In this marvelous month of May, we celebrate motherhood in all forms. To celebrate motherhood is to honor those who have nurtured us. To honor those people is to revere our roots. To revere our roots is to love our country and the natural world. This ethos runs through this month’s magazine. Our fellow Kapuso employees and celebrities honor their mothers by sharing their favorite MOMents— joy rides in Manila, cuddling a granddaughter, or praying for their child. Benjamin Alves shares his road to stardom in Payong Kapuso and talks about his mother, the woman he “owes his love” to. In Kapuso Abroad, we meet Carolyn Fe, fondly called ‘Lola’ as she is seen by the world on Blue’s Clues & You! by Nick Jr. The cover story features our mother Network’s journey in the past year. Through a message from GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, we look back at the Network’s response to the crisis and we look forward to the rest of 2021. We show our respect for Mother Nature with programs that showcase the natural world—Agimat ng Agila and AHA! Our mother country takes the centerstage with the launch of DepEd TV; programs that offer the best to the Filipino—the NCAA and our regional newscasts; and unparalleled community service through the Kapuso Barangayan on Wheels. Motherhood means many things to different people. For us, it’s having a heart filled with love. Dito sa GMA, ito po ay ang maging Buong Puso, Para Sa Pilipino.

who was still figuring out how to navigate the city, walked from Quezon Avenue to GMA because the driver said the place was “diyan lang,” or nearby. She and Susan were accepted as newswriters, joining a radio newsroom that was just starting to deliver more news to the public. JJ started as a news writer but would later be assigned to cover stories on the field because DZBB had very few reporters. This would begin her journalistic career that spans over three decades. Jaileen’s reporting ranged from rallies, fires, crimes, the 1989 coup, the Quezon City Hall and the elliptical offices, the Congress, and the Senate. She left to join other news organizations and headed the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ). She returned to GMA and transitioned to production and management, bringing her on-cam expertise to the other side of the lens. JJ was Executive Producer of
Imbestigador and was concept creator of the historical docudrama series Katipunan, the election advocacy series TODA One I Love, and other weekly programs.

“Bravery is in our DNA. Since 1950, GMA has been a Network known for its relentless pursuit of truth and public service. For the past 70 years, from our beginnings in a small office in Escolta to where we are today, we have not let any crisis keep us from providing credible news and outstanding entertainment shows for the Filipino. And so today, and in the next 70 years, in good times and in challenging times, palagi tayong Buong Puso Para Sa Pilipino.” Atty. Felipe L. Gozon Chairman and CEO GMA Network Inc.
Magandang umaga sa inyong lahat, mga Kapuso! On behalf of the Board of Directors of GMA Network, I welcome all of you to our annual stockholders’ meeting. 2020 was GMA Network’s 70th year in the broadcast industry. And what a memorable year that was. We saw extreme lows and highs but through it all, we found our strength in unity and faith in God. This year, nations are beginning to rebuild communities and economies. But recovery has a long way to go, as we see tragic scenes in countries like India and many businesses still hurting from the downturn. In the face of great crisis, every Kapuso responded with courage and bravery. The Network dedicated superior news coverage that Filipinos relied on more than ever, made long-term investments in the digital space, and pivoted our programs around the most pressing needs of our audience. We rolled out various efforts not only for our employees but also for our frontliners and the public. You may read more about these in the COVID-19 Response section of our annual report. As a result of these efforts, we continued to be the Number 1 television station in all three indicators. Namely—ratings, revenues, and reach. Allow me now to summarize our Network’s remarkable accomplishments in 2020. First, on our ratings performance. GMA Network was the country’s top news and free entertainment source for the year 2020. We reached over 84 million Filipinos across the country and was the most-watched channel with 48.3% people audience shares in Total Philippines.
