Commissioned for the Beethoven Festival for clarinet and cello, this piece encompasses material contrasts between dynamic and registral extremes and abrasive and soft, melancholic lines. Among Beethoven’s most seminal works, it was his Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), Piano Sonata No. 32, and the Piano Sonata No. 14 (Moonlight) that inspired me at this time. Emotionally and powerfully striking characteristics underpin this new work defining its’ shape and dynamic contours. The abrupt occurrences of rhythmically sharp and dissonant motifs shaped by widely displaced chords sound as double stops in the cello pitted against piercing high pitches from the clarinet. Fragments of these rough edged motifs are dispersed throughout the contrasting developing material, interrupting the continuity of the counteracting smooth, sombre melodic lines. The music employs the ensemble’s wide range of pitches, adjacent extremes featured as the music’s unsettling, yet defining expressive narrative devices.
