implements action plans and manages the day-to-day business of GMA Radio. With more than two decades of industry experience, he oversees the branding and nationwide programming of AM and FM radio stations resulting to higher ratings and profitability. During his tenure as Vice President, his team launched the highly successful ‘Dobol B sa News TV’, now titled ‘Dobol B TV’, which provides radio news content to TV viewers through the simulcast of Super Radyo DZBB on GTV. Further, the Network’s flagship AM and FM stations Super Radyo DZBB 594 and Barangay LS 97.1 have been consistently No.1 in Mega Manila. Meanwhile, GMA also appointed two new Vice Presidents in the Finance and ICT Group. Mercedes Macy T. Sueña was promoted to Vice President and Head of the Financial Reporting and Services Department. She is mainly responsible for ensuring the Network’s compliance
with statutory financial reporting and providing timely and relevant information to management, as well as in creating synergies on the revenue and receivables cycle and related fund management. Sueña, who has been a Kapuso for 18 years now, has given invaluable contribution in helping make GMA’s sound financial management one of its key strengths as a company. During her stint along with the Network’s launch of international operations, GMA was granted a non-pioneer status as a New Export Producer of Television and Motion Picture by the Board of Investments, and was qualified for an Income Tax Holiday (ITH) grant for four (4) years. While making sure that the Company was able to enjoy the full benefit of the grant for the given period, Sueña also facilitated the extension of an additional or bonus year of the ITH incentive. Because of this, the Company was likewise able to generate hundreds of millions in tax savings.
Lastly, Rolando G. Sanico, Jr. was appointed Vice President and Head of the Group Controllership and Tax Compliance Department. With over two decades of solid experience in GMA Finance, Sanico has headed four divisions of the department across the years where he helped innovate systems and institutionalized several practices that contributed to the Network’s more efficient processes. He was the Project Manager in GMA’s transformation from manual to a computerized accounting system with the implementation of Oracle ERP system in 2011, which became the cornerstone of GMA’s financial information system for over 12 years. In 2014, he was designated again to lead the implementation of SAP ECC system currently being used by all companies of the GMA Group. Recently, he successfully directed the GMA Business Continuity Planning (GMA BCP) team that ensured that all systems were accessible for employees working from home for continuous business operations during the first lockdown in March 2020.

T
ravel back to the ‘80s and discover where and how it all began in the much-awaited prequel of GMA Network’s award-winning and well-loved family sitcom.
THE STARS
Set in the ‘80s in a small and close-knit barangay in Caniogan, Bulacan, the show brings back the kilig and sentimentality of the period along with its socio-cultural nuances - all before the age of modernday technology - that will surely revive nostalgic memories for all audiences.
The prequel introduces the fresh team-up of two of the Network’s highly-talented stars - Sef Cadayona as Pepito Manaloto, a shy but smart boy from Bulacan who always finds ways to earn money for his family and is always ready to lend a helping hand to those who are in need; and Mikee Quintos as Elsa dela Cruz, a book-smart and extremely competitive student transferee from Cebu who loves to cook and whose charm easily captures the hearts of her classmates.
THE STORY
THE CAST
‘Ang Unang Kuwento’ follows the life of a teenage boy named Pepito and his shenanigans in school and at home with his best friend Patrick, and his love-and-hate relationship with his classmate and future wife, Elsa. Apart from the romance between Pepito and Elsa, the prequel also explores why luck seems to be Pepito’s friend and how his kindheartedness always saves him from the troubles he gets into.
Making Pepito and Elsa’s lives even more colorful and fun are Pokwang as Aling Tarsing Batumbakal, Mang Benny’s sweetheart who owns a cafeteria in the barangay and who treats Pepito as her own son; Gladys Reyes as Aling Rosa Generoso, Patrick’s mother who washes clothes for a living and is a certified gossipmonger in the barangay; Archie Alemania as Mang Benny Manaloto, Pepito’s widowed father who works as a truck assistant and loves money-making bets; Kokoy de Santos
as Patrick Generoso, Pepito’s goodfor-nothing and clumsy best friend who usually gets the two of them in trouble; EA Guzman as Nando, Patrick’s obnoxious brother and Aling Rosa’s favorite son who excels in sports and brings pride to their family; Kristoffer Martin as Wendell, the closeted classmate of Pepito and Patrick who hides his sexuality by bullying others; Denise Barbacena as Elma, Pepito’s unattractive neighbor who is always teased by his friends and has a secret crush on Pepito; Jay Arcilla as Eric, the haughty best friend of Wendell; Angel Guardian as Beth, Pepito’s classmate who has a crush on Patrick and is also Elsa’s friend. Original cast members Manilyn Reynes and Michael V. will also be present in the prequel as narrators to tell the love story of young Pepito and Elsa. Michael V., apart from being the lead actor, Concept Creator, and Creative Director of the sitcom for years, is also behind the catchy theme song of Ang Unang Kuwento.