Based on data from Nielsen TV audience measurement in 2020: • We were already ahead of ABS-CBN in both reach and viewership before the latter went off the air in May. In National Urban Ratings (NUTAM), from January 1 to May 5, we posted people audience shares of 33.8% compared to ABS-CBN’s 30.2%. • From May 6 to December 31, we maintained ratings supremacy at 58.9%, followed by a very distant 7.0% people audience share of TV-5. • We maintained our advantage in our bailiwick areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila. From January 1 to May 5, we led ABS-CBN in people audience shares by 8.3% in Urban Luzon and by 11.4% in Mega Manila. We maintained our ratings leadership in the first quarter of 2021. For NUTAM total day, GMA posted people audience shares of 54%. At the Number 2 spot is GTV (formerly GMA News TV), with people audience shares of 7.4%. With the GTV rebranding last February 22, GTV continued to be at Number 2 in NUTAM channel ranking. Our DTT channel, Heart of Asia, also made it to the Number 5 spot with people audience shares of 4.9%. At the Number 1 spot in the country’s top programs is our romantic comedy series, First Yaya, followed by Kapuso
Mo, Jessica Soho, Encantadia and 24 Oras. Two of our Regional newscasts— GMA Regional TV’s One Mindanao and Balitang Bisdak—were also part of the country’s top 15 news programs. Now, allow me to proceed to our financial performance. It was a stellar year for GMA as we recorded all-time high results across all financial indicators. Consolidated revenues nearly surpassed the P20-billion mark, a 17% hike from 2019, notwithstanding the effects of the pandemic and the absence of three-fourths of a billion worth of non-recurring political advocacies and advertisements from the 2019 midterm national elections. With our prudence in spending and reduced production costs due to community quarantine limitations, consolidated operating expenses (OPEX) contracted by 16% compared with 2019 figures. As a result, consolidated earnings or EBITDA, that is before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization ended 83% higher than that of 2019. The year 2020 was by far, our best year in our 70-year history, as our consolidated net income after tax reached a milestone of a little more than P6 billion, soaring 128% from the 2019 bottom line. COVER Last year, GMA and GTV devoted a combined average of 18 hours daily for various news and public affairs programs. The high ratings of our newscasts and news magazine shows were matched by strong advertising support. As for our Entertainment programs, the limitations on production brought about by the COVID-19 safety protocols led to lock-in tapings and different methods of production. This was seen in the I Can See You series—a new drama anthology which was well-received by the Filipino audience. We were also the first to stage a virtual reality concert, Alden’s Virtual Reality, which gave Kapuso viewers the best entertainment experience at home. Radio operations followed with the next highest airtime sales contribution, capping the year with a 15% increase in its top line. Our flagship AM and FM stations Super Radyo DZBB and Barangay LS 97.1 were both Number 1 in their categories in Mega Manila. GTV posted a 20% increase in sales. Driving its revenue growth were its news programs, which for the greater part of the year aired Dobol B sa News TV. Regional TV’s revenues increased by 46% versus 2019, despite the lack of onground sponsorships due to community quarantine measures. In the digital arena, we registered healthy advertising revenues despite increasing competition. Online advertisements from the Network’s various websites and social media accounts cumulatively grew by 13%. GMA News was the most viewed news media organization in the Philippines on both YouTube and Facebook. At the height of the Luzon lockdown in May, it ranked 5th in the world among news publishers. According to communications and consulting company Blueprint PH, GMA News was the top influencer and media channel source about news on COVID-19.

We are also the first Philippine media organization with two Diamond Creator Awards from YouTube, as GMA Public Affairs reached 10 million subscribers in 2020. We have seen significant rise in user growth for our Network portal, GMANetwork.com, as it ended the year with 41% growth in users and over 2 billion page views. We fortified our digital terrestrial television (DTT) with the launch of our DTT channels Heart of Asia and Hallypop and our high-quality and affordable set-top box, the GMA Affordabox. Despite the pandemic, we sold almost 1 million Affordabox units in only six months last year. We also commercially introduced GMA Now, a dongle for Android smartphones that allows viewers to enjoy digital free-to-air channels on-the-go. Combined incremental revenues from these segments further added to the Network’s top line.
In 2021, we launched two more DTT channels: I Heart Movies and the Dep Ed TV channel. But because of the decline in the global pay TV revenues, coupled with the stronger Peso vs Dollar and the COVID impact on OFW deployment, subscription revenues from International operations dropped by 14%. In response, GMA International increased availability of GMA Pinoy TV on OTT or Over-the-Top, app-based, internet-enabled outlets, and made content available on Video on Demand. Other subsidiary operations also resulted in lower top line this year due to the general economic crunch in most industries and businesses. But these were slightly mitigated by this year’s improvement in syndication revenues abroad which doubled from last year. We continued to receive many awards, the details of which can be accessed in our annual report.
