GMA Network allocates over P20 billion for CAPEX, content cost for 2021-2023 G

MA Network, Inc., the Philippines’ largest TV network, is going all-out as it earmarks more than P20 billion for its capital expenditures (CAPEX) budget and content cost for 2021 to 2023. GMA’s projected three-year CAPEX includes the construction of a new building and state-of-the-art studios inside the GMA Network complex in Quezon City. A huge portion of its budget is also allocated for content production and post-production. The budget likewise covers the continuing expansion of its digital terrestrial television (DTT) reach and various projects in the regions to further strengthen GMA’s presence nationwide. The Network is also set to officially unveil early this year its mobile digital TV receiver, GMA Now, which will enable viewers to watch TV on the go for free with bonus interactive features. While the Kapuso Network was not spared in the global crisis in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sevendecade strong media giant was able to recover its airtime sales during the second half of the year coupled with the highly successful launch of its DTT receiver, GMA Affordabox, in June.

Aside from its programs on main channel GMA-7 and on GMA News TV, the Kapuso Network also offers viewers a variety of content through its digital channels – Heart of Asia for avid Asianovela fans; Hallypop for Asian pop culture; and DepEd TV to help Filipino learners access DepEd’s blended learning program across the country. The Network, as part of its 70th anniversary celebration last year, also produced the country’s first-ever virtual reality concert via the sold-out Alden’s Reality featuring Asia’s Multimedia Star Alden Richards. Further diversifying its programming, GMA is the new home of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for Season 96 to 101 – including the centennial year of the Philippines’ first athletic league in 2024. As it continuously strengthens its content across all platforms, GMA Network remains steadfast in ensuring the timely delivery of relevant news and information during these trying times as well as bringing world-class entertainment to Filipinos here and abroad.

Surpassing seven “decades is no easy feat for our company especially during an exceptionally challenging year in 2020, but we are very proud of what we have achieved so far through our people’s dedication and our commitment to Serbisyong Totoo. We wholeheartedly thank all our Kapuso for their unrelenting support to GMA. Rest assured that your Kapuso Network will continue to provide only the best for our viewers.

2020: A year of non-stop Serbisyong Totoo for GMA Network

A

s the year 2020 proved to be by far one of the toughest – with all the different crises brought about by the pandemic as well as natural and man-made calamities that tested the Filipino spirit – GMA Network soldiered on to deliver Serbisyong Totoo as it remained as the Filipinos’ top news and free entertainment source. Based on Nielsen Phils. TV Audience Measurement’s Total Philippines data for 2020 (from January 1 to December 26), GMA reached over 98.5 percent of TV households with an estimated 84.1 million viewers nationwide.

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |JANUARY 2021 ISSUE

GMA was also the most watched channel in Total Philippines for the said period with 48.3 percent people audience share. In both Total Luzon and Total Visayas, GMA’s net reach was similarly at 98.6 percent of TV households, while posting 49.8 and 47.7 percent people audience shares, respectively. In Total Mindanao, GMA was able to reach 97.9 percent of TV households with 42.2 percent people audience share. The Kapuso Network started strong in 2020. For the period January to May 5, GMA was already ahead of ABS-CBN in terms of both reach and viewership before the latter

went off air in May. GMA registered over 95 percent household reach and was also on top with its 33.1 percent people audience share during the said period. Primetime newscast 24 Oras, which emerged as the country’s top news program for 2020, headlines the Network’s News and Public Affairs line-up that consistently serves as one of GMA’s main thrusts. In terms of total broadcast hours, GMA and GMA News TV devoted a combined average of 18 hours daily – from January to December 2020 – for various news and public affairs programs.

UPDATES 5

GMA allotted almost 25 percent of its actual airtime to news and public affairs shows, which was equivalent to around 4.5 hours daily; while these accounted for 75 percent of GMA News TV’s programming or 13.5 hours daily on the average. For radio, GMA’s flagship stations were no. 1 in both Mega Manila’s AM and FM lists. According to Nielsen’s Radio Audience Measurement, Super Radyo DZBB recorded 41.9 percent audience share among AM stations and reach of over 2.3 million listeners while Barangay LS 97.1 scored 29.5 percent audience share among FM stations and reach of 4.8 million listeners as of December 2020. Super Radyo DYSS 999 similarly took the number one spot in Cebu’s AM list with a whopping 74.6 percent audience share, while Barangay FM 107.1 bested other FM stations in Bacolod with 55.4 percent audience share as of Q4 2020. Further, DZBB delivered special coverages to provide up-to-the-minute updates on the

