Mission Statement of Archbishop Curley High School Archbishop Curley High School, a Roman Catholic college preparatory school rooted in the Franciscan tradition, develops great men. With the support of the entire Archbishop Curley Family, each Curley Man is challenged to reach his maximum academic and personal potential in a safe and nurturing environment leading him to be a man of faith, character, discipline and service to others.

Dear Friends of Curley: In this Annual Report I am pleased to share that, with your help, Archbishop Curley High School remains a vital and viable institution, faithful to its mission, adapting to present realities, and preparing for the future. There are many challenges that Catholic high schools must face, and they would seem daunting if there were no support from constituencies, but fortunately that is not the case for Curley. As a school of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Curley is accredited through AdvancedED, a national certifying body. By preparing for the re-accreditation visit that takes place this November, there were opportunities to review the status of the school and how we compare with national benchmarks. I am pleased to share that we compare well, strong in many areas, and more conscious of areas where we can improve. The Archdiocese has also been conducting a study of its City and East-side schools as part of its planning, and again Curley has done well. We are grateful for the study, which included an extensive look at the physical plant, for it also helps Curley’s own facility planning. This report shows the tremendous philanthropy of alumni, parents and friends who support the Curley mission, particularly through the Annual Fund, the response to the Mustard Seed match program for endowed scholarships, the Curley Gala, and gifts to the St. Joseph Fund. Thank you to all who gave so generously, and may God bless all those who share their gifts with this school. I can also attest that the school community strives to be good stewards of your gifts, stretching those dollars as best we can for maximum impact. Growing the Annual Fund, while maintaining momentum with the other areas of advancement, remains an important goal. Last year I asked you to “be Francis” in caring for the young men of Curley, as St. Francis tried to respond to each person he met in life. Each person named in this report has done that, impacting the Curley men through their support. This year, with the goal of “Make Every Moment Count,” I again ask support for another year of growth and another year of faithfulness to the mission of a Catholic Franciscan school. Gratefully,

Fr. Donald Grzymski, OFM Conv. ’70 President

FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR

2015-2016 School Board

Dear Friends: First and foremost, my sincere thanks for your generous support during this past year. Along with the other members of the School Board, I am gratified by the generosity of so many, a level of support that allows the Board and school administration to plan for the future with confidence. A particular effort of the Board this year was to review the progress of the Strategic Plan. The current Strategic Plan was put together in 2012 after much consultation, study and soul-searching. For the past four years it has been a guiding document, and there is evidence to show significant progress in the various parts of the plan, namely: Academics, Advancement, Catholic/Franciscan Identity, Enrollment Management, Finance/Facilities, Marketing and Student Life. Each of these areas has its own objectives, and each objective has an action plan. An example is the introduction of the iPad program, where Curley was the first male Catholic school in the area to introduce a program like this. In 2015-16, for the first time, all four classes were using the iPad as part of their academic program. This year’s Annual Report shares some of those areas of progress, and documents how the school uses the Strategic Plan in an effective way. We take seriously this responsibility to share the year’s results with you, and to act responsibly with the tuition dollars as well as the gift dollars entrusted to the school. But we also trust you see beyond the names, and the categories, and the totals, to see the united effort that continues to make Curley a special place, a place where young men grow, a place where brotherhood begins, a place that is home for the Curley Family. Thank you once again for your support of the Curley mission and vision. I hope you will continue to join me, the Board, and all those whose gifts will help not only this school year, but for the future vitality of Curley. I also urge you to stop by this fall and catch a soccer or football game on our new turf field! Sincerely,

Frank Savarese ’75 School Board Chair

ENROLLMENT Enrollment is the life-blood of any school and is considered the key benchmark for a school’s vitality. Spread the word – Archbishop Curley’s enrollment of 564 young men is strong and increased by 5% over last year! Curley continues to cast a wider geographical net expanding beyond East Baltimore and Eastern Baltimore County. Today 26% of the student body resides in Anne Arundel, Carroll, and Harford Counties. Although built as a community school, Curley now educates students from the entire Baltimore Metropolitan Area. The Admissions Staff – Nick Brownlee ’96, Caroline Kogler, and Tim Skarda ’08 – guide the school’s work of recruiting and admitting students. They have taken Curley’s well-established tradition of caring for the individual and applied it directly to the admissions process. “We know Curley to be a family,” Brownlee states. “That is true for our students, alumni, and faculty. I want our incoming and prospective families to feel that too.” Brownlee, entering his fourth year as Admissions Director, adds, “We continue to become more sophisticated in our approach through statistical and demographic analysis and in our use of new communication tools. But it will always be important for us to remain intensely focused on the individual. Each young man brings unique talents to us. I want them to see how those talents will flourish here.” By embodying Curley’s spirit, the admissions team eclipsed the original goal for the Class of 2020 by 12%! The school also monitors student retention and proactively addresses the needs of students. In particular, assisting families with financial hardship is a paramount concern. Affordability is the greatest threat to the viability of any Catholic school. Curley – through the work of Retention Committee members – strives to aid families at risk for leaving the school. 5