COVER This year, GMA is launching around 100 programs consisting of Network-produced and acquired foreign programs.
leading global entertainment streaming services–iQiyi International–making Kapuso dramas the first Filipino content to be available on the said over- the-top (OTT) platform. Even now, we are already preparing for Eleksyon 2022, another defining moment in our country’s history.
LOVE YOU STRANGER
In 2021, we continued to deliver solid growth. In the first quarter, our total revenues increased by 55%. And even as we aired fresh programs, we have managed to keep our costs at bay, rising only by 5%. EBITDA increased by 163% and net income after tax soared by 246%. LOOKING FORWARD Looking forward to the rest of 2021, we will continue to invest in long-term, sustainable value creation. Proof of this is our capital allocation for the next three years. We earmarked more than P20 billion for our capital expenditures (CAPEX) and content cost for 2021 to 2023. This includes cost for the construction of a new building and state-of-the-art studios inside our complex; content production and post-production; and the continuing expansion of our DTT reach and various projects in the regions to further strengthen our presence nationwide.
And while we think of the long-term, we also keep an eye on what is urgent— protecting our people from COVID-19. We are providing free COVID-19 vaccines for our regular and probationary employees, project employees, and exclusive talents on a voluntary basis. Recently, we purchased doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines for the Network’s vaccination program. Para sa atin sa GMA, ang kaligtasan ng bawat Kapuso at bawat Pilipino ay bahagi ng ating Serbisyong Totoo.
We will continue to be focused on providing meaningful and superior content. This year, we are launching around 100 programs consisting of Network-produced and acquired foreign programs. Foremost among them are the breakthrough cultural drama series Legal Wives and the TV adaptation of the 1988 award-winning film Nagbabagang Luha. In addition, our Public Affairs group will be producing shorter run dramatic series for a younger viewership. New, young teams of creatives have been set up to produce these short series, which include romance mystery Love You Stranger and action-adventure Lolong. On the digital front, we continue to bolster our content. We launched our new DTT channel, I Heart Movies and will soon be broadcasting games from the Philippines’ oldest basketball collegiate league, the NCAA. We sealed a multi-year partnership with one of the

apuso actor Benjamin Alves stands as one of his home network’s most prized talents. We have seen him lead in teleserye projects, star in critically-acclaimed films, and even helm GMA’s prestigious CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program: the GMA Network Excellence Award or GNEA. Success, however, didn’t come easy for him. Throughout his career, Benjamin or Ben has had his fair share of rejection, self-doubt, and humbling moments that shaped him into the person he is now. Born on March 31, 1989, Ben spent a good part of his youth in the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite, where his dad’s family is from. When talking about his earliest memories, Ben cited an instance from his childhood; one that may have prophesied his future career as an actor.
“I think I was maybe three or four, naaalala ko ’to my dad brought home a video cam. Sobrang laki pa nung time na ’yon. I don’t know who has a copy of that but when we watched the old videos, lagi akong may cameo.” In his second year of grade school, Ben migrated to Guam with his family where his father worked. It was in Guam Ben’s world truly changed. The small luxuries he enjoyed back in the Philippines such as his family home where he had his own room or his grandparents who lived nearby, were nowhere to be found. He had to share a room with his brother and sister, spending nights on his futon, isolated from his relatives in a completely foreign country. “You don’t understand these things when you’re young. You only realize it now. At first, ayoko talaga, nasanay na nandito eh, masaya naman ’yung buhay. I
There are so many ways to turn things around, just stay focused. had that angst na gusto kong umuwi dito, mas komportable ako dito.” During one of their many visits to the Philippines, Ben finally got his much needed push to start his showbiz journey when he met his Kuya PJ for the first time. Kuya PJ, of course, being one of the most sought-after actors in the country and Ben’s uncle, is Piolo Pascual.

Even when it’s hard, even when things look dark, just enjoy it. You don’t know where life will take you, you really don’t. You just have to take it one day at a time and be grateful.