different events that happened in the country via the Bantay COVID-19 Special Coverage, Bantay Bulkan, as well as Bantay Bagyo, Bantay Baha, and now Bantay Bakuna which also aired on Dobol B sa News TV. On digital platforms, GMA News and Public Affairs had a banner year as it led in video viewership and engagement. According to Tubular Labs data, GMA News was the most viewed news media organization in the Philippines on both YouTube and Facebook for the year. It peaked in May 2020 at the 5th spot worldwide at the height of the Luzon lockdown. GMA News was also the frontrunner for all Philippine news pages on Facebook in total engagement, based on CrowdTangle data. In addition, GMA Public Affairs reached 10 million subscribers on YouTube in April 2020, making GMA Network the first Philippine media organization with two Diamond Creator Awards from the streaming site.

With 2020 being an eventful year, GMA Network faces 2021 with optimism as it recently unveiled this year’s new lineup of offerings. Kapuso viewers are set to witness the launch of its mobile digital TV receiver GMA Now following the highly-successful GMA Affordabox—which, despite the pandemic—sold almost 1 million units in only six months last year. The Kapuso Network likewise offers viewers a variety of content through its digital channels Heart of Asia and Hallypop; as well as DepEd TV that provides Filipino learners free access to DepEd’s blended learning program across the country. GMA is also set to broadcast the NCAA games on GMA-7, GMA News TV, GMA Pinoy TV, and via online streaming on the GMA portal. Viewers can expect more exciting projects from GMA as 2021 unfolds.

Considered as one of this generation’s notable journalists, Araullo previously anchored the pioneering mobile journalism newscast “Stand for Truth” where he led the new breed of journalists with the program’s compelling and exclusive stories. Pulido, who is known for her passion for news and in-depth reporting, made a niche in the industry for her exclusive reports and coverage on significant national issues. She anchored the afternoon daily newscast “Balita Pilipinas Ngayon” alongside Mark Salazar where they reported on the day’s news from the different regions in the Philippines. Both Araullo and Pulido have shown their eloquence beyond news reporting. A documentarist at heart, Araullo also banners the bi-monthly documentary show “The Atom Araullo Specials” and is one of the hosts of the top-notch documentary program “I-Witness.” Pulido, on the other hand, has extended her craft in journalism to investigative reporting via the internationally-acclaimed public affairs program “Reporter’s Notebook,” which she hosts together with Jun Veneracion. They continue to gain honors from various award-giving bodies. At the 2020 New York Festivals Television and Film Awards, Araullo’s “Babies4Sale. the Best Investigative Report category. The same episode previously emerged as national winner in the Best Documentary Programme (one-off) category at the Asian Academy Creative Awards and received a “highly commended” plaque from the Association for International Broadcasting (AIBs) Awards in 2019. Just recently, The Atom Araullo Specials’ “Nang Tumigil ang Mundo’” was named as the Best TV Special at the 42nd Catholic Mass Media Awards. Meanwhile, Pulido’s stories for Reporter’s Notebook gave the Philippines numerous recognitions. Her in-depth report “Backdoor” about Filipinos who illegally entered Malaysia, won the Silver Screen Award at the 2006 U.S. International Film & Video Festival. In 2008, her story “Batang Kalakal” took home the Gold World Medal for Best Human Interest Story at the New York Festivals Television and Film Awards. This was followed by another gold medal in 2017 for her Reporter’s Notebook episode “Pasan-Pasang Pangarap.” This year, Reporter’s Notebook was recognized as Best Public Service Program at the 42nd Catholic Mass Media Awards for her story “Mga Sugat ni Miguel”. As seasoned journalists, Araullo and Pulido are expected to show an accurate and deep understanding of the stories they present and help the audience make sense of the news— its importance, implications, and context. “We want to continue the excellent contextual news reporting that State of the Nation became known for under the irreplaceable Jessica Soho. At the same time, we want to bring important national