“
COURAGEOUS, curious, and always eager to take on new challenges For someone who is used to showbiz’s bright lights, the award-winning actress felt suddenly awestruck by the enormity of the moment. Bea, for the first time in her 20-year career, found herself in unfamiliar but pleasant territory. Bea’s transfer was made official in a contract signing event at Edsa ShangriLa in Mandaluyong City. “It feels great. It feels a bit surreal, of course. But it feels great, I feel like I’m embarking on a new adventure,” Bea told GMANetwork.com in an exclusive interview. “Para siyang new chapter, so parang everything’s new. I’m so excited for the new projects to be made with me and the other Kapuso stars. I’m beyond excited to meet them, excited ako na libutin ang bago kong tahanan, to meet new friends, and work in a new environment this time.” In a way, that pretty much sums up Bea’s life story – courageous, curious, and always eager to take on new challenges.
Family Dynamics Born on October 17, 1987, Phylbert Angelli Ranollo, popularly known as Bea Alonzo, is the daughter of British national Philip Fagestrom and Filipina Mary Anne Ranollo. Philip and Mary Anne separated when Bea was four years old. The actress never met her father again–and she’s long learned to keep it that way.
14
GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | JULY 2021 ISSUE
Finding love again, Mary Anne would eventually marry Dondon Carlos. Their union was blessed with a son, James. “At first parang hindi ko pa siya tinatanggap pero alam mo itong stepdad ko po, parang naging biggest blessings sa pamilya namin kasi siya ‘yung parang naging glue. Siya ‘yung dahilan kung bakit kami ganito ka-close,” Bea said about her stepdad. “Sometimes gusto mo parang ’yun bang traditional family, ’di ba? But sometimes, there are also blended families and sometimes, it just works. You just have to be happy about it.”
Dreaming Big Bea’s entry to show business was not purely brought out by luck. While fate played a huge role in getting Bea to where she is now, it can also be said that the amiable actress sought the limelight with relentless determination. She recalled watching television and dreaming of becoming an actress as a young kid growing up in Taguig. “As early as nagka-isip ako [gusto ko na mag-artista]. Kasi dati talaga as in ginagaya ko ‘yong mga nakikita ko sa TV, sumasayaw ako, umiiyak ako, umaacting ako, ginagaya ko sila. So, siguro mga around five years old,” Bea told

