GMA Network, First Broadcast
Company to Stand Up for Integrity When the movement Integrity Initiative was launched in 2011, GMA Network was among the first companies to step up to the plate and swing against corruption in society. GMA Network’s Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon is glad that GMA is the first broadcast media company to join the initiative. “GMA Network joined the Integrity Initiative because we saw that the goals of this movement are aligned with our own corporate values. As I always say, synergy is important for an organization to succeed. Joining the business sector’s collective action to curb corruption is one way for GMA to manifest our corporate responsibility. And perhaps, if we act as one, then we can finally be rid or substantially reduce the incidence of this terrible ill from our society,” Gozon says.
and the slogan “Walang Kinikilingan, Walang Pinoprotektahan, Walang Kasinungalingan, Serbisyong Totoo Lamang”. GMA Network created an Ethics and Editorial Manual specifically for its News and Public Affairs personnel to remain true to the highest standards of professionalism and to the strictest ethical requirements of broadcasting. “GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs is recognized by various local and international award giving bodies and organizations as the most credible broadcast news organization in the country today. Joining the Integrity Initiative helped us strengthen this status and also enhanced the public’s awareness that GMA strictly adheres to ethical business practices, good corporate governance and upholds integrity and transparency within our organization,” Gozon says.
“We fully adopted the Unified Code of Conduct for Business of the Integrity Initiative. We took the Online Integrity Self-Assessment in September 2012 and participated in the Pilot Validation of Integrity Self-Assessment Results in July 2013.”
akong dinidinig... lagi akong tinatanong kung anong gusto ko at lagi akong kasali sa pagbuo ng isang show and I appreciate that,” Regine said. “As an artist siyempre you want to be heard also and you want that to be a reality and I’m glad that they’re very much willing to not only listen to my ideas but also to partner with me and develop what’s in my head,” she added. Regine currently hosts the weekend cooking show Sarap Diva and is also part of Sunday All Stars.
employees of the Company, including the President and the CEO,” Gozon says. Gozon adds that the likes of GMA News and Public Affairs pillars Mike Enriquez, Jessica Soho and Mel Tiangco are highly respected broadcasters. And just recently, senior reporter Jiggy Manicad and Malu Mangahas have been cited as Journalists of the Year by Metrobank Foundation. As GMA Network joined hands with other companies in fighting corruption and promoting transparency and good governance in the country, Gozon encourages other companies to likewise join the cause. “Joining the Integrity Initiative promotes clean and honest business. You will not only help your business, but you will also help our country,” Gozon says.
Atty. Felipe L. Gozon
Among GMA’s core values states, “We uphold integrity and transparency.” Thus, the Company implements internal policies that ensure transparency and prevents corrupt practices including prohibiting of solicitation and regulation of acceptance of gifts or favors, avoiding conflict of interest, proper accreditation of suppliers, etc.
GMA Network obtained an “Advanced” rating in both the Self-Assessment and Pilot Validation. One of the better known best integrity practices employed by the Network is the strict observance and/or compliance with its News and Public Affairs’ (N&PA) tagline “Serbisyong Totoo”
“We do our best to avoid anything that would affect the viewing public’s perception on the integrity and credibility of the Network. Our policies cover all

Q&A with GMA Cebu’s
BOBBY NALZARO Kapuso Magazine (KM) chats with GMA Cebu’s very own Bobby Nalzaro.
