‘Tayong Dalawa’ which debuted at #1 on the iTunes PH charts after only 30 minutes. The Kapuso singer then launched her muchawaited ‘Breakthrough’ album which again, climbed and remained on the top of iTunes Philippines All-Genre Chart for an entire week—a rare feat for OPM albums. Last October, Julie Anne took part in the Awit At Laro album, a collaboration of the country’s top recording artists and musical composers produced by Gary Valenciano and Manila Genesis for the benefit of UNICEF, Shining Light Foundation Inc., and Tukod Foundation Inc. Their advocacy celebrates the spirit of Filipino games through music and arts to make both children and adults to let go of their gadgets and play. Julie Anne also showcased her talent in a series of successful local and international concerts, including the ‘3 Stars, 1 Heart’ concerts in Cebu, Dagupan, and Dubai, and the early Christmas treat to Kapuso Abroad in ‘Kapusong Pinoy: Paskuhan at Kantawanan sa Anaheim’ at The Grove of Anaheim in Los Angeles, California last October 7.

MA Network recently hosted a successful immersion tour for the 2018 Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPro) delegates which consisted of ten outstanding young US-based professionals. The immersion tour, led by GMA’s global arm GMA International, gave the delegates an overview of GMA’s programs as well as its contribution to the broadcast industry in the Philippines. Moreover, the FYLPro delegates engaged in a meaningful panel discussion with GMA News Pillar Howie Severino, GMA Senior Assistant Vice President for Alternative Productions Gigi Santiago-Lara, and Kapuso actress Heart Evangelista about content creation in the Philippines and how it can be relevant to other parts of the globe. And in true Filipino-American spirit, the immersion tour concluded with a Thanksgiving dinner in celebration of Thanksgiving Day in the US. “We once again open our doors to the FYLPRO delegates at a time when we are now in the so-called experience and sharing economy.
GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2019 ISSUE
We hope that you enjoy your interaction with our executives, stars, and staff as as we share ideas on how best to respond to the challenges of the Filipino community in the US,” GMA International Head Joseph Francia said in his welcome remarks. One of the delegates, Baron Lloyd Cabalona, who was born and raised in Tacloban and is now based in Chicago as a musical director, shared how he enjoyed their visit. “This is my first time in GMA and it feels really good. The discussion we had was very refreshing because it’s nice to know that a company such as GMA is willing to adapt and hear the youth’s voice especially that of FilipinoAmericans,” he said. The FYLPro delegates are selected each year by the Philippine Embassy in the United States, in cooperation with Ayala Foundation Inc. Under the program, the delegates visit and engage in a dialogue with the country’s policymakers, industry leaders, media, cultural experts, and social entrepreneurs for them to maintain a grassroots approach to working locally in various industries which will have an impact nationally and globally.

undreds of Kapuso abroad who came home for the holidays gathered in one special night as Asia’s Romantic Balladeer Christian Bautista and Kapuso actress Andrea Torres successfully headlined “Awit Pasasalamat: A Tribute to Overseas Filipinos.” The show held last December 15 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater served as GMA Pinoy TV’s warm welcome to balikbayans and at the same time a send-off to Filipino workers who are flying out of the country. Further showcasing Pinoy talent were guest performers Joey Ayala, Rose Fostanes, Tanya Dawood and even fellow overseas Filipinos. Through the exclusive media sponsorship of GMA Network’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV, ‘Awit Pasasalamat’ was organized by the Advocates and Keepers Organization of OFWs (AKO-OFW).

apuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera personally handed over to GMA Kapuso Foundation the proceeds from ‘Celebrity Ukay-Ukay’ to help fund GMAKF’s projects for children. Marian, who was one of the ambassadors for the 2018 GMA Celebrity Ukay-Ukay, sold her pre-loved items at her own booth at the Noel Bazaar last December. “Sabi ko talaga after nitong bazaar, kailangang maibigay ko ito kay Tita Mel ng buo. Kung ano ‘yung talagang binayad sa akin nung mga bumili, gusto ko talagang ibigay ng aktwal,” said Marian. She gratefully shared that her fans also took part in manning the booth. “Gusto ko rin siyempre na malaman nung mga bumili na nakapagshopping na sila, nakatulong pa sila. At ang maganda nyan,
lahat ng proceeds na ito ay mapupunta sa mga batang kapos-palad para makapagaral,” she added. GMAKF Founder and Ambassador Mel C. Tiangco admired Marian’s generosity. “I was amazed that she would take the effort to do that for the Foundation to come and join us in this journey, in this fight to alleviate the poverty, to alleviate ‘yung hirap ng mga kababayan natin.” Moreover, GMAKF EVP and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog said that Marian’s donation will be used to buy complete sets of school supplies and school bags for incoming Kinder and Grade 1 students in GMAKF’s Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan project for 2019. MA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) recently turned over the second Kapuso school built in Marawi City under the ‘Rebuild Marawi Project’. Through the joint efforts of its multi-sectoral partners and donors, GMAKF was able to rehabilitate two classrooms and build four classrooms, and a total of 12 gender-sensitive restrooms at Pendolonan Elementary School. GMAKF is the first nongovernment organization to turnover a newly constructed school in Marawi City last October, exactly a year after its liberation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from the Maute terrorist group.