stories even closer to everyday Filipinos who are ultimately most affected by these events,” Araullo said. As a veteran news reporter and documentarist, Pulido added: “I’ve been in the streets, rain or shine, at peace or in war time, COVID or no COVID, covering the news for more than two decades. I won’t be just reading the news for State of the Nation, I will be covering the news we will be delivering on that day. We hope to deliver the news with more context, not just the whos and the whens.” Originally anchored by GMA News Pillar Jessica Soho, State of the Nation has been providing viewers with depth and context to the headlines. It is geared to provide the audience not only with stories that matter, but with insightful and well-explained reporting of the day’s biggest news as well. The newscast is known for securing first and exclusive interviews where viewers are sure to gain added knowledge and a wider perspective of the issue at hand. It recently took home the Best News Program win at the 42nd Catholic Mass Media Awards for its “Tracing the Origins of COVID-19 in the Philippines” story. Viewers can still watch Soho in the awardwinning and trending news magazine program “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” airing on GMA Network as well as other special programs of GMA News and Public Affairs. After several months of hiatus due to the pandemic, the star-studded cast are all set to gift their loyal fans with a recap of the heartwarming series which they have consistently followed since its pilot airing. Love of My Life dwells on the atypical relationship of the Gonzales family. Isabella (Coney Reyes), the matriarch, is a rich widow with high standards who would stop at nothing to get what’s best for her sons - Nikolai (Mikael Daez), the youngest son who has grown into a rebellious man, and Stefano (Tom Rodriguez), the favorite son who also happens to father the child of his former lover, Kelly (Rhian Ramos). Amidst his mother’s objection, Stefano pursues Adelle (Carla Abellana), a widow with a child who manages her own handicraft business. Their seemingly perfect life crumbles not only when Kelly barges into the picture along with the estranged Nikolai, but also when Stefano gets diagnosed with a terminal illness. Playing equally vital roles are Anna Marin as Siony, Adelle’s doting and supportive mother; Vaness del Moral as Joyce, Adelle’s strict but supportive friend who also helps run her handicraft business; Geleen Eugenio as Manang Eden, the Gonzales’ family cook and a warm-hearted spinster; GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |JANUARY 2021 ISSUE

Samantha Lopez as Janice, Isabella’s fashionable and loyal personal assistant; Maey Bautista as Cha-mae, Adelle’s humorous and kikay friend who works in her handicraft business; Angeli Bayani as Osang, Eden’s niece who will take over her duties for the Gonzales family and become Kelly’s friend; Ethan Hariot as Gideon, Kelly’s charming son from Stefano whom he abandoned; Raphael Landicho as Andrei, Adelle’s adorable son from her exboyfriend; Levi Ignacio as Mang Arsing, the Gonzales’ trusted driver who is also a close friend of Isabella’s sons; Carl Guevarra as Kiel, close confidante and business partner of Stefano; and Dino Pastrano as Elmer, Adelle’s loving brother who manages their family farm. As the series airs anew, the cast members reveal how they feel about working in the new normal and alongside each other, their memorable experiences on set, and what’s the most valuable lesson they learned this year. Coney took to Instagram to commend Carla and Rhian’s utmost professionalism, “Happy to be working for the first time in a TV drama with Carla Abellana and Rhian Ramos. These two young actresses exhibit excellent work ethics and display remarkable acting skills. I would say they are underrated. Through time, I know they will get even better and shine even brighter! Such gems of GMA.” Carla, in turn, shares in one of her YouTube vlogs about her experiences on set, “So

far, so great. Nag-eenjoy kaming lahat dito. We’re very grateful for our work and for this place. Hindi lang kami makapagusap-usap dahil concentrated talaga kami sa aming mga eksena lalo na sa mga linya namin given na for seven weeks ang hawak naming scripts.” Rhian also expresses her gratitude towards her co-stars and the production team after the success of their lock-in taping, “Our lock-in taping for Love of My Life has come to an end, and I’m leaving our bubble with memories I’ll cherish. So many good times. In the end, it’s those things I take with me. It’s amazing what we were able to achieve despite all challenges. Ipinagmamalaki kong makasama sa isang palabas na gawa ninyo, thank you for having me in your team.” Meanwhile, Mikael imparts what this year has taught him, “In terms of the feelings of anxiety, helplessness, fear – they’re all there. But I guess one thing I can focus on is that towards the end, noong natuloy ‘yung lock-in taping namin for Love of My Life, I did see positive aspects of this year suddenly sprouting. Para sa akin, this new normal, as difficult as the adjustment may have been, it is bringing about different and new opportunities. I guess we just have to take it in stride.” Don’t miss the highly-anticipated recap of ‘Love of My Life – under the helm of esteemed director Don Michael Perez – weeknights, only on GMA Network.
