hen you look closely at the letters of the word FATHER, you’ll see another word forming—and that word is HEART. In this issue, we get to know what goes on inside a father’s heart as we zoom into the other side of our Kapuso leaders. We know them as men who bring together transformative leadership, unwavering integrity, and an eye on the future. This time, they share their thoughts as role models and pillars of their families. We also hear from other Kapuso dads, on what the pandemic has taught them about fatherhood. In celebration of GMA’s 71st anniversary, we share a special video that spotlights Kapuso employees and welcome awardwinning artists to our family. GMA continues to be the most trusted brand with awards from Reader’s Digest and Rotary Club Manila. It took the top spot among media organizations in a report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. But above all awards, there is an important award that tops all else and that is you, our dear Kapuso. Asahan niyo po na sa lahat ng oras, palagi kaming Buong Puso Para Sa Pilipino.

RCM dedicated this year’s awards to honor media outlets in print, radio, and TV networks “which remained open as formal outlets for reports and information on important events and government actions that impact on the lives of our people and to encourage awareness on matters of public concern.”

At GMA, we go beyond quality. Over the years, we have produced gamechanging and innovative programs that created an impact in the TV industry and even, to a certain extent, in the Filipino culture. We give viewers a healthy balance of credible and relevant news and public affairs programming as well as meaningful storylines for entertainment.” Atty. Felipe L. Gozon Chairman and CEO

GMA SVP for News and Public Affairs Marissa L. Flores received the award on behalf of GMA. In her acceptance speech during the virtual event, Flores thanked the RCM and dedicated the award to the various teams of the Network who remained steadfast in delivering the much-needed news to Filipinos. “GMA News and public affairs teams – in television, radio, and web – have covered all kinds of major events and calamities – but perhaps in recent time, none as risky as this pandemic. It is to them – reporters, crew, our field and production personnel and staff – those who work tirelessly to deliver the news, that we dedicate this recognition. I can only imagine the fear, worry, and anxiety that many of them face every day when they have to leave their homes and families to cover stories about this invisible enemy,” Flores shared.

n celebration of GMA’s 71st anniversary, we get to know the other side of our leaders – Felipe L. Gozon, Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr., Joel Marcelo G. Jimenez, also known as FLG, JRD and JGJ respectively. Away from the boardroom and the spotlights, we go into their hearts and ask about one of the most magical gifts—fatherhood.

Put God First Felipe L. Gozon Chairman and CEO

What is your message for your GMA family? At the risk of sounding like a broken record, my short message to my colleagues and fellow workers in GMA is to always give your best in whatever you do and don’t give up no matter the odds in trying to reach our goals.

What do you enjoy doing the most with your children during the lockdown?

Philip M.Gozon, Anthony Martin Abrogar (Andy) holding Felipe Enrique Gozon III (Henry), Ria A. Gozon, Anja Teresa Abrogar (Anja), Annette Gozon holding Arianna A. Gozon, TMG, FLG, Maritess and Blas Viterbo with their kids: Mio Santiago (Fort) , Blas Henry (Bono), Sebastian George (Basti) and Rafael Felipe (Raffy).

H

e is known as FLG at the Kapuso Network. Under his helm, GMA rose from the bottom of Philippine television to the Number 1 spot in ratings, reach, and revenues. Today, GMA is the most trusted news source in the country, home to awardwinning documentaries, and a pioneer of original Filipino programs. But aside from leading GMA to greater heights, there is one more thing that he considers as one of the noblest and most critical tasks—being a father. “But unlike other disciplines that are or can be learned in school or at work, fatherhood has no instructional manual. It is something that we learn and nurture in practice, feel in our hearts and grow as a result of our own experience,” says Gozon in his speech as one of the 21st Ulirang Ama Awardees.

How has the pandemic changed your family life? Even something as bad as a pandemic can result in positive things. Everything has a silver lining. Of course, the

lockdown has caused major changes in our daily routines. We had to get used to doing everything from inside the house, from doing the groceries to attending meetings. We also live in fear of being infected, so we all take extra precautions not to let the virus enter our household. But this past year has further strengthened our bond with each other because we have our meals together daily. Tessie and I, our three children, and our grandchildren always look forward to our daily lunches because we get to talk about everything. Before the pandemic, we would have a complete family meal only on weekends. So this has been a blessing. My grandchildren have grown closer to each other and us. I have particularly enjoyed watching my two youngest grandchildren grow before my own eyes in this past year. We are fortunate that we have a swimming pool and a lawn big enough for our grandchildren to play in. As you can imagine, our pool has never been used more, from morning to afternoon.