“He’s always been somebody I could rely on, he’s like a big brother to me, still is to this day.” Instead of preparing for college like his peers, Ben went straight to work after high school to fund his showbiz plans in the Philippines. Then in 2006, he entered the industry under the screen name “Vince Saldaña,” joined a reality model-search competition, and appeared in various other projects. “I tried showbiz back in ’06 to ’09, nakapasok sa ilang movies, ilang shows pero wala ’yung traction na gusto ko. You really start to question kung anong mangyayari sa ’yo. I didn’t want to end up not having a plan B. Wala namang nangyayari so I really had to be honest with myself.”
Plan B In 2009, Ben decided to sell everything, move back to Guam, and pursue his studies; he was pretty sure that he was never coming back. On his last day in the country, he had a chance encounter with Jonas Gaffud, renowned “beauty queen maker” and co-founder of the agency Mercator Artist and Model Management, at a dinner. Ben remembers Jonas telling him that he had potential and a place in the industry.

start of every semester, he would borrow money from his mom for his books and then slowly pay her back. “My Christmases, my summers, dirediretso ’yung school ko. I didn’t have time to be depressed. I was in school from like 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and I had to go to work from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. tapos between those times, I tried to study. Usually, a course load at our school was four. I was taking six or seven kung puwede.”
His mind was set, though.
“Wala akong pera the whole time I was in college, I don’t know how I survived that time. I was really resourceful when I needed to be.”
The next few years of his life postshowbiz in Guam were the hardest. He took up English Literature in the University of Guam while working at a warehouse where he operated heavy machinery and handled paperwork.
Ben admits that at the time he couldn’t bring himself to watch any Filipino shows on television as he couldn’t bear to see his showbiz contemporaries advance in their careers while he had chosen to turn his back on the limelight.
Despite the work, Ben had to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA (grade point average) in order for him to enjoy a full scholarship. Ben knew it was the only way he could afford his college education. At the

of time in case there was still a chance for him to stage a comeback. Even when he was certain that there was no way he could, there was a little spark of hope that remained alive in his heart. This little spark of hope became a reality when a big opportunity came before his last semester in college. Ben flew back to the Philippines by the end of 2011 to attend his brother’s wedding. While in Manila, he met up with Jonas once more. Through Jonas’s connections, Ben was introduced to the higher-ups from GMA, like Annette Gozon-Valdes, Lilybeth Rasonable, Joey Abacan, and Tracy Garcia. “They were in a really good mood that day, it really was timing. They offered me work but I told them that I wanted to finish college first, I had one more semester and they said, ‘Yes.’ “Ever since then, I’ve been with GMA and I don’t see myself going anywhere else. They took a chance on me when I didn’t even know I could do it…They’re the ones who pushed me, they had more
confidence in me than I did. Thankfully, I’m still very blessed, still around.” Despite the many stellar projects under his belt, there’s no stopping Ben any time soon. “Anybody can enter showbiz, I really do believe that. Especially now, you could pave your own way to enter the mainstream or the public eye. They should be welcomed. At some point, I was new then, that’s the cycle. “Pero the trick is how to stay, what do you contribute to make yourself stay? For the younger people, what are you contributing to them?” Ben is fully aware that he owes part of his success to the people who helped him (and maybe pulled some strings for him) during the early years of his career.
“It’s really nice our Network takes education very seriously, especially GNEA which is an initiative coming straight from Atty. Felipe Gozon,” he says, referring to the chairman and CEO of GMA Network Inc. Ben feels privileged to take the post that fellow Kapuso actor Dingdong Dantes once held. “Coming from the previous ambassador na si Kuya Dingdong Dantes, ang laking karangalan noon. Again, it’s been nice to be the ambassador for the last four years but for me, I’m more excited moving forward. “Ever since then, I’ve been with GMA and I don’t see myself going anywhere else. They took a chance on me when I didn’t even know I could do it.”
“Someone helped me along the way, my uncle being one of them, I find it so much more important that you’re able to do that to the people who are coming in. ’Di tulad ng iba parang ‘Bahala kayo diyan. Senior na ako so kayo na bahala.’ “
Looking back, Ben couldn’t believe how well things have turned out for him. No matter how many times he got knocked down, no matter how dire his situation, he managed to keep this flame inside of him burning which lit the path toward achieving his dreams.