KM: Balitang Bisdak is a household brand in Cebu when it comes to newscasts. How did the program accomplish that? Bobby Nalzaro (BN): Like basketball, presenting a television news program is a team effort. Even if you have good anchors, if the reporters and the news presentation are lousy, the program will not click. Television is a “cruel medium.” As an anchor of Balitang Bisdak for the past 14 years, I am merely giving “justice” on air to the inputs and efforts of our reporters. They are the “real stars” of the success of Balitang Bisdak. Yes, people do recognize me as Bisdak anchor as I am considered the “face” of this Cebuano program. But viewers patronize the newscast because of the content and how the news are being presented. The way I and my co-anchor, Atty. Rose Versoza, deliver the news also contributes a little to the success of the newscast, making it acceptable to the Cebuano viewers. KM: Being one of the most recognized news personalities in the region, how do you keep up with the viewers’ expectations? What are the most challenging parts of your job and why? BN: Modesty aside, I am a tri-media personality. I handle the morning primetime commentary program over DYSS Super Radyo Cebu (GMA’s AM station) and I also write columns for Sunstar Cebu and Sunstar Superbalita (Cebuano tabloid). Handling such live broadcast programs (both on TV and radio) is not an easy task. One has to be prepared. Radio is more of a personality-driven program. I have my own set of listeners and maybe some of them also follow me on Balitang Bisdak. People follow my radio program maybe because of the way I present my commentaries. Being a solo anchor on radio gives me control of time and issues to be discussed. But on television, it’s a different ball game. Again, it’s a team effort and it’s all “de cajon” because of the time element. But again, viewers like Balitang Bisdak
because of its content and not because of Bobby Nalzaro. The most challenging part of my job being a television news anchor is how to present the news. It’s a day-to-day challenge. KM: What memorable issues/coverage have been aired by Balitang Bisdak this year? BN: I can no longer recall. There were so many but one of those coverage was the May 2013 mid-term elections and the sea tradegy involving MV St. Thomas Aquinas, where hundreds of passengers perished. Aside from the usual political issues and the human drama (crime and violence) we offer our viewers, sometimes we come up with special features on the lives of ordinary people specially the underprivileged sector in our society. One of our feature stories was adjudged the best television feature story by the Globe Media Excellence Awards wherein our reporter, Alan Domingo, also won as the best television reporter. KM: Who is Bobby Nalzaro off cam?
KM: What would you tell aspiring journalists in Cebu who dream of becoming a Bobby Nalzaro someday?
BN: I am not supposed to answer this question because it would appear self-serving. But just a brief answer. The life of Bobby Nalzaro off cam is very simple and ordinary. I am everybody’s friend specially the ordinary people but an enemy to corrupt and abusive politicians and government officials. If assured of my safety, I can mingle with anybody and anywhere without hyprocrisy and pretention. Despite my success in this profession, the culture and attitude of being a “promdi” (from the province) is still within me. I was born and grew up in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte to farmer parents. “Feet should always stay on the ground,” as the saying goes.
BN: I remember what my Mass Communication professor at the Ateneo de Zamboanga told our class: “In this profession, it should be kapalan ng mukha, tigasan ng dibdid at tibayan ng sikmura.” “Kapalan ng mukha” in the sense that sometimes you are being confronted and insulted by people who had been subjected to your adverse commentaries. “Tigasan ng dibdib” in the sense that sometimes you will be threatened with physical harm and legal suits by people who don’t like your commentaries. Worse, you can get killed. And “tibayan ng sikmura” because sometimes, literally, you will miss your meals in pursuit of news. These are just the so-called “hazards” of our profession. If you cannot take it, then better look for another endeavor. But if you have the “passion” for it, then go.

SIDE STORY Rhian Ramos in a Different Kind of Competition by Neil Celeste T. Rara, GMA Social Media GMANetwork.com chanced upon actress Rhian Ramos during the press conference of Genesis. The actress shared how happy she is to be a part of the series, which began production barely a few months after her previous series “Indio” aired its grand finale. “Every one on the set of ‘Genesis’ does his job really well. Every one is helping each other. ‘Pag nasa eksena ka, you feel that you are in a team,” said Rhian. Apart from working on the series, Rhian also participated in a motor sports/car racing event held recently at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga. The race was organized by a popular automobile manufacturer. Aside from Rhian, kapuso hunk actor Aljur Abrenica also joined the competition. Rhian said she was drafted from around thirty celebrities who were given several tasks to complete during a press event. The final celebrity racers were selected by the organizers based on how they performed the tasks.
To prepare for the race, Rhian and Aljur enrolled in a fiveweek course at a popular racing school. All racers were required by the organizer to undergo at least five weeks of intensive training. It was the first time for both Rhian and Aljur to join a car race although Rhian said that Aljur has tried motor races in the past. Although the actress’ boyfriend KC Montero is not so much into cars, Rhian divulged that she has influenced him to like motor sports. Meanwhile, in “Genesis,” the actress portrays a physically abused wife who will eventually be saved by a long lost love – Isaac (Dingdong Dantes) – who is the real father of her child.