Lately, I have been thoroughly enjoying playing chess with my grandchild, Raffy. He was such a novice at the start but now he can even beat me. I swim almost daily with Arianna and Henry (the two youngest grandchildren, 3 1/2 and 2 years old respectively) and in the afternoons, I watch them play in the garden while I study and relax.

Were there any pleasant surprises or discoveries about each other during this time that you would like to share with your GMA family? One of my discoveries is that if you want help with your smart gadgets (that we have grown to depend on especially during the pandemic), you have to call your grandchildren to help you.

What lesson/s from your father do you cherish the most? There are many lessons I learned from my father. But what stands out was, to be honest in what you do and to treat others fairly. Before he died, he advised me not to run for any political office and enter government service, both of which he did.

What is the most important piece of advice that you would like your children to follow? My most important advice to my children is of course to put God first in their lives. If they do this, then everything else follows. GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | JUNE 2021 ISSUE

e played a key role in the rise and growth of the Network and its people. Apart from championing excellence in content, production, and engineering in GMA, Mr. Duavit or JRD, is one of the brains behind two of the finest Filipino films ever made—Jose Rizal, a film made in celebration of the Centennial of the Philippine Independence and Muro Ami, known for its breathtaking underwater cinematography. Both movie productions reaped critical acclaim and commercial success. His expertise in leadership and his heart for the people trace its roots back to a lesson he learned from his father, the late GMA Chairman Gilberto M. Duavit, Sr.: “One of the best legacies one can leave behind is that of having played a part in the lives and growth of others.”

L-R: Jaime, JRD, Javi

How has the pandemic changed your family life? The pandemic has brought us much closer. With more time spent together, we’ve grown to know, understand, support, and appreciate each other even more; as we deal with the changes, challenges, and frustrations that have come with the pandemic as a family.

What do you enjoy doing most with your children during the lockdown? Eating! Aside from sharing a common love for food, mealtime is when we are able to really share thoughts, jokes, interests, and even new ideas with each other.

What is the most important piece of advice that you would like your children to follow? Do the best you can in everything you do. Don’t be discouraged if or when you make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. The important thing is that you learn from the mistakes you make and move forward.

What lesson/s from your father do you cherish the most? My father taught me many things. Among these the ones that I cherish most are: “One of the best legacies one can leave behind is that of having played a part in the lives and growth of others.” and, “It’s not only about how you go up but also about how you come down.” GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | JUNE 2021 ISSUE

Happiness comes from within Joel G. Jimenez Director and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee

COVER people. I love seeing people grow and lead better lives.

What is the most important piece of advice that you would like your children to follow? I always tell them that happiness comes from within. Not because of acquired things, other people, and circumstances.

What is your message for your GMA family? L-R: Jaime, Bianca, Sofia, wife Gidget, and JGJ

I

remember my dad telling us how he had to face creditors, suppliers, bankers to try and get GMA on its feet,” wrote Mr. Joel G. Jimenez or JGJ on the book Kapuso: The GMA Story. Little did he know that he would soon be working with the Network. From working and raising a family in Los Angeles, JGJ came back and joined GMA Marketing. He later became President of Alta Productions Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Network that produced award-winning shows and commercials for corporate accounts. Apart from his business acumen and leadership, there is one thing he loves to do that he inherited from his father—teaching and mentoring.

How has the pandemic changed your family life? Nothing much has changed except I find myself working much later in the evening. It seems like work and family have blended into one. Since I am at home and get to spend time with my family, I realize that zoom calls, pouring over documents, answering emails, signing checks, etc extend to around 11 pm. So in a nutshell, I’m home all the time and I also work all the time. But it is also nice to be home and not rushing from one meeting to another. However, I do encounter multiple zoom meetings that sometimes really make me go crazy.

What do you enjoy doing the most with your children during the lockdown?

Since Gidget and I are home all the time and my kids all flew home to Manila during the pandemic, we get to spend time with each other. I said to everyone, “This is the longest time we have all been together in a long time.” It has gotten the family closer and we all enjoy trading stories during lunch and dinner, playing games, and hanging out. It’s also an opportunity for Gidget and me to advise and counsel them.

