THE STORY OF ANTHONY At a very tender age, Anthony has already mastered hard work, laboring all week without rest. He sets out in the wee hours of the morning to catch fish and collect sea shells, washes cars, in a nearby town in the afternoon and dives and scours the seabed for sea cucumbers at night. Sea cucumbers are used in many Chinese recipes and traditional medicine. Anthony’s hard work is rewarded with a measly income – a few coins that he saves in his alkansya or piggy bank. Nonetheless, the boy works tirelessly to fill his piggy bank in the hope of someday fulfilling his dream of finishing his studies.

Pepito Manaloto and his family’s rags to riches experience earned them a TV show, but because they thought it didn’t reveal their true story, they had the TV network producing their show scrap it. Instead, they came up with the idea to show exactly what goes on in the Manaloto household by having a camera crew film their lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. GMA Network bags six trophies at NAMIC Excellence in Multicultural Marketing Awards
GMA Network’s international business department was once again recognized by the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), winning six EMMAs (Excellence in Multi-Cultural Marketing Awards) for its highly innovative international marketing tactics. The “Support Manny Pacquiao” online campaign for the boxing hero’s most recent fight against Juan Manuel Marquez was awarded first place in the Digital Category. The campaign was recognized for effectively engaging Filipinos living in the US, Asia-Pacific and Middle East to send messages for Pacquiao via GMA’s citizen journalism tool, YouScoop. Highlighting Pinoy pride, these messages were later aired over GMA’s international channels. GMA International’s magazine, “Kapuso Abroad” (KA), won first place in the Grassroots Category. KA is dedicated to making Filipinos living abroad feel closer to home by providing them with relevant and entertaining information about their favorite Kapuso programs and personalities. The magazine is circulated worldwide and the increasing demand for KA prompted GMA to create a digital version of the magazine in order to reach more Filipinos globally. Winning second place in the Experiential Marketing Category is the Eat Bulaga Live in San Francisco show held on March 30. Bringing the country’s longest running, most awarded and most influential noontime show to the US allowed Filipino-Americans to experience the classic brand of Pinoy entertainment that only a show like EB can offer. The EB event gathered over 6,000 attendees from FilipinoAmerican communities in San Francisco and Northern California and helped significantly increase the subscription base of GMA Pinoy TV. GMA Kapuso Foundation launches Davao Chapter GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc. (GMAKF) strengthened its regional public service efforts with the establishment of its Davao Chapter, complementing the GMA Davao TV Station and bringing the mantra of Serbisyong Totoo on-ground faster. Themed “Serbisyong Tinud-Anay Para Sa Tanay (Serbisyong Totoo Para Sa Lahat),” the launch of the Foundation’s newest chapter was held at the Rancho Palos Verdes Sports and Country Club in Davao City on Aug. 17. Davao is a strategic location to house GMAKF’s operations in the Southern part of the country as it is highly urbanized and is geographically accessible to the outskirts of Mindanao where poverty levels are high.
Tiangco added that they would eventually want to see the Davao Chapter operate independently and generate support on its own. “Our end-goal is to make the Davao Chapter self-supporting in that it should be able to mount its own medical missions, relief operations, etc., thru local support. But this does not necessarily mean that we are excluding ourselves from extending help. Our Manila operations will be working hand in hand with our office here as we strive to better serve the residents of Davao,” Tiangco said. Tiangco led the ceremonial toast together with Jeffery Balde (Executive Director of GMAKF), Mariles Puentevella (Station Manager of GMA TV 5 Davao), Oliver Amoroso (AVP for GMA Regional TV), Cel Amores (AVP for Regional News and Public Affairs) and Gigi Lolarga (Operations Manager for GMA Regional TV). Since 2008, the Foundation has been mounting humanitarian activities for Davao’s underprivileged communities. These projects fall under GMAKF’s four areas of social concern - health, education, disaster relief and values formation. On August 18, the Foundation mounted the Kapuso Barangayan, a medical mission sponsored by Pharex Health Corp. as a birthday present for Tiangco. “It has been a yearly tradition for them to sponsor a medical mission worth at least half a million for my birthday, and I am very grateful for that,” she shared. Following the Cebu, Iloilo and Davao Chapter launches, the Foundation is now set to inaugurate its Dagupan Chapter where GMAKF operations began early this year. GMAKF also plans to establish chapters in Bicol and Ilocos where new GMA originating stations are located.

According to GMAKF EVP and COO Mel Tiangco, the Foundation’s Davao Chapter will facilitate and hasten the delivery of the foundation’s wide array of services to the Davaoeños. “We want to go to the grassroots as we mount and deliver our public service efforts. We also want to involve more people in the cause of alleviating poverty levels and extending assistance in several areas across the country,” Tiangco said.
