FELIPE S. YALONG IS I N G - F I N E X
CFO of the Year GMA Network Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Felipe S. Yalong is the ING-FINEX CFO of the Year for 2013. The highly coveted award recognizes exemplary leadership in the field of finance and is bestowed annually on the country’s foremost financial executive. In his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony on November 20, Yalong extended his sincerest gratitude to ING-FINEX saying that the award becomes all the more meaningful “because it comes from [his] peers, [his] fellow CFOs, and from an esteemed professional organization that is FINEX.” He also thanked GMA’s top management for giving him “a significant amount of trust and confidence since [his] early years in GMA.”
“Philip’s [Yalong] integrity and needless to say, his competence as a CFO are beyond question. GMA is truly fortunate to have him and we thank ING FINEX for giving him this honor,” GMA’s Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon enthused.
According to Victor P. dela Dingco, Jr., Founding Chairman of the INGFINEX CFO of the Year search, and currently the Executive Vice President and Liaison Director of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX), choosing the winner proves to be more challenging every year, “Shining the spotlight on those who raise the bar for going beyond the numbers gets tougher every year for the Search for the ING-FINEX CFO of the Year. After all, it’s not an easy task to select one exemplary CFO for his professional excellence, leadership, stewardship and integrity, especially in a country teeming with professional talent.”

GMA Network Earns P9.752 Billion Revenues in 9 Months
Maintains strong revenues across major platforms
Meanwhile, GMA International, the business unit managing the distribution and operations of the Network’s overseas channels, improved its revenues from licensing and advertising by 3 percent in Peso terms.
(L-R) President and COO Gilberto R Duavit, Jr., Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon and EVP and CFO Felipe S. Yalong
GMA Network reported consolidated revenues of P9.752 billion for the first nine months of 2013, up 4 percent from last year. Airtime sales reached P8.866 billion, surpassing last year’s performance by 5 percent due to improved advertising sales across major revenue platforms. Operating expenses grew 7 percent to P7.601 billion because of the increase in production costs and compounded by non-recurring election-related expenses recorded earlier this year. General and administrative expenses, on the other hand, were flat in between periods. Thus, GMA ended the nine-month period with an EBITDA (earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and

Geoff Eigenmann: “It’s Good to Be Back!” by: Kristin EJ Armonio, Social Media Specialist After a short hiatus from the spotlight, Kapuso actor Geoff Eigenmann is back on primetime as one of the lead stars of Adarna. “Sabik na sabik na rin ako to get back to what I’m doing kasi I’ve been gone for quite a while on vacation. So, I’ve been looking forward to this. I’ve been wanting to work for the longest time already. So, it’s good to be back!,” Geoff said. “I’m very excited. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang magiging reaction ng mga tao. But so far, so good!,” he added. Adarna is also Geoff’s first team-up with Kapuso actress, Kylie Padilla. “Well, I met her before pa sa GMA pa lang. Acquaintance lang, basically hi-hello lang. We actually go to the same gym. Doon, we started talking then she mentioned she was going to do Adarna nga daw. Then eventually, I told her na magiging part ako ng show. Ayun, masaya,” Geoff replied. So how’s his working relationship with her so far?
“We’ve had several tapings together and okay naman kami. I think the chemistry is there, which is always a good thing. So, let’s see. Let’s see what happens,” he shared. Geoff revealed that his role in Adarna is very different from the characters he portrayed in his past projects. “I play the character of Migo Salva who’s supposed to be a celebrity athlete. I’ve never really played an athlete before. It’s a totally different world except for the celebrity part. Pero, I’m adjusting to it and in some ways, pareho siya eh. It’s just the ‘athletic’ part that I’m worried about. But, okay lang naman ‘yun.” “Preparations for the role? Nothing specific talaga. I’ve just been reading the script over and over since I got it. Kasi yung buhay ni Migo has a lot of drama in it so yun yung preparation ko,” Geoff added. The Kapuso leading man also proudly shared how he achieved his toned physique by living a healthier lifestyle. “I started going to the gym. I’ve been hitting the gym for the past 3 months almost everyday. I lost 40 pounds and still losing. More on physical preparations talaga ako.”