GMANetwork.com. “Alam mo ‘yong ‘pag tinatanong ka ‘pag bata ka, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I would always say [that] I want to be an actress.” Bea’s dream started to take shape when she joined the Mutya ng Pasig pageant in 2001 after winning Binibining Santolan. Designer Oskar Peralta was one of the invited judges. Incidentally, Oskar is a good friend of Archie Ilagan, who eventually became Bea’s first manager. Oskar recalled being taken by Bea’s charm, particularly by her pretty, expressive eyes. He knew right there and then that the young pageant bet was star material. With a manager behind her, Bea mustered enough courage to audition in ABS-CBN upon the invitation of its talent center management. Fortunately, Bea passed the audition and was packaged as one of the network’s new crop of talents. She was launched as part of Star Circle Batch 10. But Bea at the time was still an upstart and her situation behind the camera did not turn around overnight.
“Galing kasi ako sa mahirap na pamilya. Mahirap maging mahirap kapag naguumpisa ka mag-artista,” Bea confided. “Wala kaming kotse so nakikisabay lang ako sa staff, sa crew. Nung time na ‘yon hindi pa uso ang mga stylist so nanghihiram lang ako sa mga kapitbahay namin ng damit. Kasi ’pag normal na tao ka naman konti lang naman ang mga damit mo.” She continued, “Of course, ’yong struggle to prove something, to leave a mark in the industry. Those were my early struggles. But I have to say that it was all worth it because I was chasing my dream.” Part of Bea’s sacrifices for the sake of her showbiz career was to quit school, which over time has become a source of insecurity for the actress, even to this day despite her success and many accomplishments.
I’m so excited for the new projects to be made with me and the other Kapuso stars. I’m beyond excited to meet them, excited ako na libutin ang bago kong tahanan, to meet new friends, and work in a new environment this time.”
“I was working early, I started when I was 13 so I couldn’t serve two masters at the same time. I had to choose one and I chose my career,” explained Bea. “But meron naman akong initiative to read books, to watch documentaries, sometimes to even join workshops like the one by [esteemed screenwriter] Sir Ricky Lee. “Sumali ako sa scriptwriting workshop niya and parang feeling ko mas na-i-enrich ’yong kaalaman mo when you join those kind of workshops.”

You learn from them, you become a better person because of those mistakes.” She poignantly added, “Siguro if there is one thing I regret is hindi ko na-savor ’yong mga moments na dapat sinavor ko. ’Yong time na ’yon parang naienvelope ka dun sa lahat ng noises. “That is why right now, before coming here, I promise myself that I will savor this moment. Pero these past few months parang na-train ako to talk into the camera, like talking to a friend.” Vlogging made Bea accessible to her fans and it allowed the actress to share her life away from the spotlight. She thoroughly enjoyed the vlogging process and it led her to discover more about herself and unlock hidden skills as well. In March this year, Bea agreed to do a movie with Kapuso star Alden Richards to be produced by Viva Films, GMA Pictures, and APT Entertainment. The two will top-bill the Philippine adaptation of the Japanese TV drama titled Pure Soul, which inspired the 2004 South Korean film A Moment to Remember.
Then came GMA’s offer for Bea to join the network to do projects and appear in its shows. The timing, said Bea, “felt right” and she seriously considered the offer, with veteran manager Shirley Kuan taking care of the negotiations on her behalf.

We always had to get all sides,” Marissa writes on Kapuso: The GMA Story. “Our operations were small-scale… it was that kind of small-scale operations powered by dedicated individuals.” The News and Public Affairs group under Flores continues to be the recipient of international awards, notably the New York Festivals, US International Film and Video Festival Awards, Asian TV Awards. Asked what is she most grateful for about GMA, Marissa says: "For being given the chance to work in public affairs specials in 1987, which paved the way for building the public affairs department of the network. For growing professionally, learning from the best, and eventually being entrusted the leadership of the most trusted and most awarded News and Public Affairs organization in the country. I hope to be able to pass on a legacy of excellence, and ethical and responsible journalism to the next generation of GMA News and Public Affairs leaders. For working alongside a team of dedicated, committed, and talented managers and staff. I could not have gone this far without them." Take us back to the beginning. How did you start in GMA? What was it like then? I started my stint with GMA as an on-the-job trainee and later was hired as a contractual employee in 1989. Back then, GMA’s corporate name was Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. and the network was known as GMA Radio Television Arts, the station “Where You Belong”. Early in the ’90s, we were attending computer literacy training (PC DOS, Wordstar, and Lotus 123 courses) and I remember at that time office computers use removable floppy diskettes for data storage. It was also during this period that cellular phones were introduced in the Philippines and the mobile phone industry in the country was in its infancy stage.
What are you most grateful for about working in GMA? I am grateful for the opportunity of working with passionate and dedicated colleagues and bosses across departments in the network. I am equally as grateful for the chance to be a part of the team that strategizes, plans, and implements the TV network expansion program as it has been a worthwhile experience seeing projects coming to fruition and achieving their desired results and benefits for the company.
If you can give a piece of advice to your fellow Kapuso employees, what would it be? Work is something to be enjoyed, not endured. When you enjoy your work, your heart will be in your work. And how do you know if you enjoy your work? You excel in it! You can only do your best at the things that you truly enjoy. It is difficult to excel at something you just endure or treat as “just a job”. Enjoy your work here in GMA and excel in it, Kapuso!