GMA Network Excellence (GNEA) Ambassador
“Even when it’s hard, even when things look dark, just enjoy it. You don’t know where life will take you, you really don’t. You just have to take it one day at a time and be grateful.”
As a Kapuso, one of Ben’s biggest responsibilities is his being an ambassador for the GNEA, GMA’s CSR program that aims to honor graduating students for their excellence in leadership, academic performance, and social responsibility. Ben has held on to this prestigious position for four years straight and has helped shape the program into what it is today.

ITANONG MO KAY DOK! COVID-19 VACCINE FAQS S O U R C E : D E P A R T M E N T O F H E A LT H
1. WHY VACCINATE? WHY RESBAKUNA? The COVID-19 pandemic has taken many lives, and continues to put many at risk. It has also disrupted the economy, leaving many Filipinos jobless or underemployed. With the availability of COVID-19 vaccines which can (1) prevent symptomatic infection and possibly (2) prevent severe infection and (3) prevent transmission, we have the opportunity to get ahead of the virus. However, like many vaccines being used in the past decades, the protective effect on our community is maximized only when at least 70% of the population get vaccinated. For example, if your barangay has 100,000 people, at least 70,000 should be vaccinated to ensure protection of the community.

MAY 2021 ISSUE
So remember, this is not just about getting you or your family vaccinated, this is about getting your barangay, city, province up for it.
2. SO WHICH VACCINES WILL WE USE IN THE COUNTRY? There is currently a limited supply of vaccines all over the world. In fact, 80% of global stocks have been bought by high income countries already. Because no single company can provide for vaccines for 110 million of us, the government is in talks with 7 manufacturers. But rest assured that only vaccines that have received Philippine FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization or EUA will be bought and used. The EUA provides the assurance that it has been thoroughly evaluated and recommended by our various independent expert panels.
Also, please do not worry, COVID-19 vaccines cannot make you sick with COVID-19.
3. WHO GETS THE VACCINE FIRST? Because we need to ensure that our health system will be able to continuously care for all of us, medical frontliners will be the first to receive the vaccines. This is to be followed by eligible senior citizens who are at greatest risk of severe infection or deaths. We know from our local data that COVID-19 is more dangerous for the elderly. The sequence of who will be prioritized have been determined with the help of our experts.
USAPANG COVID
4. WHAT TO DO BEFORE GETTING VACCINATED? While we wait for the vaccines to arrive, make sure you obtain accurate information only from the right sources. Ask only licensed medical professionals so that you are correctly advised regarding COVID-19 vaccination. Verify things you may have read or heard. It is only when you are armed with the right information can you rightfully decide yourself if you will be vaccinated. Your health history will be crucial in determining whether you should get vaccinated or what vaccines are appropriate for you. It is therefore important that you take the health screening seriously. Show up on the day of your screening and declare your complete medical history (e.g. allergies, risky behavior). The health care professional will only be able to assess you correctly if you provide the correct information. If you did not undergo screening, you will not be booked or scheduled for vaccination.
5. WHAT TO DO ON THE DAY OF VACCINATION? a. Go to your assigned vaccination site on time - of course wearing your mask and face shield. b. Before getting your shot, you will sign an informed consent form signifying your willingness to be vaccinated and that you are aware of the benefits and risks of the vaccine. Follow the minimum health protocols in your vaccination site to keep everyone safe (e.g. physical distancing appropriately).
c. Immediately after being vaccinated, you will receive your vaccination card and you will be asked to stay in the facility for 1 hour before you can go home. This is to allow your health care providers to monitor if you will experience any unusual symptoms, or what we call adverse events. Because we take safety seriously, monitoring will continue for until 12 months after you get your shot.
6. WHAT TO DO AFTER VACCINATION? ADVERSE EVENTS a. You may experience some side effects, similar to having the flu but this should go away in a few days. Don’t worry, this is a normal sign that your body is building protection. In most cases, discomfort from fever or pain is normal but do contact your health care provider if the redness or tenderness where you got the shot increases after 24 hours or if your side effects are worrying you or do not seem to be going away after a few days. It is important that you report to the health authorities so experts can study whether the adverse event was indeed a result of vaccination or a mere coincidence. We don’t want to worry the public unnecessarily. b. Also, with most COVID-19 vaccines, you will need 2 shots in order for you to get the promised protection.