FACILITIES The most visible and talked-about improvement to Curley’s campus is the new synthetic turf field in the Curley Bowl. The last project of the recent capital campaign, the field is ready for football in 2016. It is lined so that soccer and lacrosse can also play on the field. To accommodate soccer games, the track must be upgraded, which makes the Track Project the current priority. Other improvements to the campus have recently been realized. A partnership with the Baltimore Tree Trust, through the Archdiocese of Baltimore, resulted in one hundred new trees being planted around campus in November 2015. Students and faculty participated in this endeavor. At the same time, the boiler room was cleaned, an old boiler removed and a new boiler was installed to provide efficient heat in the winter months. Curley is also part of an archdiocesan solar energy program in an effort to reduce costs for electricity. Under the direction of Mr. John Kogler, VP for Finance and Operations, many changes, large and small, have enhanced the facilities at Curley. Discussions are underway focusing on the renovation of the classrooms in the main academic building which will include the installation of air conditioning. “Over the last twelve years, through the generosity and kindness of the entire Curley Community, we have been able to make substantial improvements to the campus,” says Mr. Kogler. “The next phase of renovations will create a 21st century academic building and considerably enhance the school’s current 1:1 iPad program and the environment in which the students learn.”

ENDOWMENT When asked why he continues to support the endowed scholarship that he and his wife, Arleen, established in 2007, Joe Citro simply references a conversation he had years ago with past Curley President, Fr. Michael Martin. He recalls the former head of school sharing with him the well-known verse from the Prayer of St. Francis, “For it is in giving that we receive.” Citro maintains that following this piece of wisdom from Curley’s patron saint has served him well. “It always seems to hold true for me,” he says with a chuckle. The Joseph R. Citro, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of the 1969 graduate’s father, is one of fortyfive endowed scholarships that provide assistance to students with financial need. Scholarships from these funds will be awarded in perpetuity based on the earnings from the principal. “Tuition is so expensive these days,” says Citro. Adding, “I can’t imagine how families are able to do it.” The couple created the scholarship with an initial gift of $25,000 and vowed to continue to invest in it each year. “My parents had nothing but found a way to send me to Curley. The school gave me the foundation to be successful in my career and in life which in turn allowed our children many opportunities,” he states. “We want to give other young men this same chance.” The fund has grown in excess of $150,000 through Citro family contributions and matching gifts that includes the recent Mustard Seed Match offered by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. “For us, having our gifts matched was a big incentive and made us realize that now was the time to really step up.” The recent retiree and his wife have some advice for others who have considered establishing a scholarship. “If you just get it started, opportunities will come along and help the scholarship to grow.” 9

PLANNED GIVING “A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit” (D. Elton Trueblood) Members of the Michael J. Curley Legacy Trust have expressed their commitment to Archbishop Curley High School through a very special and important form of financial support. These donors have named the school the ultimate beneficiary of a planned gift. Terry Lijewski and his wife, Pat, are two of the newest members of Curley’s planned giving society. Terry credits his alma mater with providing the foundation that allowed him to be successful in college. He also believes the school was a catalyst for his spiritual life. “Curley helped to strengthen my faith, and I just stayed with it,” says the St. Margaret’s parishioner. Terry, a former Alumni Association president, and Pat, a former School Board member, said the decision they made to remember Curley in their will wasn’t difficult. “We’ve remained involved with the school and continue to support it any way we can,” Terry shares. Pat adds that Curley really has felt like family to both of them over the years and exclaims, “That’s why we did it!” Their gift will ultimately establish a scholarship that is awarded based on strong academics. While Terry and Pat are regular visitors to the school for events such as Homecoming, the Gala, and various concerts, this past spring Terry was back for something special. “Our 50-year reunion weekend was a really enjoyable experience. It was wonderful to see the guys again, and I was really surprised by how far some of my classmates traveled to attend.”

ACADEMICS Where do you want to go to college? This question is addressed with a sense of urgency to seniors; it is also posed to freshmen who begin their first year at Curley. The college question, along with the evaluation of abilities, drives the Curley student’s academic journey. Franciscan Program or Cupertino Program or Anthony Program is generally the first decision to be made, depending on a student’s academic strength. Business Program or STEM gives the student an opportunity to select courses based on his area of interest. AP Courses can earn the student college credits while still in high school. The academics at Curley enables the student to make conscious choices to answer the college question. Along the way, the student is guided by his teachers, his faculty advisor, his guidance counselor and Curley’s College Counselor, Mr. Jamey Becker ’97. “College Counseling at Curley could not be stronger. Each year we continue to have more and more success with acceptances and scholarships offered to our young men. Much of our success in college counseling is due to the personal approach we take with each family over the four years they are at Curley. In getting to know each student, I can offer a personalized approach which allows each of our young men to pursue his interests, dreams, and goals.” Most recently, members of the Class of 2016 earned over $10 Million in scholarships, and garnered 248 acceptances to 107 different four-year colleges and universities. These new Curley alumni will be attending the likes of Georgetown, The Catholic University of America, Florida Institute of Technology, Loyola University of Maryland, Marquette, Mt. St. Mary’s, Providence College and James Madison. Will they be prepared to take on the challenge? Tim Pillsbury ’10 graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in physics and mathematics and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in physics at Penn State. In response to a survey of young alumni, Tim indicated that Curley prepared him well in the areas of mathematics, science, critical thinking, English and writing.

