GMA Urges Public to Live

‘I M READY’ LIFESTYLE

GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon urged the public to “make preparedness a part of everybody’s lifestyle” at the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) among partners of the one-stop shop for public safety information – the GMA News’ IM READY Public Service Portal.

“Disasters,” Gozon emphasized, “can overwhelm even the best-prepared countries like Japan and the United States.” And unfortunately, if what climate change experts say turn out to be true, all citizens of the world will have more of the unexpected and ‘never befores’ as far as natural calamities are concerned. The IM Ready Public Service Portal seeks to empower ordinary Filipinos to make life-changing decisions to keep safe. It will feature real time updates on weather and traffic situations in the metro, basic information on fares, maps and routes, and even class suspensions. GMA’s partners are: MMDA, DOST, PAGASA / PROJECT NOAH, DOTC, MRT and PNR. GMA also partnered with Google, which very recently acquired the community-based traffic application Waze that is widely regarded as a game changer for traffic and disaster and risk

management. Using Waze, the I M Ready Portal can get relevant up-to-the minute crowd-sourced information. With this partnership, GMA Network is now the official media partner of Waze in the Philippines. “As a media organization, we believe we have a responsibility to do more than just raise awareness of what's going on and what will likely happen. To be more relevant, we need to empower people not only to respond better to disaster and emergency situations but adapt a way of life that will prepare them for the worst. So now more than ever, preparedness is the name of the game,” Gozon said. In signing the MOA for IM Ready at the GMA Network Center in Quezon City, service partners collectively lauded the move not only as timely and relevant but ground-breaking, too.

SPECIAL

Q&A with GMA Dagupan’s Q

&

A

W I T H

ALFIE TULAGAN JETTE ARCELLANA Kapuso Magazine (KM) chats with GMA Dagupan’s early morning newscast (Primera Balita) anchors.

ALFIE TULAGAN

Kapuso Magazine (KM): What does Primera Balita offer to its viewers?

JETTE ARCELLANA

ALFIE TULAGAN (AT): Primera Balita serves as the “alarm clock” of viewers in North and Central Luzon. We offer fresh, hot and significant news and information that capture the hearts and interests of our viewers. At the start of the program, we say, “Gising-gising mga Kapuso.” We have to make sure that when they wake up early, it’s worth their effort and time. JETTE ARCELLANA (JA): Similar to a perfect cup of coffee, Primera Balita is a complete mix of various news stories. It caters to a wide range of viewers as it provides updates on national issues, weather, prices of commodities, traffic, police matters, politics, events and festivities.

KM: What are the most challenging parts of hosting a morning newscast? AT: Reading a lot of news and information before the program starts is a must for us. When we present newspaper headlines, we have to banter or exchange ideas about the story. One challenge is scrutinizing news headlines and translating them into simple terms that viewers could understand without having to read the whole news item. Macro issues are not decoded into fragments but are segmented in such a way that viewers are enlightened. JA: Being the alarm clock of viewers is both a challenge and a responsibility. But every morning’s challenge is worth beating.

KM: What memorable issues/coverage have been aired by Primera Balita? AT: Covering calamities and disasters is always a challenge for the whole team. Airing live is another story, especially when the station and its surroundings are submerged in water. People behind Primera Balita show extraordinary passion and dedication to their work. This is one reason, I believe, why viewers love to watch our show - they see us working with high spirits against all odds. JA: Hagupit ni Habagat was a challenging coverage for Primera Balita. It was a week-long continuous coverage from different areas in Region 1, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Cordillera.

KM: Please describe yourself off cam AT: Ironically, I still consider myself a shy-type. I love to hang out with friends for coffee, movie and fellowship. I am comfortable wearing sneakers, tattered jeans and t-shirt. Usually, people describe me as younger and slim compared with the image they see on TV. JA: “Smile everyday,” that is my line at the end of the program and when off the camera, I still “I smile everyday.” Smiling for me does not only mean stretching one’s lips but taking positive views in life. My tone, my views and my gestures are all the same on and off the camera. I’m passionate about legal issues.

Fil-Canadian Senator, Pinoy Community Give Dialysis Machines to Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko BY XIANE ARCANGEL, GMA NEWS

(L-R): Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko President Orly Mercado, East Avenue Medical Center Chief Medical Profession Staff 2 Dra. Maria Victoria Abesamis, East Avenue Medical Center Chief Nurse Nora Diaz, Mrs. Rosemer Enverga, GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon, Senator Tobias Enverga, RGMA President Mike Enriquez and GMA International VP Joseph Francia

Although he no longer carries a Philippine passport, FilipinoCanadian senator Tobias Enverga Jr. continues to honor his Filipino roots by seeking ways to help kababayans in need.

Canada, told GMA News Online that the group decided to donate dialysis machines to help poor kidney patients manage their condition despite the lack of funds. He said helping kidney patients is a cause close to his heart since his own mother also used to undergo dialysis.

Together with his wife Rosemer and officials of the non-profit group Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF), Enverga turned over seven dialysis machines to Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko (KKMK) during a courtesy call to GMA Network Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Felipe Gozon. The dialysis machines are seen to benefit several indigent patients assisted by KKMK whose kidneys have failed but who do not have the means to undergo dialysis on a regular basis. Data from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development show that chronic kidney disease currently affects one in every 10 adult Filipinos. Kidney failure, meanwhile, now ranks as the ninth leading cause of death among Filipinos. Enverga, the first and only senator of Filipino descent in the Parliament of

“I know how hard it is for people with problematic kidneys to undergo dialysis since it’s very expensive. Some people just die because they choose not to spend for the procedure at all. Donating these machines is our way of helping poor kidney patients extend their lives,” Enverga said. The senator said he will be flying to Iloilo as part of his 15-day visit to the Philippines to discuss the kinds of assistance that can be given to the victims of typhoon Yolanda. Prior to his appointment in 2012 as a legislator representing Ontario, Enverga was a project manager at the Bank of Montreal, where he worked for more than 30 years. He also served as a school trustee on the Toronto Catholic District School Board, and was a community leader active in several organizations, including the

Canadian Multicultural Council – Asians in Ontario and the Philippine Independence Day Council. He established PCCF in 2008 to consolidate the charitable efforts being made by Filipino communities in Canada for the benefit of poor families in the Philippines. The organization has been donating the proceeds of its fund-raising activities to non-profit organizations in the Philippines, including GMA Kapuso Foundation. Enverga holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila, and a Masters Certificate in Project Management from the Schulich School of Business at York University in Ontario. In 2008, he received the Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino award from thenPresident Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for his contribution to Philippine progress and development. Four years later, in 2012, he was awarded the Queen’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Medal of Distinction. Enverga, 58, is expected to serve as senator in the Parliament of Canada until the age of 75.