7. HOW TO CONTINUOUSLY PROTECT ME & MY FAMILY? Since it takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination, you are only protected until a week or two after your second shot. Even then, vaccines are just one of the many tools for us to stop the pandemic. We all need to continue wearing masks, staying at least 1 meter away from others, avoiding crowds, and washing hands often to protect yourself and your family.
8. AUTHENTICITY & COLD CHAIN Finally, know that only COVID-19 vaccines certified to be authentic and are transported under strict cold chain conditions are able to provide full protection for those who are vaccinated. Vaccines are biological products and are sensitive. Counterfeit vaccines can jeopardize your health and safety; so can vaccines that have been transported in temperatures that are too hot or too cold. So make sure you get your vaccines from trusted and legitimate sources who can assure you that the vaccines are produced by the real manufacturers and that it is kept at the right temperature all the way from the manufacturing plant to your arms.
Get the second shot even if you have side effects after the first shot, unless your healthcare provider tells you not to get a second shot.

MA Regional TV (RTV) remains committed to providing unparalleled community service to Filipinos in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao via its Kapuso Barangayan on Wheels (KBOW), which to date, has benefitted 11,850 families. KBOW was launched in May 2020 as a mobile version of GMA RTV’s Kapuso Barangayan, which was originally a community activity held in different barangays across the regions. With the community quarantine, GMA RTV introduced KBOW to reach more communities and directly provide residents the assistance they urgently need. The areas covered include North Central Luzon, South Luzon, Central and Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Southern Mindanao. “It has been almost a year since we transformed our Kapuso Barangayan into a mobile activity to benefit our fellow Filipinos during this pandemic,” said GMA Regional TV and Synergy First Vice President and Head Oliver Victor Amoroso. “No one has been spared and many families are still struggling to cope—most especially our Kapuso in the regions who have lost their sources of income during the pandemic. Nananatiling kasama po ninyo ang GMA Regional TV. We thank our partners in the local government and private sectors for joining us in this regional initiative. We are now on our fourth leg and we will continue to work hand in hand with the government and private sectors as we face these difficult times because of the COVID pandemic,” he added. Just recently, KBOW won an Excellence Award in Communication Management under the Corporate Social Responsibility Division 1 category at the 18th Philippine Quill Awards. The Philippine Quill is considered one of the country’s most prestigious awards programs in the field of business communications. It also received a Special Citation merit at the 42nd Catholic Mass Media Awards in the Best TV Ad-Public Service category.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bicolandia co-anchor and correspondent Rhayne Palino prepares food packs for Kapuso Barangayan on Wheels beneficiaries in Bicol.
GMA RTV has already rolled out three legs of the said regional initiative. The first wave was held from May to August in 2020 with a total of 2,610 family beneficiaries. This was followed by the second KBOW which saw 4,200 families gaining assistance from August to December. From December 2020 to March 2021, a total of 5,040 families were served by KBOW. The fourth leg is set to be conducted this April. In North Central Luzon, 2,120 families benefited from the KBOW during the first three legs that were rolled out. One of the recipients is Sonia Delfin, a sidewalk buko vendor who was affected by community quarantine caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. She is grateful that GMA RTV reached her barangay. Meanwhile, during its first KBOW in the Bicol region, GMA RTV has already reached 840 families. In Barangay Pipian in San Fernando, Camarines Sur, the team met 26-year-old Cyril Flores. The wife of a farmer and mother of three kids said that the KBOW was very timely for they are having a hard time trying to make ends meet during this pandemic. In Central Eastern Visayas, a total of 2,450 families were assisted. One of them is 65-year-old Juanito Perez of Brgy. Inayawan in Cebu City. Perez has been providing for his family as a waste picker at the Inayawan dumpsite. Another recipient is Gloria Jumalon of Brgy. Ibo in Lapu-Lapu City. The 72-year-old woman lives in a small house while taking care of her 22-year-old grandchild with Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