GENUINE CARE In 2001, GMA Network welcomed me into its fold and my life has never been the same again. Among many things to be grateful for, is this company makes me feel that we truly are its best assets. I have been blessed to become part of this organization that gives genuine care for the overall well-being of its people. And in my two decades as a Kapuso, I would say that this pandemic gave a whole new meaning to the word ‘care.’ GMA made sure to cover all bases – from sanitization of work areas to flexible work arrangements, from our daily vitamins to vaccines, and so much more – to protect its employees. I am very much thankful to the Lord for blessing me much more than I deserve! I am proud to be a Kapuso and I am staying for the long run.

The Network taught me that everything that we do in the company is interconnected and is aimed towards one goal: to give Serbisyong Totoo to the people. This serves as a reminder and an inspiration for me as well to do better at what I do.
Always look at the bright side of every situation no matter how hard and challenging it is. Positive lang at magtiwala sa sarili, kahit gaano kahirap makakaya at malalampasan. Hindi basta sumusuko ang tunay na Kapuso.
Being a Kapuso is such a privilege and reaching 5 years as a regular employee is something I am proud of. GROWTH I’m grateful for the opportunity that GMA Regional TV has given me for the past 5 years to work with the best team. I appreciate the trust and guidance of my bosses. PERSEVERANCE If I will choose one lesson among the many lessons I learned from GMA, I would highlight PERSEVERANCE. What does it mean to persevere? “I thought it would be interesting to weave reality with fiction and come up with a riveting adventure drama on primetime TV. I’m also hoping that the story would help educate our viewers about these fascinating but feared creatures with whom we share our many rivers, lakes, and seas,” Soho said through the production team. She added that the inspiration came “from all the crocodile stories we follow on KMJS, even in far-away islands like Balabac in Palawan. Humans versus crocodiles!” Dakila, who will be Lolong’s (Ruru) friend in the story, is made of fiberglass body and silicone skin. Referred to as the "highest paid actor" of the series,

For this reason, I’ve always been fascinated with storytelling — something that I still enjoy till now when I write my documentaries. Kaya when the invitation for Pinoy A+ came, I was so excited to be a part of it. Not only does this project impart knowledge to young kids... it is also a good opportunity to highlight the Filipino language and our beautiful Filipino values.” The Kapuso abroad also praised GMA Pinoy TV for bringing an effective program that helps educate and entertain the audience. A
s part of the Network’s environmental advocacy project Kapuso ng Kalikasan, GMA recently partnered with Maynilad to adopt one hectare of tree planting site in the Ipo Watershed. Under Maynilad’s Plant for Life program, its partner-communities planted 400 Narra saplings at GMA’s site in Mt. Balagbag, which is part of the Ipo Watershed. This
initiative aims to rehabilitate and reforest Metro Manila’s main sources of water supply to help prevent land erosion, flooding, and drought. For several years now, GMA has been working hand in hand with Maynilad by deploying employee-volunteers, dubbed GMA G.I.V.E.S. (Guide, Interact, Volunteer, Educate, and Serve), to the latter’s coastal clean-up and tree planting activities.