In memory of Matthew Garrison Mr. & Mrs. David Kurtz

Curley students participate in what is known as the “Mission 4 Service” program through which, in each year at Curley and with an increasing number of service hours, students offer their time and talents to others. As in most Catholic schools, such service is a natural sharing of what we have received through God’s blessings. A reflection part of the program helps students to process what they experience, and to help them see how their service may have changed them. Sometimes the students sees this as a just another requirement, but often the experience changes that perception, leading to additional hours of service. It has been a natural outgrowth of this student service component that finds alumni involved in service. Sometimes in their parish or workplace, or through organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, graduates contribute time, talent and treasure to their favorite causes. In the past two years the Alumni Association has begun to offer service opportunities, meeting specific needs while giving graduates a chance to serve with their alumni brothers. Steve Maex ’06 has been instrumental in encouraging this outreach, observing, “As alumni, we often look to stay connected to Curley through events such as Homecoming and shrimp feasts that serve the role of reuniting a brotherhood of Curley men. However, maintaining this connection can occur daily through actions that perpetuate the values of St. Francis in our communities. Community outreach events are tangible examples of alumni continuing to serve the role of a Curley Man in society after graduation and living out the Franciscan value of service.” This summer the Alumni sponsored two service days, the first with a painting project at Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School in Dundalk, and the second to assist with the construction of Angel Park in Perry Hall.

FAITH Faith in Jesus Christ is central to Archbishop Curley High School’s mission. Here prayer and worship are cornerstones of our communal interaction. Tradition holds that every class period begins with prayer. Throughout the year, regular opportunities are presented for school-wide worship. Monthly Masses occur in the auditorium to celebrate holy days, the feast of St. Francis, and other important commemorations. This year, we instituted regularly occurring community prayer services during which all students gathered together. These blend two of Curley’s stated Franciscan Ideals: Dedication to Christ in the Church and Strong Community Relations. As a school community, we are called to reflect Christ’s love and to bear witness to his Gospel message. This requires us to reach outside our own walls to serve the broader community. Curley’s Mission 4 Service Program requires students on every grade level to commit themselves to service to the marginalized and to reflect on the significance of that work. Fr. Matt Foley, Curley’s Campus Minister, when discussing the relationship of the school’s daily theology lessons and the call to serve, notes: “What we study isn’t just a head activity, but a heart and hand activity as well.” In an attempt to share Christ’s love with the rest of our Curley community, Fr. Donald, upon his return to school leadership in 2014, instituted a periodic video message built around a religious theme. Whether focused on a particular religious observance, a Franciscan topic, or a school tradition, these vignettes remind alumni and friends of the school about the centrality of our Catholic faith to the daily life of Curley. In all of these ways, Archbishop Curley celebrates our Catholic identity. It is our prayer that people know this to be a place where the Holy Spirit is at work every day. 17

MARKETING Have you seen one of Archbishop Curley’s new billboards? Or seen the ad in Baltimore Magazine? Maybe it was a digital ad on your Facebook page. All of these reflect Archbishop Curley’s marketing plan. The school’s strategic plan emphasizes effective marketing as one of the seven areas of focus. The initial phases resulted in much of the backbone of the branding campaign – a new website, increased social media presence, and a refreshed logo. External marketing focused primarily on digital tools, the success of which was easily measured. This year, Curley has contracted with BMWW, a local marketing firm, to expand our marketing footprint. “We are excited by the new partnership with BMWW,” Fr. Donald notes. “Their knowledge of the Baltimore secondary schools market and their success in branding efforts for high schools as well as universities will serve us well.” Under their direction, the school has rolled out a new campaign for the fall student recruitment season. This features billboards, kiosks, digital ads, and some print materials focused on the singular call to action: “Get to Know Curley.” While this paid advertising is important, any successful school also relies on word of mouth to engage prospective families. Please share your Curley stories with your neighbors and co-workers. Display a Curley logo sticker on your car’s rear window. Share Curley’s news stories on your Facebook page and Twitter feed. Encourage family and friends to visit our Open House on October 22-23. In all of these ways, you will be our most effective marketers. “Archbishop Curley is a special place made up of great people,” Fr. Donald states. “Help share our story. I want everyone to know our Curley Pride!”
