GMA Network 2019 Annual Stockholders’ Meeting Magandang umaga sa inyong lahat! Welcome to our Annual Stockholders’ Meeting. Before we start, I would like to congratulate our News department for a successful coverage of the recently-concluded Eleksyon 2019. While most of us watched the activities unfold in our homes, the men and women of GMA News were deployed all around the country, diligently reporting the proceedings as timely and accurately as possible. This is a clear example of Serbisyong Totoo. Now, let me share with you some of the highlights of GMA Network for 2018 beginning with the TV ratings. I am proud to inform you that GMA Network remained to be the number 1 television station in the Philippines for the year 2018. Based on data from Nielsen TV audience measurement, GMA posted an average total day people audience share of 40.8 percent in 2018, compared to ABS-CBN’s 37.5 percent. In addition, we maintained our advantage in our bailiwick areas of urban Luzon and mega manila. In Urban Luzon, we led ABSCBN in average people audience share by 14.4 percent and in mega manila, our lead was 19 percent.
GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE | MAY 2019 ISSUE
As of the first quarter of 2019, we are still on top in nationwide TV ratings. Though our competitor is giving us a good fight, I am confident that we will maintain our leadership in the TV ratings this year. I am also pleased to announce that we are slowly but surely gaining more ground in Visayas and Mindanao by closing the gap in the TV ratings. Our news channel, GMA News TV, is consistently neck and neck with TV-5 for the third spot in the ratings game. Today marks another milestone in our digital journey. As of sign-on this morning, GMA has begun transmitting digital TV using its permanent frequency, UHF channel 15, as assigned by the National Telecommunications Commission. Viewers of analog TV may continue to watch GMA programs on our free-to-air Channel 7 B roadcast.
Financial Performance Despite the industry-wide reduction in advertising spending for the most part of 2018, the significant improvement in our last quarter revenue was able to bridge the gap created earlier in the year. GMA Network posted consolidated revenues of P15.24 billion, down only 2 percent compared to 2017. Our advertising revenues amounted to P13.83 billion, 2 percent lower than the previous year.
Our main channel, GMA-7, posted a 4 percent drop in revenues while GMA News TV was also down 6 percent from the previous year. On the other hand, other revenuegenerating platforms such as radio and regional TV operations brought better results. Radio operations posted an 11 percent increase with the program Dobol B sa News TV providing the largest increase in sales. Regional TV operations likewise posted higher sales by 5 percent versus 2017. Our total operating expenses or OPEX for the full year was at P12.0 billion, down by 0.6 percent compared to 2017. Our EBITDA (earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in 2018 ended at P4.82 billion -- 8 percent lower versus the previous year. GMA Network’s consolidated net income after tax last year was P2.32 billion -- 9 percent lower than our bottom line in 2017.
Other Business Units & Subsidiaries Subsidiaries’ operations and other businesses posted over P1.40 billion in revenues, down 2 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year. Revenues from subscriptions in all three international channels GMA Pinoy
UPDATES 15
Following is the report delivered by GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon during the Annual Stockholders’ Meeting held on May 15, 2019 at the GMA Network Studios.
TV, GMA Life TV, and GMA News TV International remained the same as in 2017 at P1.16 billion. Combined revenues of GMA New Media, including its subsidiaries Digify and Media Merge, posted a 53 percent increase in 2018 brought about by a significant growth in programmatic/ on-line advertising. Other subsidiaries of GMA Network also improved their financial performance in 2018-- Alta productions was up by 23 percent, while Script 2010 was up by 19 percent. Our program syndication business, through GMAWorldwide, registered a 51 percent decrease in sales compared to last year. GMA Records also posted lower sales of 8 percent for 2018. While the network experienced slight declines in revenues in 2018, I am confident that this year will bring better financial results because of electionrelated revenues as well as those from our recurring advertising sales. In fact, our 2019 1st quarter consolidated revenues have reached P3.80 b, 14% higher versus 2018. For 2019, we target to increase our revenues by 12%.
Conclusion Needless to say, GMA network faced some challenges but continued to grow stronger and better. While we look forward to a better financial performance this year, we are also embracing the shift to the digital world and the changes that come with it. As I have said before, we welcome the digital disruption with open arms. We are investing over a billion pesos to complete the second phase of the Network’s digitization project. This covers among others the digital terrestrial transmitters, production and post production investments, and upgrades
in our equipment and facilities to produce world-class programs for our viewers all over the world. Our digital device - which will have features that our competitors do not have - will be finally launched in the second half of this year and will surely bring new viewing experiences to our audience. Lastly, I would like to inform all of you that yesterday, May 14, we paid out cash dividends amounting to 0.45 centavos per share or a total payout of over P2.1 billion pesos, to shareholders of record as of April 22, 2019. Buong puso kaming nagpapasalamat sa lahat ng Kapuso viewers sa buong mundo sa kanilang walang sawang suporta, pagtangkilik, at pagmamahal sa GMA Network.