On the other hand, GMA RTV was able to assist 2,620 families in Western Visayas during the three legs of KBOW. Here the team met 28-year-old Ronald Hollera and 65-year-old Nelly Piagola. Hollera, who hails from Brgy. Trapiche in Oton, Iloilo, has been paralyzed after being hit by a motorcycle last 2015. Nanay Nelly, on the other hand, is from Brgy. Bito-on in Jaro, Iloilo City. She is taking care of her 16-year-old granddaughter who was diagnosed with bone cancer. In Northern Mindanao, a total of 1,680 families were the recipients of food packs and grocery items. One of them is the family of 49-year-old Castor Aranjuez of Barangay Canitoan, Cagayan De Oro City. Aranjuez, despite being an amputee, continues to practice his craft of welding metal to produce plant stands, dog cages, and the likes—his way to make ends meet and sustain his family. In Southern Mindanao, GMA RTV was able to serve 2,140 families, including Merlita Lausa of Brgy. Kinawitnon, Island Garden City of Samal. The 51-year-old widow has been supporting her five children by offering laundry and mowing services. On top of distributing essential items to thousands of families across the country, GMA RTV led various brief and relevant lectures on proper health and safety protocols. To further instill hope in the hearts of the beneficiaries, each pack of KBOW items included notes with messages of encouragement from the anchors and hosts of GMA RTV’s newscasts and morning programs. Whether on-air, online, and through public relations and partnerships, the “One in Heart with Pinoys abroad vs. COVID-19” campaign launched a slew of tactics to spread awareness on the pandemic and honor the selfless contributions of Filipino frontliners all over the world. The integrated campaign generated on-air and online content such as ‘Stories from the Frontlines,’ ‘Stories of Survival,’ ‘In Memoriam,’ and ‘Tribute to Frontliners’. There were also
information drives, advisories, tribute e-mails, an online fund-raising event to support Filipino nurses, and free entertainment to audiences abroad to help alleviate stress brought about by the pandemic.
BECOMING PINOY: CAROLYN FE Meanwhile, the multi-awarded GMA Pinoy TV original series Becoming Pinoy gained another recognition for its episode featuring Filipino-Canadian actress Carolyn Fe of Blue’s Clues & You! Becoming Pinoy profiles successful and influential personalities of Filipino descent where they share their stories of coming to terms with their uniqueness and overcoming hurdles which can be a source of inspiration to other Filipinos of mixed culture and ancestry. The winning episode is about Carolyn Fe, who defied cultural barriers as she pursued what her heart truly desires. She is a Filipino actress in Canada who landed major roles in different arts—dance, music, theater, and now

TV acting. In her early days in the industry, she realized that she had to do something to stand up for diversity when she was compelled to adjust her physical appearance in performances in order to blend in. This prodded Carolyn to establish an employment agency with multi-racial personnel ready to be deployed in different companies just to push diversity and inclusion. She accepted roles on TV and film based on her ethnicity and received numerous acting awards for them. Carolyn is now fondly called ‘Lola’ as she is seen by the world on Blue’s Clues & You! by Nick Jr. promoting Filipino culture both on TV and on social media. “It’s only been in the past 10 years that we’re seeing and recognizing more and more Filipinos up front and center. Game changing shows like Nickelodeon’s ‘Blue’s Clues & You!’ and GMA Pinoy TV’s ‘Becoming Pinoy’ make this happen. When I viewed the episodes of Becoming Pinoy, it was
clear that the show was a platform for Filipinos to be seen and heard by cultures other than my own. What an honor it is to have been interviewed by the team. A heart-felt congratulations to all at GMA Pinoy TV and the Becoming Pinoy show. Sige na! Tuloy na tayo, marami pa tayong gagawin!,” Carolyn urged her fellow Filipinos. GMA Pinoy TV joins a stellar roster of agencies from around the world that have been lauded by the Communicator Awards. Some of the notable organizations include Univision, Tencent TIMI Audio Center, Google (for Accenture), Museum of the City of NY, State of Arizona, HCL, NFL, American Bankers Association, PwC, Comcast Advertising, IBM, and HK Trade Development Council. Widely recognized as one of the largest awards of its kind in the world, the Communicator Awards is the leading international creative awards
program honoring creative excellence for communication professionals. It is organized by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts, the 27th Annual Communicator Awards received over 5,000 entries from ad agencies, interactive agencies, production firms, in-house creative professionals, graphic designers, design firms, and public relations firms.
