Very welcome siya sa GMA,” Gozon said. Duavit, on the other hand, said Lorna is extremely talented and very professional. “Tayo ay

I-Witness brings home 2012 UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award

Following is an excerpt from the letter sent by the Office of the Governor of Pampanga to GMA News and Public Affairs:

(L-R) I-Witness Executive Producer Stephen Patricio, Writer and Host Kara David, Director Sunshine Matutina and Cameraman Disney Carreon

October 3, 2012 “The information and advisories you disseminated to the public at the height of the monsoon rains and consequent flooding in the province last month were certainly very helpful. The important role you played in bringing reliable and accurate information to our homes to prevent fear and panic was something that we, in the provincial government, sincerely appreciate. Thank you very much.”

After taking home the Outstanding Televised Feature Story on Youth and Education Award in the 9th Lasallian Scholarum Awards, Kara David’s “Alkansya” from the GMA News and Public Affairs’ flagship documentary program, I-Witness, now brings home yet another citation—this time, the esteemed 2012 United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award. Receiving the award during the ceremony in Seoul, Korea on October 16 was I-Witness host and “Alkansya” documentarist, Kara David. “It is a great honor for us to win the UNICEF Child Rights Awards. Children’s rights have always been our advocacy here in I-Witness and to be recognized by the foremost institution focused on the promotion of children’s rights, an international institution like UNICEF is a big honor. Somehow, it gives us an affirmation that we’re on the right track,” David said. “And I’m happy to say that after the airing of ‘Alkansiya,’ the boy Anthony is now back in school. He is now a scholar and is a child laborer no more.” In 2001 and 2008 respectively, GMA News and Public Affairs also brought

4

home the prestigious Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award with its “Angels in Prison” (2001) and another I-Witness documentary, “Child Beasts of Burden (2008). The UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award was created by Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA), Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and UNICEF in 2001. It aims to recognize the efforts of broadcasters in pursuing both the production of good quality children’s programming and better coverage of children’s issues. It is given annually to the best television program produced in the Asia-Pacific region focusing on children’s rights.

Edge Remains unrivaled in the afternoon block across all areas

GMA Network prevailed over rival stations in nationwide TV ratings in September, according to the industry’s more trusted ratings provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Based on full September data (September 23 to 30 based on overnight data), GMA posted an average total day (6 AM to 12 MN) audience share of 34.1 percent in National Urban Philippines (NUTAM), leading ABS-CBN’s 32.9 percent by 1.2 points, and TV5’s 15.7 percent by 18.4 points. More television viewers also tuned in to GMA across all dayparts (morning, afternoon and evening inclusive of primetime) in the important areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, where the bulk of urban television households are found.

Among the top-rating GMA programs in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila are GMA’s banner newscast 24 Oras, the recently concluded GMA drama Makapiling Kang Muli, GMA Telebabad’s One True Love and Luna Blanca, the country’s longest running noontime show Eat Bulaga and consistent weekend top-rater Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS). KMJS was also the number one program in Mega Manila. Newly-launched GMA shows Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento, the sequel to the top-rating reality sitcom starring Michael V. of the same title, and Aso ni San Roque, the latest addition to the Network’s primetime block headlined by Kapuso child star Mona Louise Rey, also made it to the top 30 highest rating programs lists in NUTAM, Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.

In Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV households nationwide, GMA reigned supreme with a 38.2 percent total day audience share, 9.7 points higher than ABS-CBN’s 28.5 percent, and 23.2 points higher than TV5’s 15 percent. GMA likewise ruled in Mega Manila, which represents 59.5 percent of urban TV households in the country, generating a 39.2 percent total day audience share versus ABS-CBN’s 26.6 percent. TV5 had only 15.8 percent. Leading across all areas, GMA continues to reinforce its strong showing in the afternoon block (12NN to 6PM), scoring double-digit margins over other networks. GMA registered an afternoon audience share of 38.7 percent in NUTAM, considerably ahead of ABS-CBN’s 25.1 percent and TV5’s 16.3 percent. In Urban Luzon, GMA’s afternoon block scored an average of 43.3 percent, zooming ahead of ABS-CBN’s 20.6 percent and TV5’s 15.2 percent. Likewise, in Mega Manila, GMA registered a commanding 44.1 percent afternoon audience share, leaving ABS-CBN behind with only 19.0 percent, and TV5 which managed only 16.0 percent. Viewers are set to be blown away with the exciting premiere of Extra Challenge on October 27. Every weekend, EXTRA CHALLENGE promises a pulseracing, heart-stopping and adrenaline-pumping series as challengers are confronted with three tasks. In each task, they must place a wager from the initial capital of P100,000 given them. The challenger who completes the task fast enough earns EXTRA money. Those who fail to complete the challenge lose their wager. The game gets even better with the third and last challenge. All challengers, regardless of their performance in the first two tasks, still have the chance to take home the pot money if they succeed in conquering the third task. Creepy crawlies, slimy creatures, towering heights, haunting expeditions and extreme physical activities make up the challenges. Every round will test the contestants’ limits. To give EXTRA CHALLENGE an extra edge, Richard Gutierrez, the face of reality and adventure shows, and primetime queen Marian Rivera reunite after the success of their team up in GMA Films’ My Best Friend’s Girlfriend. Viewers have witnessed their on-screen chemistry, the same appeal displayed in their recent project together, Pinoy Adventures, which was also hosted by Richard.

Richard Gutierrez and Marian Rivera

“First hosting project ko ang EXTRA CHALLENGE at talaga namang excited ako. Kinakabahan ako siyempre ngayon ko lang ‘to gagawin pero game ako sa kahit anong challenge. Magiging extra masaya ito, promise,” shares Marian. Richard has loosened up a bit compared to his other hosting gigs. “Coming from Survivor where I was a very strict host, this time the viewers will see me get more relaxed especially with the challengers. But it doesn’t mean the challenges will be less intense. In fact, this time, they’re bigger and definitely better,” Richard says. Richard and Marian will be joined by public affairs TV personality and stand up comedian Boobay. With Boobay’s natural comic self, each episode promises to be more fun and outrageous. EXTRA CHALLENGE will dare viewers, scare them, make them cry and make them laugh. A roller coaster of emotions with grander sets, level-up adventures, shocking twists, intensified intrigues and dramas is set to unfold.