Were there any pleasant surprises or discoveries about each other during this time that you would like to share with your GMA family? I was thinking that it’s been a while since the whole family was under one roof. Since all three are in the US the get-togethers have been short 2-week vacations 2 or 3 times a year. So I was observing my kids if they would fight or argue since they were here in the house the whole time but there were no such incidents. I guess since everyone has been apart, there was a greater appreciation of the opportunity to be together.

What lesson/s from your father do you cherish the most? MRJ as he is commonly known likes to mentor. This is a trait I have learned and cherished from him. I enjoy mentoring people too. Whether it’s in my organization or being a life coach to

Hello fellow Daddy Kapuso. Take time to spend with your kids. Be with them as they grow up since these precious times will never come back. Be there with and for them. For maybe the first 12 years of their lives you are the HERO, you are their Superman. Their world revolves around you. But unfortunately for young fathers, this is also the time they are at work trying to make a name for themselves. So my advice is, yes be the Superman, you have to be both the father of your kids and the up and coming superstar of your company. But spend as much time with your kids. Talk to them. Make them feel you are their superhero because one day they will grow up and they will have other superheroes in their lives (boyfriends, girlfriends, other mentors, best friends ) and you just want to make sure that you are still one of them :) Love you Kapuso!

What lesson/s from your father do you cherish the most? MRJ as he is commonly known likes to mentor. This is a trait I have learned and cherished from him. I enjoy mentoring people too. Whether it’s in my organization or being a life coach to people. I love seeing people grow and lead better lives.

Always half glass full. That said, being trapped inside our home allowed me to better appreciate my three children–15, 11, and 7 of age–who are all going through a phase that is likely to significantly impact the kind of people that they will grow up to be. I see things in them now that I missed when time spent with them was limited to early mornings, sometimes evenings, weekends, and holidays. The pandemic allowed me to know them better, be more involved,

and allow them to turn me into a better person overall. Talks about senior high tracks with Ash, the NBA playoffs and online gaming rigs with Raf, and “the air up there” with Ali have made the pandemic less appalling. The pandemic also allowed me to devote early mornings which used to be time allotted for the commute to work to time to reflect on things that define me, fatherhood included, committing to be the best father that I can be to my biological children and my NMI family. Happy Father’s Day.

I am grateful for the pause the pandemic has given my family to reconnect and strengthen bonds. I learned about empathy, truly listening, understanding, and respecting the feelings and points of view of my children, which may differ from mine. I discovered unique personality traits and talents that should be developed and supported, rather than just focusing on weaknesses.

I appreciated that there is room for vulnerability and gentleness, even as there will be moments to be firm. I was reminded that as fathers, I am a mere steward of our children. They will one day leave the fold. Motivated by sacrificial love, I can lead, guide, and mold them while I can. t’s about sharing both good times and bad. And even in bad times, we can derive something good. I was among the first COVID patients, back in March 2020 when the pandemic was just beginning and most doctors had little idea how to treat someone with COVID. One of my biggest fears was not just losing my life but my young son losing his father and a future with a father. So when I was lucky enough to survive, I became constantly aware that any day could be my last, and you shouldn’t do anything you could regret or put off anything important to you and your family. Then a year after my COVID

experience, my son became a probable COVID case and spent nine days in the hospital with symptoms but without a clear diagnosis. I spent nearly the entire time in his hospital room with him, just the two of us, worrying but also bonding in about as intense a way as any parent can with a child. Our experiences one year apart taught us in a very gutwrenching way how precious life is and how we can’t take any of it for granted.

In his exclusive interview with GMANetwork. com, Juancho talked about his whole journey to fatherhood, from the time he was a little child observing his father, to becoming one of the “sons” that GMA nurtured and molded, and up to the time he became a devoted husband and father.

Juancho, the son If there’s one memory that Juancho loves to look back on during his childhood, it would definitely be growing up watching his father play basketball, and eventually developing a love for the sport. “Fondest memory ko of my dad is I used to watch him play basketball a lot, and marami siyang stories kasi matangkad din siya,” Juancho recalled. “So, marami siyang

papano namin siya pinalaki, kung in a negative way or a positive way. Obviously, there are no perfect ways, but ’yun nga, ’yung pressure na pinag-uusapan ko is just a lot and (it’s) exciting also.” And since he’s well aware of the great responsibility that comes with fatherhood, Juancho is making sure he will try to be the best father that he can be. He knows exactly how he is gearing up to take on the biggest role that he will be playing in his life.