SPECIAL
Q&A with GMA Bacolod’s
GRETCHEN VARELA & KATHERINE VALENCIA Kapuso Magazine (KM) chats with Isyu Subong Negrense’s anchors.
KATHERINE VALENCIA
GRETCHEN VARELA
KAPUSO MAGAZINE (KM): What sets ISYU SUBONG NEGRENSE apart from other local news programs in Bacolod?
KM: What memorable issues/coverage have been aired by Isyu Subong Negrense this year?
KATHERINE VALENCIA (KV): ISYU SUBONG NEGRENSE is different from other local news programs in Bacolod because it caters to the needs of the general public, not just in terms of the information and news that they need to know about the society, but as well as true stories. It has different feature segments which make people become more interested in different areas such as the arts, business, health and more. It does not just stick to an angle but digs deeper to the main source of the news or situation. It also makes sure that all angles and sides are taken for it to be an effective source of news and information without being biased. It neutralizes, it is fair and it is just.
KV: I consider the elections and super typhoon Yolanda as the most memorable news or stories that I’ve made this year.
GRETCHEN VARELA (GV): When Isyu Subong Negrense was launched 3 years ago, the format of the program featured in-depth stories around the province. People appreciated that and I personally learned a lot about the people and the places around Negros. Watching the episodes, one could tell that the reporters had the heart and the passion for the work that they do.
GV: For me, the most memorable coverage this year is the one that I produced about GMA Bacolod’s relief operations in Cadiz City after the Super Typhoon Yolanda. I don’t normally produce stories and this is the only story that I did this year because I only host the show. But when I was told about the assignment, I wholeheartedly accepted it because I wanted to experience what the victims went through and tell the story myself. I watched the thorough coverage of Tacloban, Leyte and Samar and I wanted to do my part in telling people about the untold stories of other affected areas that didn’t get much media attention. I felt that it was important for people to know about their situation too with the hope that through my story, people will be inspired to help them as well. KM: Please describe yourself off cam.
Today, as the show is slowly transitioning into news and the stories have become more concise, what remains is the heart that the producers put into each story. I am proud to belong to a team that upholds excellence and competes with no one but ourselves. We try hone ourselves and become even better each time.
KV: Off cam, I am adventurous. I love to travel, love to walk, I love the beach and I enjoy water sports. I smile and laugh a lot. I love to sing. My day is not complete without listening to music. I also play the piano and guitar. I also express my thoughts and feelings through painting and drawing. I write a lot and have boxes of written journals from college days up to now. I prefer no make-up and I wear shorts, shirt and sneakers or even slippers when I’m not on duty.
KM: What are the most challenging parts of your job as the face of the program and why?
GV: I am an optimistic but private person, who is God-fearing and very family oriented. I am passionate about the work I do in teaching preschool kids.
KV: Because I started out as among the faces of the program at a very young age, I consider maintaining credibility and the people’s trust as the most challenging part of this craft. When it comes to news, a lot of consideration has to be considered, especially if you have a variety of viewers who watch and check every action or move that you make. Avoiding mistakes was very critical during the first years of the program. GV: Sometimes we encounter viewers who do not agree with the stories that we produce and being the face of the program, we get the blame and the complaints. We try our best to be very impartial and to always show all sides of the story, but still, we cannot please everybody.
KM: What would you tell aspiring journalists in Bacolod who dream of becoming like you someday? KV: Love your craft, because if you do, the rest will follow. GV: I would tell them to just keep on practicing and to keep on producing stories, while continuously reinventing themselves. But I think what really makes a great journalist is one who truly has the heart to serve the people by going out and finding great stories to tell. When a journalist has the passion for the job, the viewers can see that which earns them your trust. Just as in any profession, what’s important is loving the work that you do and putting your
heart into it that will make you great.