mga experiences and palagi ko siyang pinapanood kapag may mga competition siya sa company nila or sa intervillage. So, I think that inspired me a lot to play sports also. That parang shaped also my characteristic as a man right now.” Like many of us, Juancho’s childhood was not always filled with sunshine and rainbows. There were also difficulties that his family faced, which had a great impact on his personality and outlook in life as he was growing up. “Of course, meron. Meron kaming challenges din. I grew up with four other siblings,” Juancho revealed. “It wasn’t easy for my parents to provide, lalo na siyempre noong mga unang panahon hindi naman kasing laki ng money ang meron ngayon, e.” Although he was young then, Juancho knew the value of his parents’ sacrifices for them. So, it became his lifelong mission to do well in his studies and make all his mom and dad’s hard work worth it. In case you didn’t know, Juancho earned his Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship degree from De La Salle University after 12 years, mainly

because at some point he had to put his education on hold for his acting career. Aside from his biological father, Juancho has a father figure in showbiz that he looks up to. It’s none other than Direk Ricky Davao, whom Juancho has worked with on several occasions. “Siguro sa showbiz mismo, si Direk Ricky Davao. He has been a director— my director—and marami rin kaming ginawang projects as co-artists, kaya maraming opportunities that I get to learn from him. And I get to pick his brain kasi marami na nga siyang pinagdaanan sa industriya na ’to. Kaya para sa’kin, kung sa industriya, si Direk Ricky talaga ’yung isa sa mga ni-lu-look up ko.”

Juancho, the husband A year after Juancho and wife, Joyce Pring, tied the knot, they surprised their fans and followers with the delightful news that they were expecting their first child. “Being a husband, walang off switch ’yan, ’tsaka being a parent also. And nakaka-pressure siya in a sense na we are responsible for a soul that we’re going to mold from the very beginning, ’di ba? So, it’s a very big responsibility to have because siyempre makikita mo kung

“Papaano pinaghahandaan ‘yun? A lot of prayers. No matter how many books we read, minsan ’di ba, iba pa rin kapag nandiyan na. Yes, we do our part. We read our books pa rin. We attend a lot of parenting classes sa ngayon, and we make sure that our marriage is strong, because isa rin ’yun sa makikita ng anak namin, kung papaano namin mahalin ang isa’t isa.”

PAYONG KAPUSO parati mo naman talagang mararanasan ’yon, but it’s tough kasi. Lalo na when you’re growing up na akala mo ’yun na talaga ’yung pagmamahal, ’yung mga puppy love nung high school. It’s such a traumatizing experience also. Pero ’yun nga e, it also really shapes how you are as a man, if you get past heartbreaks.” And when it comes to his parenting style, Juancho doesn’t want to be labeled as one extreme type of dad. He said he wants to strike a balance between being a strict dad and a cool dad. “A little bit of both, a strict and cool dad. Malaki ang role kasi ng having a father guide a child, from what we’ve learned and experienced also. Kaya gusto kong maging close sa kanya and also gusto ko maging, you know, someone that would help him to be the man he would be in the future.” On July 2, 2021, Juancho and Joyce welcomed their first born son, Alonso Eliam Pring Trivino.

“I think it’s still going to be a lot of learning, a lot of classes that we’ll attend, a lot of adversity, and a lot of, you know, ’yung mga good times and bad that we will learn from and grow from. Siguro, I think, in general, it’s a lot of having an open mind and the willingness to change over time. That’s going to be important for us in the future.”

Juancho, the father We asked Juancho to look far into the future and share what he foresees and wishes for his son. The good-looking actor started off by enumerating the physical and nonphysical traits that he wants his son to take after him. “Siguro ang gusto kong mamana niya sa akin is ’yung having an open mind, how I deal with pressure, (and) how I deal with hard times. So, marami ang nagdideal with hard times differently, ako kasi I deal with it in a very positive way. I’m not saying hindi ako nahihirapan; nahihirapan ako. (But) I tend to have a perspective na this will make me better. Alam mo ’yon? May rason kung bakit nangyayari sa’kin ang mga bagay na ’to.

GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | JUNE 2021 ISSUE

On a lighter note, ’yung height ko gusto ko mamana niya. Gusto ko maging at least 6’2” or 6’3” siya.” While it seems like Juancho wants his son to fulfill a dream he once had for himself, Juancho was quick to clarify that they’ll be rooting for their son whatever sport he might be interested in. In general, he prays that his son will love sports as much as he and his wife, Joyce, do. “Ultimate dream ko is… I don’t know, may frustration kasi ako playing professionally ng sports. Gusto namin ’yon for him. Gusto rin namin siyang maging pro in any field that he would want to [get into]. Hindi namin alam. I mean, kahit ano’ng sport naman na magugustuhan niya would be okay for us. Kami ni Joyce kasi we’re very sporty, e. So, kahit ano, hindi natin alam kung ano’ng uso by that time, so makikita natin.”

What’s the one thing he would not like his son to go through? “Heartbreak ang ayokong maranasan niya. Although siyempre to an extent

Finally, Juancho shared some of the plans he has for his family in the near future. And just like many of us, traveling and making memories are some of the things that Juancho prays that he could do soon with his loved ones. Despite the challenges up ahead, the journey to fatherhood really seems like one exciting and rewarding adventure. And with many positive things to look forward to, we totally get why Juancho is hyped up about his new role in life.

From seeing Joyce my love deliver (literally froze me to death), hearing our baby cry for the first time (took my breath away) and held him in my arms for the first time (couldn’t stop looking at him). I will always thank God for everything and now especially the gift of Life.

Leave no one behind,” he shares. I’m really happy and excited to be working with him in a series again.” Meanwhile, Anna expresses her gratitude to the Kapuso Network for entrusting her with this TV project, “It is really a blessing for me na pagkatiwalaan ako ng GMA na mapabilang sa isang napakagandang proyekto na ito. MA Network’s socio-civic arm, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc. (GMAKF), was recently awarded a grant of PhP800,000 from the New Zealand Embassy, under the High Embassy Fund-Manila. Allocated for GMAKF’s Kapuso School Development program, the grant will help build two Kapuso classrooms in Calassitan Elementary School in Sto Niño, Cagayan. This support will benefit the Agta/Aguy Indigeneous People who live in this remote town. Calassitan Elementary School and other schools sustained heavy damage caused by typhoon Ulysses last year which prompted GMA Kapuso Foundation to build new classrooms to provide a safe environment to public elementary students and teachers in the area. “30% of the school’s population are members of the Agta tribe and indigenous people are a priority beneficiary group of GMA Kapuso Foundation,” shared Rikki Escudero, Catibog, GMAKF Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

NEW ZEALAND HIGH EMBASSY FUND

The New Zealand Embassy supported GMA Kapuso Foundation’s Kapuso School Development because of the Agta/Aguy Indigenous People who live in this remote town and who will use the new Kapuso classrooms. New Zealand Ambassador Peter Kell said, “The New Zealand Government advocates for the recognition and inclusion of indigenous knowledge and economic participation. Through the New Zealand High Embassy Fund, we are supporting small-scale, short-term community projects that contribute to wider community well-being. This will help to address issues of social exclusion, poverty, and inequity. We are proud to support GMA Kapuso Foundation in its Calassitan Elementary School Development project which aims to provide a healthy educational environment to indigenous students.” Please lay this out as photo caption: The groundbreaking ceremony of Calassitan Elementary School was attended by Ms. Rikki Escudero, Catibog, GMAKF EVP/COO, and its multisectoral partners: Lt. Gen. Arnulfo Marcelo

Burgos Jr. AFP, Mayor Atty. Vicente G, Pagurayan, and Dr. Lauro Daquioag, Public School District Supervisor.

THE PARTNERS

The Philippine Army fully supports this project through the crucial help of the 5th Infantry Division, 501st Infantry Brigade, 17th Infantry Battalion, 51st Engineer Brigade, and the 513 Engineer Combat Battalion. The Army is committed to provide transportation, security and technical, engineering manpower to see the project through. Valuable service partners who provided material products are DwightSteel, PPG Coatings (Philippines) Inc., Holcim Philippines Inc., Manila Water Foundation, Isuzu Philippines Corporation, Sanitec Bath, and Kitchen Specialist, and Yale Home Philippines. GMA Kapuso Foundation is building a total of 6 classrooms at Calassitan Elementary School and Abariongan Elementary School in Sto. Niño Cagayan and Bural Elementary School in Rizal, Cagayan set to be turned over this year. A steel and concrete bridge will also be built at Barangay Umiray, Dingalan, Aurora and 6 classrooms will be rehabilitated at Villa Aurora Elementary School, Maria Aurora, Aurora this year.
